Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Yes, one VPS can run several Ghost blogs. The reliable design is one independent Ghost installation per publication: each site gets its own directory, database credentials, systemd service, local port and canonical URL. Nginx listens publicly on ports 80 and 443, selects a server block from the requested domain, terminates HTTPS and proxies the request to the matching Ghost process.
The architecture that keeps sites separate
Imagine a VPS hosting blog-one.example.com and blog-two.example.com. Both domains resolve to the same IP address, but Nginx routes them to different local services:

| Layer | Blog one | Blog two |
|---|---|---|
| Public hostname | blog-one.example.com | blog-two.example.com |
| Ghost directory | /var/www/blog-one | /var/www/blog-two |
| Database account | Dedicated credentials | Dedicated credentials |
| Local Ghost listener | Example: 127.0.0.1:2368 | Example: 127.0.0.1:2369 |
| Process manager | Its own systemd unit | Its own systemd unit |
| Nginx server block | server_name blog-one.example.com | server_name blog-two.example.com |
| Canonical Ghost URL | https://blog-one.example.com | https://blog-two.example.com |
The port numbers in the table are an example allocation, not a Ghost-prescribed multi-site scheme. Ghost’s documentation describes independent installations rather than a fixed port plan, so choose unused loopback ports and record them for each site. Do not point two unrelated public domains at one Ghost process: a Ghost publication has one configured public URL. If a secondary domain is needed, make it redirect to that canonical URL.
Use a supported VPS baseline
Ghost’s official production guidance recommends Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, Nginx, systemd, HTTPS and a non-root operating user. It also lists a server with at least 1GB of memory. That memory figure is a minimum baseline for a Ghost server, not a promise that a 1GB VPS can run any number of publications.

| Requirement | Why it matters for several blogs |
|---|---|
| Ubuntu 24 | Provides the supported operating-system baseline for the documented production stack. |
| Node.js 22 LTS | Runs each Ghost release and should be installed before Ghost-CLI. |
| MySQL 8.0 | Stores each publication in its own database or, at minimum, with separately managed credentials. |
| Nginx | Owns ports 80/443 and routes domains to loopback Ghost services. |
| systemd | Starts services after reboot and can restart a failed instance. |
| HTTPS | Protects editor logins, Admin API traffic and public requests; Ghost expects the configured URL to match the secure scheme. |
| Non-root administration | Ghost commands and site files should not be operated as root. Ghost-CLI creates a low-privilege service user during setup. |
| At least 1GB RAM | The only explicit memory recommendation in the official guidance; real capacity varies by workload. |
Plan DNS before installing. Create an A (and, where appropriate, AAAA) record for every blog hostname, pointing to the VPS address. Certificate issuance and HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects will fail if a hostname does not resolve to the server or if ports 80 and 443 are blocked upstream.
Prepare the VPS before the first installation
Install the common software once
Node.js, MySQL, Nginx and Ghost-CLI are host-level prerequisites. Install the versions supported by Ghost’s current production documentation, then verify each version before creating sites. Keep the operating system updated and use a normal administrator account with sudo; do not run Ghost-CLI as root.
# Verify the prerequisite tools after installation
node --version
npm --version
mysql --version
nginx -v
ghost version
Package-manager commands differ by Ubuntu repository and by the Node.js installation method, so use the supported installation instructions for the exact release you selected rather than mixing packages from unrelated distributions.
Reserve a layout and port plan
Give every publication a predictable directory and an unused loopback port. For example:
/var/www/blog-one - 127.0.0.1:2368
/var/www/blog-two - 127.0.0.1:2369
/var/www/blog-three - 127.0.0.1:2370
These paths and ports are illustrative. The important rule is uniqueness. Write the mapping in your operations notes so that an Nginx change, backup job or incident response does not accidentally target the wrong publication.
Install each Ghost blog independently
Repeat the following workflow for every domain. Complete one site and test it before beginning the next; that makes a bad database password, DNS record or certificate easier to isolate.

