The right way to host a website depends on what you are building. A brochure site or blog usually belongs on shared hosting or a website-builder plan; a plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript site can use free static hosting; a custom application may need a VPS or cloud service. Budget for the renewal price, a separate domain (about $10–$15 per year), and no separate SSL charge. This guide explains the trade-offs and gives a complete setup path.

What website hosting does

Hosting puts your site’s files and, when needed, its application runtime and database on an internet-connected server. When someone enters your domain, DNS directs the browser to that server. The server returns HTML, stylesheets, scripts, images and other responses that the browser renders.

Some services bundle a visual editor, updates and hosting into one plan. Others give you a server and expect you to upload files or configure the software yourself. The more control you receive, the more administration you normally take on.

  • Static hosting serves prebuilt HTML, CSS, JavaScript and media. It does not run server-side code or a database for each visitor.
  • Shared hosting places several customers on one managed server and commonly includes a control panel, email and one-click software installers.
  • Virtual private server (VPS) hosting gives you a virtual machine with reserved resources. You usually administer the operating system and web stack yourself.
  • Cloud hosting runs workloads on a pool of infrastructure and can add resources as traffic changes. Billing is often usage-based.
  • Website builders combine hosting with a hosted editor; the infrastructure is hidden behind the builder’s interface.
  • Home self-hosting runs the site on your own hardware, usually exposed through a secure tunnel. It offers control but requires the most networking and maintenance work.

Choose an option by site type

Site or requirement Best starting point Reason What to watch
Personal profile, portfolio or small brochure site Shared hosting or a builder Low cost and little server administration Renewal pricing, storage, backups and included SSL
Blog with a conventional content-management system Shared hosting Installers and managed server software are widely available Resource limits and update responsibility
Plain HTML/CSS/JavaScript project Static hosting Fast deployment and free tiers are available Build, file, bandwidth and commercial-use limits
Custom API, background worker or database application VPS or cloud hosting Server-side processes and configurable software Security patches, monitoring, scaling and administration
Unusual software or maximum infrastructure control VPS, cloud or home server You control the operating system and web server Technical effort, reliability and recovery planning

Start with the least complex option that meets your requirements. Moving from shared hosting to a VPS is possible when traffic or software needs grow; starting with a self-managed server before you need that control creates avoidable security and maintenance work.

Hosting costs: budget for the renewal price

Prices below are ranges reported by secondary 2026 cost guides, not quotes verified on provider pricing pages. Promotions, billing terms, location, storage, support and add-ons can change the amount you actually pay. Treat them as planning figures and confirm the checkout price before subscribing.

Option Reported cost Administration Typical fit
Shared hosting About $2–$15 per month Low to moderate; the provider manages the server Most new personal and small-business sites
VPS $10–$40 per month introductory; about $20–$100 per month at renewal Moderate to high unless managed hosting is purchased Custom applications and sites needing dedicated resources
Cloud hosting About $5–$200+ per month Varies from managed to fully self-administered Variable traffic and distributed applications
Static hosting Free tiers exist; paid tiers vary by provider and usage Low after a Git-based deployment is configured Static front ends and documentation
Website builder Included in the builder subscription; amount depends on the plan Low People who prefer a visual editor over server configuration
Home server plus tunnel One guide reports £0–£100 setup and £10–£30 recurring Very high Advanced users who accept reliability and networking work

Why an advertised introductory price is not your real cost

A low first-term price can conceal the amount charged after the promotion. One cited example advertises $2.95 per month and renews at $10.99 per month. Multiply the renewal rate by the number of months in your next billing term, then add the domain, backups, email, premium themes or other extras. The renewal figure is the number to use when comparing hosts.

Separate costs that are easy to miss

  • Domain registration: commonly about $10–$15 per year, billed separately from hosting.
  • SSL/TLS: should normally be included at no certificate charge.
  • Backups: some plans include automated snapshots; others charge for storage or restoration.
  • Management: a managed VPS costs more than an unmanaged one but can replace system-administration time.
  • Usage: cloud services may add charges for compute time, storage, requests or outbound data as traffic rises.

Can you host a website for free?

Yes, when the site is static and fits a provider’s limits. Free static hosting is practical for a portfolio, documentation, landing page or experiment. It is not a universal replacement for a paid host: dynamic server code, databases, private administration tools and some commercial uses require another arrangement.

Cloudflare Pages limits

A January 23, 2026 Cloudflare changelog says paid Pages plans can deploy up to 100,000 files. The free plan allows up to 500 builds per month, each build can run for no more than 20 minutes, and the project can contain up to 20,000 files. A large generated site or a frequently rebuilt project can reach those ceilings before it attracts much visitor traffic.

