To host multiple domains on one VPS with Virtualmin, install Virtualmin on a supported Linux server, give the server a fully qualified hostname, point each domain’s DNS records to the VPS address, and create the appropriate Virtualmin account for each domain. Use a top-level virtual server for an independently managed site, a sub-server for an additional domain controlled by an existing owner, and an alias when another domain should display the same site and use the same email addresses.
Virtualmin places multiple websites on one machine by creating separate virtual-server configurations. The domains share the VPS hardware and operating-system resources, but each can have its own web root, logs, SSL certificate, mail settings, databases, and quotas when configured as a top-level virtual server.
How Virtualmin hosts multiple domains on one VPS
Virtualmin is an administration layer for Webmin that manages virtual servers on a single Linux host. A virtual server is a domain-specific configuration rather than a separate physical server. The web server uses the requested hostname to select the matching site, while Virtualmin keeps domain ownership, files, logs, mail, databases, SSL settings, and limits organized by account.
This arrangement works because HTTP and HTTPS requests include a hostname. When a visitor requests example-one.tld, the web server routes the request to that domain’s virtual-host configuration; a request for example-two.tld is routed to a different configuration on the same VPS. DNS does not perform that separation itself. DNS only directs each name to the VPS address; Virtualmin and the web server perform the final routing.

The important design decision is whether every domain is independent. A separate business or customer normally needs a top-level virtual server. A related domain managed by the same owner can be a sub-server. A spelling variant, alternate top-level domain, or campaign domain that should show exactly the same site is usually an alias.
What you need before installing Virtualmin
A fresh, supported Linux VPS
Start with a fresh VPS running a Linux distribution supported by the current Virtualmin installer and documentation, such as Rocky Linux, Debian, or an Ubuntu Server LTS release. The exact supported versions can change, so verify the current list before provisioning. The operating system and installed components should receive current security updates; Virtualmin’s manual guidance assumes reasonably modern software rather than an unmaintained distribution.
Do not install a control panel on a server that already contains production web, mail, DNS, or database services unless you have a tested migration plan. An installer may configure or replace service settings, and old configurations can conflict with the virtual-server layout.
A fully qualified hostname
Set a fully qualified hostname for the VPS before installation. Use a name such as server.example.net that is distinct from the websites you plan to host. The hostname should not be one of the customer or site domains, because the control panel and system services need their own stable identity.
Make sure the hostname resolves consistently to the VPS address and that the server itself reports the same name. A mismatch can make mail, TLS, logging, and administrative access harder to diagnose later.
A fixed public address and access to DNS
You need the VPS public IPv4 address and, if IPv6 is enabled, its IPv6 address. You also need permission to edit authoritative DNS for every domain. Without that access, you cannot complete normal web routing or certificate issuance.

A web-server choice
Choose Apache or Nginx during Virtualmin installation. Both are supported choices. Select the one that matches your application requirements and your team’s operational knowledge; changing the web-server architecture after sites are live is possible but adds migration work.

Plan your domains before creating accounts
Write down every domain, its intended owner, whether it needs a separate website, and whether it needs mail, databases, SSL, or a quota. This simple inventory prevents the most common structural error: creating an alias when an independent account was required, or creating several full accounts for names that should all serve one site.

An alias is deliberately different from a redirect. An alias makes the alternate hostname act as the same site at the server level. If you need visitors to end up at one canonical URL, configure the application or web-server redirect separately; do not assume that creating an alias automatically changes the browser’s address bar.
Install Virtualmin on the VPS
- Provision the server. Choose a supported Rocky Linux, Debian, or Ubuntu Server LTS image and allocate enough storage for website files, mail, databases, backups, and logs.
- Apply operating-system updates. Bring the base system and security packages up to date before installing the panel.
- Set the hostname. Configure a fully qualified name that is different from the domains you will host, and confirm that it resolves to the VPS.
- Choose Apache or Nginx. Make this selection during installation based on the applications you expect to run.
- Run the current Virtualmin installation process. Follow the release-specific installer documentation rather than copying an old command from an unrelated tutorial. Installer options and supported components can change.
- Record the administrative credentials and panel address. Restrict administrative access, use strong unique credentials, and preserve them in an appropriate password manager.
- Review enabled services. Virtualmin can manage web hosting, DNS, mail, SSL, databases, log rotation, and quotas. Keep only the components you intend to operate and secure.
The installer’s exact screens and defaults vary by release. The durable requirements are a supported, patched operating system, a distinct fully qualified hostname, and a deliberate choice of web server.

