Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Host FTB Evolution with the official server installer for the exact release your group will play. The current Feed The Beast listing specifies Java 21, at least 6 GB of RAM and 8 GB recommended. The installer downloads the required server files and Java runtime, so you should not build a server by copying a client instance. Install one release in a dedicated folder, accept the EULA on first launch, test locally, then configure firewall and router access (or use managed hosting) before inviting remote players.
What you need before installing
Prepare the host first so troubleshooting is straightforward. FTB Evolution is published in multiple releases, and the official listing identifies the pack with NeoForge 1.21 tags. Choose one release ID and record it. Every client and the server must use that same release.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Operating system: Use a supported desktop or server operating system and the architecture-specific installer offered in the official FTB Evolution server-files browser.
- Memory: Allocate at least 6 GB of RAM to the server. Feed The Beast recommends 8 GB. The host still needs memory for its operating system and any game client running on the same machine.
- Java: FTB Evolution currently requires Java 21. The installer can download the correct Java runtime automatically; a separate manual Java installation is not required when you use the official installer.
- Storage: Reserve a dedicated folder with enough free space for the generated server files, world data, logs, backups and future updates. The official listing does not state a universal disk-size figure, so monitor the folder rather than relying on a fixed number.
- Network: For friends outside your home, you need permission through the host firewall and a router/NAT rule, unless you choose a managed Minecraft host that handles public network access.
Close other memory-heavy applications during initial setup. If you plan to play on the same computer that runs the server, leave headroom beyond the 8 GB server recommendation for the operating system and client.
Choose and record an exact FTB Evolution release
Use the official release browser
Open the official FTB Evolution versions and server-files page and select the release your players will install. The browser exposes release history and server-file downloads. Do not simply choose “latest” on one computer and an older release on another: write down the release ID and use it everywhere.

Why the release ID matters
Evolution receives multiple releases. A client/server mismatch can produce connection errors even when both installations are called FTB Evolution. During setup, keep a short record containing the release ID, the date you installed it, the host folder, the allocated RAM and who has access. When you update, change the server and every client as one coordinated operation.
Back up before changing releases
Stop the server cleanly and copy the complete server folder, including the world, configuration, scripts and permissions, before an upgrade. Keep at least one untouched pre-upgrade copy. If the new release fails, restore the backup rather than trying to repair a partially upgraded world.

Download and run the official server installer
1. Select the host platform and architecture
In the server-files browser, choose the installer matching the host operating system and CPU architecture. The page provides platform-specific download instructions. Use those instructions instead of downloading a client pack and attempting to convert it.
2. Create a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only for this Evolution server, such as an FTB-Evolution-Server folder in a location you back up regularly. Put the downloaded installer in that folder. A dedicated location keeps world data, logs, configuration and launch scripts together and makes upgrades or migration easier.
3. Make the installer executable when required
On macOS, the official browser shows a curl download followed by chmod +x. Run the exact commands displayed for the selected release, then execute the downloaded installer from the dedicated folder. On platforms with a graphical launcher, start the downloaded installer according to the browser’s instructions.
4. Let the installer fetch the server files and Java
The installer downloads the required files and Java runtime and creates the server launcher or script. Feed The Beast’s server FAQ states: “No, the server installer will download the correct version of Java for you.” This is why installing a random system Java version or copying files from a client instance is unnecessary and can cause version conflicts.

