The reliable way to host The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey is to run the exact Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge release on both the server and every client. A managed Minecraft host can install the CurseForge pack from its control panel; self-hosting requires the matching official server-pack ZIP, not a copied client instance. Published guidance places starting memory between 6GB and 12GB, with the right amount determined by players, view distance, world generation and automation.

What The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey server is

The Ancient Dawn – Prehistoric Journey is an Apotheotic_Studios Minecraft modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 running on Forge. CurseForge lists version 5.9 as the current release and provides a corresponding v5.9_Server file. A server is therefore not a generic 1.20.1 installation: it is a versioned Forge instance containing the pack’s server files, configuration and overrides.

The pack has passed 361,000 downloads on one 2026 provider page capture and 370,300 installs on another. Those figures indicate substantial interest, but they are not capacity tests. No official player cap or independent performance benchmark establishes how many people one machine can support.

Choose managed hosting or self-hosting

Your first decision is operational rather than technical. A managed host supplies a panel, storage and a running machine; self-hosting gives you control over the operating system and hardware but makes you responsible for installation, networking, updates and recovery.

Factor Managed Minecraft host Self-hosted machine
Installation Usually a one-click CurseForge or modpack installer. Download the official server pack, install or start Forge, and perform the initial configuration yourself.
Hardware Choose a plan with allocated RAM, CPU and storage. You select and maintain the physical or virtual machine.
Networking The host normally exposes a ready-to-share server address. You must make the service reachable from the internet and secure the machine; an authoritative port recipe is not established for this pack.
Backups and protection Some plans advertise scheduled backups or DDoS protection; confirm what is included. You must design, test and retain your own backups and network protection.
Version control Panels can make selecting a specific CurseForge release easier, but verify the selected file. You control every file and can keep a precise archive of the server pack and configuration.
Cost Recurring monthly charge based on resources and location. Hardware, electricity or a virtual-server bill, plus your time.

Choose managed hosting when you want the shortest path to a playable server or do not want to administer Linux, Windows, networking and backups. Choose self-hosting when you already operate a suitable machine and are comfortable troubleshooting Java, Forge and network access.

How much RAM does the server need?

Published recommendations are not identical. PLAYNHOST states 6GB as a starting point. Game Host Bros states 10GB or more as its recommendation and plan minimum. WinterNode describes 6–12GB as typical depending on player count and view distance, and recommends 12GB. Treat those figures as planning guidance rather than a guaranteed requirement.

Starting situation Practical allocation Why it may change
Small private group, modest view distance Start around 6GB. Exploration, chunk generation, entities or automation can increase use.
Several players exploring together Plan for roughly 8–10GB. Simultaneous chunk generation and more loaded entities create peaks.
Larger group, high view distance or heavily automated bases Plan for 10–12GB or more if monitoring shows pressure. Loaded chunks, machines, mobs and plugins/mod interactions can require additional headroom.

RAM is not the only constraint. A fast CPU matters for the main server tick, storage affects startup and world saves, and network quality affects latency. Allocate memory the server can actually use, but leave enough for the operating system and panel. If the machine begins swapping, increasing the Java heap alone will not solve the problem.

Managed hosting: exact installation flow

Panel labels differ, but the documented CurseForge workflow is consistent. Before ordering, check that the plan allows custom modpacks, exposes the required release, offers enough memory for your group and has a data-center location near most players.

  1. Order a Minecraft server plan. Select RAM using the usage guidance above rather than choosing the smallest plan automatically. Confirm storage, CPU allocation, backup policy, cancellation terms and server location.
  2. Open the modpack installer. In the control panel, open the Modpacks section and choose CurseForge (or the panel’s equivalent CurseForge installer).
  3. Search for the complete pack name. Enter The Ancient Dawn - Prehistoric Journey. Check that the result is the Apotheotic_Studios pack, not a similarly named project.
  4. Select Minecraft 1.20.1. If the panel presents multiple files, choose the release that explicitly uses Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. Do not let the panel silently install another game version.
  5. Select the exact pack release. CurseForge currently lists v5.9. If you are joining an existing world, select the same release already used by that world rather than automatically upgrading.
  6. Install and wait for first startup. The first launch can take substantially longer while Forge creates libraries, configurations and the world. Do not repeatedly stop and restart the process while files are being installed.
  7. Review the console and server settings. Confirm that Forge starts without a missing-mod error, the world reaches a ready state and the panel reports the expected Minecraft and pack versions. Accept the Minecraft EULA when the host presents that requirement.
  8. Install the matching client pack. Every player should install the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile and the same Ancient Dawn release. A client on a newer pack cannot reliably join an older server pack.
  9. Share the assigned address. Send players the hostname and port displayed by the provider. Have one player connect first, then add the rest after confirming that authentication, loading and movement work normally.