1. Create and enter the site directory
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/blog-one
sudo chown "$USER":"$USER" /var/www/blog-one
cd /var/www/blog-one
Use a different directory for the next publication. The directory should contain only that installation’s Ghost files and content.
2. Run Ghost-CLI as a non-root user
ghost install
Answer the installer prompts for the site’s canonical URL, MySQL database and credentials. Supply https://blog-one.example.com for the first site and the corresponding HTTPS URL for the next one. Use separate database credentials for each publication and keep those secrets outside public documentation.
Ghost-CLI’s production setup can perform the database, Nginx, SSL, migration, Linux-user and systemd stages. The generated directory contains the installation configuration, content, current release, system files and installed versions. That structure is valuable when upgrading or restoring because files from one publication remain inside its own tree.
3. Let ghost setup complete the production stages
When a controlled rollout is preferable, run the setup stages individually instead of accepting the complete sequence at once. The stages should result in:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- A MySQL database and account for this publication.
- An Nginx configuration for this hostname.
- A certificate and HTTPS configuration through the SSL tooling used by Ghost-CLI.
- A low-privilege Linux service user.
- Database migration and a systemd unit for this installation.
Repeat the process in /var/www/blog-two with its own URL, database credentials and service identity. Never copy one site’s config.production.json into another site without changing the URL, database settings and any instance-specific secrets.
4. Confirm the local process and identity
Each installation must have a distinct running process and a distinct local listener. Check the service status produced by Ghost-CLI and verify that Nginx’s upstream points to the same port. Ghost’s official documentation does not prescribe a single multi-site port allocation; the separation is an operational requirement of running independent installations.

Configure Nginx to route each domain
Nginx chooses a server block using the request’s Host header. A typical HTTP-to-Ghost proxy for one site looks like this:
server {
listen 80;
server_name blog-one.example.com;
location / {
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header Host $http_host;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:2368;
}
}
Create a separate server block for blog-two.example.com and change both server_name and proxy_pass to that installation’s values. The essential headers preserve the visitor’s IP, protocol and original host. Ghost is designed to run behind a reverse proxy, and the original host is needed for canonical-URL decisions.
Set the forwarded protocol correctly
When Nginx terminates TLS on port 443, the upstream request to Ghost is still local HTTP. Set X-Forwarded-Proto to https in the TLS server block (or use the equivalent value generated by your configuration). If Ghost receives an incorrect protocol, it can repeatedly redirect an HTTPS request back to HTTPS.
Ghost-CLI can write the certificate and Nginx configuration during setup. If you edit the generated file manually, preserve its certificate paths and include the same proxy headers in the secure virtual host. Validate syntax before reloading:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
Allow the upload sizes your editors need
Nginx’s default request-size limit may be too small for large images, theme archives, imports, audio or video. Add a policy appropriate to your publication, such as:
client_max_body_size 50m;
The value above is an example policy, not a Ghost requirement. Place it in the relevant server or location context, then test an upload from that site’s Admin interface. A limit that is raised in one server block does not affect the others.

Keep certificates and domains aligned
Issue a certificate for each exact hostname used in a server block. A certificate for blog-one.example.com does not automatically cover an unrelated hostname. Certificate issuance requires correct DNS and reachability on port 80; HTTPS traffic requires port 443 to reach Nginx.
Isolation rules for files, databases and services
Multi-site reliability depends more on boundaries than on the number of domains. Apply these rules to every installation:
- Files: keep content, configuration, current release, system files and installed versions inside that site’s Ghost-CLI directory.
- Database: use separate credentials and document which database belongs to which publication.
- Processes: give each installation its own systemd unit and local port.
- Ownership: after migrations or manual file operations, verify that the low-privilege Ghost service user can read and write the paths it needs.
- Nginx: use one server block per domain and point it only to that domain’s local service.
- Backups: keep database and content backups attributable to one publication so a restore cannot overwrite a neighbor.
Ghost-CLI’s systemd integration starts an instance after reboot and can restart a failed process. That improves recovery for an individual blog, but it does not prevent a full VPS outage from affecting every site; maintain backups outside the server.

Run this checklist separately for each hostname:
- Confirm DNS resolves the hostname to the VPS address.
- Open the HTTP URL and verify it redirects to the HTTPS canonical URL.
- Open the public homepage and the matching
/ghost/Admin URL. - Log in and upload an image; test a file near the Nginx request-size limit if large media is expected.
- Check that links, redirects and generated asset URLs use this site’s hostname, not another publication’s.
- Stop and start the site’s systemd service, then confirm that only that blog is unavailable during the test.
- Reboot during a maintenance window and verify that each service returns automatically.
- Inspect Nginx and Ghost logs for upstream errors, certificate warnings and unexpected hostnames.
This process catches the most common cross-site mistakes before readers encounter them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capacity, costs and the point where this design stops scaling
The 1GB figure is a floor, not a site count
The official guidance specifies at least 1GB of memory but does not publish a dated benchmark for how many independent blogs a VPS can support. Do not convert that recommendation into a fixed number of sites. Capacity depends on simultaneous page traffic, Admin and API activity, database size, image and media processing, backups, theme behavior and cache hit rate.
Monitor memory pressure, CPU utilization, disk space, MySQL load and response times while adding publications. Leave headroom for migrations and media processing; a server that is adequate for quiet brochure blogs may struggle when several editors import content or publish at once.

