To host Trivia Murder Party 3, one person runs the standalone game on a supported platform and displays its game screen. Everyone else joins with a phone, tablet, computer, or other web-enabled device by opening Jackbox.tv and entering the four-letter room code shown on that screen. You can play in the same room, host a remote group through a video call, or combine local and remote players. The official product page lists one to eight players, while the publisher’s online-play FAQ says the game includes online matchmaking without an additional subscription from the game itself.
What you need before starting
A host copy of the game
The host needs access to Trivia Murder Party 3 on the platform where the session will run. Jackbox Games’ checkout listing describes it as a standalone digital game. The host’s device produces the game video and audio; participants do not install the game simply to act as controllers.
Check the store listing for the platform edition and its current system requirements before game night. The product page currently labels the title as Early Access and says it is out in Early Access. That status, supported platforms, requirements, features, and price can change as development continues, so verify the listing close to your session.

A screen everyone can see
For a local gathering, use a television, monitor, or projector connected to the host device. For remote play, the host shares this game screen in a video call. Players need to see prompts, answer choices, timers, the room code, and results clearly; a small or heavily compressed shared window can make those elements difficult to read.

One browser-enabled device per player
Each participant uses a phone, tablet, computer, or another device with a modern web browser. The device is the player’s controller. It does not replace the screen running the game, so keep the host display visible while answers are entered privately on personal devices.
Players and time
The official game page lists support for one to eight players. Its listed duration is 20 minutes; treat that as a product-page estimate for a game session, not a guarantee. Allow additional time for people to connect, solve browser or audio problems, and take breaks between rounds.
Choose the right way to play
| Mode | How it works | What the group needs | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local room-code play | The host runs the game on a shared screen, and everyone in the room enters the displayed code at Jackbox.tv. |
One host copy, a visible screen, internet-capable player devices, and a shared room. | No video call is needed; make sure the display and audio reach everyone. |
| Remote play with matchmaking | The host runs the game and uses the game’s online matchmaking while friends participate remotely. | One host copy, player devices, and a reliable way to communicate and view the game. | The game’s FAQ says its matchmaking does not require an additional subscription, but a console’s own online-service rules may still apply. |
| Mixed local and remote play | People beside the host join locally, while remote friends watch the shared screen and join from their own browsers. | Everything needed for local play plus a video call and screen sharing. | Remote players must be able to see and hear the same game information as people in the room. |
When local play is best
Use local room-code play when the group is physically together. It is the simplest arrangement: the host supplies the game screen and audio, and each person joins from a browser. Put the room code where everyone can read it without interrupting the game.

When to use remote matchmaking
Choose online matchmaking when participants are in different places and you want the game’s built-in online option. The publisher describes this as an addition to, not a replacement for, local play. After purchasing the game, the game itself does not add a separate matchmaking subscription charge according to the FAQ.
When a mixed group makes sense
A mixed session works when some friends are in the host’s room and others are remote. Local players still use their own browser devices, while remote players join through the shared call and the same game session. Arrange the camera and microphone so remote participants can follow the room without creating distracting feedback.
How to host the game step by step
- Confirm the edition and requirements. Open the platform’s current listing for Trivia Murder Party 3. Confirm that the host device meets the stated requirements and that the game is installed or otherwise ready to launch.
- Decide whether anyone is remote. For a fully local group, prepare the shared display. For a remote or mixed group, create a video call before launching the game and make sure participants know how they will receive the shared screen.
- Start the game on the host device. Launch the standalone title and select the option that begins a game session. Keep the game window visible rather than switching to another application.
- Share the game screen if needed. In the video-call application, share the window or display containing the game. The publisher’s FAQ names Discord and Google Meet as examples of services that should support play over video, along with other compatible platforms. App labels and permissions vary, so select the actual game window when that option is available.
- Show the room code. Wait for the game to display its four-letter code. Read it aloud and leave it visible long enough for everyone to enter it.
- Ask players to join from their own devices. Each person opens a browser, goes to
Jackbox.tv, and enters the four-letter code from the host screen. They then follow the prompts on their device to join the lobby. - Check the lobby before starting. Confirm that the expected names appear and that every participant can see the game screen. If a person is missing, pause and have that person re-enter the code before you begin.
- Start the round. Once the lobby is correct, begin the game from the host screen. Keep the shared display on the game throughout the session so players can read questions, timers, and results.
How friends join your session
Joining from a phone or tablet
Players open the device’s browser and enter Jackbox.tv. They type the four-letter room code displayed by the host, then complete the on-screen join prompts. A phone or tablet is sufficient as the controller; no dedicated gamepad is identified as required by the official setup.

