A Barbara Hepworth sculpture is identified by matching the object to reliable documentation, not by deciding that it “looks like Hepworth.” Begin with the work’s recorded title, date, medium, dimensions, catalogue number, photographs, marks and ownership history. Then compare those details with the Barbara Hepworth Estate’s sculpture index and with the artist’s own sculpture record books.

Holes, polished openings, strings, carved wood or stone, bronze, and simplified bodies or landscapes are useful clues for describing a work. They are not, individually or together, proof of authorship. The strongest conclusion is a documented match; resemblance alone remains only a visual comparison.

What identification can—and cannot—establish

  • What does the object look like? This is a visual description of its shape, surface, openings, strings, color and material.
  • Does it correspond to a documented Hepworth work? This is tested by comparing the object with records for title, date, medium, dimensions, photographs and history.
  • Is the attribution secure? That is a specialist art-historical conclusion, especially when ownership, value or legal responsibility is involved.

A rounded, pierced form may be consistent with Hepworth’s practice, but other sculptors made pierced abstractions. A bronze may be consistent with her later work, but bronze is not a signature. A label, family story or online image match can be useful evidence to investigate, yet none should be treated as conclusive by itself.

The Estate’s catalogue-raisonné page says that its sculpture catalogue raisonné is being revised under Dr Sophie Bowness. Owners can submit information, and requests for anonymity will be honored. The Estate also states that it does not issue certificates of authentication. Read the catalogue as a body of documentation about works and their histories, not as an automatic certificate service: Barbara Hepworth Estate, Catalogue Raisonné.

Record the sculpture before interpreting it

Make a complete object record while the sculpture is in front of you. Photograph every side in even light, include a scale reference, and keep separate images of any signature, inscription, foundry mark, fixing, damage or restoration. Do not clean, polish, restring or remove a base before documentation; an intervention can erase evidence.

Essential fields to capture

  • Title as recorded: copy the wording from a label, invoice, collection file or inscription, preserving punctuation and capitalization.
  • Date or date range: note whether the date is carved, written, printed on a label or supplied by an owner.
  • Medium and construction: distinguish wood species, stone or marble where known, bronze, paint, string, wire, a separate base and any later replacement parts.
  • Dimensions: measure height, width and depth in a consistent unit. Record the sculpture alone and, separately, its base or mount.
  • Marks: transcribe signatures, initials, numbers, labels, foundry stamps, collection marks and inscriptions exactly; record their location.
  • Catalogue identifier: look for a reference such as “BH 35” or “BH 81,” but do not assume a number is genuine until it agrees with an authoritative record.
  • Provenance and exhibition history: list owners, dealers, sales, exhibitions, gifts and collection accessions with dates and documents.
  • Physical condition: note cracks, joins, filled holes, replacement strings, altered color, corrosion, repairs and whether the surface appears original.

These details let you search efficiently and give a conservator or specialist enough information to distinguish a documented work from a look-alike. Measurements are particularly important: a photograph can make a small maquette appear monumental, while a different camera angle can hide an opening or a join.

Search the Hepworth Estate sculpture index

The Estate’s sculpture index can be searched and sorted by date, catalogue number, medium and title. Use it as a controlled comparison rather than browsing only for a similar silhouette.

  1. Search the most exact term first. Enter the recorded title in quotation marks where the site permits, then try a shorter distinctive phrase if no result appears.
  2. Try the catalogue number. An identifier on a label or old inventory may lead directly to an entry. For example, the index uses BH 35 for Pierced Form (1932) and BH 81 for Ball, Plane and Hole (1936).
  3. Filter by date. If the object is dated only approximately, search a range that includes the uncertainty rather than forcing a single year.
  4. Filter by medium. Compare wood, stone, marble, bronze or mixed descriptions, and check whether the entry describes color, string or a separate element.
  5. Compare the complete entry. Check title, date, medium, dimensions, catalogue number and every available photograph. A matching title alone is insufficient because titles can recur or be translated differently.
  6. Save the record with its access date. Online entries and catalogue status can change. Keep a copy of the page URL and your own photographs together with the object file.

If an entry appears close but one major field conflicts—such as a different material, scale or construction—treat that conflict as a reason to investigate, not as a minor discrepancy to explain away. It could indicate a different work, a later cast, a version, a restoration or an incorrect object label.

