Download the official server pack, install the same Minecraft and NeoForge build on the server and every client, then choose between self-hosting and a managed host. For a small private group, begin with about 8–10 GB of RAM, monitor performance, and increase resources only when the actual player load requires it.

Identify the exact pack build first

Do not start by installing a random Forge profile or an older client pack. The server and every player must use the same modpack files, Minecraft version, loader, configuration, and datapacks.

Modpack Zombie Apocalypse: Last Days in the Wasteland
Minecraft version 1.21.1
Loader NeoForge
Server-pack version 18.5.0
File size 529.9 MB ZIP

Those details describe the latest official server-pack release identified for this guide. The project page also shows NeoForge and Forge entries for Minecraft 1.21.1 and 1.20.1, so a launcher may display several profiles. Select the profile that exactly matches the server pack you install; do not combine a 1.20.1 client with a 1.21.1 server or swap Forge and NeoForge.

The project page records 91,570 downloads. That number indicates distribution, not a tested player limit or a performance guarantee.

Choose how to host

Self-host from a computer or rented virtual machine

Self-hosting gives you control over files, Java settings, backups, ports, and update timing. It also makes you responsible for firewall rules, router configuration, uptime, storage, operating-system maintenance, and recovery when a mod or world causes a crash.

Use a managed Minecraft host

A managed host normally supplies a control panel, console, file manager, and an automated modpack installer. It avoids most manual networking work, but the advertised RAM, CPU allocation, backup schedule, data-center location, upgrade policy, and price differ by plan. Treat a host’s listed configuration as that host’s recommendation, not as a universal requirement for this modpack.

Provider page Documented pack-related offering How to interpret it
ServerPrism One-click setup; recommends at least 8 GB RAM for multiplayer. A reasonable starting allocation for a small group, not a guaranteed capacity.
FadeHost Describes 6–8 GB as typical for heavier modpacks, offers an 8 GB trial, and installs the complete pack, configs, and datapacks automatically. Confirm whether the trial and RAM allocation are still available in your region and plan.
WinterNode Preselects 10 GB RAM, lists Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, and advertises one-click installation with 12-hour backups. Check whether backups are included, retained for how long, and restorable from the panel.
CreeperHost Lists 5,000 MB minimum RAM, a 2 × 4.5 GHz minimum CPU specification, and 15 GB minimum SSD for its listed configuration. These are the page’s minimums for that configuration; world growth and mod updates may require more storage.
OUIHEBERG Describes choosing a plan, one-click installing the configured pack, and inviting friends; its page lists Minecraft 1.21.1 and 116K+ downloads. The download count is a provider-page figure and is not the same measurement as the project’s download count.
Spot.gg Lists pack releases through 16.0.0, released June 4, 2026, and advertises a 24-hour free-server period. Verify which pack release the installer deploys before allowing players to connect.

None of these listings establishes a universal player-capacity benchmark. Before paying, confirm the exact Minecraft and loader versions, whether RAM is dedicated, CPU limits, SSD capacity, backup retention, console and file access, upgrade rules, data-center location, network protection, and cancellation terms.

Self-hosting: complete setup

1. Prepare the machine and a dedicated directory

  • Use a machine that can remain online for the hours your group plays.
  • Install the Java runtime required by the NeoForge installer and keep the server in its own directory, separate from your client launcher files.
  • Leave free disk space beyond the ZIP size. The world, player data, logs, crash reports, and future pack updates all grow independently of the initial 529.9 MB download.
  • Give the machine a stable local IP address if you will forward a router port to it.

2. Download the official server pack

Download the 18.5.0 server-pack ZIP identified above from the project’s CurseForge file page. Keep the original ZIP as a recovery copy and verify that the download completed before extracting it.

3. Install the matching NeoForge server

Run the NeoForge installer for Minecraft 1.21.1 and choose its server-install option, pointing it at the dedicated server directory. Do not install only the client profile: a server requires the server libraries and launch files generated by the installer.

4. Extract the pack without flattening its folders

Extract the server-pack ZIP into the same server directory. Preserve the supplied mods, config, and datapack-related directories exactly as delivered. If your archive tool asks whether to merge folders, allow the merge; do not drag individual JARs into an unrelated instance and assume the result is equivalent.