GitHub Pages limits and commercial-use qualification

GitHub Pages sites can be up to 1 GB, with a 10-minute deployment timeout and a soft bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month. There is also a soft limit of 10 builds per hour when using the normal publishing path; that limit is not applied when publishing through a custom GitHub Actions workflow. GitHub’s limits guidance says Pages is not intended or allowed to serve as a free web-hosting service for an online business, e-commerce site or similar commercial site. Check that policy before putting a revenue-generating site there.

When a free tier is a poor fit

  • Your application needs a database, private server-side code, scheduled jobs or user accounts.
  • You need guaranteed resources, contractual uptime or a support response time.
  • Your build regularly exceeds the file, build-time or build-count limits.
  • The provider’s acceptable-use rules exclude your commercial purpose.

A free tier can still be useful for development and previews. Keep your source repository and deployment configuration portable so you can move to paid hosting without rebuilding the site.

Domain names and HTTPS

Registering the domain

Choose a registrar, search for an available name, and confirm both the first-year price and the renewal price. Turn on account-level multi-factor authentication and domain-locking features when offered. Keep the registrar account separate from a freelancer’s personal account so your organization can recover control.

SSL/TLS should not be an extra charge

HTTPS encrypts traffic between the browser and your site and prevents browsers from displaying a certificate warning for a correctly configured domain. Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated certificate authority operated by the nonprofit Internet Security Research Group. Its default certificates are valid for 90 days and are designed to renew automatically. A hosting provider may charge a nominal administration fee, but charging for the certificate itself is not necessary. Treat a mandatory SSL upsell as a warning sign and ask what is actually included.

After enabling the certificate, test both the bare domain and the www hostname, confirm that HTTP redirects to HTTPS, and check that images, scripts and stylesheets also load over HTTPS. Mixed-content warnings usually mean one of those assets still uses an http:// URL.

Step-by-step: host a website

1. Define the site’s technical requirements

Write down whether you need only files or also server-side code, a database, email, scheduled jobs, private administration and user logins. Estimate storage, expected traffic and how often you will deploy. This prevents choosing a free static tier for an application that needs a runtime, or paying for a VPS for a five-page brochure site.

2. Register the domain

  1. Buy the domain through a registrar and record its renewal date and price.
  2. Enable multi-factor authentication, domain lock and recovery contacts.
  3. Decide whether the site will use the apex name (for example, example.com), www, or both. Plan one as the canonical address and redirect the other.

3. Select the hosting plan

  1. Compare the renewal price rather than only the introductory rate.
  2. Check storage, file-count limits, CPU or memory quotas, traffic policies, backup frequency and restoration fees.
  3. Confirm that the plan supports your software version and includes HTTPS without a mandatory certificate purchase.
  4. For a free service, read build, bandwidth, file-size and commercial-use rules before publishing.

4. Connect DNS to the host

The host will provide either nameservers or individual DNS records. Changing nameservers delegates the entire DNS zone to the host. Adding records leaves DNS at your registrar and normally requires an address record for the apex domain and a CNAME or equivalent for www. Copy the values exactly, remove conflicting old records, and allow time for caches to expire. Keep the registrar login available until the new records resolve consistently.

5. Deploy the site

  • Shared hosting: use the control panel’s file manager or FTP/SFTP to upload the document root. Create the database and user if the application requires one, then run the installer supplied by the software.
  • Static hosting: connect the Git repository, choose the build command and output directory, and trigger a deployment. Verify that the generated files—not only the source files—are published.
  • VPS: apply operating-system updates, create a non-root administrative user, configure a firewall, install a web server such as Nginx, upload the application, and run it under a process manager. Keep secrets outside the public document directory.
  • Builder: choose a template, edit content, connect the domain in the builder’s settings and publish. Export or back up content if the platform supports it.

6. Enable HTTPS

  1. Use the host’s one-click certificate feature or its Let’s Encrypt integration.
  2. Wait for DNS validation to complete if the host requests it.
  3. Turn on automatic renewal and record how renewal failures are reported.
  4. Visit the HTTPS address, inspect the certificate, and redirect HTTP traffic to HTTPS.

7. Test before announcing the site

  • Open the canonical URL on a phone and desktop browser.
  • Test navigation, forms, account creation, password resets and checkout flows if applicable.
  • Check a missing page to confirm the intended 404 response.
  • Inspect browser developer tools for failed scripts, images, fonts or mixed-content requests.
  • Verify that contact forms deliver to the intended mailbox and that spam protection does not block legitimate submissions.
  • Run a backup and a restoration test rather than assuming a backup exists because a plan advertises one.