Use Hepworth’s sculpture record books as primary evidence

The Hepworth Wakefield describes Hepworth’s sculpture record books as 45 volumes covering 1925–1975. The artist compiled details such as medium, dimensions, sales and exhibitions, and often included a photograph. These records can connect an object to the way Hepworth herself tracked her work: The Hepworth Wakefield, Research Network Resources.

A record-book reference is most useful when several fields agree. A volume may support the existence of a work, show that it was sold or exhibited, and preserve a dimension or photograph that clarifies an ambiguous object. It does not remove the need to examine the physical sculpture. A damaged surface, recut opening, replacement string or later mount can make an original object look unlike its photograph, while a reproduction can be made to look deceptively close.

Understand Hepworth’s materials and working methods

Direct carving in wood, stone and marble

Hepworth was associated with the modernist movement in which direct carving mattered: the artist worked directly in the final wood or stone rather than first modeling a form for another craftsperson to execute. The Hepworth Wakefield quotes her explaining, “Carving to me is more interesting than modelling, because there is an unlimited variety of materials from which to draw inspiration.” Read the quotation in context on the museum’s Barbara Hepworth artist page.

Direct carving can leave evidence of the material’s resistance: tool marks, changes in grain direction, irregular transitions, and a form that seems to grow from a block rather than being assembled from modeled parts. Those observations help you describe the object, but they do not prove that Hepworth carved it. Other artists also carved directly, and later restorations can obscure or imitate tool marks.

Bronze and the later use of casting

The Rijksmuseum describes Hepworth’s early modern sculpture in wood, stone and marble and notes that she later moved to bronze to make mass-produced sculptures: Rijksmuseum, Barbara Hepworth. Consequently, bronze is compatible with her career, especially in later work, but it is not an authorship test. A bronze object should be checked for the documented title, date, dimensions, cast information, foundry or edition details where recorded, and a traceable history.

Paint and mixed materials

Color may be integral to a particular work rather than a later decoration. Record the location, opacity, edge quality and apparent age of paint, and compare it with photographs or descriptions in the relevant record. If a sculpture combines a carved body with strings, fittings or a base, document each component separately; a replaced component can alter the work’s appearance without changing the carved element.

Read holes, hollows and pierced forms as formal choices

Pierced or hollow forms recur throughout Hepworth’s practice. An opening can make the surrounding air part of the composition, set an interior against an exterior surface, or shift the viewer’s attention from mass to interval. A smooth oval, a sharp plane and a circular hole may create a relationship between containment and release.

The Rijksmuseum identifies pierced forms with holes as characteristic of Hepworth’s sculpture. “Characteristic” is a description of recurrence, not a unique fingerprint. When you inspect an opening, note its shape, edge, depth, alignment and whether it passes completely through the material. Compare those observations with photographs and dimensions rather than relying on the fact that the sculpture is pierced.

Rounded masses and the body

Hepworth’s abstractions can suggest a torso, limbs, a reclining figure or an embrace without presenting a literal anatomical likeness. Look for balance, axis, shoulder-like shoulders, a pelvic opening or a tension between two adjoining volumes, but phrase the result as a possibility: “the form may evoke” or “the arrangement can be read as.” Do not assign one fixed human meaning to every oval or void.

Landscape and the space around the work

Hepworth identified the human figure and landscape as principal inspirations. Her 1946 statement, quoted by The Hepworth Wakefield, reads: “The main sources of my inspiration are the human figure and the landscape; also the one in relation to the other.” A hollow can therefore be discussed as a view through a landscape-like mass, while a leaning plane can suggest horizon, slope or wind. These are interpretive anchors, not hidden labels supplied by the artist for every sculpture.

Understand strings and the St Ives context

Hepworth moved to St Ives in 1939, the year she began making stringed sculptures. Strings may cross an opening, divide a cavity, connect separate points or create a visual vibration against a solid surface. Their spacing, tension, color and attachment points are worth recording because they are part of the work’s structure, not merely decoration.

Hepworth described the meaning of this element in a statement quoted by The Hepworth Wakefield: “the strings were the tension I felt between myself and the sea, the wind or the hills.” The quotation supports an interpretation of physical and emotional tension, but it does not prescribe a single meaning for every stringed work. A viewer can describe how the strings make space and direction visible without claiming that a particular line represents one specific hill or wave.