5. Start once and accept the EULA

Launch the server with the script generated by the NeoForge installation. A first launch normally creates files and stops until the Minecraft EULA is accepted. Open eula.txt, change only eula=false to eula=true after reading the agreement, save it, and start the server again. If it stops for another reason, read the first error in the console or latest log before changing files.

6. Set the basic server properties

Stop the server cleanly before editing server.properties. The exact values are your policy choices; the important part is that you deliberately set them rather than relying on an unknown default.

Minecraft Dungeons: Standard Edition – Windows 10 [Digital Code]
  • Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Setting What to decide Practical starting approach
difficulty How punishing combat, hunger, and hostile mobs should be. Choose the difficulty your group wants; a harder setting suits a survival challenge but increases pressure on new players.
white-list Whether only approved accounts may join. Enable it for a private friend server, then add players from the console or panel.
view-distance How far the server sends world chunks to each player. Start conservatively and raise it only if the server remains responsive.
simulation-distance How far entities and game logic continue to run. Keep it lower than an aggressive visual distance when CPU load is high.
server-port The TCP port clients use to connect. Keep the chosen port consistent in the firewall, router rule, and connection instructions.
motd The name shown in a multiplayer list. Use a short name that identifies the private world and pack build.

After saving, start the server and confirm that it reaches a ready state without a crash report. Use the console to grant operator access only to people who actually administer the world.

7. Configure the firewall and router

  1. Allow the Java server process through the operating-system firewall on the chosen port.
  2. If the machine is behind a home router, create a port-forwarding rule from the router’s public interface to the server computer’s fixed local IP.
  3. Ensure the protocol and port match the value in server.properties. A mismatch produces a timeout even when the server itself is healthy.
  4. Test first from the same local network, then from a different network such as a phone hotspot. Testing from inside the same network can succeed even when public forwarding is broken.
  5. Give friends the public address and port only after the external test succeeds. Never publish a private LAN address as if it were reachable from the internet.

Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT and do not provide a routable public address. If port forwarding never becomes reachable despite correct local settings, ask the internet provider about a public address or use a managed host instead of repeatedly changing Minecraft files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Create an administrator backup routine

Stop the server cleanly before making a full world backup, or use a host’s documented snapshot mechanism. Keep at least one copy away from the live machine. Back up before changing the modpack, Minecraft version, loader, world-generation settings, or datapacks. A backup is useful only if you know where it is stored and have tested restoring a copy.

RAM, CPU, storage, and network sizing

Start with memory you can observe

For a small private group, 8–10 GB is a sensible starting range drawn from the hosting guidance: one provider recommends at least 8 GB, another describes 6–8 GB as typical for heavier modpacks, and another preselects 10 GB. These figures are starting points, not a promise that a particular number of players will run smoothly.

Do not allocate every byte of system RAM to Java. Leave room for the operating system, file cache, monitoring, and the launcher or other services. Increase the Java heap only after logs and live usage show memory pressure. A server that has ample heap can still lag when its CPU is saturated or when chunk generation spikes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU and world activity often determine lag

NeoForge modpacks can create bursts of single-thread CPU work during exploration, structure generation, mob activity, and large redstone or entity farms. View distance, simulation distance, number of loaded chunks, entity count, and how quickly players explore new terrain all affect the result. A higher advertised GHz number is not a complete performance comparison; ask a managed host whether the CPU allocation is shared, capped, or dedicated.

Leave room for worlds and updates

The pack archive is not a storage estimate for the finished server. Keep space for the world, region files, logs, backups, crash reports, and the next pack version. The 15 GB SSD figure listed by CreeperHost is a minimum for that provider’s configuration, not a maximum world size or a recommendation for every installation.

Watch the network path

Players need a stable route to the server, and the host needs enough upload capacity for the number of simultaneous chunk and entity updates. A server can show low memory use while players experience rubber-banding because the uplink, route, or host network is congested.