Point every domain’s DNS to the VPS
DNS must be correct before ordinary web routing and automated certificate requests can succeed. For each domain, create an A record pointing the name to the VPS IPv4 address. If the VPS is configured for IPv6, create the corresponding AAAA record. Use the names visitors will actually request, including any www hostname you plan to support.
- Open the authoritative DNS management interface for the domain.
- Create or update the apex record, such as
example.tld, with the VPS IPv4 address. - Add an
AAAArecord only when the VPS has working IPv6 connectivity and the web server is listening on IPv6. - Create the desired
wwwrecord, commonly as an address record or a CNAME to the apex name, according to your DNS provider’s rules. - Remove stale address records that still point to a previous host, unless you intentionally use multiple addresses and have configured the service for that arrangement.
- Wait for DNS caches to expire, then verify that each name resolves to the intended VPS address from more than one network.
DNS propagation is not a Virtualmin feature and cannot be forced by clicking a panel option. A certificate authority and visitors must be able to reach the domain at the VPS, so check resolution and firewall reachability before troubleshooting SSL.
Create an independent domain as a top-level virtual server
Use a top-level server for a site that needs its own owner, Unix account, home directory, administration, and resource controls. This is the normal choice for unrelated businesses, customers, or applications.
- Sign in to Virtualmin and choose Create Virtual Server.
- Enter the domain name exactly as it should appear in URLs and certificates.
- Choose the account owner and set a strong administrative password or the approved authentication method.
- Enable the website and create the domain’s Unix account and home directory.
- Enable DNS management if Virtualmin will host the domain’s DNS zone. If DNS remains with an external provider, keep the external records authoritative and avoid creating conflicting nameservers.
- Enable SSL for the domain and request a Let’s Encrypt certificate during creation when DNS and reachability are already correct.
- Enable mail, databases, log rotation, quotas, and other features only when the site needs them.
- Apply the appropriate plan or explicit limits for disk space, aliases, sub-servers, mailboxes, and databases.
- Finish creation, then note the document root, login owner, and enabled services for your deployment record.
Virtualmin’s documented creation pattern can provision a Unix account, home directory, Webmin login, website, DNS, mail, SSL, databases, log rotation, and plan-based limits. Those options are independent decisions; enabling everything for every domain increases storage, maintenance, and attack surface.

Add a related domain as a sub-server
A sub-server is appropriate when a second domain belongs to the same owner as an existing top-level virtual server but should retain its own domain identity. For example, one organization might operate a separate project domain while keeping administration and ownership under its main account.
- Open the existing parent virtual server in Virtualmin.
- Choose the control for adding a sub-server.
- Enter the new domain and select the features it actually needs.
- Decide whether the sub-server requires its own website content, SSL certificate, mailboxes, databases, and quotas.
- Confirm the parent-owner relationship, create the sub-server, and then point its DNS records to the VPS.
- Test that the new hostname reaches the intended sub-server rather than the parent site.
A sub-server is not the same as a fully independent customer account. Its ownership and administration remain tied to the parent, so use a top-level server when the second domain must be managed separately.
Add an alias when domains must share one site
Choose an alias when another domain should act exactly like an existing domain. Virtualmin documentation describes an alias as a domain that shares the same website and email addresses as the target. It does not create a second independent document root or an unrelated mail environment.
- Open the target top-level virtual server.
- Choose the option to add a domain alias.
- Enter the alternate domain name.
- Point the alias domain’s DNS records to the same VPS address.
- Include the alias name in the SSL certificate request so HTTPS covers both names.
- Test web requests and mail behavior from both names.
Use an alias for alternate spellings, additional top-level domains, or names intentionally serving the same content. Do not use it when the domain needs separate users, separate mailboxes, independent databases, or its own resource limits.

Enable HTTPS for each domain
Request a Let’s Encrypt certificate during virtual-server creation or from the domain’s SSL controls. The certificate authority must be able to resolve the domain to the VPS and reach the validation endpoint. Correct DNS is therefore a prerequisite, not an optional finishing step.
- Confirm that the domain and every hostname you want covered resolve to the VPS.
- Confirm that the web service is running and reachable over the required HTTP or HTTPS ports.
- Open the domain’s SSL controls in Virtualmin.
- Request a Let’s Encrypt certificate and include the domain’s alternate hostnames, such as
wwwor an alias, when applicable. - Allow Virtualmin to install the certificate and configure the virtual host.
- Open the site over HTTPS and inspect the certificate names, expiration date, and served content.
- Repeat the process for each top-level server, sub-server, and alias that has its own hostname.
Virtualmin’s API includes an option to request a certificate while skipping connectivity checks in situations where that is appropriate. Skipping a check does not make DNS or routing correct; use the option only when you understand why the normal reachability test should be bypassed.
Decide whether each domain needs mail and databases
Virtualmin can manage mail components such as Postfix and Dovecot. Enable mail only for domains that will send or receive mail on this VPS. Mail requires more than creating a mailbox: configure the domain’s MX records, ensure the mail service is reachable, and publish the DNS records required by your mail policy.

