Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Use the official Cobblemon Fabric server package, choose a Minecraft: Java Edition release supported by that package, and install the same Minecraft, Fabric, and Cobblemon versions for every player. The current official Modrinth compatibility listing identifies Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1 for the Fabric pack, although supported versions can change as new releases appear. Plan for at least 2.5 GB of server memory; the Cobblemon maintainers recommend 3 GB or more.
Cobblemon does not operate an official public server. You either run the server yourself or rent a managed Minecraft server that can install the exact Fabric package you selected. The procedure below covers both the technical setup and the version checks that prevent most connection failures.

What you are actually hosting
Cobblemon is an open-source Pokémon mod for Fabric and NeoForge. This guide is specifically for the official Cobblemon [Fabric] modpack on Minecraft: Java Edition. Bedrock Edition, NeoForge installations, and unrelated third-party modpacks require different files and are not interchangeable.
The official distribution separates a client modpack from a server package. A client profile may contain optional client-only conveniences, while a dedicated server needs the server distribution and its documented dependencies. Downloading the first file that happens to be labeled “Cobblemon” is a common cause of startup and connection problems.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
The official listing states that the server package and client modpack can connect to vanilla Cobblemon servers and clients, but a complete modpack server still requires the matching Fabric components and release versions. Treat the Minecraft version, Fabric Loader version, Fabric API version, and Cobblemon version as one compatibility set.
Requirements and decisions before installation
Choose Minecraft: Java Edition and a supported release
Decide the Minecraft version before creating any folders or ordering hosting. At the time of the current official Modrinth listing, Cobblemon [Fabric] supports Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1. That list is release-dependent, so verify the version shown on the official download page each time you install or upgrade.
- A Java Edition account and launcher are required for players.
- Every client must use the same Minecraft release selected for the server.
- Do not mix a 1.20.1 server with a 1.21.1 client, even if both are labeled Fabric.
- Record the exact Cobblemon pack release and Fabric Loader release in a small text file so you can reproduce the installation.
Decide between self-hosting and managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you control over the server files, Java options, backups, and additional server-side content, but you are responsible for the operating system, network reachability, updates, and recovery. A managed provider handles much of the machine administration in exchange for a recurring charge. The official Cobblemon listing names third-party hosting options such as BisectHosting, but the official pages do not state current prices, hardware guarantees, player limits, or service-level terms.
| Consideration | Self-hosted machine | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Existing hardware may avoid a new server purchase; electricity and network costs still apply. | Usually no server hardware purchase, but the provider’s current setup and plan charges must be checked directly. |
| Recurring cost | Not stated by the Cobblemon project; depends on electricity, internet service, and hardware. | Provider pricing is not stated in the official Cobblemon sources and varies by plan and region. |
| File and JVM control | Full control over files, Java settings, backups, and additional mods. | Control depends on the provider’s panel and plan; confirm that custom Fabric packages and Java options are allowed. |
| Setup effort | You perform installation, firewall and network work, updates, and troubleshooting. | The panel may simplify deployment, while you still select the correct Minecraft, Fabric, and Cobblemon versions. |
| Latency and location | Players connect to your internet connection and geographic location. | You can usually select a data-center region; actual latency depends on the provider and players’ locations. |
| Capacity | Limited by CPU, memory, storage, and upload bandwidth available to you. | Limited by the purchased plan and the host’s stated resources; verify capacity for your expected player count. |
Plan memory realistically
The official Cobblemon modpack listing gives a minimum allocation of 2.5 GB and recommends 3 GB or more. Those figures are the maintainers’ current guidance, not a promise of a fixed player count. A large world, higher view distance, many simultaneous players, or extra server-side mods can require more resources. The official pages do not provide a formula for converting player count or view distance into an exact allocation.
Rank #2
- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
| Allocation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Below 2.5 GB | Below the published minimum; expect startup failures, crashes, or severe garbage-collection pressure. |
| 2.5 GB | Published minimum for the official modpack. |
| 3 GB or more | Published recommendation; leave additional headroom when using a larger world, more players, or extra content. |
Memory is only one resource. A machine can have enough RAM and still perform poorly if its CPU is overloaded, storage is slow, or the network upload connection is inadequate.
Step 1: Select and download the correct official release
- Open the official Cobblemon [Fabric] release on the project’s Modrinth or CurseForge listing.
- Read the Minecraft version displayed for that release and write it down before downloading anything.
- Choose the server distribution, not only the client profile. The listing distinguishes these packages.
- Keep the downloaded archive or installer unchanged until you have confirmed its version and contents.
- Download the client pack for players from the same release line. Do not let one player independently choose a newer or older Cobblemon release.
Official releases can change their supported Minecraft versions. Recheck the release page before an upgrade rather than assuming that a newer Minecraft version is compatible with an existing world.
Step 2: Install the Fabric server components
The official Cobblemon installation documentation identifies three required Fabric components: the recommended Fabric Loader for the selected Minecraft version, Fabric API, and the Cobblemon Fabric mod. Use the versions supplied or specified by the server package; do not substitute files from a different Minecraft release.
- Create a dedicated, writable directory for the server. Keeping it separate from the client game directory makes backups and permission management easier.
- Run the server package’s Fabric installation process, selecting the Minecraft version you recorded in Step 1 and the recommended Fabric Loader for that version.
- Place the matching Fabric API and Cobblemon Fabric files in the server’s
modsfolder. If the downloaded server distribution already supplies these files, use its copies rather than adding duplicates. - Check the filenames and versions before starting. Two copies of the same mod, or a Fabric API built for another Minecraft release, can prevent startup.
- Set the server’s Java memory allocation to at least 2.5 GB, with 3 GB or more as the maintainers’ recommendation. The exact launch syntax is supplied by the downloaded server package and differs by operating system.
Do not upload a complete client profile as a substitute for the server package. Client-only additions can fail on a dedicated server, and a server still needs the loader and libraries expected by its own distribution.

- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.

Step 3: Complete the first server start
Start the Fabric server with the launch command included in the server distribution. Because launch commands vary by package and operating system, copy the command from that release rather than relying on an old tutorial.
- Start the server once and wait for it to generate its initial files.
- When Minecraft displays its EULA request, read and accept the EULA in the generated configuration file only if you agree to it.
- Stop the process cleanly after the first generation pass. A clean stop lets the world and configuration files finish writing.
- Open
server.propertiesand set the gameplay options you need, such as the server name and other documented settings. - Configure the whitelist before inviting players if the server is intended for a private group.
- Grant operator permissions only to trusted administrators and keep a separate record of who has them.
- Create a backup of the newly generated world and configuration before making major changes.
- Start the server again with the same launch command and watch the console for a completed, error-free startup.
The canonical Cobblemon pages do not prescribe a universal port number, firewall rule, or operating-system command. Those details depend on your platform and network. Follow current Fabric and Minecraft server documentation for firewall, router, Java, and service-management instructions instead of copying values from an unrelated version.
Step 4: Install the matching client pack
The official Cobblemon Wiki recommends the Modrinth App for client installation. This route reduces manual file copying and makes it easier for players to select the same official pack.
- Install and open the Modrinth App.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account when the app requests authentication.
- Type
Cobblemoninto the app’s search bar. - Select the official Cobblemon [Fabric] modpack, not a similarly named community pack.
- Choose the same Minecraft and Cobblemon release recorded for the server, then install it.
- Launch the profile once to allow its files to finish installing.
- Have every player repeat the version check before connecting.
Players should not add arbitrary mods while diagnosing a connection problem. Test with the official profile first; add server-approved extras only after the base pack works for everyone.

- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Step 5: Connect and verify the installation
- Start the server and wait until its console indicates that it has finished loading.
- From a client running the matching official Fabric profile, open the multiplayer screen and add the server address supplied by the administrator.
- Join with one test account before distributing the address to the whole group.
- Confirm that a player can enter the world, move around, and use Cobblemon features without immediate disconnects.
- Test a second client profile if possible. A successful single-player test does not prove that every player’s files match.
- Once the test succeeds, share the address privately or through the community channel you control.
Keep the address private while testing. A whitelist and regular backups are safer than relying on an address being difficult to guess.
Version matching: the rule that prevents most failures
For a reliable connection, match all of the following on the server and every client:
- Minecraft: Java Edition version.
- Fabric Loader version or the loader range required by the selected pack.
- Fabric API version supplied for that Minecraft release.
- Cobblemon mod and official modpack release.
- Any additional server-required mods that you deliberately installed.
Fabric alone is not a compatibility guarantee. Two installations can both say “Fabric” while targeting different Minecraft versions or different Cobblemon releases.

The server stops during startup
- Confirm that the server package targets the Minecraft version you selected.
- Check that Fabric Loader, Fabric API, and Cobblemon are all Fabric files for that same release.
- Remove duplicate copies of a mod from the
modsfolder. - Verify that the process has at least 2.5 GB allocated and increase it toward 3 GB or more if the machine has available memory.
- Read the first clear error in the console rather than only the final shutdown line; the first error usually identifies the incompatible file or missing dependency.
A player is rejected or disconnected on join
- Compare the player’s Minecraft version with the server’s recorded version.
- Compare the Cobblemon and Fabric API versions, not just the launcher profile name.
- Have the player launch the official Cobblemon [Fabric] profile from the Modrinth App instead of a manually assembled profile.
- Remove unapproved client mods temporarily and retry.
- Restart both client and server after replacing files so neither side continues using an old loaded version.
The server starts but becomes unstable under load
- Check memory usage and move from the 2.5 GB minimum toward or above the 3 GB recommendation.
- Reduce demanding world settings or the number of additional server-side mods.
- Check CPU, storage, and network usage; additional RAM cannot compensate for a saturated processor or upload connection.
- Make a backup before changing world or performance settings.
Players cannot reach the server at all
- Confirm that the server process is running and that the address was copied correctly.
- Check the host machine’s firewall and network configuration using current Minecraft server documentation for your operating system.
- Test from the same local network and from an outside network separately to identify whether the problem is local routing or external reachability.
- If you use a managed host, ask its support team which address and connection settings apply to the selected server instance.
Backups, updates, and safe version changes
Cobblemon is actively updated, so treat an upgrade as a coordinated change rather than replacing one file while players are online.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the world,
server.properties, whitelist, operator permissions, and the complete server configuration. - Record the current Minecraft, Fabric Loader, Fabric API, and Cobblemon versions.
- Read the new official release notes and confirm that the target Minecraft version is supported.
- Install the new server package or matching components in a separate directory when practical, preserving the old installation as a rollback copy.
- Update every client to the same release before reopening the server.
- Start the updated server without deleting the old backup, test with an administrator account, and watch the console for errors.
- Only then invite the rest of the players.
Never assume that a world created on one Cobblemon release is automatically safe on every later release. A backup gives you a recovery path if a mod update changes world data or introduces an incompatibility.

How much control do you need?
Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable maintaining a Java server, managing backups and network access, and troubleshooting Fabric files. Choose a managed host when reducing machine administration is worth a recurring fee, but verify before paying that the provider supports the exact Minecraft/Fabric release and lets you upload or select the official Cobblemon server package. In either case, you remain responsible for keeping clients and server on the same release.
The official project does not provide a central Cobblemon server. Your server’s uptime, address, moderation, backups, and upgrade schedule belong to you or to the provider you select.
