Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To host The Pioneers, use the modpack’s matching server pack—not the ordinary client download—on Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge version named in that server-pack release. The latest listed release is The Pioneers 8.2, released April 8, 2026. Extract the server pack into a clean folder, run its supplied start script, accept the Minecraft EULA, allocate at least 8 GB of RAM, and make the server reachable through your home network or a managed host. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge loader and modpack release.
What you need before installing
The Pioneers is an extra-large adventure and exploration modpack with magic and technology systems. Its author, BBoldt, recommends dedicating 8 GB or more of RAM: “I recommend dedicating 8GB or more of RAM, there are a lot of mods.” That is a starting recommendation, not a guaranteed player-capacity figure. No complete authoritative matrix for CPU model, storage speed, Java version or maximum players is published with the pack, so performance must be checked on the machine and world you actually use.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
You can run the server on a computer at home or rent a managed Minecraft server. Neither option is universally better; the right choice depends on how much administration you want to do and whether your home connection can accept incoming players.

| Decision factor | Self-hosted on your PC | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You download the server pack, install the matching Forge loader, run the script, configure the operating-system firewall and usually configure the router. | The provider provisions the server after you choose a supported pack, plan and region. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting bill, but your computer must remain powered on and you carry the electricity and maintenance costs. | A recurring hosting charge applies; current price, plan limits and release support must be checked with the provider. |
| File and backup control | Full access to world, configuration, logs and backups. | Access depends on the provider’s panel and backup tools. |
| Home-network exposure | Requires firewall and router work unless everyone uses a private network solution. | The provider supplies the public endpoint, so your home network does not need to accept connections. |
| Geographic latency | Players connect to your home connection; distance and upload quality matter. | You can generally select a region closer to most players, subject to the provider’s availability. |
| Technical support | You troubleshoot the operating system, Java/Forge launch and networking yourself. | The host handles infrastructure; CurseForge’s documented hosted workflow identifies Shockbyte for provisioning and support. |
| Sharing the exact pack | You tell players which release and loader to install. | CurseForge’s hosted workflow can provide a share link or import code containing the modpack and connection information. |
The project description names Bisect Hosting as a setup option, and BoxToPlay advertises one-click installation for The Pioneers. Verify the provider’s current supported release, memory allocation, price, region and backup policy before paying; those commercial details change independently of the modpack.
How to self-host The Pioneers step by step
1. Select one exact release
- Open The Pioneers’ Files page on CurseForge.
- Select the release you intend to run. The latest listed entry is 8.2 for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, dated April 8, 2026.
- Record the release number, Minecraft version and Forge version shown for that entry. Use those three values when configuring both the server and every client.
Do not assume that the newest file in one section belongs to the newest file in another. Treat the release entry as a matched set.
2. Download its server pack
- Open the selected release’s Additional Files section.
- Download the server-pack archive belonging to that release.
- Keep the archive until the server has started successfully; it is useful for rebuilding a clean installation if files are accidentally changed.
CurseForge’s Java multiplayer guidance recommends the author’s server pack when a modpack provides one. The Pioneers’ author explicitly warns that the normal client files will not load correctly as a server. A client profile is not a substitute for the server pack.
3. Create a clean server directory
- Create a new folder used only for this server. A descriptive name such as
ThePioneers-8.2-servermakes later updates less error-prone. - Extract the server-pack archive directly into that folder.
- Check that the extracted structure includes the supplied
MODS,CONFIGandKUBEJSfolders. Do not nest the real files inside an extra archive-name folder if the start script expects them at the server root. - Do not copy a separate client installation over the extracted files. If you need to start over, make a fresh directory and extract the server archive again.
4. Install or use the Forge version named by the pack
The server pack’s release notes or files identify the Forge version to use. Install or launch that exact version for Minecraft 1.20.1. Forge and Minecraft versions are compatibility requirements, not optional labels: the wrong loader can prevent the server from loading mods even when the folder appears complete.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Do not replace the listed Forge version with a newer one simply because it is available. Change versions only when a later The Pioneers release specifically identifies the new loader.
5. Run the supplied start script
- From the server folder, run the start file included in the server pack. Use the file supplied for your operating system rather than inventing a new launch command.
- Allow the first launch to create the server’s initial files. A first run may stop or pause while the server displays the EULA requirement.
- Open the generated EULA file, read the terms and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to them.
- Run the supplied start script again. Keep the terminal or console visible while the world and mods load.
- Wait for the console to report that the server is ready before attempting to connect.
If the script closes immediately, launch it from a terminal or command window so the error remains visible. The first things to check are the server-pack extraction, Minecraft version and Forge version; do not begin by deleting random files from a modded installation.
6. Allocate memory and observe performance
Begin with at least 8 GB dedicated to the server, matching the author’s recommendation. “8 GB or more” describes the memory assigned to the server process, not necessarily the total physical RAM in the computer. The operating system and any client running on the same machine also need memory, so leave enough headroom for them.
- If the server repeatedly reports memory exhaustion, reduce other applications first and confirm that the configured allocation is actually being used.
- Watch the console and in-game behavior while several players explore, generate terrain and use machine-heavy areas. A quiet spawn area is not a meaningful stress test for an extra-large pack.
- Increase allocation only when the computer has spare physical memory. Giving Java more memory than the machine can provide can make the entire computer unresponsive.
- There is no published independent player-capacity benchmark for The Pioneers. Treat any player count as an observation from your hardware and world, not as an official limit.
The available pack documentation does not establish a complete CPU, storage or Java requirement table. Choose hardware with adequate free memory and monitor it rather than presenting an unverified specification as mandatory.

