For a persistent ARK: Survival Ascended world, use either a Windows-based dedicated server that you administer yourself or a managed game-server service. Self-hosting gives you control but makes you responsible for installation, updates, networking, backups and recovery. Managed hosting is simpler because the provider supplies a control panel and service tools, but map limits, platform support and other terms are provider-specific.
This guide separates confirmed game requirements from server-sizing assumptions, explains both hosting routes, shows how to change common settings safely, and identifies the details—especially current commands and firewall ports—that must be checked in current technical documentation before you expose a server to the internet.

What a dedicated ARK server changes
A dedicated server runs the game world as its own process instead of tying the session to one player’s console or PC. Friends can return to the same persistent world while the server is online, even when the usual host is not playing. That removes the practical host-boundary problem of a non-dedicated session and gives a community one address and rule set to use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You still need to decide who operates the machine, which player platforms must connect, what map and slot count you need, and how worlds will be backed up. A server is an ongoing service rather than a one-time installation: updates, configuration changes, restarts and storage management all affect whether players can connect.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
| Decision area | Windows self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Control | You control the operating system, files, update timing and network setup. | The provider supplies a panel and server-side controls; the provider controls much of the underlying service. |
| Administration | You install and update the dedicated files, maintain the machine, configure access and make backups. | The service includes provider tools for configuration, backups/restores and restarts, subject to its current terms. |
| Platforms | You must verify that your chosen server build and configuration accept the client platforms you want. | Nitrado lists Steam PC, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5 and Windows (Microsoft Store) support for ARK: Survival Ascended. |
| Customization | Direct file and operating-system access allows extensive control, but every change is your responsibility. | Nitrado documents gameplay multipliers, passwords, PvE settings, player-management lists, mods and custom maps through its service tools. |
| Cost and reliability | Your cost includes a suitable always-on computer, electricity, storage and your time. This guide does not establish a price or uptime comparison. | You pay the provider under its current offer. Prices, capacity and uptime are not established here and should be checked before purchase. |
Choose self-hosting when you already have a Windows machine, want operating-system-level control and are comfortable maintaining it. Choose managed hosting when you want a persistent world without administering a server computer, or when your players use several console and PC platforms that the provider explicitly supports.
What self-hosting requires
Use a Windows-based, 64-bit environment
The ARK Official Community Wiki’s dedicated-server reference describes a 64-bit dedicated executable and Windows or a Windows-like environment. It says Linux is not natively supported. Those statements come from a community-maintained page whose detailed content was not available for direct inspection, so verify the current game terms and server documentation before committing to an operating system or compatibility layer.
Do not assume that a Linux virtual machine, container or compatibility layer is supported merely because it can run other Steam software. If you need a supported Linux-native deployment, the cited material does not establish one.
Interpret the published PC figures correctly
Steam’s ARK: Survival Ascended PC listing, accessed in 2026, specifies 16 GB of RAM minimum, 32 GB recommended, 180 GB of available storage and an SSD. Those are the published PC game requirements. They are useful when a computer will also run the game, but they are not a confirmed dedicated-server sizing guide. A server-only process, multiple worlds, mods, operating-system overhead and concurrent players can change actual resource needs.
- Treat 16 GB RAM as a game-PC minimum, not a promise that a busy dedicated server will run well.
- Treat 32 GB RAM as Steam’s recommended game-PC figure, not a guaranteed server target.
- Reserve more storage than the listed 180 GB if you will keep backups, logs, updates or several maps; the source does not establish a dedicated-server capacity number.
- Use an SSD because Steam lists one for the PC game, while recognizing that this does not quantify server performance.
Check the licensing position before operating publicly
The community-wiki setup reference describes personal, non-commercial hosting unless a dedicated-server license is obtained from Nitrado. Because that statement comes from a community-maintained source and the page could not be opened for direct verification, treat it as a warning rather than legal advice. Read the current ARK and hosting terms before charging players, selling access, accepting donations tied to access, or presenting a server as a commercial service.
Self-hosting workflow
The broad sequence below is safe to plan from the available evidence. Exact SteamCMD commands, launch arguments, account requirements and firewall port numbers are deliberately not reproduced: they were not verified in the current material and can change between server releases.