WinterNode advertises one-click installation and recommends 12GB. PLAYNHOST documents panel installation with a 6GB starting plan. Game Host Bros advertises one-click deployment with 10GB or more. CreeperHost advertises one-click CurseForge setup, DDoS protection and backups. These are provider claims, not independent tests; verify current prices, locations, included resources and terms before paying.

Self-hosting with the official server pack

Self-hosting starts with the release artifact, not with a working client folder. CurseForge’s official entries include server-pack downloads; older entries use names such as v5.2_SERVER_TAD.zip, while the current listing provides a v5.9_Server file. The filename can change, so select the server package attached to the exact release you intend to run.

1. Prepare the machine

  • Use a 64-bit operating system and a current Java installation compatible with Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge build shipped by the pack.
  • Reserve enough physical RAM for the chosen heap plus the operating system, file cache and any control panel.
  • Use fast, reliable storage with free space for the server files, world growth, logs and at least one backup.
  • Create a dedicated server directory and a non-administrator account where practical. Avoid running an internet-facing game process with unnecessary system privileges.

2. Download and unpack the correct release

  1. Open the Ancient Dawn project on CurseForge and verify the release number, Minecraft version and loader.
  2. Download the matching official server-pack ZIP, not the ordinary client download.
  3. Extract it into the dedicated server directory. Preserve the directory structure, manifest and override files supplied by the pack.
  4. Do not merge files from a different Ancient Dawn release or from another modpack.

Modpacks.ch’s setup guidance states: “Do not upload the ordinary client folder blindly.” A client instance can contain launcher metadata, client-only mods and settings that are inappropriate for a dedicated server. The official server archive is the safer starting point.

3. Run the supplied Forge setup

Use the startup or installation script included in the server pack, following its readme and the filenames it actually contains. Server packs differ in whether Forge is already installed or whether an installer must be run once. Do not substitute a guessed JAR filename or a Forge build from another release. On the first run, the server normally creates configuration files and an EULA file; stop if the console reports a missing library, incompatible Java version or missing mod instead of repeatedly launching it.

4. Accept the EULA and set memory

Read the generated EULA, set its acceptance only if you agree to it, and save the file. Configure the startup script’s minimum and maximum heap values according to your plan. Begin within the 6–12GB guidance range, then observe actual use under the group’s normal play style. Keep the operating system outside the heap allocation.

5. Start, test and protect the instance

  1. Start the server through the supplied script and wait until the console reports that it is ready.
  2. Join locally or from the same network first, if possible. Create or load the intended world and test movement, block interaction, inventory, mobs and a return connection.
  3. Set operator permissions only for trusted administrators. Keep the server address private until testing is complete.
  4. Configure the host firewall and router according to your operating system and network design. Because no authoritative Ancient Dawn-specific firewall or port recipe is established, use the platform’s current Minecraft documentation rather than copying an unverified rule.
  5. Record the server-pack version, Forge version, Java version, memory settings and world location. This record makes rollback and support requests much easier.

Version matching: the non-negotiable checklist

Most failed connections are version mismatches. Check each item before troubleshooting anything more complicated.

Mattel Games UNO Minecraft Card Game with Storage Tin,Ages 7+
  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
  • Pack release: the server and every client use the same Ancient Dawn release, such as v5.9.
  • Minecraft: both sides use Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • Loader: both sides use the Forge build required by that release.
  • Files: a self-hosted server began from the official server-pack archive, not a copied client directory.
  • Configuration: do not overwrite server configuration with a different release’s files unless the pack’s instructions explicitly require it.
  • World lifecycle: take a backup before upgrading the pack or changing major settings.

Never update only the client. If you move from one pack release to another, stage the server update, back up the world, update the server files, then distribute the identical client release to players.

Performance tuning that helps first

Control view and simulation distance

View distance determines how far terrain is sent to clients; simulation distance determines how much of the world actively ticks. Start conservatively, then increase one setting at a time. High values multiply loaded chunks for every player and can overwhelm a server that otherwise has sufficient RAM.

Pre-generate terrain

Game Host Bros recommends pre-generating chunks to reduce lag during exploration. Generate the area before inviting the full group, monitor storage growth and keep a backup. Pre-generation moves the cost to a controlled maintenance window; it does not remove the storage and memory required to keep chunks loaded during play.

Watch entities and automation

Mob farms, item transport, storage systems and other automation can create more work than ordinary building. Spread large farms out, remove abandoned entities and investigate recurring tick delays before simply allocating more RAM.

