The reliable way to host Unturned in 2026 is to install the official Unturned Dedicated Server tool, create a server configuration, and then choose the connection method that matches your players. If everyone is on the same home or school network, keep the server on the default LAN/private setup. If players will connect over the Internet, configure a Game Server Login Token and use either Fake IP or router port forwarding. The official documentation describes Fake IP as the easier option for most servers.
This guide covers the Steam Library installation for a straightforward single server, the SteamCMD method for advanced or multi-server installations, server IDs and configuration, LAN and Internet access, Linux, testing, updates, and the common reasons a server cannot be joined.
Choose the right hosting design first
Before installing anything, answer one question: where will the players be connecting from? The answer determines whether you need Internet networking at all.

There is no sourced universal minimum for CPU, memory, bandwidth, or storage in the material available for this guide. Use a computer that can run the server and the game environment you intend to host, and watch its resource use during your own sessions rather than relying on an invented specification.

Install the Unturned Dedicated Server
Option A: Steam Library installation
This is the least complicated route for a single server on a computer where you already use Steam.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Use the Library search and locate Unturned Dedicated Server. If it is hidden by your current filter, change the filter so tools or dedicated-server software are shown.
- Select the tool, choose Install, and select the disk location that will hold the server files and saves.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading the dedicated-server files. Do not install only the regular Unturned game and assume that it is the same component; the dedicated tool is the server package.
- Launch the dedicated-server tool from the Library. On its first run, allow it to create the server’s data structure, then stop it cleanly so you can configure it before inviting players.
The official description summarizes the purpose of this tool directly: “Players can host their own multiplayer servers through the Unturned Dedicated Server tool.” Official documentation.
Option B: SteamCMD for an advanced installation
SteamCMD is the better fit when the machine will run without the normal Steam interface, when you want repeatable updates, or when you plan to run multiple Unturned servers. Each server still needs its own server ID and data location, so separate instances do not overwrite one another.
- Install SteamCMD for your operating system from the current SteamCMD documentation and place it in a directory you control.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the SteamCMD directory.
- Start SteamCMD and use an anonymous login.
- Install or update the Unturned Dedicated Server app with the official app ID.
- Exit SteamCMD after the update completes.
The core command sequence is:
login anonymous
app_update 1110390
quitapp_update 1110390 is also the update command. Run it again whenever you want SteamCMD to check for and apply a newer server build. The official advanced guide explains the surrounding SteamCMD setup and launch considerations: Using SteamCMD (Advanced Setup).
Keep the server installation in a directory with enough free space and with permissions that allow the account running the server to create configuration and save files. On a shared or production machine, using a dedicated operating-system account is a sensible administrative practice, but the official Unturned pages do not prescribe a particular account layout.
Understand server IDs, saves, and configuration
Unturned organizes server data by server ID. A server ID is not merely a display name: it separates that instance’s configuration and saved world from other instances on the same installation. If you run two servers, give them different IDs so each has its own settings and progress.

The official knowledgebase explains the server’s configuration-folder organization and how administrators set options. Start with only the settings your players need:
- Server identity: choose a clear ID and an in-game name that friends can recognize.
- Map: select the map through the documented server commands or configuration for that server ID.
- Privacy and access: decide whether the server is a private session for known players or an Internet server intended for broader access.
- Persistence: keep the server ID and its save data stable; changing IDs can make the server appear to have lost its previous world because the new ID points to a different data set.
Do not copy every command you find into a configuration file. The exact commands and available settings can change with the game version. Use the current Unturned 3 Server Hosting knowledgebase for the setting you actually need, then restart the server when a setting requires a fresh launch.
How to make a LAN server for friends
Choose LAN/private hosting when all players can reach the host through the same local network or through the private connection method documented for your setup. LAN is the default in the official guide, so you do not need to configure public Internet access merely because several people are joining the same household or local network.
- Install and launch the Unturned Dedicated Server as described above.
- Assign a distinct server ID and set the desired map and basic options in that server’s configuration.
- Start the server and wait until it has completed its startup process.
- Have each player open Unturned and use the in-game server connection or LAN listing appropriate to the current game version.
- If the server does not appear automatically, use the host’s local address and the connection method shown by the current official instructions rather than guessing an Internet address.
The host computer must remain powered on and the dedicated-server process must remain running. Closing the server window, putting the computer to sleep, or ending the process makes the world unavailable even though the configuration is correct.
LAN checks when friends cannot join
- Confirm that the host and player are connected to the same local network, not one on a guest Wi-Fi network isolated from other devices.
- Check the host operating system’s firewall prompt and allow the dedicated-server application on the intended private network.
- Verify that everyone is running compatible game and server versions after an update.
- Confirm that the server finished loading the selected map before attempting to connect.
- Use the server ID and save directory you configured; accidentally starting a different ID can make it look as if settings or progress disappeared.
You do not need a Game Server Login Token or public Internet networking for a purely local session. Those requirements apply when you make the server reachable over the Internet.

