A B-29 Superfortress is easiest to recognize by a combination of traits: a very large four-engine propeller-bomber layout, a long narrow wing, a long fuselage, and prominent defensive gun positions. The National Museum of the United States Air Force lists a 141 ft 3 in wingspan, a 99 ft fuselage length, and four Wright R-3350 engines. Those measurements and the engine count are useful checks, but no single feature proves an identification; configurations and markings changed between aircraft and missions.
For a reliable call, work from the overall silhouette to the engines, wing, turret arrangement, and finally the markings. If a photograph hides the tail, underside, or nacelles, report a qualified identification rather than treating an incomplete view as conclusive.
What makes the B-29 recognizable
The B-29 is a large, four-engine, propeller-driven bomber. In a clear side or three-quarter photograph, its overall impression is of a long fuselage carried beneath a broad span, with two engines on each wing. The aircraft’s proportions matter more than any one nose detail: a suspected B-29 should look large, long, and wing-dominant rather than compact or short-winged.

Defensive installations provide a second major clue. Most B-29s used remote-controlled gun turrets plus a manned tail turret. The arrangement is distinctive when several turret blisters and the tail position are visible, but it is not universal: modified aircraft could have fewer positions or different equipment.
Start with silhouette and scale
Read the whole aircraft before zooming in
Begin by tracing the outline from nose to tail. Look for a long fuselage, a large span, four propeller nacelles, and a bomber-like stance rather than trying to identify a name or nose-art design immediately. A silhouette viewed from above or from an oblique angle can reveal the wing-to-fuselage relationship even when windows and turrets are too small to resolve.
The B-29’s listed 141 ft 3 in span is longer than its 99 ft length. In a photograph with reliable scale, the wings should therefore dominate the aircraft’s width while the fuselage remains visibly substantial. Do not measure pixels and treat the result as exact: lens perspective, cropping, and a wing viewed at an angle can all distort apparent dimensions.
Use context as a scale check, not as proof
Place a visible reference beside the aircraft only after establishing the basic shape. A runway width, hangar opening, maintenance vehicle, or person can indicate whether the subject is genuinely a very large bomber. If the reference is at a different distance from the camera, the comparison is unreliable. Record the result as “consistent with B-29 scale,” not “identified by scale.”
Count the engines and propellers
Four engines are a primary discriminator
The Air Force museum identifies four Wright R-3350 engines for the B-29. In a front, rear, or broad three-quarter view, count the nacelles and propeller discs: two engines should sit on each wing. This is more useful than trying to recognize an engine model from a small image, because the nacelles and propellers are usually easier to see than manufacturer details.

Count only what the image actually shows. A cropped wing, a cloud, smoke, or a propeller aligned edge-on can hide an engine. If you can see one wing clearly and only part of the other, write down the visible count and mark the total as unconfirmed. Never infer four engines from the aircraft’s size alone.
Check placement, not just the number
Four engines should be distributed symmetrically across the wings, with inner and outer positions on each side. Look for matching nacelle locations and propeller hubs rather than counting bright spots that might be reflections. The engine layout should agree with the wing’s long, narrow appearance; an engine count that conflicts with the planform is a reason to pause and seek a better view.

Study the long, narrow wing
High aspect ratio is a useful shape cue
The Smithsonian’s description of the preserved B-29 Enola Gay characterizes the wing as long, narrow, and high aspect ratio. In practical terms, the span appears large relative to the wing’s chord, especially when viewed from above or from a shallow front angle. This proportion helps separate the B-29’s visual character from aircraft with shorter, deeper wings.
Inspect the wing in an image that shows both leading and trailing edges. A steeply foreshortened view can make a long wing look short, while a side view may hide its planform almost completely. Use the wing cue together with the four-engine layout and fuselage length; none of these observations is sufficient in isolation.
Look for the large Fowler flaps when visible
The Smithsonian also documents large Fowler-type flaps. They may be retracted and hidden in a flight photograph, so their absence is not evidence against a B-29. When extended on approach, during maintenance, or in a museum display, the flaps can make the trailing-edge area look especially deep and complex. Treat them as a confirming detail, not a required one.

Examine turret positions and glazing
Understand the usual defensive arrangement
Most B-29s carried remote-controlled defensive turrets and a manned tail turret. The Air Force museum’s walk-through fuselage exhibit describes four remote turret positions plus a tail turret as part of the system. From outside, these positions may appear as rounded blisters, transparent domes, or glazed stations on the upper fuselage, lower fuselage, or tail.

In a photograph, first mark every visible turret or blister on a simple sketch of the aircraft. Then determine whether the feature is a turret, a window, a maintenance opening, or a reflection. Bright glazing can merge with sky; shadows can make a turret disappear. A clear tail view is especially valuable because the manned tail installation is a separate position from the remote stations.
Why turret count cannot stand alone
Turret count varies with aircraft configuration. The Air Force museum states that Silverplate aircraft retained only the tail turret and had armor removed to reduce weight. The Smithsonian’s Enola Gay record describes five turret positions for that particular preserved aircraft. These descriptions refer to a standard system, a modified mission aircraft, and an individual surviving example; they do not establish one unchanging appearance for every B-29.
Consequently, “no visible upper turret” is not enough to reject the type, especially in a side view or in a modified aircraft. Conversely, a rounded blister does not prove B-29 identity unless the engines, wing, and fuselage proportions agree.
Use markings only after the airframe clues
Nose art and names identify an individual aircraft
Paint, nose art, and aircraft names can identify a particular B-29, but they are not type-wide features. The Smithsonian’s Enola Gay collection record notes the aircraft’s name on the lower left nose and its serial on the vertical fin. Those markings are useful when legible because they connect a photograph to one known airframe.