- Choose the machine and location. Select a Windows-based, 64-bit computer that can remain powered on for the hours your community expects. If it also runs the game client, compare its hardware with Steam’s 16 GB minimum, 32 GB recommendation, 180 GB SSD and 180 GB storage figures, while remembering that these are client requirements.
- Install the current dedicated-server files. Obtain the server package and installation instructions from current ARK/Steam server documentation. Confirm that the files match the current Survival Ascended release and your intended client platforms.
- Create a separate service account or Windows profile. Keeping the server files and save data separate from personal game files makes permissions, updates and backups easier to manage. Use an account with only the access needed to run and update the service.
- Define a save and backup location. Put world saves, configuration files and backups on storage that will survive a client update. Keep at least one backup away from the live save directory so a corruption or mistaken deletion does not remove every copy.
- Set the initial configuration. Decide the map, server name, passwords, PvE or PvP mode, difficulty and gameplay multipliers before inviting players. Make one change at a time and record the old value.
- Configure network access using current documentation. The server must be reachable from the clients you intend to support. Consult the current official server guide for the required launch arguments, listening and query ports, Windows Firewall rules and router forwarding. Do not copy a port list from an old tutorial.
- Start privately and test. Connect from the host machine or a test client, verify that the selected map loads, and check that an administrator can use the intended controls. Test from outside the host’s local network if remote friends will connect.
- Document recovery. Write down the server file location, save location, configuration changes, update procedure and restore procedure. A second administrator should be able to restart the service without guessing.
When managed hosting is the better route
A managed service removes much of the operating-system work. Nitrado’s ARK: Survival Ascended information describes a provider panel, configurable gameplay settings, player-management controls, mod and custom-map support, backups and restores, and automatic or scheduled restarts. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent performance or uptime assessment.
Nitrado is not the only managed option: Godlike.Host offers ARK: Survival Ascended server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based panel, a task scheduler, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket. See the current plans, and confirm its platform and map terms before ordering.
Confirm platform coverage
Nitrado lists Steam PC, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5 and Windows (Microsoft Store) for ARK: Survival Ascended hosting. Before ordering, confirm that the exact service type and configuration permit the client-platform combination your group uses. A platform appearing on a product page does not by itself prove that every mod, map or cross-platform combination works together.
Check the map’s slot rule before buying
Nitrado’s current product information says that services purchased after 22 June 2026 at 2 PM CEST require at least 26 slots when running Astraeos or Lost Colony. Other maps are supported from 20 slots under that provider’s stated rule. A new service below the applicable minimum will not start with one of those high-consumption maps selected until you change the map or increase the slot count.
| Map selection | Minimum slots stated by Nitrado | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Astraeos | 26 | Applies to services purchased after 22 June 2026, 2 PM CEST, according to the provider’s page. |
| Lost Colony | 26 | Same purchase-date condition and provider-specific rule. |
| Other maps | 20 | Provider states support from 20 slots; verify the live offer before purchase. |
This is a provider rule, not a universal ARK requirement. Offers can change, so check the live service page at the time you order.

Configure a managed server safely
Use the panel or the two configuration files
Nitrado’s configuration guide says common settings can be changed in its control panel or by editing GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini in the server file browser. The guide was published on 25 October 2023; labels and navigation may have changed since then.
- Stop the server before editing files or use the panel’s documented maintenance workflow.
- Open the server settings area, or open the file browser and select the relevant
.inifile. - Change only the setting you intend to change. Preserve the existing syntax and keep a copy of the previous value.
- Save the panel form or file, then restart the server. The guide says changes take effect after a restart.
- Join as an administrator or test player and verify the result in the game.
- Record the change, date and previous value so you can reverse it if the server fails to start or the setting reverts.
Settings you can plan before opening the server
- Access control: set a server password and an administrator password separately. Share administrative credentials only with trusted operators.
- Game mode: choose PvE or another mode supported by the current panel and verify the result after restarting.
- Difficulty and progression: adjust difficulty and experience multipliers deliberately; write down the values so every administrator uses the same rules.
- Resource and creature rates: configure taming and harvesting multipliers to match the community’s expected pace.
- Breeding: tune breeding-related multipliers as a group and test a small, reversible change before applying a large one.