5. Keep the generated files together
After the installer finishes, the folder you selected is the server’s file location. The generated launcher, world, configuration, logs and related files live there unless you deliberately change the working directory. Run the launcher from that folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
Complete the first launch
Start the generated launcher
Run the launcher or script created by the installer. The first run normally creates additional files and stops for the Minecraft EULA. Read the EULA and, only if you agree to it, set the EULA acceptance required by the generated configuration before starting again.
Inspect configuration before inviting players
Open the generated configuration files and review the server settings, access controls and any performance-related options supplied by the pack. Do not delete unfamiliar files simply because they are not present in a client installation. Keep the installer-created structure intact unless a release’s documentation tells you to change a setting.
Confirm a clean startup
Watch the console or log until the server reports that it has finished loading and is ready for connections. If it exits immediately, check the first error in the log, verify that you launched the generated script from the server folder, confirm that the selected release was installed completely and make sure the host has enough free RAM. Do not solve a Java error by copying a client directory over the server.
Install the matching pack on every client
Use the same release, not merely the same pack name
Each player should install FTB Evolution using the same release ID you recorded for the server. A different release can contain different mods, configuration values or NeoForge components. The symptom is often a failed connection, a missing-mod message or a disconnect during loading.
Give players a short checklist
- Open the FTB launcher and locate FTB Evolution.
- Select the exact release ID chosen for the server.
- Let the launcher finish downloading before attempting to connect.
- Close unrelated modded instances so the client has adequate memory.
- Use the server address supplied by the host only after the local test succeeds.
When you update, announce a maintenance window, stop the server, back up the complete folder, install the new server release, and have every player update to the same release before reconnecting.

Set memory deliberately
Start with the published figures
| Setting | Amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum server RAM | 6 GB | Feed The Beast’s current FTB Evolution listing identifies this as the minimum. |
| Recommended server RAM | 8 GB | Use this as the initial target for a normal self-hosted installation, then observe actual usage. |
| Java | Java 21 | The official installer can download the required runtime automatically. |
Leave room for the host
Do not assign all physical memory to the server. The operating system, file cache, monitoring tools and a simultaneous client all need RAM. A computer with only 8 GB total cannot safely dedicate the full amount to the server; use a host with additional memory or move the client to another device.
Monitor before tuning
Begin with the 8 GB recommendation when the host can provide it. Observe memory consumption, log messages and player experience during a realistic session. Increase resources only when monitoring shows a need and the host has headroom. If the host starts swapping, becomes unresponsive or terminates the process, reduce competing workloads or move the server to a larger machine rather than blindly increasing the allocation.
Test on the local network first
Connect from the host
With the server fully started, connect from the same machine using the local address presented by your Minecraft setup. This verifies that the launcher, Java runtime, world and pack are working before network routing is involved.
Connect from another device on the same LAN
Have a second computer on the same home or office network join using the host’s private network address. Keep the server running and watch its console while the client connects. If this fails, fix the local installation or host firewall before changing router settings.
- Confirm both machines are on the same network rather than an isolated guest network.
- Check that the host firewall allows the server process or its listening port on the private network.
- Verify the client release ID exactly matches the server.
- Read the server log and client error together; a missing or mismatched mod is different from a blocked network connection.
Let friends join from outside your network
Allow the server through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the server application or configured game port, limited to the networks and devices you intend to use. The exact screens and rule syntax vary by operating system. Apply the rule, restart the server if required, and repeat the LAN test.
Configure router/NAT forwarding
For a home-hosted server, forward the configured game port from the router to the host’s private IP address. Reserve the host’s private address in the router or operating system so the forwarding target does not change. The router’s public address is the address remote players use; the private address is only for devices inside your LAN.

