Left 4 Dead 2’s normal campaign lobby is designed for four survivors. To run an eight-player co-op game, you must host a dedicated SRCDS server and raise the player limit with compatible server variables and, in most setups, SourceMod/MetaMod extensions. The host then starts a map with +maxplayers 8, points the launch command at server.cfg, and gives friends a supported connection route.
This guide covers a self-hosted server from installation through campaign loading, plus containerized and managed alternatives. IP addresses, ports, map names and file paths shown as examples must be changed for your machine.
What an eight-player L4D2 server actually requires
An ordinary listen server does not turn a four-survivor campaign into an eight-player game just because more friends join the Steam lobby. The standard campaign rules, lobby limits and server variables still apply. Eight-player play requires a dedicated server process and configuration that removes or raises those limits.

Several names appear in community configurations: l4d_maxplayers, sv_maxplayers, sv_visiblemaxplayers and sv_removehumanlimit. Their behavior depends on the game build and the extensions installed. Treat them as server-side settings, not guaranteed built-in commands. If the console reports an unknown command or the lobby still caps at four, install or update the extension that supplies the command and test that exact version.

Choose where the server will run
Self-hosted SRCDS
Running SRCDS on a Windows or Linux machine gives you direct control over maps, add-ons, passwords and administration without a monthly provider rental. The trade-off is operational work: you must install the files, keep the process online, configure the firewall and router, apply updates, and resolve plugin or campaign conflicts. A home connection also needs a reachable public address or an equivalent network arrangement for friends outside your LAN.
Containerized deployment
A Docker container packages the server configuration and add-on directories in a repeatable layout. This is useful when you want to recreate the server, move it to another host, or keep the game files separate from the operating system. Docker does not remove the need for a machine, public connectivity, updates or port management; it only standardizes how the process is deployed.

Managed game-server hosting
A managed host keeps the machine and game process online for you, which is attractive when nobody in the group can leave a computer running. You still need to confirm that the service supports eight-player L4D2 configurations, custom campaigns, SourceMod/MetaMod and the connection method you want. Pricing, player-slot policies and affiliate terms vary by provider, so verify those terms directly before buying or recommending a service.
Prepare the host and network
- Use a machine that can remain powered on for the entire play session. The server can be modest, but it must have enough CPU, memory and upload capacity for eight players and any add-ons you select.
- Give the server a stable local address so a router rule does not break after a reboot. Record the address you will use as
YOURDEDIIPin the launch example. - Allow the SRCDS executable through the operating system firewall. On a home router, forward the game port you choose to the server’s local address. Keep the port consistent in the launch command and in the address you give friends.
- Decide whether the server is public or friends-only. A private group should set a player password and limit administrative credentials to trusted people.
- Check that the host’s network permits inbound connections. Carrier-grade NAT, corporate firewalls and some guest Wi-Fi networks can prevent direct hosting even when the local server appears healthy.
Use a private test first: connect from the host, then from another device on the same network, and finally from a friend outside the network. This separates game configuration problems from routing problems.
Install the dedicated server files with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is the command-line installer used to obtain and update the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated-server files. Install SteamCMD for the host operating system, choose a dedicated-server directory with sufficient free space, and run the installation or update command described in Steam’s Source Dedicated Server instructions.

- Download and unpack SteamCMD in a directory that the server account can read and write.
- Start SteamCMD and authenticate in the manner supported for dedicated-server downloads.
- Set the installation directory to the folder that will contain the
left4dead2server files. - Install or update the Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated app, then wait for SteamCMD to report completion rather than closing it during a download.
- Exit SteamCMD and confirm that the installation contains the SRCDS executable and a
left4dead2folder. Create a backup of the configuration directory before making changes.
Run SteamCMD again whenever you deliberately update the server. Updates can change game behavior or invalidate an extension, so schedule a short compatibility check before inviting the full group.
Create and maintain server.cfg
The dedicated-server guide describes server.cfg as the place for server console variables (cvars). Put the file in the server’s left4dead2/cfg directory. Keep comments that identify which settings are built into the game and which come from an extension; that makes recovery easier after an update.
The following is a starting template. Replace the example name and password, and keep extension-dependent lines only when the corresponding plugin is installed and recognizes them:

sv_removehumanlimit 1sv_maxplayers controls the server-side slot target in configurations that support it, while sv_visiblemaxplayers controls the number advertised to clients. l4d_maxplayers and sv_removehumanlimit are commonly supplied or acted on by extensions. If one line causes an unknown-command message, remove it temporarily, identify the missing extension, and test again rather than assuming that all four variables are interchangeable.
A password prevents strangers from filling the slots while you test. Do not put an RCON password, operating-system password or other administrative secret in a public post. Restrict file permissions so only the account running the server can edit the configuration.