- Player management: maintain whitelist, ban and administrator lists where the service exposes them. Keep an offline copy of those lists.
- Mods and custom maps: add one item at a time, confirm client compatibility, and allow extra restart and download time after a change.
Respect supported value ranges
Nitrado’s guide warns that values outside supported bounds can prevent startup or cause a value to revert. If the server does not start after an edit, restore the last known-good value rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Keep a change log so you know exactly which edit to undo.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Network access without guessing ports
Remote players need a reachable server endpoint, but the supplied material does not verify current ARK: Survival Ascended port numbers, launch flags or crossplay switches. Those details are version-sensitive and should come from the current official server documentation or the managed provider’s current instructions.
- Allow only the documented server traffic through Windows Firewall and the router.
- Do not expose administrative interfaces or remote-desktop services to the public internet unnecessarily.
- Test local connectivity first, then test from a different network.
- If a managed panel supplies a connection address, use that address rather than inventing a direct-IP format.
- When a platform cannot connect, verify platform support, map compatibility, password settings and the provider’s current cross-platform guidance before changing firewall rules.
Backups, updates and routine operation
Back up before every risky change
Back up the world and configuration before changing maps, installing a mod, editing multipliers or applying an update. Keep more than one generation when storage permits. A backup that remains in the same live directory is not sufficient protection against accidental deletion or a failed update.

Plan restarts and maintenance windows
Managed hosting may provide automatic or scheduled restarts; self-hosting requires you to create and monitor your own schedule. Tell players when maintenance occurs, stop the server cleanly, confirm that the save completed, and then update or edit files. Avoid changing several variables during one restart because you will not know which change caused a problem.
Keep a small operations record
Record the ARK version, map, slot count, installed mods, configuration edits, backup dates and administrator list. This turns troubleshooting from guesswork into a reproducible process and makes it easier for another operator to take over.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server will not start
- Restore the last known-good
GameUserSettings.iniorGame.iniafter an out-of-range value. - Check whether the selected map violates a managed provider’s slot minimum; Astraeos and Lost Colony have the 26-slot rule described above for qualifying new services.
- Confirm that the server files and map are from the same current release.
- Review the service log or Windows event information for the first error, not only the final shutdown message.
A setting keeps reverting
Recheck the spelling, section and supported range in the current provider documentation. Some settings are controlled by the panel and can overwrite a manual file edit. Make the change in the documented interface, save it, restart, and verify the resulting file.
Players cannot connect
First test from the host or local network, then from an external network. Confirm that the server is running, the address is current, the password is correct and the chosen client platform is supported. Only after those checks should you revisit the current firewall and router instructions; do not rely on a port list copied from an older guide.

Check whether the machine is also running the full game client, whether storage is nearing capacity, and whether a recent mod or configuration change coincides with the problem. The published Steam figures do not provide a server performance guarantee, so use measured resource usage and provider diagnostics rather than treating 16 GB or 32 GB as universal server limits.
A practical 2026 launch checklist
- Choose Windows self-hosting or managed hosting based on who will handle updates, networking and recovery.
- For self-hosting, verify a current 64-bit Windows-compatible server path and read the current licensing terms.
- Use Steam’s 16 GB minimum, 32 GB recommended RAM, 180 GB SSD and 180 GB storage figures only as PC-game context, not dedicated-server guarantees.
- For managed hosting, confirm supported client platforms, map availability, current slot rules and the provider’s backup policy.
- Check the 26-slot requirement for Astraeos and Lost Colony on qualifying Nitrado services purchased after 22 June 2026 at 2 PM CEST; other maps are stated as available from 20 slots.
- Set passwords, mode, difficulty, experience, taming, harvesting and breeding values before inviting players.
- Back up saves and configuration, record every edit, and restart after documented changes.
- Verify current commands, launch arguments, crossplay options and firewall ports from up-to-date technical documentation before publishing the server address.
Bottom line: Self-hosting is viable when you can maintain a Windows-based machine and accept responsibility for the full operating stack. Managed hosting is the lower-maintenance choice when its platform, map and slot terms fit your group. In either case, careful backups, reversible configuration changes and current network documentation matter more than copying an old command-line tutorial.
