Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
To host RLCraft Dregora yourself, use the matching Dregora server pack, install Forge 1.12.2, run it with Java 8, accept the EULA, enable command blocks, and forward TCP port 25565 to the computer running the server. The exact Dregora release matters: choose one version on the CurseForge Files tab and have every player use that same version.
What you are setting up
Dregora is built on the RLCraft base for Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. A self-hosted instance consists of a Java server process, Forge and its libraries, the Dregora server-pack files, a world folder, and a network path that lets players reach your computer.
This guide covers the dedicated server. It does not install the client modpack for players, although everyone joining must install the matching client release.
Confirm the version before downloading anything
Why Dregora versions need checking
Available listings are inconsistent. One CurseForge listing identifies Dregora v1.1.2b, dated December 2, 2025, with a matching server pack. Search results for the CurseForge file list also show a Dregora server pack marked v1.0.6b. A guide that mentions version 2.9.3 appears to be referring to the base RLCraft pack rather than Dregora. Do not mix those numbers.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose one release for the whole group
- Open the Dregora project’s current Files tab on CurseForge.
- Note the exact Dregora version your group intends to play.
- Download the server pack for that version, not a different historical file.
- Tell every player to install the same Dregora version on the client side.
Use the current Files tab as the authority when the version shown by an older guide, host, or search result differs. A server and client on different pack versions commonly produce missing-mod, registry, or connection errors.
Requirements and decisions
| Item | What to use | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Game platform | Minecraft Java Edition 1.12.2 | Dregora is based on the RLCraft 1.12.2 Forge pack. |
| Java | Java 8 | RLCraft setup guides warn that newer Java releases can trigger Forge 1.12 startup errors, including InvocationTargetException. Point the start script directly to a Java 8 executable. |
| Forge | Forge 1.12.2, version 14.23.5.2860 or newer as recommended by the RLCraft guide | Install the server build into the folder that will hold the instance. |
| Pack files | Dregora server pack for the selected release | The server pack is different from the client download. |
| Memory | The guide’s example uses 4 GB initial and 6 GB maximum heap | Those values are an example, not a universal requirement. Leave RAM for the operating system and other services. |
| Network | TCP port 25565 by default | You must allow the port through the host firewall and forward it at the router for players outside your home network. |
Prepare a clean server folder
Use a dedicated directory
Create a folder used only by this instance, such as DregoraServer. Avoid putting it inside a cloud-synchronised folder; synchronisation conflicts can corrupt changing world files. Use a path you can easily back up and give your account full read/write access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDownload and read the server pack
Download the server-pack archive corresponding to the version you selected. The project listing explicitly warns:
“Download and use the Server Pack not the Client pack!”
Extract the archive into the server folder. Before starting anything, open the included SERVER README OR DIE.txt file and follow any release-specific instructions. Treat that readme as authoritative for files that must be copied, removed, or configured for that particular release.
Install Java 8 and verify which Java the server will use
Why Java 8 is important
RLCraft’s 1.12.2 Forge environment is documented by setup guides as requiring Java 8. Running the launcher or server with a newer Java can fail during Forge startup with InvocationTargetException. The Dregora-specific Java requirement is not separately documented, so Java 8 is the conservative compatibility choice for this RLCraft-based pack.

