To host an alt:V server in 2026, choose a Windows or Linux machine, install the prerequisites for your scripting module, download the current server build, extract it, start the server executable, configure server.toml, add your resources, and expose the configured port to the Internet. This guide follows the JavaScript setup path documented by alt:V; the platform also supports C# through its corresponding module.
Hosting the server and running the alt:V client are separate questions. A Linux machine can run the native server build, while the official FAQ does not provide official Linux support for the client itself. Your players therefore need a supported client platform even when your server is on Linux.
What you need before you start
The official JavaScript setup walkthrough lists the following prerequisites:
Recommended Free Tools
- Windows 10 or newer, or Linux, for the server machine.
- The latest Node.js release for the JavaScript module.
- A code editor and basic command-prompt knowledge.
- The latest Visual C++ Redistributable on Windows.
libatomic1on Linux.
This article uses the JavaScript module because that is the module covered by the linked setup walkthrough. alt:V also documents a C# module. If you choose C#, select csharp-module when downloading the server and verify the requirements of each C# resource before adding it.

- Hard Drive: 8TB (4 x 2TB) 7.2K RPM 6Gb/s SATA 3.5 Inch HDDs in RAID
Install the Linux library
On a Debian- or Ubuntu-based Linux system, the setup page gives this command:
apt-get install libatomic1
Use the package manager and permissions appropriate to your distribution. The server download contains the Linux binaries and its own launch instructions; do not substitute a Windows executable or assume that a Windows command applies to Linux.
Keep the client/server distinction clear
The official FAQ at alt:V’s FAQ says native Linux server builds exist, but the alt:V client has no official Linux support. Some users have tried Wine or Proton, but the documentation gives no stability guarantee comparable with native Windows. A Linux-hosted server can still serve players using officially supported client platforms.

There is no universally correct provider or plan. Decide whether you want an always-on rented machine or hardware you operate yourself, then check the same technical requirements in either case.
| Decision factor | Rented VPS or dedicated host | Self-hosted machine |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Designed for continuous operation in a data centre, subject to the host’s service terms. | Depends on your electricity, hardware, Internet connection and ability to maintain the machine. |
| Management effort | You administer the operating system and alt:V files, while the host supplies the physical or virtual platform. | You administer the operating system, hardware, network equipment and alt:V files. |
| CPU and memory | Select a configuration with enough clock speed, cores and memory headroom for your scripts and database. | Choose or upgrade hardware to meet the same workload; published slot numbers are not a guarantee. |
| Storage | Confirm space and performance for the server files, resources, database and logs. | Provide reliable storage with room for the database, scripts, logs and backups. |
| Public reachability | Check that the provider permits the configured service port and lets you set firewall or security-group rules. | Configure the host firewall and, if applicable, router forwarding and upstream ISP restrictions. |
| Player latency | Pick a region near the majority of your players. | Your physical location and network route determine latency unless you place the machine elsewhere. |
| Cost | A recurring rental charge; the correct price depends on the selected resources and region. | Up-front hardware and continuing electricity, bandwidth and maintenance costs. |
For a public community that must remain online while your personal computer is off, a rented VPS or dedicated server is usually the simpler operational route. Self-hosting is practical when you already control suitable hardware and a reachable connection. Compare CPU performance, memory headroom, storage, operating-system support, network access and region before comparing price. Do not buy a plan solely because its advertised player number resembles your target; the gamemode, resources, database and concurrent activity determine the real load.
Size the machine without treating estimates as guarantees
The official server-specifications page gives orientation rather than a capacity promise. Its figures are undated vendor guidance accessed in 2026, and the page says requirements can change with future features or performance changes.

| Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| CPU utilization: 6–42% | A stated average range for a mid-tier server, dependent on players and other factors; it is not a benchmark for every resource pack. |
| Peak-hour players: approximately 300–600 | A stated mid-tier average, not a guaranteed slot count or a recommendation for an untested configuration. |
| RAM: less than 1.25 GB | A stated mid-tier server figure; databases, scripts and operating-system overhead require additional memory. |
| Around 8 cores | A stated mid-tier orientation figure, not a rule that every server needs exactly eight cores. |
| 3.7 GHz | A stated mid-tier clock-speed figure; architecture and workload still matter. |
For a performant server above 100 players, the same page suggests assuming at least a 3.2 GHz CPU, four cores and 4 GB of RAM, with additional memory for databases and similar workloads. Disk space depends on the database and scripts. The word minimum matters: these values do not certify that a particular gamemode will sustain 100 players, and they do not account for every operating-system or background-service requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA practical capacity method
- Start with the workload you actually intend to run: framework, maps, scripts, database, voice or other integrations and expected concurrent players.
- Reserve memory for the operating system, database and monitoring instead of assigning all installed RAM to alt:V.
- Prefer strong per-core CPU performance as well as enough cores; a script-heavy server can behave differently from a mostly idle one.
- Set the configured player slots to a level your hardware and resources can support, then increase them only after observing sustained CPU, memory and network use.
- Leave storage headroom for logs, resource updates, database growth and backups.
The FAQ states that server slots are bounded by hardware. Treat the slot setting as an upper limit you operate responsibly, not as evidence that the machine can deliver a particular experience at that number.
Download the correct alt:V server files
The download process in the official setup guide is deliberately selectable: you choose the branch, data files, module, sample configuration and, optionally, example resources.
- Open the official alt:V documentation and follow its server-download link.
- Choose the branch appropriate for your deployment. If you are following a project or resource that requires a particular branch, use that requirement rather than blindly selecting a different one.
- Select the data files requested by the download page.
- Select the module you will run:
js-modulefor this JavaScript guide orcsharp-modulefor a C# implementation. - Include the sample configuration if you want a starting
server.toml. Example resources are optional and can help confirm that the server starts before you add your own project. - Download the latest build supplied for your operating system and extract it into a dedicated server folder.
Keep the server files separate from your source-project checkout, database backups and deployment notes. That makes it easier to replace a binary build without accidentally deleting resources or configuration.
Start the server for the first time
Windows launch
Open PowerShell, Command Prompt or an integrated editor terminal in the extracted server folder and run the executable shown in the setup guide:
altv-server.exe
The process writes its startup information to the terminal. Press Ctrl+C to stop it cleanly. The illustrated command in the setup page is Windows-specific; do not copy it to Linux.

Linux launch
Use the Linux server binary and the launch instructions distributed with that Linux build. The documentation supplied for the JavaScript walkthrough does not publish a universal Linux command, so the safe procedure is to follow the executable name, permissions and arguments included with the downloaded Linux package rather than inventing a command.
What a first launch tells you
A first launch is a configuration check, not a production readiness test. Read the terminal output for missing modules, malformed TOML, unavailable resources and permission errors. Stop the process, correct one issue at a time, and launch again before exposing the machine publicly.
Configure server.toml
server.toml is the central configuration file. The official reference at the server configuration page documents the available keys, including server identity, network binding, slots, announcement, token, gamemode, language, description, modules, resources, logging, debug mode, CDN and thread settings.
A minimal JavaScript-oriented example looks like this:
name = 'My alt:V Server'
host = '0.0.0.0'
port = 7788
players = 128
announce = false
gamemode = 'Freeroam'
language = 'en'
description = 'Development server'
modules = ['js-module']
resources = ['example-resource']
These are illustrative values, not mandatory production settings. Replace the name, slot limit, gamemode, language, description and resource names with values for your project. The sample configuration contains more options, but the documentation warns against copying every sample option wholesale. Add only keys your deployment needs and consult the reference when you need password protection, logging, CDN, thread or debug settings.
Bind to the correct interface
host = '0.0.0.0' tells the server to listen on the machine’s available network interfaces, which is the usual choice for a publicly reachable deployment. A loopback-only binding would make the process reachable only from the same machine. Use the binding that matches your network design and verify it with your operating system’s listening-socket tools.

Set slots conservatively
The players value controls the configured slot ceiling. It does not override CPU, memory, script or database limits. Begin with a capacity your workload can support, watch the server under representative activity, and adjust rather than promising a universal player count.
Announcement and token fields
Keep announce = false while developing if you do not want the server on the masterlist. A token is not required for ordinary development. The FAQ says a token is required to announce a server on the masterlist or to test cloud authentication. When you need one, create a server in Server Manager and copy its private token into the configuration. Treat that token as a secret and do not publish it in a repository, screenshot or public support post.
Add resources and match their modules
Resources are loaded by folder name in the resources array. The JavaScript setup guide specifically notes that resource folder names are case-sensitive.
- Place the resource folder in the server’s resource directory.
- Copy its exact case-sensitive folder name into the
resourcesarray. - Make sure the module required by that resource appears in
modules, such asjs-modulefor JavaScript resources. - Read the resource’s own documentation for dependencies, database schema, configuration files and load order.
- Restart the server and inspect the terminal for a successful resource load or a precise missing-dependency error.
The configuration reference shows both js-module and csharp-module, but that does not make every resource interchangeable. A C# resource may need the C# module, while a JavaScript resource may need the JavaScript module. Do not add both modules merely to silence an error; enable the module your resource set actually requires.
Make the network path reachable
The default service port is 7788. The documented transport depends on whether you use a CDN:
| Deployment | Documented traffic for the server connection | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| No CDN | TCP and UDP on the configured port, 7788 by default. | Allow both protocols through the host firewall and any cloud security group, router rule or upstream network control. |
| With a CDN | The documentation says only UDP is used for that server connection. | Allow UDP on the configured port and configure the CDN according to the current server reference. |
If you change port in server.toml, change every matching firewall, security-group, router-forwarding and hosting rule. A port open on the operating system is not enough if a cloud firewall or home router still blocks it. Conversely, do not expose unrelated ports just because they appear in an example configuration.