Install SourceMod, MetaMod and player-limit extensions
SourceMod and MetaMod are optional server frameworks, but eight-player configurations frequently rely on them for administration and for commands that remove the normal human-player limit. Install versions intended for your current Left 4 Dead 2 server build, following each project’s installation layout. Restart SRCDS after copying files.
- Install MetaMod first, because SourceMod depends on it in the usual arrangement.
- Install SourceMod and confirm that the server loads both frameworks without startup errors.
- Add the player-limit or campaign-management plugin your configuration requires.
- Restart the server and watch the console for failed loads, missing dependencies or unknown cvars.
- Join with one client and verify that the server advertises eight slots before inviting the other players.
Do not mix files from different plugin releases casually. A game update can leave the process running while a binary extension fails, producing symptoms such as a four-player cap, invisible slots or a server that shuts down when a map starts. Keep a copy of the last known-good plugin set so you can roll back while checking compatibility.
Launch SRCDS with eight slots
From the directory containing the SRCDS executable, launch the process with the game, address, port, player count, configuration file and initial map. The representative Windows pattern is:
srcds.exe -console -game left4dead2 -ip 10.0.0.2 +port 27020 +hostip YOURDEDIIP +maxplayers 8 +exec server.cfg +map c2m1_highway10.0.0.2, 27020, YOURDEDIIP and c2m1_highway are examples. Substitute the host interface, forwarded port, reachable address and map you actually use. The important eight-player elements are +maxplayers 8 and +exec server.cfg; the map parameter gives the process an immediate campaign starting point.

Confirm that the server is ready
Before distributing the address, read the startup console from top to bottom.
- Confirm that the process loads
left4dead2, executesserver.cfgand starts the requested map. - Check that MetaMod, SourceMod and any player-limit plugin report successful loads. Unknown-command or failed-extension messages must be resolved before testing eight players.
- Verify that the advertised capacity is eight, not merely that the launch window contains
+maxplayers 8. - Join locally and create a short test lobby. Add a second tester from outside the host network if possible.
- Review CPU, memory, upload use and log growth during a map change. A server that reaches eight slots but cannot sustain the upload load will produce lag or disconnects.
Get friends into the dedicated server
Force a dedicated server from a lobby
Left4DevOps documents this route for groups that want to begin with a normal lobby. As the lobby host, set the server type to Best Available Dedicated, open the developer console and enter:

Keep the brackets out of the actual command. If the lobby ignores the command, confirm that the console is enabled, that the address is reachable from the host’s network, and that the server is accepting the selected map.
Use a Steam Group server
Configure the lobby to use the Steam Group server option and select the group associated with your dedicated host. This is convenient for recurring groups because players do not have to type an address every session. A LAN server may also appear automatically as a Steam Group server, so check the available list when everyone is on the same network.
Add the server in the in-game server browser
Have each player add the server’s public address and port in the Steam server browser, then join the listing once it appears. This method is useful when the lobby route selects another server, but it depends on correct port forwarding and the server being visible to the browser.

Connect directly from the developer console

connect [ip:port]Replace the placeholder with the public address and port. If the server uses a password, the player must supply it when prompted. Direct connection is the fastest diagnostic method because it bypasses lobby matchmaking; a failure here usually points to routing, firewall, password or server-startup configuration.

Valve’s workshop-hosting guidance specifies that Workshop campaigns on a dedicated server should be placed in the same location used on the client: /left4dead2/addons/workshop/…. Preserve the campaign’s directory structure and make sure the dedicated-server account can read the files.
Campaigns that were not downloaded from Workshop can still be placed in the server’s addons directory. Do not assume that copying a campaign to the host automatically installs it for clients: players may need the same Workshop item or the server may need a mechanism that distributes the required files. Test a custom map with two players before scheduling an eight-player session.
When a campaign is updated, stop the server, replace the old files, and start it again rather than overwriting active files during a map. Keep a list of the campaign version and any required plugins so you can identify which change introduced a failure.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server still allows only four players
- Confirm that the launch command includes
+maxplayers 8and actually executesserver.cfg. - Check the startup console for unknown commands involving
l4d_maxplayers,sv_maxplayersorsv_removehumanlimit. - Verify that the required SourceMod/MetaMod extension loaded and matches the current game build.
- Restart after changing cvars; changing the file while a map is running may not apply every setting.
Friends cannot connect
- Test the host’s local address first, then the public address from an outside network.
- Recheck the firewall rule, router forwarding target, selected port and the address given to friends.
- Make sure the SRCDS process is still running and listening on the same port shown in the launch command.
- If the host is behind carrier-grade NAT or a restricted network, use a different reachable machine or a managed host.
The lobby sends everyone to another server
Use mm_dedicated_force_servers [ip:port] as the lobby host, or bypass matchmaking with the direct connect [ip:port] command. Check that the lobby’s server type is set to Best Available Dedicated.
A custom campaign is missing or fails to load
Confirm the Workshop path is under left4dead2/addons/workshop/ and that non-Workshop files are under addons. Check spelling, permissions and campaign dependencies, then restart SRCDS and test the map by itself.
The server crashes after an update
Disable recently changed plugins and custom campaigns, start an official map, and read the console for the first load failure. Restore the last known-good extension set, then update one component at a time. Keeping configuration and add-on backups makes this rollback practical.

Recommended path for a first session
- Install the dedicated files with SteamCMD on a machine that can stay online.
- Create a password-protected
server.cfgand add only the eight-player variables supported by your installed extensions. - Install and verify MetaMod, SourceMod and the player-limit extension set.
- Forward the selected port, launch SRCDS with
+maxplayers 8 +exec server.cfgand start an official map. - Test a direct
connect [ip:port]from outside the host network. - Once eight slots work reliably, add Workshop or other campaigns one at a time.
- Record the working command, plugin versions and campaign paths so the next update can be tested against a known-good baseline.