For a domain that uses an external mail provider, do not point its MX records at the VPS merely because the website is hosted there. Keep web DNS and mail DNS aligned with the actual service for each domain.
Databases
Virtualmin supports optional MySQL or MariaDB and PostgreSQL features. Enable the database engine and create databases only for applications that need them. Database files consume storage separately from ordinary website files, and database activity can compete with web, mail, and backup workloads for CPU, memory, and disk I/O.
Record database names, users, permissions, and connection details per domain. Avoid granting an application more database access than it needs, and include database dumps in the backup plan.

There is no authoritative universal number of domains that a VPS can host. Official Virtualmin documentation describes configurable limits rather than a fixed domain count. Capacity depends on the workload behind each domain: static pages, dynamic applications, traffic, scheduled jobs, mail volume, database activity, logs, and backups all affect the result.
Use Virtualmin plans or explicit per-domain limits for aliases, sub-servers, mailboxes, databases, and disk quotas. Limits make ownership boundaries predictable and prevent one account from consuming all available storage.
Domain files, email, CGI scripts, and logs are primarily stored under /home. Databases have separate storage considerations, so monitor both the home-directory filesystem and the location used by the database service. Include log growth and retained backups in capacity calculations.
Practical capacity questions
- How much disk space remains after accounting for operating-system updates, logs, mail, databases, and backups?
- Does the VPS have enough memory for the selected web server, database engines, mail services, and the applications running under each account?
- Will several domains create simultaneous CPU or disk-I/O spikes?
- Are quotas and plan limits set before customers or applications are added?
- Do monitoring and alerting cover filesystem usage, service failures, certificate expiration, and backup success?
A small VPS may host many low-traffic static domains, while one busy database-backed application can require more resources than dozens of simple sites. Count domains only as an inventory metric; size the server for workload.

Verify every domain after provisioning
Perform an operational check for each domain instead of assuming that successful creation means the site is ready.

- HTTP routing: Request the domain over HTTP and confirm that the expected document root is served, not another account’s default page.
- HTTPS: Confirm that the certificate covers the exact hostname and that HTTPS serves the same intended site.
- Ownership: Check that uploaded files belong to the correct Unix account and that the application can read and write only the directories it requires.
- Databases: Test application connectivity with the domain’s database credentials and verify that the intended engine is running.
- Mail: If mail is enabled, verify MX records, mailbox delivery, authentication, and the domain’s mail configuration.
- Logs: Confirm that web, mail, and application logs are being written for the correct virtual server and that rotation is enabled.
- Quotas: Confirm that the configured disk and service limits are enforced as intended.
- Backups: Verify that the domain’s files, databases, and mail data are included and that a restore procedure is documented.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The domain shows the wrong website
Check the domain’s A and AAAA records first. A stale address, an unintended IPv6 record, or a missing hostname can send the request elsewhere. If DNS is correct, confirm that the domain was created as the intended top-level server, sub-server, or alias and that the request hostname is included in the virtual-host configuration.
Let’s Encrypt cannot validate the domain
Verify DNS resolution, web reachability, firewall rules, and the exact hostnames included in the request. An alias or www name that was omitted from the certificate request will not be covered simply because the main domain has a certificate.
Mail goes to the wrong service
Inspect MX records and confirm whether the domain is meant to use the VPS or an external mail provider. Website DNS and mail DNS can point to different services; changing an A record does not automatically move mail.
The VPS runs out of storage
Check /home for domain files, mail, CGI content, and logs, then check the separate database storage location. Apply quotas, rotate logs, remove obsolete data, and review backup retention. Do not delete database or mail files manually without a tested recovery plan.
A domain needs independent administration but was created as a sub-server or alias
That account type does not provide the ownership model you need. Plan a controlled migration to a new top-level virtual server, update DNS only after the new site is ready, and preserve mail, SSL, database, and backup data during the move.
Security and maintenance practices
- Keep the operating system, Virtualmin, Webmin, web server, mail components, and database engines patched.
- Use strong, unique credentials and limit administrative access to trusted networks where practical.
- Enable only the services each domain requires.
- Separate customer or application ownership with top-level accounts and quotas.
- Review aliases and sub-servers periodically so abandoned domains do not retain unnecessary services.
- Monitor disk, memory, CPU, database growth, mail queues, logs, and certificate expiration.
- Maintain backups outside the VPS and test restoration for files, databases, and mail.
- Document DNS ownership, account type, enabled services, quotas, and recovery contacts for every domain.
A repeatable operating procedure
For each new domain, follow the same sequence: classify it as a top-level server, sub-server, or alias; create DNS records; provision only the required Virtualmin features; obtain SSL after DNS resolves; configure mail and databases deliberately; apply limits; and complete the operational checklist. Keeping that order prevents most routing and certificate failures because the dependencies are handled before the service that relies on them.