How the hosting choices differ in practice

Shared hosting

Shared hosting is the practical default for many new sites because the provider handles the operating system and common server configuration. It is inexpensive, but neighboring accounts share the machine’s capacity. A sudden traffic spike, heavy plugin or inefficient query can encounter CPU, memory or process limits. Ask whether backups are daily, how long they are retained, and whether restoring them costs extra.

VPS hosting

A VPS gives you reserved virtual resources and root-level flexibility. You choose the web server, runtime, database and deployment method. The trade-off is responsibility: patching, firewall rules, SSH protection, monitoring, log rotation, certificate renewal and recovery become your tasks unless you buy a managed service. The reported 2026 ranges distinguish introductory pricing ($10–$40 monthly) from renewal pricing ($20–$100 monthly), so compare both.

Cloud hosting

Cloud hosting is useful when demand changes or when the application benefits from multiple services. Costs can range from about $5 to more than $200 per month because billing may follow resource consumption. Set budgets and alerts, understand outbound-data charges, and test what happens when an instance or region fails. “Scales automatically” does not mean “costs remain fixed.”

Home hosting through a tunnel

Running a server at home can cost little when hardware already exists; one 2026 guide reports £0–£100 for setup and £10–£30 in recurring costs. You must handle power outages, residential upload limits, dynamic addresses, patching, backups and tunnel configuration. Do not expose an unpatched home machine directly to the public internet. This is an advanced learning project, not the easiest path for a business site.

Security, maintenance and reliability checklist

  • Keep the operating system, CMS, plugins, runtimes and dependencies patched.
  • Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for the registrar, host, repository and administrator accounts.
  • Limit administrator privileges; use SFTP or SSH keys rather than plain FTP or shared passwords.
  • Store backups in a separate location and periodically restore one to verify it is usable.
  • Monitor certificate expiry, DNS changes, disk usage, error rates and unusual traffic.
  • Remove unused plugins, themes, accounts and open ports.
  • Document who owns the domain, where DNS is hosted, how deployments run and how to restore the site.

Troubleshooting common launch failures

The domain shows an old site or does not resolve

Check which nameservers are authoritative, then compare the live records with the values supplied by the host. A stale record, a typo, or cached DNS can send visitors elsewhere. Test from more than one network and wait for the previous record’s cache lifetime before changing settings repeatedly.

HTTPS works on one hostname but not the other

Ensure both the apex and www names point to the service and are included in the certificate. Configure one canonical hostname and redirect the other. If validation fails, correct DNS first; certificate issuance cannot succeed while the domain points to a different service.

The site displays a directory listing or a blank page

For static hosting, confirm that the output directory contains an index.html. For shared hosting, check the document-root setting and application error logs. On a VPS, verify that the web server’s virtual-host configuration points to the deployed directory and that the application process is running.

A deployment fails or times out

Read the build log, confirm the runtime version and environment variables, and check file counts and build duration. The free Cloudflare Pages plan allows 500 builds monthly, 20-minute build timeouts and 20,000 files; GitHub Pages has a 10-minute deployment timeout and a soft 10-builds-per-hour limit on its normal publishing path. Reduce generated files, cache dependencies, or move to a suitable paid or self-managed workflow when the project genuinely exceeds those limits.

The application is slow after launch

Check resource graphs, database queries, logs and asset sizes before upgrading. A shared plan may be hitting process limits; a VPS may need caching or a larger instance; a cloud deployment may be incurring throttling or cold starts. Fix the measured bottleneck rather than buying capacity blindly.

A practical decision framework

Priority Choose Accept the trade-off
Lowest recurring cost for a normal small site Shared hosting Shared resources and a higher renewal price than the promotion
Fastest no-code launch Website builder Less portability and a subscription tied to the platform
Free hosting for a non-commercial static project Static free tier Build, file, bandwidth and policy limits
Control over software and predictable virtual resources VPS Server administration or the cost of managed administration
Elastic capacity for changing demand Cloud hosting Usage-based bills and more architectural complexity
Maximum control as a technical hobby Home server and tunnel Reliability, security and networking work

For most first-time personal and small-business sites, start with shared hosting or a builder, compare renewal rates, register the domain separately, and enable the included HTTPS. Use free static hosting when the site is genuinely static and its rules fit your purpose. Move to a VPS or cloud service when your application needs server-side control, reserved resources or measured scale.