An Internet server has two additional requirements beyond installing and configuring the dedicated tool: a Game Server Login Token and one of two connectivity methods. The official wording is explicit: “For an Internet server, you must configure either Fake IP or Port Forwarding.” Official advanced setup documentation.

Step 1: prepare the server and token
- Finish the dedicated-server installation and create the server ID you will use publicly.
- Follow the current official token instructions to obtain and apply a Game Server Login Token for the server. Token requirements and account procedures can change, so use the instructions linked from the official hosting documentation rather than an old community post.
- Enter the token in the configuration location specified for that server ID.
- Review the current official server-hosting page and advanced setup page for the exact current labels and rules before exposing the server.
Treat the token as a credential. Do not publish it in screenshots, chat, scripts shared with players, or public configuration repositories. If you believe it has been exposed, use the current official token-management instructions to replace or revoke it.
Step 2: choose Fake IP or port forwarding

Using Fake IP
For most first-time public servers, begin with Fake IP because the official documentation presents it as the easier route. Enable it in the server configuration exactly as the current guide specifies, keep the Game Server Login Token configured, and restart the server. Watch the startup output for an error indicating that the token or Fake IP configuration was rejected.
Fake IP does not eliminate the need to keep the host running or to comply with hosting rules. It also does not turn a LAN-only server into an Internet server unless the server is configured as an Internet server and the token and connectivity requirements are satisfied.

Port forwarding requires coordination between three places: the Unturned server configuration, the host computer’s firewall, and the router. The router rule must send the required traffic to the correct local address of the computer running the server. If the host’s local address changes, a rule that worked yesterday may point at the wrong device today.
- Read the current official port-forwarding instructions for the version you are running.
- Give the host a stable local address using the method supported by your router or network administration.
- Create only the forwarding rules required by the official guide, targeting that host address.
- Allow the corresponding application or traffic through the host firewall.
- Configure the server as an Internet server, apply the Game Server Login Token, and restart it.
- Test from a device outside the host’s local network. A test from inside the same LAN can succeed even when the public route is incorrect.
Do not assume that a port number copied from an unrelated game applies to Unturned. The official sources supplied for this guide deliberately do not establish a universal port list, and router interfaces differ by manufacturer and firmware.
Public-server rules and listing requirements
An Internet-reachable server is not just a private game with a wider address. The official documentation points administrators to the Server Hosting Rules and server-list requirements. Read the current rules before advertising the server publicly, changing its visibility, or inviting unknown players.

Rules can cover naming, configuration, authentication, or listing behavior, and they may be updated independently of the game client. Link your own administration checklist to the current official pages instead of treating an old tutorial as permanent policy. The official hosting entry point is Setting up a Server.

Linux dedicated-server setup
Linux administrators can use SteamCMD with the same Unturned app ID, then launch a chosen server ID from the installed files. The community-maintained Linux guide supplies a concrete example, but it is supplementary; prefer the official documentation if the two differ.
- Install SteamCMD and use anonymous login.
- Install or update app ID
1110390:
login anonymous
app_update 1110390
quit- Change to the directory containing the installed server files and the Linux helper script.
- Launch the Internet server with the server ID you selected:
./ServerHelper.sh +InternetServer/MyServerIn this example, MyServer is the server ID. Replace it with your own ID, and use a different ID for every additional server so configurations and saves remain separate. The Linux-specific command and surrounding notes are documented in the Linux dedicated server community guide.
Before accepting public connections, apply the Game Server Login Token and the current Fake IP or port-forwarding requirements. A shell command that starts the process does not, by itself, satisfy the Internet-server rules.

