To host a WhatsApp call with someone who does not have a WhatsApp account, create a call link from the Calls tab, choose voice or video, and send the link privately. Turn on Require approval to join so every guest waits until you recognize and admit them. The guest opens the link in a computer browser, enters a name, and joins after your approval.
The link behaves like a bearer invitation: anyone who gets it can try to enter. Keep it out of public posts, verify every person in the waiting room, remove or block unexpected participants, and replace a link that has been forwarded beyond the intended audience.
What a WhatsApp guest call is
A WhatsApp call link lets an account holder invite people who are not in a WhatsApp group and may not have WhatsApp accounts. The host must have a WhatsApp account and creates the invitation. A guest does not need to register, install WhatsApp, or reveal a phone number to other participants.
WhatsApp’s guest-calling announcement of October 14, 2026 says a guest can open the invitation in a computer browser, type a name, and join a one-to-one or group call with up to 32 people once the host admits them. WhatsApp Web supports both audio and video calls. Calls themselves are free; a mobile or broadband provider may still charge for the data used.

Guest access is deliberately limited. Guests can share their computer screen, react with a thumbs-up or heart, and raise a hand. They cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send WhatsApp messages, or add another person directly to the call. Only the account holder who created the link can invite people through that link.
What you need before creating the link
- An active WhatsApp account on the host’s phone or supported WhatsApp client.
- A working internet connection. Video uses more bandwidth than voice, and provider data charges can apply.
- A computer browser for each guest who is joining without a WhatsApp account. The guest-calling announcement specifically describes browser joining on a computer.
- A microphone for voice calls and a camera for video calls. Guests must allow the browser to use those devices when prompted.
- The names or identities of the people you expect, so you can recognize them in the waiting room.
Decide in advance whether the call should be voice or video and whether every entrant must be screened. For a tutoring session, interview, appointment, or family call with people outside your contacts, approval is the safer default.
How to create and send a WhatsApp guest-call invitation
- Open WhatsApp and select Calls. This is the starting point for a call link; it is separate from starting a call inside an existing chat or group.
- Choose New call link. On some layouts this appears behind the plus or new-call control. WhatsApp generates a unique URL for that invitation.
- Select Video or Voice. Choose video when participants need to see one another or share visual material; choose voice when cameras are unnecessary or connectivity is limited.
- Enable Require approval to join when screening matters. With this setting on, arrivals stay in a waiting room until you admit them. The host manages admission in the call settings.
- Choose Copy link or Send link via WhatsApp. If you use another service, paste the URL into a private message addressed to the named invitees. Do not place it in a public post, an open forum, or a large group whose membership you do not control.
- Tell invitees not to forward the URL. Sending it from a channel they already recognize helps them distinguish the genuine invitation from a look-alike link that leads to an unfamiliar download page.
WhatsApp’s Help Center warns: "Anyone with your call link can join your call, so only share it with people you trust." Treat the URL as a secret invitation rather than as a public event address. Possession is enough to attempt entry, even if approval is enabled.

How a guest joins without a WhatsApp account
- Open the invitation in a computer browser through the official WhatsApp web flow.
- Enter a recognizable name when prompted. A name that matches the invitation or a previously agreed nickname makes host verification easier.
- Allow microphone and camera access if the browser asks for it and the call type requires those devices.
- Wait in the waiting room while the host checks the arrival.
- Remain on the page until the host admits you. WhatsApp’s October 14, 2026 announcement states: "Anyone joining as a guest always needs the call host’s approval."
Once admitted, a guest can participate in the one-to-one or group call, share a screen, use the listed reactions, and raise a hand. The guest cannot promote another person, send WhatsApp messages, or add a participant directly. If the host removes the guest, the guest-calling announcement says removal can happen at any time.

How to screen and control entrants
Use the waiting room as an identity check
Keep Require approval to join on whenever the link might be forwarded, the participants do not already know one another, or the call contains confidential discussion. Watch the waiting-room names and admit only people who match the expected list. If a name is vague or unexpected, ask the person to identify themselves through a separate trusted channel before admitting them.
Remove or block an unexpected participant
If someone who should not be present gets through, use the host controls to remove the participant. The Help Center also documents removal and blocking behavior for call-link participants. Do not continue a sensitive conversation while an unknown person remains connected; remove the person first and then confirm the roster.
Replace a link that escaped
Stop using a link as soon as it has been posted publicly, forwarded to an uncontrolled list, or sent to the wrong person. Create a fresh call link and distribute the replacement privately. WhatsApp says each URL is different, unused links expire after 30 days, and the company may revoke links for privacy and security reasons. Expiration or revocation is not a substitute for rotating a link immediately after a leak.