7. Make the server reachable
A server that works locally still needs a network path for friends outside your home. The exact configuration depends on your operating system, router and internet provider.
- Firewall: create an inbound rule for the server process or the port configured in the server’s properties. Apply the narrowest rule that allows the intended players.
- Router: if players connect from outside your home, forward the configured Minecraft port to the computer running the server and give that computer a stable local address. The pack documentation does not specify a universal port or router design, so use the value shown in your own server configuration.
- Address sharing: give friends the public address and configured port only after testing from a different network. A local address that works on your Wi-Fi will not necessarily work over the internet.
- Private-network alternative: you can use a private network or VPN solution when every player supports the same service. In that arrangement, players connect through the private address and you may not need public router forwarding.
- Security: keep the server, operating system and backups under your control; do not expose unrelated services through the same router rule.
8. Test locally, then test remotely
- Connect from the host computer using the local server address.
- Connect from another device on the same network to distinguish a server problem from an internet-routing problem.
- Ask a friend on a different network to test the public address and port.
- Record the exact error, time and console messages if the remote test fails. This information identifies whether the issue is a client mismatch, firewall rule, router forwarding or provider networking.
How friends install and join
Every player must reproduce the server’s software combination. Tell them the exact The Pioneers release, Minecraft version and Forge version rather than sending a mixture of individual mods.

- Use Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge version paired with that release.
- Allow the launcher to finish downloading and applying the complete profile before starting the game.

- If the connection fails, stop changing random client files and compare the release and loader values character by character with the server.
The server pack contains server-side folders and files that are not a replacement for the client profile. Players should install the normal client profile for the same release, while the host runs the server pack.
Using a managed hosting service
CurseForge documents a hosted-server workflow for supported modpacks that provide a matching server pack:
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Choose a supported modpack and its matching server pack in the hosting flow.
- Select a plan and a geographic region.
- Complete the purchase through Tebex.
- Wait for provisioning by Shockbyte, the provider identified in CurseForge’s workflow.
- Use the resulting share link or import code so friends can receive the modpack and connection information in CurseForge.
Before ordering, confirm that the host supports The Pioneers 8.2, Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge version attached to that release. Also check the plan’s memory allocation: a plan that cannot provide the pack author’s 8 GB-or-more recommendation is a poor fit even if installation is advertised as one click.
Ask the provider how it handles world downloads, scheduled backups, file access, modpack updates, crashes and changing regions. A managed panel reduces operating-system and router work, but it does not remove the need to verify that the deployed server pack matches the clients.

Updating without breaking the world
Do not overwrite a running installation blindly when a new release appears. Modpacks can change mods, configuration and scripts together.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console.
- Copy the world,
MODS,CONFIG,KUBEJSand relevant server configuration to a dated backup location. - Read the new release’s server-pack notes and record its Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Extract the new server pack into a separate test folder rather than replacing the working folder immediately.
- Apply the documented migration steps, then start the test copy and inspect the console for missing or incompatible content.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule the production update and tell players which client release to install.
Keeping the old server folder intact gives you a recovery path if the updated pack changes world behavior or fails during startup.

Troubleshooting The Pioneers server
The server fails immediately
- Confirm that you downloaded the server pack from the same release you selected for the clients.
- Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge version named by that server-pack release.
- Check that the archive was extracted completely into a clean folder and that the start script is being run from that folder.
- Run the script from a terminal so the first error remains visible.
Mods are missing or startup errors mention absent files
The most likely cause is using the ordinary client pack instead of the author’s server pack, or extracting the archive into the wrong directory level. Rebuild a clean folder from the matching server archive and verify the presence of MODS, CONFIG and KUBEJS.
The server runs out of memory
The pack is described as large and mod-heavy, and its author recommends at least 8 GB. Check the server’s actual allocation and available physical memory, close unnecessary applications, and monitor usage during active exploration. Do not treat 8 GB as a measured maximum player capacity; no independent capacity test is published.
The Tool Desk

- Compare the client’s The Pioneers release, Minecraft version and Forge version with the server.
- Check whether the host can connect locally. If not, fix the server before troubleshooting the internet.
- If local connections work, test the firewall and router rule using the port configured in the server properties.
- For a managed host, verify that the provider deployed the intended server-pack version and ask its support team to check the endpoint.
A managed deployment has the wrong files
Compare the provider panel’s selected release with the release your players installed. CurseForge’s hosted flow supports matching pack deployment, but the host still needs to provision the intended version. Save the deployment details and contact the provider’s support channel, identified as Shockbyte in the documented workflow.
Operational checklist
- Release number is identical on server and every client.
- Minecraft is 1.20.1 for The Pioneers 8.2.
- Forge matches the version named by the server-pack release.
- The author’s server pack, not the client profile, was extracted.
MODS,CONFIGandKUBEJSare present at the server root.- The supplied start script has been run and the EULA has been accepted only after reading it.
- At least 8 GB is allocated where the host’s hardware can support it.
- Firewall, router or private-network access has been tested from outside the host’s local network.
- World and configuration backups exist before updates or major changes.
- Friends have the exact client profile and connection address.
Which hosting method should you choose?
Self-hosting is appropriate when you have a computer that can remain online, are comfortable with firewall and router configuration, and want direct control over files and backups. Managed hosting is preferable when you want a persistent public endpoint, a selectable region, provider infrastructure and a simpler way to distribute the exact pack profile. In both cases, compatibility discipline matters more than the installation interface: the server pack, Minecraft version, Forge version and client release must remain aligned.
The Bottom Line
Use The Pioneers 8.2’s matching server pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 with the Forge version specified in that release, allocate at least 8 GB where your hardware permits, and keep every client on the same release. Self-hosting offers maximum file control but requires network administration; managed hosting removes much of that work but requires checking the provider’s current release support, memory and pricing.