A short staged test prevents you from debugging map settings, firewall rules, and public connectivity simultaneously.
- Local process test: start the server and verify that it completes startup without configuration or authentication errors.
- Same-network test: from another device on the LAN, confirm that a player can see and join the server.
- Internet test: only after LAN access works, test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot or a friend’s connection.
- Persistence test: stop the server cleanly, start the same server ID again, and verify that the world and settings are present.
- Update test: after running Steam or SteamCMD updates, restart the server and confirm that clients can still connect.
Ask the remote tester to report the exact symptom: no listing, timeout, immediate disconnect, authentication error, or a map/version mismatch. Each symptom points to a different layer of the setup.

Maintenance that prevents avoidable outages
Update deliberately
For SteamCMD installations, run app_update 1110390 and then restart the server. Do not update files while the process is actively writing a save. For Steam Library installations, let Steam finish its update before launching the dedicated tool.
Back up each server ID
Back up the configuration and save data associated with every server ID before changing maps, applying major updates, or editing several settings at once. Label backups with the server ID and date so you can restore the correct world. The official organization by server ID is what makes separate backups and restores practical.
Keep credentials private
Store the Game Server Login Token where only the server administrator can read it. Remove it from public logs and avoid pasting full configuration files into support forums.
Record the network design
Write down whether the server uses LAN, Fake IP, or forwarding; which machine hosts it; and which router rule or firewall profile applies. This record makes troubleshooting much faster after an ISP, router, or operating-system change.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The dedicated tool is installed but no server appears
- Confirm that you installed Unturned Dedicated Server, not only the regular game.
- Start the dedicated tool and wait for the server to finish loading.
- Check that you launched the intended server ID and that its configuration contains the selected map.
- For a LAN test, verify that the client and host are on the same non-isolated network.
LAN works, but remote players cannot connect
- Confirm that the server is configured for Internet access rather than LAN-only operation.
- Check that a valid Game Server Login Token is configured.
- If using Fake IP, revisit the current official Fake IP instructions and inspect startup errors.
- If using forwarding, verify the router target address, host firewall, and current official port requirements.
- Test from outside the local network; internal tests can hide public-routing problems.
The server stopped after a reboot
- Make sure the dedicated-server process was actually started after the computer came back online.
- Check that the server account still has permission to read and write its installation and save directories.
- For SteamCMD, update first if the client and server versions no longer match.
- Confirm that the router’s forwarding rule still targets the host’s current local address.
A new server appears to have lost progress
Check the server ID. Starting a different ID selects a different configuration and save location, so the original world may still be intact under the first ID. Restore the original ID rather than creating more copies until you have identified the correct data.
Players receive a version or map mismatch
- Update the dedicated server and allow the client update to finish.
- Confirm that the configured map is available and spelled as required by the current server commands.
- Restart after changing settings that are read only during startup.
When a managed host is a better fit
Running the dedicated server yourself gives you control over the files, server ID, updates, and network design, but it also leaves you responsible for uptime, backups, firewall changes, and rule compliance. A managed Unturned host can be reasonable when you do not want to maintain a computer or configure a router. Availability, pricing, hardware, and current Unturned support differ by provider, so verify those details directly before paying. The official setup material does not establish a required provider or a particular service plan.

For a few friends on one local network, install the Dedicated Server tool from the Steam Library, use one server ID, configure the map, and stay with LAN/private access. For an Internet server, use SteamCMD if you need automation or multiple instances; otherwise the Steam Library route is sufficient. Then apply a Game Server Login Token and start with Fake IP, which the official documentation identifies as easier and adequate for most servers. Choose port forwarding only when that network design is intentional and you are prepared to follow the current router and firewall instructions exactly.
Finally, review the current official hosting rules before making the server public. The setup is complete only when the process starts cleanly, the intended server ID loads the right world, local testing succeeds, and a remote player can connect through the access method you selected.