- Send individually: Address the message to each intended guest or to a small, controlled group whose membership you know.
- Use a trusted channel: WhatsApp messaging is the most direct option. If you use email, a work chat, or another messenger, verify the recipient address before sending.
- Separate the link from public details: You can announce the time publicly, but send the actual bearer URL only to the invitees.
- Set expectations: Tell guests the call type, start time, name they should use, and that they must wait for approval.
- Warn against forwarding: Explain that anyone who obtains the URL can attempt to enter, even if they were not on the original invitation list.
- Check the destination: A genuine invitation should open through WhatsApp or the official WhatsApp web flow. Do not follow an unfamiliar page that asks for an unrelated download or account credential.
For recurring meetings, create a new link for each session instead of treating one URL as a permanent room. That limits the audience if an old message is later forwarded.

Protect call privacy and network metadata
End-to-end encryption
WhatsApp says personal calls made through call links are end-to-end encrypted. That protects call content in transit, but it does not prevent an invited participant from hearing, recording, or photographing what is said. Host approval controls who gets inside; encryption protects the call while it travels.
Relay calls to hide IP addresses
If you do not want the other caller to learn your network IP address directly, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Protect IP address in calls. With this option enabled, calls are relayed through WhatsApp servers. WhatsApp notes that relaying can reduce quality.
Group calls are relayed by default and remain end-to-end encrypted. The setting is therefore most relevant when you are deciding how one-to-one calls should handle network metadata; it is not a way to make an untrusted guest trustworthy.
Choose the right call method

Use a guest link when at least one participant is outside the existing WhatsApp group or lacks an account. Use a group-chat call when everyone is already a known member and you do not need browser-based guest access.

What the host should do during the call
- Open the call a few minutes early. This gives you time to see arrivals in the waiting room before the scheduled discussion begins.
- Compare each displayed name with your expected list. Admit people one at a time when the session is sensitive or when several guests arrive together.
- Keep the participant controls available. If a person becomes disruptive or was admitted by mistake, remove or block them immediately.
- Pause before sharing confidential material. Approval confirms who is entering, not what they may do with information once admitted.
- End the call when the session is complete. For a later meeting, create and distribute a new link rather than reusing an exposed one.
Troubleshooting guest access
The guest cannot enter the call
First confirm that the guest is opening the complete URL in a computer browser and that the invitation has not expired or been revoked. Unused links expire after 30 days, and WhatsApp may revoke links for privacy or security. If the link was rotated, send the replacement rather than the old message. With approval enabled, the guest will not enter until the host admits them.
The guest is waiting but the host cannot identify them
Ask the guest to use the name agreed in the invitation and verify that identity through a separate trusted channel. Do not admit an unrecognized name merely because the person says they are expected.
Audio or video does not work
For a voice call, confirm that the browser has microphone access. For a video call, confirm both microphone and camera access. The guest can still wait for admission after granting permissions; device access does not bypass the host’s approval.

Protect IP address in calls relays traffic through WhatsApp servers and WhatsApp warns that relaying may reduce quality. If quality is more important than hiding the direct IP address, compare the call with the setting disabled in a low-risk test. Group calls remain relayed by default.

Costs, limits, and availability
WhatsApp describes calls as free, but the internet connection is not necessarily free. A mobile provider can charge for data, and a metered home or work connection may impose its own limit. The documented guest-call capacity is up to 32 participants once they are admitted, covering both one-to-one and group calls.
Guest browser access does not make every WhatsApp feature available. The documented guest capabilities are screen sharing, thumbs-up and heart reactions, and raising a hand; messaging, viewing other participants’ phone numbers, and adding another person are not available to guests.
Calendar invitations: planned later in 2026
WhatsApp says it plans to roll out Google and Outlook calendar integrations later in 2026. The proposed plugin would let an account holder connect the account and add a WhatsApp call link to a calendar invitation, allowing invitees to join with or without a WhatsApp account.

The announcement does not provide a firm release date, regional coverage, or commercial terms. Treat this as a future feature rather than a currently verified scheduling workflow. Until it is available in your account, create the link from Calls > New call link and send it privately yourself.
