To host a server for the original PC version of Assetto Corsa in 2026, first choose the software that matches your session: the original dedicated server for races and qualifying, AssettoServer for practice-focused freeroam with traffic or weather, or a managed rental when you do not want to administer a machine. Install the server and the exact car-and-track content, configure its files, then allow the configured ports through the host firewall and router. Test from outside your home network before inviting drivers.
These instructions apply to the original Assetto Corsa. Assetto Corsa Competizione and Assetto Corsa EVO use different dedicated-server tools and network settings, so their guides are not interchangeable.
Choose the right server implementation
The event you want to run determines the correct server software. Choosing by features alone can leave you with a server that cannot deliver the session type your league needs.

| AssettoServer | Freeroam practice, AI traffic and supported dynamic-weather features | Its documentation says, “Race/Quali sessions and lap times are not supported yet.” It is not a general replacement for a race server. | Community software with configuration assembled through Content Manager and YAML files |
| Managed rental | Players who want a provider to provision the machine and expose a control panel | Recurring commercial terms, provider-specific limits and less control over the underlying host | Web panel, file manager and provider support rather than your own server administration |
AssettoServer’s supported use case is described in its project introduction. Read that limitation before building a league around it.

Requirements and decisions before installation
Confirm the game edition
Use the original PC Assetto Corsa files and dedicated-server software. Do not copy ports, presets or server binaries from Competizione or EVO. The three games are separate products with separate server tools.
Choose where the server will run
- Home machine: You control the files and hardware, but must maintain the operating system, firewall, router forwarding, backups and uptime. Your internet connection also becomes part of the server’s reliability.
- Linux VPS or physical Linux host: A practical choice for administrators comfortable with SSH and service management. The community Linux guide cited below is useful operational documentation, but its App ID and ownership instructions are community guidance rather than an official Valve or Kunos confirmation.
- Windows desktop or server: Convenient when your group already uses Content Manager and Windows-based tools. Keep the machine awake and prevent updates or sleep from interrupting events.
- Managed rental: The provider provisions the instance and usually supplies a panel. You still need to select content, session rules and ports, and you remain responsible for giving players compatible files.
Collect the content first
Make a list of every car and track the server will load, including exact mod versions and folder names. The server download does not necessarily include the cars and tracks. Drivers need the same content; mismatches can cause checksum errors or prevent a join.
For community mods, provide lawful download instructions from the mod author or other authorized source. Do not assume that a car with the same display name is the same build: the internal folder and checksum matter.

Install the original dedicated server on Linux
A community-maintained Linux setup guide describes the following workflow. Commands and package names can vary by distribution, so check your distribution’s current SteamCMD requirements and run the server under a dedicated, non-root account where possible.
1. Install SteamCMD and dependencies
Install SteamCMD and the 32-bit libraries required by your distribution. Create a directory owned by the account that will run the service. Avoid placing live server files in a personal desktop folder that may be removed during maintenance.
2. Authenticate with an account that owns the game
The guide identifies App ID 302550 for the dedicated server and says the Steam account should own original Assetto Corsa, App ID 244210. Treat those values as community instructions: verify that SteamCMD accepts the account and App IDs in your environment before automating deployment.

3. Download and validate the server
Install App ID 302550 into the directory you selected, then validate the files with SteamCMD. Keep the SteamCMD output: missing depots, authentication failures and permission errors are easier to diagnose from the first installation log than after several partial retries.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →4. Populate cars and tracks
Place the required content beneath the server’s content/ directory, preserving the expected cars/ and tracks/ structure and each mod’s exact folder name. The cited guide notes that the server download does not contain cars or tracks by default.
5. Configure the server
Edit cfg/server_cfg.ini for the server’s name, session sequence, ports, passwords, weather and other rules. Use cfg/entry_list.ini to define the car slots, including each slot’s chosen car and any team or driver restrictions. Start with a small entry list while testing, then expand it after clients can join reliably.
6. Open only the configured network paths
Read the port values from your actual configuration. Allow those values in the Linux host firewall and forward them from the router to the server’s fixed internal address. Do not blindly apply a port number from another tutorial if your configuration uses a different value.
7. Start, observe and test
Launch the server in a persistent terminal session or service manager so it survives an SSH disconnect. Watch the console for content-loading errors, bind failures and session transitions. Join locally first, then test from a separate internet connection.
Updating without losing your setup
The Linux guide provides a SteamCMD update procedure and says its described process preserves cfg/ and content/. Back up both directories before every update anyway. Record the server build, mod versions and configuration in a dated backup so you can roll back if a new file or mod changes checksums.