Study a documented example without turning it into a checklist

Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red (1943) is described by The Hepworth Wakefield as an early example of Hepworth’s carved and stringed sculptures. Its title, date, color and combination of carving and strings make it a useful case study for observing how a solid oval, painted areas and linear elements can operate together. Consult the museum’s object page for the documented work: Sculpture with Colour (Oval Form) Pale Blue and Red.

Do not reverse the example into a rule that every painted oval with strings is by Hepworth. Instead, ask which features belong to this specific documented object and which are broader tendencies. The example demonstrates how to describe form and material; the Estate and record books establish identity.

Compare two candidate works or attributions systematically

When photographs, labels or two possible records compete, use the following axes in order. Give documentary identity more weight than stylistic resemblance.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Possible result
Documented identity Does the title and catalogue identifier correspond to an Estate or museum record? Documented match, no matching record, or unresolved
Material and dimensions Do material, measurements, construction and base agree? Consistent, partly consistent or conflicting
Visual evidence Do profiles, openings, strings, color and surface details match photographs from comparable views? Strong visual correspondence or only general resemblance
Provenance and history Can ownership, sale, exhibition or collection history be traced? Continuous, partial or unsupported history
Attribution status What conclusion is justified by all the evidence? Documented match, plausible comparison or unresolved attribution

Keep these categories separate in your notes and in any description offered to a buyer, insurer, museum or family. “Listed in a catalogue” describes documentation; “looks stylistically similar” describes appearance. Neither phrase should be silently upgraded to a definitive attribution.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use provenance as a chain, not a single story

Provenance is strongest when independent records connect the sculpture through time: an original sale, an exhibition catalogue, a dealer or gallery document, a dated photograph, a collection inventory and a later transfer. Record the names, dates and document types rather than summarizing everything as “from a private collection.” Check whether a stated exhibition title and date appear in the artist’s records or a museum catalogue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask how each document relates to the physical object. A receipt may identify a title but omit dimensions; a photograph may show dimensions but not a catalogue number; a label may have been attached to a different work. Conflicting evidence should remain visible in the file until a specialist resolves it.

Know when to seek specialist advice

Obtain qualified art-historical and conservation advice before making a consequential attribution, sale, insurance declaration, export decision or restoration. Provide the specialist with your object record, high-resolution photographs, measurements, condition notes, provenance documents and every Estate or museum record you found. Ask the specialist to state whether the result is a documented match, a plausible comparison or unresolved, and to identify which evidence supports that conclusion.

Do not let a seller’s confidence, an unsigned certificate from an unrelated party or a reverse-image search substitute for expertise. Online images can omit the back, underside, scale and condition changes that matter most. A specialist may also recommend technical examination of wood, stone, bronze, paint, fasteners or strings, but testing should answer a defined question rather than be used as a generic guarantee.

Further reference points and places to study authentic works

The Estate lists J. P. Hodin, Barbara Hepworth, with a catalogue of sculptures by Alan Bowness (1961), and Alan Bowness (ed.), The Complete Sculpture of Barbara Hepworth 1960–69 (1971). The Estate describes both books as out of print and says a revised sculpture catalogue raisonné is in preparation. Verify edition and availability before relying on a particular volume: Estate catalogue-raisonné information.

Museum collections provide a valuable way to compare scale, surface and spatial effects with authentic works in person. The Hepworth Wakefield’s artist resources and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in St Ives are relevant destinations to investigate, but displays and access arrangements can change. Use current institutional information before planning a visit.

A practical identification workflow

  1. Stabilize the evidence. Photograph the sculpture as found, record condition and avoid alterations.
  2. Describe before interpreting. Write down material, dimensions, openings, strings, color, marks and construction without naming an artist.
  3. Search the Estate index. Use title, catalogue number, date, medium and dimensions in that order of specificity.
  4. Compare photographs and records. Check multiple views, scale, base, surface and any documented variations.
  5. Consult record-book and museum information. Look for agreement in medium, dimensions, sales, exhibitions and photographs.
  6. Assemble provenance. Link each ownership or exhibition claim to a dated document where possible.
  7. Classify the result honestly. Label it a documented match, plausible comparison or unresolved attribution.
  8. Escalate when the stakes are high. Give a qualified specialist the complete file before making a financial, legal or conservation decision.

This workflow lets you appreciate Hepworth’s formal language—carved mass, pierced space, strings, body and landscape—while keeping interpretation distinct from proof of authorship.