Keep multiple Java versions from being mixed
Do not assume that changing Java in your launcher changes Java used by a standalone server. The server script chooses its own executable. Explicitly naming Java 8 in that script prevents a system update from silently switching the instance to an incompatible runtime.
Install Forge 1.12.2 as a server
- Obtain the Forge 1.12.2 installer at version 14.23.5.2860 or a newer 1.12.2 build accepted by the RLCraft guide.
- Run the installer with Java 8.
- Select Install server.
- Choose the empty
DregoraServerfolder as the destination. - Let the installer download Forge libraries and create the server files.
- When the installer creates the versioned Forge jar, rename that jar to
forge.jarso the start script has a stable filename.
Do not rename the libraries directory or delete files created by the installer. Forge 1.12.2 loads its dependencies from that structure.
Merge the Dregora server-pack files
Copy the contents of the extracted Dregora server pack into the same folder that contains forge.jar. If the archive includes a mods folder, configuration files, scripts, or custom libraries, preserve their directory structure. When prompted about existing files, use the instructions in SERVER README OR DIE.txt rather than blindly overwriting everything.
Recommended Free Tools
The server pack supplies server-side files that a client archive may omit or arrange differently. Starting with a client pack is a common cause of missing libraries, incomplete configurations, and a server that appears to launch but cannot accept a matching client.
Launch once, accept the EULA, then configure
Create a first-run script
In the server folder, create a script that invokes Java 8 and Forge. The RLCraft guide’s example allocates 4 GB initially and allows the heap to grow to 6 GB:
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge.jar nogui
On Windows, save it as start.bat. On Linux, save it as start.sh, add execute permission with chmod +x start.sh, and run it from the server directory. For a Java installation that is not the system default, replace java with the complete path to the Java 8 executable, for example:
"C:Program FilesJavajdk1.8.0_XXXbinjava.exe" -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge.jar nogui
Use the actual directory name installed on your machine; XXX is not a literal folder name.

Complete the EULA step
- Run the script once and wait for Forge to stop or report that the EULA has not been accepted.
- Open the generated
eula.txt. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to Mojang’s EULA. - Save the file and run the same script again.
Keep the terminal or console open during the second launch. The first complete start can take substantially longer while Forge builds caches and the pack generates its initial files.
Set the server properties Dregora needs
Enable command blocks
Open server.properties after it is generated and set:
enable-command-block=true
The RLCraft setup guidance recommends this setting so structures and villager spawns generate correctly. Restart the server after editing the file; most properties are read only during startup.
Keep the default port unless you have a reason to change it
The default Minecraft Java server port is:
server-port=25565
Leaving it at 25565 makes connection instructions simpler. If another service already uses that port, choose a different unused TCP port and use the same number in the router, firewall, and player connection address.

Set the server name, difficulty, whitelist, view distance, and operator permissions only after the pack starts reliably. Make one change at a time and retain a copy of the working server.properties so a bad edit can be reversed.
Make the server reachable from the internet
Give the host computer a stable local address
Reserve the server computer’s private IPv4 address in the router’s DHCP settings, or configure a static address according to your operating system. A forwarding rule tied to a changing address will stop working after a reboot or lease renewal.
Create the router forwarding rule
- Sign in to the router’s administration page.
- Open the section labelled Port Forwarding, NAT, or a similar name.
- Create a rule for TCP port
25565(or your chosen replacement port). - Set the destination to the server computer’s reserved private IP address and the same internal port.
- Save or apply the rule, then restart the router only if its interface requires it.
Router menus differ by model, so the labels and screenshots in a generic guide may not match yours. The essential mapping is external TCP port to the server’s private address and listening port.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Allow the port through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the Java server or for TCP 25565. If the operating system prompts whether to allow Java on private and public networks, select the least-broad profile that matches your network. Do not disable the firewall as a shortcut.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Test from outside your home network
Have a player connect using your public IP address and port, or test from a different network such as a mobile hotspot. Testing from the same LAN can succeed even when the router does not support hairpin NAT, so an internal test alone does not prove that internet players can connect.
Give players the correct connection and pack details
- Players on the same home network can usually use the server computer’s private IP address and port.
- Players elsewhere need the host’s public IP address, plus
:25565when the default port is used. - Every player must use the identical Dregora release, Minecraft 1.12.2 base, and Forge-compatible pack files.
- Do not distribute your server’s world folder as a substitute for the client pack.
If you use a whitelist, add each player’s Minecraft username from the server console or the appropriate operator command before asking them to join.
Choose between self-hosting and a hosted instance
| Factor | Self-hosted computer | Hosted server |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No separate server subscription, but you provide hardware, electricity, storage, and an internet connection. | Recurring payment; the provider supplies the machine and network connection. |
| Technical work | You handle Java 8, Forge, the server pack, firewall rules, port forwarding, updates, and backups. | One-click Dregora options can remove most Java, Forge, and router work, but setup and controls vary by provider. |
| Version control | You select the exact Dregora release and can keep it unchanged until you choose to update. | The provider may offer its own pack build or update schedule; verify that it matches the release your players use. |
| Uptime and control | You control files, startup times, performance settings, and maintenance, but the server is limited by your home connection and whether the computer is on. | Datacenter uptime and remote management are convenient, while hardware access and configuration freedom may be limited. |
A hosted option is useful when port forwarding is unavailable or the server must stay online while your home computer is off. Self-hosting is preferable when exact file control and one-time infrastructure ownership matter more than convenience.
Understand Dregora RL before adding anything
Dregora RL is a separate overworld-generator mod designed to work with RLCraft. Its newest listed file is DregoraRL-3.9.2.jar for Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge, dated October 3, 2026. It is not a replacement for the Dregora modpack server files.
Do not add Dregora RL merely because its name resembles the pack name. Install it only when the specific pack or server-pack readme requires it, and use the file version compatible with that release. Adding an extra generator mod to an existing world can change terrain generation and create compatibility problems; make a backup before any such change.