Set up AssettoServer on Windows or Linux
AssettoServer is aimed at practice-oriented freeroam. Its Beginner’s Guide documents Windows and Linux packages, with a Windows walkthrough that uses Content Manager.
1. Build a working preset in Content Manager
Install the cars and track you intend to use in the client installation first. In Content Manager, create a server preset containing the track, cars, slots, session settings and passwords. Use the project’s Pack feature to bundle the configuration and data needed by the dedicated server.
2. Extract the server into a dedicated folder
Unpack the AssettoServer release into a folder separate from your normal game installation. Copy the packed configuration and content into that folder, keeping the directory layout generated by Content Manager. A clean folder makes upgrades, backups and permission checks simpler.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
3. Start the executable and answer firewall prompts
Launch the server executable once from the dedicated folder. If Windows Defender Firewall asks whether to allow network access, permit the executable on the networks you actually use. If you later change the executable location, Windows may create a new firewall rule rather than applying the old one.
4. Review the generated configuration
AssettoServer creates extra_cfg.yml on first startup if it is absent. Use that file for advanced options documented by the project. Keep a copy of the generated files before making extensive edits, and change one option at a time so a startup failure has an obvious cause.
5. Confirm the server-list and invite behavior
The beginner walkthrough includes a LAN-list check and an external-join check. A Content Manager Invite button can copy a private LAN address that outsiders cannot route to. For internet players, use the invite link generated in the server console, then verify it from a phone hotspot or another external network.

Make client content and versions match
Every participant must have the server’s cars and track, with compatible files and versions. Publish a single mod manifest for the event that includes the download source, version, internal folder name and any required dependencies. Ask drivers to remove duplicate or older copies when a checksum error identifies a mismatch.
AssettoServer client thresholds
For Steam authentication, AssettoServer documentation specifies Content Shaders Patch (CSP) 0.1.75 or later and Content Manager v0.8.2297.38573 or later for clients. Its dynamic-weather support uses CSP WeatherFX v1 and requires CSP 0.1.76 or later. These are project-documented minimums, not a promise that every later combination is compatible; check the project’s current release notes before a public event.
Preventing checksum and loading failures
- Compare the complete car and track folder names, not only their visible names in the launcher.
- Distribute the same version to the server and every driver; do not update a mod halfway through an event.
- Check that required CSP or other dependencies are installed on each client when a mod needs them.
- Remove broken duplicate folders from a client’s content directory and reinstall the authorized package.
- Test the full grid with the largest planned car count before race night.
Configure ports, firewall and router forwarding
For the documented AssettoServer beginner setup, forward TCP and UDP 9600 and TCP 8081. These are defaults for that walkthrough, not universal Assetto Corsa values. If your server configuration uses different ports, open and forward those configured values instead.
Host firewall
- Assign the server machine a stable internal address, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create inbound rules for the server executable or the exact configured TCP and UDP ports.
- Restrict the rule to the intended network profiles and source ranges when your group’s topology allows it.
- Restart the server after changing rules and confirm that it is listening on the expected ports.
Router forwarding
- Open the router’s port-forwarding or virtual-server page.
- Enter one rule for TCP 9600 and one for UDP 9600, plus TCP 8081 for the documented AssettoServer defaults.
- Set the destination to the server’s reserved internal address, not a changing DHCP address.
- Save the rules and check whether the router reports a conflict with another device or service.
A forwarding rule that points to the wrong internal address is indistinguishable from a blocked port to an outside player. Test from a different network rather than relying on a same-machine or LAN connection.
Verify the server before inviting players
- Local startup: Confirm that the process starts without a bind, permission or missing-content error.
- LAN join: Join from another device on the same network and load the selected car and track.
- External join: Use a phone hotspot, work connection or trusted remote player. Do not treat a successful LAN join as proof that internet forwarding works.
- Session transition: For the original dedicated server, move through practice, qualifying and race as configured. For AssettoServer, test the intended freeroam and traffic behavior rather than expecting race timing.
- Content integrity: Have a second player verify the same car, track and mod versions and record any checksum message verbatim.
- Load observation: Watch CPU, memory, network usage and console logs while several clients connect. No representative hardware benchmark is established here, so size the machine from your own test rather than a generic player-count claim.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
| Symptom | Likely check | Scope of the diagnosis |
|---|---|---|
| Remote players cannot connect, while local players can | Confirm UDP 9600 is allowed by the host firewall and forwarded to the correct internal address; also check the configured port rather than assuming the default. | The AssettoServer beginner guide specifically identifies blocked UDP 9600 as a cause in its documented setup. |
| Server appears stopped in a management panel | Compare HTTP_PORT in the server configuration with the panel’s .env value. |
This check comes from the cited Linux panel guide and is not a universal diagnosis for every panel. |
| Players receive a checksum error | Compare server and client car/track versions, internal folder names and dependencies. Replace stale or duplicate client content. | Content mismatch is a general compatibility failure described by the hosting documentation. |
| Invite link works for the host but not outsiders | Do not use a copied LAN IP. Generate the external invite link in the AssettoServer console and test it off-LAN. | This behavior is called out in the AssettoServer beginner walkthrough. |
| Server starts but a session will not provide expected race data | Check which implementation is running. AssettoServer does not support race/qualifying sessions or lap times according to its project documentation. | Switch to the original dedicated server for organized race sessions. |
Operate the server safely after launch
Back up the parts that define your event
Back up cfg/, content/, AssettoServer’s YAML files, entry lists, passwords and any custom scripts. Keep at least one copy outside the live machine. Label backups with the server version and mod manifest so you can restore a known-good event.
Separate updates from event preparation
Update the server and mods in a staging copy first. Start it with the same configuration, join with a test client and verify checksums before replacing the live files. Schedule updates well before a league session, not immediately before drivers connect.