Router interfaces differ, and the official FTB pages do not prescribe one universal port number or menu path. Use the port shown in your generated server configuration and your router’s current forwarding interface. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary forwarding may not work; a managed host or another network design is then more practical.
Share only the information players need
Give friends the public connection address and the exact FTB Evolution release ID. Do not publish your router administration credentials, host operating-system account or backup files. Remove forwarding and firewall rules if you stop hosting publicly.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files and upgrades, while managed hosting trades some control for simpler network access and operations. Feed The Beast’s pages establish the Evolution requirements but do not endorse a particular commercial provider. Confirm support for Java 21, at least 8 GB of RAM, the specific Evolution release and backups before paying for a managed service.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed FTB hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | No hosting subscription is established by the official pages; you provide the hardware and internet connection. | Provider pricing varies and is not stated here. Check the current plan and renewal price. |
| RAM and CPU | You must supply at least 6 GB, with 8 GB recommended, plus operating-system headroom. | Choose a plan that explicitly provides at least the recommended 8 GB and adequate CPU capacity. |
| Java and installer support | Run the official installer; it can download Java 21 automatically. | Verify that the control panel supports the official FTB installer or the exact Evolution server files and Java 21. |
| Backups and restore | You design the backup schedule and test restores yourself. | Check backup frequency, retention, download access and one-click restore behavior. |
| Network accessibility | You configure firewall rules, router/NAT forwarding and a stable host address. | The provider normally supplies a public endpoint; confirm what is included and whether protection against abuse is available. |
| Player capacity | Capacity depends on your hardware, memory headroom, network and configuration; no universal player count is stated. | Ask for the provider’s limits and whether CPU, memory or network usage is shared. |
| Monitoring | You inspect logs and system resource usage. | Check whether console access, alerts and resource graphs are included. |
| Upgrades | You stop the server, back up, update server and clients together, then test. | Confirm who performs upgrades, whether you can choose a release ID and how rollback works. |
Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable maintaining a machine and router. Choose managed hosting when reliable public access, backups and hands-off maintenance matter more than controlling the underlying system.

Make backups useful
- Stop the server cleanly before copying the world and configuration.
- Keep a dated copy outside the live server folder so a failed upgrade cannot overwrite it.
- Retain at least one older known-good release and its matching backup.
- Periodically test restoring a copy to a separate folder; an untested backup is not a recovery plan.
Update in a controlled sequence
- Announce downtime and record the current release ID.
- Stop the server and make a complete backup.
- Install the chosen new server release with the official installer.
- Start it once without players and inspect logs and generated configuration.
- Have every player install the identical client release.
- Run a local connection test, then reopen remote access.
Because the release list changes, recheck the official browser immediately before an upgrade and select a stable release deliberately rather than assuming the newest entry is compatible with your existing world.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The installer will not run
Confirm that you downloaded the installer for the host’s operating system and architecture, placed it in the intended folder and applied the executable permission shown by the official instructions on macOS. Re-download the installer if it was interrupted. Do not substitute files from a client instance.

The server stops during startup
Read the first meaningful error in the server log. Check that the generated launcher is being run from its own folder, that the required files finished downloading and that the host can provide the assigned memory. If Java is reported missing, rerun the official installer or launcher so it can obtain Java 21.
A player receives a mod or version mismatch
Compare the client’s release ID with the server’s recorded ID. Have the player select the exact release, allow all downloads to complete and reconnect. Updating only the client or only the server leaves the pair incompatible.
Local players can connect but remote friends cannot
The pack is probably working, so focus on networking: verify the host firewall rule, confirm the router forwards the configured port to the correct private address, check that the address has not changed, and determine whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. A managed host avoids the home-router portion of this process.
The host becomes slow or runs out of memory
Check actual memory use and leave room for the operating system. Stop competing applications, move the client to another machine, or use a host with more capacity. The published 6 GB minimum is not a promise that every hardware configuration or player load will run comfortably; 8 GB is the official starting recommendation.
Launch checklist
- One FTB Evolution release ID is written down for the server and all players.
- The official server installer, not a copied client instance, created the server files.
- Java 21 is available through the installer’s downloaded runtime.
- The host can provide at least 6 GB, with 8 GB recommended and additional system headroom.
- The EULA was accepted through the generated first-run configuration.
- The server starts cleanly and its logs show it is ready.
- A host-local connection and a second-device LAN connection both succeed.
- The firewall and, for remote players, router/NAT forwarding are configured.
- A dated backup exists before the first public session and before every release change.
- Players have the exact matching client release and the correct connection address.
Where the FTB Evolution server files are
The server files are in the dedicated folder where you placed and ran the official installer. That folder contains the generated launcher or script, world data, configuration, logs and other files downloaded for the selected release. If you cannot find them, locate the folder you chose for the installer and confirm that the launcher was started from there; searching for a client instance can lead you to the wrong files.