Do not generalize from Enola Gay’s appearance to all B-29s. Other aircraft had different names, artwork, camouflage, natural-metal finishes, mission markings, or restoration paint. A restored museum aircraft may also display markings that differ from its operational appearance.
Read serials and lettering cautiously
Zoom in on the vertical fin, nose, and fuselage sides only after recording the structural cues. Check whether a character is actually painted lettering or a seam, reflection, or shadow. If a serial is partly hidden, transcribe only the visible characters and label the reading uncertain. A plausible name without a matching B-29 silhouette is not a secure identification.
A repeatable identification procedure
- Establish the view. Note whether the image is side, front, rear, overhead, or three-quarter. List which areas are hidden by cropping, haze, buildings, or other aircraft.
- Trace the silhouette. Look for a long fuselage and a long-span wing. Decide whether the aircraft has the scale and proportions expected of a very large bomber.
- Count visible engines. Record each nacelle and propeller that can actually be seen. Four engines, arranged two per wing, should be your working expectation, not an assumption.
- Inspect the wing planform. In a view that exposes the wing, check for the long, narrow, high-aspect-ratio shape described by the Smithsonian. Note large Fowler flaps if they are extended or otherwise visible.
- Map defensive positions. Look for remote turret blisters and the tail turret. Record which positions are visible and which are hidden; do not reject a candidate solely because a turret is absent in an obstructed view.
- Check the tail and landing-gear area. Use the tail installation, fin, and any visible gear arrangement as consistency checks. Do not assign a type from one small tail detail.
- Read markings last. Use names, nose art, and serials to identify an individual aircraft after the structural assessment. Compare the lettering with a reliable collection record when one is available.
- State confidence explicitly. If the image shows the four-engine layout, wing proportions, fuselage scale, and compatible defensive positions, call it a strong identification. If one or more major areas are hidden, use wording such as “consistent with a B-29” and request a clearer image.
How to handle incomplete or difficult photographs
Side views
A side view is good for judging fuselage length, nose shape, tail position, and visible turret glazing, but it can hide the wing’s true span and the far-side engines. Count only the near-side engines unless the opposite nacelles are clearly visible. Ask for a front three-quarter or overhead view to confirm the total.
Front and rear views
Front views make the four-engine arrangement and wing span easier to assess, while rear views can reveal the tail turret and the spacing of the nacelles. Foreshortening makes the fuselage look shorter, so do not compare its apparent length directly with the 99 ft specification in such a view.

Overhead images are useful for the long, narrow wing and engine placement. Oblique views can show several turret positions at once, but reflections and perspective may turn windows into apparent blisters. Use multiple independent cues before reaching a conclusion.

Restored, damaged, or partially hidden aircraft
A museum restoration may have altered paint, replaced glazing, or omitted internal equipment that is not visible externally. Damage, missing panels, smoke, and shadows can obscure the same features. Separate “not visible” from “not present” in your notes, and avoid treating a missing visual cue as a confirmed modification.

When another large bomber is in the same frame, compare both aircraft on the same five axes rather than relying on an overall impression:

The available museum descriptions establish these B-29 cues, not a universal field guide to every other bomber. If an alternative aircraft is under consideration, describe the observed differences and seek a source specific to that alternative rather than assigning it a name from memory.

Common identification errors
- Calling any four-engine propeller aircraft a B-29. Four engines are necessary for the expected configuration, but the wing proportions, scale, and defensive layout must also agree.
- Rejecting a B-29 because a turret is missing. The view may hide the position, or the aircraft may be a modified example such as a Silverplate aircraft.
- Using nose art as the primary clue. Artwork and names identify individual aircraft, not the entire type.
- Measuring an image without accounting for perspective. Apparent pixel dimensions are not the museum’s physical dimensions unless camera geometry and scale are known.
- Counting reflections as turrets or engines. Check for repeated alignment, nacelle shape, propeller hubs, and consistent shadows.
- Assuming a preserved aircraft represents every B-29. The Enola Gay is a specific aircraft with its own markings and documented configuration.
- Giving an unqualified answer from a cropped image. State what is visible, what is hidden, and which additional view would resolve the uncertainty.
What to request when the evidence is insufficient
If the first photograph does not support a firm call, request a full side or three-quarter view, a front view showing both wings, and a rear or tail view. Ask for the original-resolution file rather than a screenshot, because small turret domes and serial characters disappear during compression. Also ask when and where the photograph was taken if a preserved aircraft or restoration is possible; context can explain unusual paint or equipment without turning it into a type-level feature.
A useful identification note separates observation from interpretation: “Two engines visible on the near wing; far wing cropped; long narrow wing; one upper blister; tail not visible.” That format makes the confidence level auditable and prevents an attractive marking from outweighing missing structural evidence.