Make every player’s client match

Every player must install the client modpack; a vanilla Minecraft client cannot join this modded server. The client must use the same Minecraft version, NeoForge loader, mod versions, configs, and datapacks represented by the server pack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install a launcher that can import the modpack from its distribution page.
  2. Create or import the Zombie Apocalypse: Last Days in the Wasteland profile.
  3. Select the profile corresponding to Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, not a similarly named Forge or 1.20.1 profile.
  4. Let the launcher finish downloading every mod before opening the game.
  5. Enter the server’s public address and port in Multiplayer, or use the local address for a same-network test.
  6. If the server uses a whitelist, give the administrator the exact in-game account name before trying to join.

Do not copy only the visible mods folder from one computer and assume it replaces the complete pack. Configuration files and datapacks can change gameplay and compatibility even when the JAR list looks correct.

Managed hosting: what to verify during installation

  1. Choose a plan with at least the provider’s documented starting RAM and enough disk for the world and backups.
  2. Use the control panel’s modpack installer, then verify the displayed Minecraft version, loader, and pack release before starting.
  3. Open the console once to confirm that the server reaches a ready state and that no dependency is missing.
  4. Review the file manager for mods, config, and datapack directories; automated installation should place the complete pack, not just a launcher shortcut.
  5. Set the whitelist, difficulty, view distance, and port from the panel or file editor.
  6. Create a test backup and identify the restore procedure before inviting the whole group.
  7. Give players the matching client profile and the host’s address. A one-click server installation does not install mods on their computers.

Ask support which pack release is installed when a panel offers several versions. Spot.gg, for example, lists releases through 16.0.0 dated June 4, 2026, while the official server-pack build identified for this guide is 18.5.0; the labels are not interchangeable without checking the underlying files.

Updating without breaking the world

Before an update

  • Announce downtime and stop new players from joining.
  • Make a complete world and configuration backup.
  • Record the current Minecraft version, loader, pack release, and any edited server properties.
  • Read the new pack’s notes for migration instructions or removed mods.

Apply the update

  1. Install the new server pack into a clean staging directory rather than overwriting the only working copy.
  2. Move or merge the world only after confirming the loader and dependencies start successfully.
  3. Reapply intentional server-property changes; do not blindly replace the new configuration with an old one.
  4. Start the staged server and inspect the log for missing mods, datapack errors, or registry warnings.
  5. Give every player the identical client release before opening the server to the public.

Recover if the update fails

Stop the process, preserve the failed logs for diagnosis, and restore the previous server directory and backup. Never test an uncertain migration on the only copy of an established world.

Troubleshooting guide

Symptom Likely cause Action
“Incompatible modded server” or missing-mod message Client and server differ in Minecraft version, loader, mod, or config. Compare the installed profile with the server pack and reinstall the exact matching client profile.
Connection timed out Wrong address, blocked firewall, missing port forward, carrier-grade NAT, or an offline server. Check the server console, test locally, verify the chosen port in every layer, then test from an external network.
Connection refused The address is reachable but no process is listening on that port, or the port is mapped to the wrong machine. Start the server, confirm its bind and port settings, and correct the router destination.
Server exits immediately EULA not accepted, wrong Java runtime, incomplete NeoForge installation, or a startup exception. Read the first console error, verify eula=true, rerun the matching installer, and avoid deleting logs before diagnosis.
Frequent freezes while exploring Chunk generation, view distance, entity load, CPU limits, or insufficient memory headroom. Lower view and simulation distances, pause rapid exploration, inspect CPU and memory usage, and scale the host only after identifying the bottleneck.
Players join but gameplay differs Datapacks or configs were omitted, or clients are using a different release. Compare the server-pack directories and have all players reinstall the same profile.
Whitelisted friend cannot join The account name was entered incorrectly or whitelist mode is enabled without an entry. Copy the exact in-game name into the whitelist and have the player reconnect.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable with Java server files, router administration, backups, and diagnosing logs, and when you want full control over the machine.
  • Choose managed hosting when you value one-click installation, a control panel, automated backups, and a public endpoint more than low-level control.
  • In either case, start with the documented 1.21.1 NeoForge server pack, allocate roughly 8–10 GB for a small group, and adjust from measured CPU, memory, and tick performance rather than from an arbitrary player-count promise.

The reliable formula is simple: one exact server pack, one exact client profile, a reachable port, and a tested backup. Most failed joins come from breaking one of those four matches, not from the zombie gameplay itself.