Check reachability in layers
- Confirm the server process is running and bound to the intended host and port.
- Allow the documented protocol or protocols in the machine’s firewall.
- For rented hosting, add the same rule in the provider’s network firewall or security group.
- For self-hosting behind a router, forward the configured port to the server’s private address and verify that your ISP permits inbound traffic.
- Test from a different network, not only from the host itself. A local connection can succeed even when the public route is blocked.
You do not need a CDN for a basic deployment. Consider one only when your architecture and the current configuration documentation justify it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test privately before announcing the server
Run a small, controlled test before enabling masterlist announcement. Connect from a client on a separate network, verify that the server appears at the expected address, join with a test account and exercise the resources that matter to your gamemode.
- Check that the configured server name and description are displayed as intended.
- Confirm that every resource loads without case or dependency errors.
- Join and leave repeatedly to expose startup, disconnect and cleanup problems.
- Watch CPU, memory, disk and network use while several representative actions occur.
- Confirm that a restart returns the server to a known-good state.
The setup documentation identifies debug mode as a development aid and warns that reconnect is experimental. Enable debug output only when you are diagnosing a specific problem, and do not leave development debugging enabled without a reason on a public server.

Troubleshoot the failures that stop most first deployments
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The executable starts and exits immediately. | Missing prerequisite, incompatible binary, permission problem or malformed configuration. | Read the terminal output, confirm the operating-system build and prerequisites, validate server.toml, then launch again from the extracted server folder. |
| The server starts locally but nobody outside the machine can join. | Firewall, cloud security group, router forwarding, ISP restriction or incorrect public address. | Confirm the listening port, open the required protocol or protocols at every network layer, and test from another network. |
| A resource is not found. | The folder is in the wrong directory or its name differs in case from the resources entry. |
Move the folder into the resource directory and copy its exact case-sensitive name into the array. |
| A resource reports missing functionality. | The required scripting module is not enabled or the resource has an unmet dependency. | Match modules to the resource’s documented language and install or configure its stated dependencies. |
| Players cannot connect after changing the port. | Only server.toml was changed; an external firewall or forwarding rule still uses 7788. |
Update the host firewall, cloud rules and router forwarding to the new port and protocol requirements. |
| The server is listed publicly when it should be private. | announce is enabled or a token and announcement configuration were copied from another environment. |
Disable announcement during development and keep production and development configuration separate. |
| Performance degrades as players or scripts increase. | CPU, memory, database or script workload has exceeded the machine’s practical capacity. | Measure resource use, profile or disable expensive resources, add memory or CPU headroom, and lower the slot ceiling until the workload is stable. |
Operate the server after it works
Separate environments
Keep a development configuration with announcement disabled and a production configuration with deliberate network, slot and resource settings. Do not copy a production token into a shared development folder. Record which branch, module set and resource versions belong together so a rollback is possible.
Back up the parts that represent your work
Back up server.toml, custom resources, database data and any environment-specific configuration. A server binary can usually be downloaded again; an unbacked database or custom script cannot be reconstructed from the executable.
Monitor real workload
Check CPU utilization, memory consumption, storage growth, network behavior and errors during the busiest period you expect. The official specification figures are orientation only, so your own gamemode’s behavior is the evidence for changing the slot limit or machine size. Leave headroom for updates and peak activity rather than running permanently at the edge of available memory or CPU.
Update deliberately
Before replacing a build or resource, stop the server, preserve the current files and configuration, apply the change in a test environment when possible, and verify startup and player connection. If the new build introduces a problem, restore the known-good files and configuration instead of changing multiple variables at once.

What a complete first deployment looks like
- You selected Windows or Linux and chose JavaScript or C# based on your resources.
- The machine meets the documented prerequisites, including Node.js and Visual C++ Redistributable on the JavaScript Windows path, or
libatomic1on Linux. - You downloaded the current branch, data files, module and optional sample resources, then extracted them to a dedicated folder.
- The server launches from that folder and stops cleanly with
Ctrl+Con Windows. server.tomlhas an intentional name, host, port, slot ceiling, module list and resource list.- Resource folder names match the case-sensitive entries in the configuration.
- The host firewall and every upstream network rule match the configured port and CDN transport.
- You tested from outside the host, measured the actual workload and kept announcement disabled until the server was ready.
- You enable announcement and configure a private token only when masterlist publication or cloud-auth testing is required.
That sequence gives you a reproducible alt:V deployment without pretending that one provider, machine size or player number fits every gamemode. The official documentation remains the authority for new configuration keys and changes to server requirements.