Joining from a computer
A computer browser can serve as the controller in the same way. The player should keep the controller page available while watching the shared game screen. If the game is being played through a video call on that same computer, use a separate browser tab or window for the controller so the game stream remains easy to follow.
Joining in a mixed group
People in the host’s room and people elsewhere use the same room-code process. Local players do not need to hand a controller to remote participants, and remote participants do not need a second copy of the game merely to enter answers.
Setting up a remote or mixed game
Make the game view readable
Share the display that contains the game rather than a presenter’s entire desktop when possible. Tell remote players how to enlarge the shared video, and keep the code and on-screen instructions visible while the lobby fills. If the call offers a choice between a single application window and the full display, choose the window that actually runs the game.
Send game audio through the call
Remote players need the game’s spoken instructions and sound effects as well as its video. Enable the call’s option for sharing computer audio when it is offered. If the host is also speaking through a microphone, monitor for echo and mute duplicate microphones or nearby devices.
Keep private answers private
Players should enter answers on their own controller devices, not by announcing them in the call. The host display can be public; the controller page is where each participant supplies responses. Remind viewers not to point a camera at another player’s device if answers are meant to remain hidden.
Use a stable conversation channel
The publisher specifically cites Discord and Google Meet as examples of video applications that should support play over video, just like earlier Jackbox titles. Other services may work, but settings, bandwidth behavior, and screen-sharing controls differ. Choose one call for the whole group, send its invitation before the game begins, and avoid changing services mid-session unless the original call fails.

Subscriptions, purchases, and platform rules
The game is sold as a standalone digital title
The official checkout listing presents Trivia Murder Party 3 as a standalone digital game. The cited setup does not establish a boxed edition, physical media requirement, or dedicated controller requirement. The practical purchase is the host’s digital copy on the platform being used.
Online matchmaking and subscriptions
Jackbox Games’ online-play FAQ says no subscription is needed for online matchmaking within the game after purchase. The same FAQ qualifies that statement for console users: the console platform may still require its own subscription for online services. Check the current rules for the specific console account and region rather than assuming the game’s policy overrides the platform’s policy.
What other players need to buy
The official instructions describe the host running the game while participants connect through a web browser. They do not say that every player must buy a copy. Do not purchase extra copies or accessories unless the platform’s current listing explicitly requires them for your chosen arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting during setup
The official pages establish the broad connection method but do not provide app-by-app fixes for every call service, network condition, or platform. The checks below follow the documented setup and isolate the most common points of failure without assuming a particular device model.
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The room code is rejected | A character was mistyped, or the lobby code changed. | Look at the host screen again, re-enter the current four-letter code, and wait for the join confirmation before trying another device. |
| A player cannot see the game | The person joined the controller page but not the shared screen. | Open the video-call view containing the host’s game display. The browser controller does not replace that display. |
| The host screen is visible but silent | Computer audio may not be included in screen sharing, or a call microphone may be muted. | Recheck the call’s shared-audio setting and the host device’s output volume. Avoid enabling multiple microphones in the same room. |
| Remote players hear an echo | More than one nearby device is sending the same room audio. | Mute extra microphones or speakers, use headphones where practical, and leave one clear audio path for the room. |
| A player disappears from the lobby | The browser page may have lost its connection or the player may have left the join page. | Have the player refresh or reopen Jackbox.tv, enter the currently displayed code, and verify the name before starting. |
| The shared game is hard to read | The call window is too small or the stream is being viewed at low resolution. | Enlarge the shared video, share the game window directly, and keep important text on the host display for a moment before advancing. |
| The game will not connect on a console | The console’s online-service requirements may apply independently of the game’s matchmaking policy. | Check the console account and platform service status, then confirm that the game edition and network connection match the current store requirements. |
Host practices that prevent avoidable delays
Send instructions before game time
Tell friends in advance that they need a browser-enabled device and the video-call invitation if they are remote. Sending the simple sequence—open Jackbox.tv, wait for the four-letter code, enter it—keeps the lobby focused on joining rather than troubleshooting.
Prepare the display first
Open the game on the intended screen before inviting everyone. Check that the host can read the room code from the viewing position and that remote participants can distinguish text on the shared stream.

Use names people recognize
Ask participants to choose recognizable in-game names so the host can confirm the lobby quickly. Avoid changing names repeatedly while people are still connecting; it makes it harder to identify a missing player.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start only after the lobby is correct
Do not begin while someone is still trying to join. A short lobby check is easier than interrupting a round to solve a missing controller or an incorrect code.
Plan for the published duration, not a promise
The product page’s 20-minute figure is an estimate. Schedule a buffer for setup, introductions, connection retries, and any pause needed by your group. A larger social session may take longer than the listed play time even when the game itself runs normally.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Early Access changes for hosts
The product page currently identifies Trivia Murder Party 3 as Early Access and says it is available in that state. Early Access means the version, requirements, online features, or interface may be updated by the publisher. Recheck the official product listing before an important event, especially if your last session was weeks or months ago.
Do not assume that an earlier room-code flow, platform requirement, or matchmaking behavior will remain unchanged. If an update alters the launch screen or connection process, follow the labels shown by the current build while retaining the same basic model: the host runs the game, the display shows the session, and players use browser devices to join.

Yes. The publisher says local play remains available and that local players can join an online group with remote players. Use the shared screen for everyone and let each participant join through a browser device.

Do we need physical controllers?
No dedicated controller is identified as required. The official setup uses phones or other web-enabled devices as controllers through Jackbox.tv.

The documented arrangement has one host running the game while other players join through their browsers. The checkout listing presents the title as a standalone digital game for the host; it does not state that each participant must purchase a copy.
Is a video call mandatory?
No for a group in one room. It is the practical way to combine remote participants with the host’s game screen, but local players can use ordinary room-code play without a call.
Is an online subscription required?
The publisher’s FAQ says its in-game matchmaking does not require an additional subscription after purchase. Console players may still need the subscription required by their console platform’s online services.
How many people can join?
The official product page lists one to eight players. Stay within that published player limit when planning the lobby.