Budget services beyond the VPS
Self-hosting does not eliminate operational costs. Plan separately for email delivery, analytics and any CDN or caching service. Those services are outside the VPS bill and may need separate configuration and credentials for each publication.
Do not build a Ghost cluster for one publication
Ghost’s clustering guidance states that it does not support load-balanced clustering or multi-server setups and that there should be one Ghost instance per site. Hosting several different publications on one VPS is consistent with that boundary because each publication has one instance. It is not a supported way to run several Ghost nodes for one publication behind a load balancer.
When traffic grows, place caching or a CDN in front of the single Ghost instance and measure the result. If the VPS itself becomes the bottleneck, move the site to a larger server or a supported hosting arrangement rather than adding unsanctioned Ghost nodes.
Ghost-CLI versus manual configuration
| Decision axis | Ghost-CLI per installation | Manual Nginx/systemd work |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation | Creates a repeatable directory and service pattern for each site. | You must design and audit every directory, unit, port and permission boundary yourself. |
| Operational automation | Can perform database, Nginx, SSL, migration, user and systemd stages. | Each stage is explicit and offers tighter control, but requires more maintenance. |
| Certificates | Setup can arrange HTTPS certificate issuance and Nginx integration. | You manage certificate issuance, renewal hooks and configuration changes. |
| Backup boundaries | The per-site directory and credentials make ownership easier to document. | You must define equivalent boundaries in scripts and restore procedures. |
| Failure isolation | Separate units and ports make a failed site easier to identify and restart. | Isolation is possible, but a typo in a shared configuration can affect multiple sites. |
| Support boundary | Matches the documented one-instance-per-site model. | Still supported only when each publication remains a single Ghost instance; manual work does not make clustering supported. |
For most portfolios, Ghost-CLI is the safer default because the same sequence can be repeated for every directory. Use individual stages when you have a reason to review database, certificate or service changes before allowing the next stage to run.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| The wrong blog appears | Check the request hostname, the Nginx server_name, the selected server block and the upstream port. Confirm that the Ghost url for each installation is its own canonical HTTPS address. |
| Infinite HTTPS redirects | Inspect X-Forwarded-Proto. When TLS ends at Nginx, Ghost must be told the original request was HTTPS. Also verify the configured Ghost URL uses https://. |
| 502 Bad Gateway | Check that the correct Ghost systemd service is running, that it is listening on the port in proxy_pass, and that Nginx was not pointed at another installation’s port. |
| Uploads fail | Raise client_max_body_size in that site’s server block and verify filesystem ownership and free disk space. Reload Nginx after a configuration change. |
| Certificate warning | Confirm DNS, port 80 and port 443 reachability, and that the certificate covers the exact hostname in the address bar and Nginx configuration. |
| One site disrupts another | Audit directories, systemd units, database users, local ports and Nginx server blocks for accidental sharing. Check ownership after migrations or manual copies. |
| Slow pages or high load | Inspect Nginx, Ghost and MySQL logs and resource usage. Add caching or a CDN before considering any multi-node Ghost design; clustered Ghost nodes are outside the supported model. |
Operational habits that prevent repeat incidents
- Keep a site inventory containing domain, directory, database name, service identity, local port and backup location.
- Apply Ghost updates one publication at a time, checking its Admin area and public pages before proceeding to the next.
- Test database and content restores on a separate location; a backup that has never been restored is not a verified recovery plan.
- After changing a domain, update the Ghost canonical URL and the matching Nginx server block together, then renew the certificate for the new hostname.
- Review logs and disk usage regularly. Media libraries and database growth can exhaust a small VPS even when page traffic is modest.
The result is a straightforward portfolio architecture: one supported Ghost instance per publication, with Nginx acting as the domain-aware HTTPS gateway. Clear per-site boundaries make upgrades, troubleshooting and recovery predictable without relying on unsupported Ghost clustering.