Limit exposure
Use a dedicated operating-system account, strong administration credentials and only the ports the server actually needs. Keep the operating system, SteamCMD and server package current, and review firewall rules after moving the installation or changing routers. Never publish an administrative panel to the internet unless its documentation explicitly requires it and you have secured it.
Document a recovery path
Write down the server directory, start command or service definition, configured ports, router destination address, content manifest and backup location. A second administrator should be able to restore the server without guessing which mod build or configuration was active.
When managed hosting is the better choice
A managed rental can remove the machine, operating-system and router work. A provider guide published June 20, 2026 and marked as checked September 25, 2026 describes a panel for status, connection details, configuration and file changes. Those capabilities are provider claims; confirm the current plan, limits, support response and cancellation terms before paying.
If you want a rental that skips the router work, Godlike.Host’s Assetto Corsa server hosting runs from its own Pterodactyl-based game panel with a config editor, SFTP/FTP file access, up to three free backups a day and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket; see the current plans before you choose.
Typical managed-hosting workflow
- Choose an original Assetto Corsa server product and a region close to most players.
- Set the player capacity, session sequence, realism rules and password in the provider panel.
- Upload the cars, tracks and configuration files, or use the panel’s supported installer.
- Review the assigned ports and connection details; a rental normally removes the need for home-router forwarding, but not the need to configure the server correctly.
- Join with a test client, verify content checksums and send players the provider’s connection address or invite link.
- Export or back up configuration and content before changing plans or cancelling service.
Compare self-hosting and renting on the decisions that affect play
| Decision | Home or self-managed host | Managed rental |
|---|---|---|
| Session mode | Choose and configure the original dedicated server or AssettoServer yourself. | Confirm that the provider supports the implementation and session type you need. |
| Control | Shell, desktop and direct file access. | Panel and file manager; underlying access may be restricted. |
| Networking | You maintain firewall rules, router forwarding and a stable internal address. | The provider exposes the service; you configure the application’s ports and access settings. |
| Content | You download, validate and back up every car and track. | You still need client-compatible content, while upload tools and storage limits depend on the provider. |
| Operations | You handle updates, uptime, monitoring and recovery. | The provider maintains infrastructure, but you should verify its backup, restart and support policies. |
| Cost | Up-front hardware and internet costs plus your administration time. | Recurring rental charges and any setup, storage or extra-slot fees. The available sources do not provide comparable prices, so obtain current quotes. |
A practical decision guide
- Running league races with qualifying, lap times and race control? Start with the original dedicated server.
- Hosting a relaxed open world with AI traffic or dynamic weather? Evaluate AssettoServer, while accepting its practice-only session limitation.
- Do not want to expose a home router or maintain Linux/Windows? Compare managed rentals and read their current terms, backups and support commitments.
- Unsure which path to choose? Build a small test server with one track and a few cars first. Confirm the session behavior and external connectivity before purchasing hardware, a rental plan or additional content.
The most reliable 2026 setup is the one that matches the event rather than the one with the longest feature list: use the original dedicated server for structured racing, AssettoServer for its documented freeroam strengths, and managed hosting when administration and network exposure are the constraints.