Use monitoring instead of guesswork

  • Look for repeated “can’t keep up” warnings and note when they occur.
  • Compare lag during exploration, combat and visits to automated bases.
  • Check memory usage after garbage collection rather than reacting to a momentary peak.
  • Track disk space and backup duration as the world grows.

Common failures and fixes

The panel installed the wrong game or release

Stop the server, inspect the installation summary and select Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge and the intended Ancient Dawn release. Do not attempt to repair a mixed installation by copying random mods from a client. Reinstall from the panel’s verified pack entry or replace the files with the matching official server pack.

Players receive a mismatched-mod or incompatible-version error

Compare the pack release, Minecraft version and Forge version on the server and the affected client. Remove old client profiles, recreate the 1.20.1 Forge profile and install the exact server release. If only one player fails, have that player reinstall the profile rather than changing the server for everyone.

The server stops during startup

Read the first meaningful error in the console, not just the final shutdown line. Missing libraries indicate an incomplete install; a Java error indicates an incompatible runtime; a missing-mod error indicates a damaged or mixed pack. Restore the official server archive, verify free disk space and start again with the documented script.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server lags when players explore

Exploration triggers world generation and can cause short-term spikes. Pre-generate the intended play area, reduce view or simulation distance, ensure storage is not saturated and review the CPU allocation. If the issue persists with multiple players, move to the next RAM tier only after checking these bottlenecks.

The server lags near a base

Inspect mob counts, item piles and automated machines in the affected area. Disable or redesign the heaviest systems, remove unnecessary entities and retest. A larger heap may delay garbage collection pressure, but it cannot make an overloaded main thread perform unlimited work.

A world appears to be missing after an update

Stop the server and check the configured world name and directory before creating a new world. Restore the most recent known-good backup if files were moved or overwritten. Never test an upgrade on the only copy of a valued world.

Backups, updates and routine administration

  • Back up before every pack, Forge or configuration change. Include the world, server configuration, scripts and a record of the exact release.
  • Keep more than one generation. A daily copy plus older weekly copies protects against discovering corruption several days later.
  • Store at least one copy away from the server. A backup on the same disk does not protect against disk failure or an accidental deletion.
  • Test restoration. A backup is useful only if it can be opened on a separate test instance.
  • Schedule maintenance. Announce restarts, stop the server cleanly and wait for saves to finish before rebooting the machine.
  • Document changes. Record who changed the pack, when it happened and whether the world was tested afterward.

Managed providers may include backups or DDoS protection, but advertised features vary by plan. Confirm retention, restore controls, backup location and exclusions in the provider’s current terms rather than assuming that “backup” means a complete, downloadable world copy.

How to compare hosting plans

Price alone does not identify the best host for this pack. Compare the resources and operational controls that affect your particular group.

Comparison question What to verify
Memory Guaranteed RAM, upgrade steps and whether the advertised amount includes the operating system or panel.
CPU Dedicated or shared cores, processor generation and any published limits on CPU time.
Storage Disk type, included capacity, world-growth limits and how backups consume quota.
Location Data-center region, routing quality and latency for the majority of players.
Installation Whether the panel exposes CurseForge v5.9 and lets you pin the Minecraft 1.20.1 release.
Backups Frequency, retention, off-site storage, restore process and whether manual downloads are allowed.
Network protection DDoS coverage, rate limits and what support does during an attack.
Version control Ability to stop automatic updates, upload a specific server pack and roll back safely.
Support Support hours, response targets and whether staff help with modpack installation or only the underlying machine.
Total monthly cost Base price plus extra RAM, storage, backups, dedicated IPs, taxes and renewal rates.

What players need to install

Each player needs Minecraft 1.20.1, the Forge profile required by the selected Ancient Dawn release and that same release’s client files. Everyone should launch the game once with the correct profile before joining, allow required libraries to download and remove duplicate or older profiles that could be selected accidentally.

When a player reports a crash, ask for the exact pack release, Forge version, launcher profile and crash-log error. “It does not connect” is not enough to distinguish a mismatched mod from a server outage. Keep the server console open during the attempted connection so the two sides can be compared.

Bottom line for a dependable Ancient Dawn server

Use CurseForge’s exact Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge release, install the matching official server pack, and keep every client on that same release. A small private group can begin near 6GB; heavier exploration or automation makes 10–12GB a more sensible target. Managed hosting minimizes setup, while self-hosting is appropriate when you can maintain the machine, networking and backups yourself. Validate the installation with a test player, pre-generate terrain before busy exploration and preserve a tested backup before every update.