Back up the right files
Stop the server cleanly before copying its files. Back up the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, the mods and config directories, and the server-pack readme. Store at least one copy outside the live server folder.

Update without destroying the working instance
- Record the current Dregora version and Forge build.
- Stop the server and make a complete backup.
- Read the new server pack’s instructions.
- Test the new pack in a separate directory when possible.
- Only migrate the live world after the new instance starts and the player clients have the matching release.
Never overwrite a working installation while the server process is running. Keep the previous folder until the new release has been tested.
Restart cleanly
Use the server console’s stop command rather than closing the window or killing Java. A clean stop flushes world data and reduces the chance of region-file corruption.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
InvocationTargetException during Forge startup
Check the Java path in the start script first. If it resolves to Java 9 or newer, replace it with Java 8 and launch again. Confirm with java -version using the same executable path that the script calls.
The server immediately says the EULA is not accepted
Stop the process, edit the eula.txt in the actual server folder, set eula=true, save it, and restart. Editing an identically named file in a download or backup directory has no effect.
Forge starts but mods are missing
Verify that you used the Dregora server pack, extracted it into the Forge server directory, and followed SERVER README OR DIE.txt. Check that the selected Dregora release and Forge 1.12.2 build match the pack instructions; do not copy arbitrary client-only files into the server.
Players receive a mod-list or registry mismatch
Compare the exact Dregora version, Minecraft version, Forge build, and mod files on the server and every client. The server-pack version shown on an old download page may not be the version currently installed by the group.
Players on the internet cannot connect
- Confirm the server console is listening on the port shown in
server.properties. - Confirm the operating-system firewall allows inbound TCP traffic on that port.
- Confirm the router forwards the external port to the correct private IP address.
- Check that the host’s private IP did not change.
- Test from a genuinely external network, not only from the same LAN.
- Ask the internet provider whether incoming connections are restricted by carrier-grade NAT; if so, a hosted server or a different network arrangement may be necessary.
Structures or villagers do not generate correctly
Open server.properties and confirm enable-command-block=true, then restart. For a newly created world, verify the server-pack instructions before deleting or regenerating anything; deleting a world is irreversible without a backup.
The server is slow or runs out of memory
Start from the documented -Xms4G -Xmx6G example, make sure the host has memory left for the operating system, and watch the console and system-monitor usage while exploring. Do not allocate all physical RAM to Java. Reduce simultaneous heavy exploration or adjust server settings only after confirming that the pack itself is installed correctly.
