To host a Trepidation server, deploy the matching Forge 1.12.2 server pack, give it at least 5–6GB of RAM, accept the Minecraft EULA, configure server.properties, open the server port, and make every player install the identical client release. TREPIDATION-1.3.1 is the latest listed release as of June 23, 2026. You can run it on your own computer or VPS, or rent managed hosting that installs Forge for you.
What a Trepidation server runs
Trepidation is a story-driven horror roguelite Minecraft modpack by CalaMariGold. A run begins in the Nether, progresses upward through distinct dimensions, and ends with an attempt to defeat the Ender Dragon before the timer expires. The server and every client must use the same Minecraft version, Forge build, and modpack release or the connection will fail.

Choose between self-hosting and managed hosting
Self-hosting
Self-hosting means you download the server pack, run it on a home computer or VPS, and handle networking, Java, updates, backups, and troubleshooting. It gives you control over files and configuration and can be inexpensive if you already have suitable hardware. The trade-off is that your machine must remain online and reachable, and you are responsible for firewall and router configuration.

Managed hosting
A managed host supplies an always-on machine and a control panel. Installation is usually a modpack selection rather than a manual file operation, and the provider handles the basic network endpoint. You still need to match client versions, understand the plan’s RAM and CPU allocation, and maintain your world and configuration.

Prices, coupons, hardware allocations, and availability can change. Before paying, verify that the plan supports Minecraft 1.12.2, the exact Trepidation release you intend to run, the guaranteed memory allocation, backup controls, region, and export options.
How much RAM and hardware do you need?
The Trepidation project page says, “Allocate 5-6GB RAM.” That is the pack’s published baseline, not a universal performance guarantee. A practical starting point is a 6GB allocation for a small private group. Game Host Bros also recommends at least 6GB and lists 10GB and 14GB tiers for larger or busier communities.
- 6GB: sensible starting allocation for a small group, provided the host has adequate CPU speed and fast storage.
- 10GB: a reasonable upgrade target when more players explore simultaneously or the world generates many new chunks.
- 14GB: a published larger-community tier; choose it only when your player count and exploration load justify the additional cost.
Memory alone does not determine tick rate. CPU speed, storage latency, and chunk generation can matter just as much in a heavily modded world. Game Host Bros specifically recommends pre-generating the world to reduce exploration-related lag spikes. No independent benchmark or standardized player-capacity study establishes how many players a Trepidation server can support, so treat capacity as environment-dependent.
Prepare a self-hosted machine or VPS
Hardware and network checklist
- Reserve at least 6GB of RAM for the server process, leaving additional memory for the operating system and other services.
- Use fast storage with enough free space for the server files, logs, backups, and world growth. The pack’s researched guidance does not establish a fixed disk size.
- Use a stable wired connection where possible. Players connect to the address and port exposed by your host, so an intermittently sleeping computer is unsuitable for an always-on server.
- Confirm that you can change the host firewall and, for a home connection, forward the Minecraft server port on the router.
- Install the Java/runtime version required by the exact server-pack release rather than assuming that a version from another Minecraft installation is correct.
Keep the versions aligned
Download the matching Trepidation server pack from the project’s CurseForge files. Record the Minecraft version, Forge version, and pack version before extracting anything. Download the same client pack release for each player. Version alignment is the first check whenever a client reports missing mods, mismatched mod lists, or an incompatible Forge handshake.

Install and start the server step by step
- Create a dedicated directory. Make a new folder used only for this Trepidation instance. Keeping the world, configuration, logs, and mods together makes backups and later migration safer.
- Download the matching server pack. Select the server-pack file corresponding to the client release you will use. For the current listing, that means TREPIDATION-1.3.1 for Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge.
- Extract the archive. Unpack all files into the dedicated directory rather than running the server from inside the ZIP file. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the pack.
- Install the required Java runtime. The v0.5.8.1 server-pack page says Java 21 or newer is required to launch the pack but not the server. That statement is release-specific and can differ from 1.3.1, so check the note attached to the exact release you deploy. If the pack includes a launcher script, use that script after installing the documented runtime.
- Start the server once. Run the launch script or server launcher included in the pack from the server directory. The first run creates the world and configuration files and normally stops or pauses while requesting EULA acceptance.
- Accept the EULA. Open the generated
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, change the acceptance value to the required affirmative setting, save the file, and start the server again. Do not delete the file or repeatedly restart before saving it; the server will continue to stop at the same check. - Wait for a complete startup. Treat the server as ready only after the console reports that it has finished loading and is listening for connections. The first startup can take longer while Forge and the modpack build caches.
- Stop it cleanly before editing or copying files. Use the console’s stop command or the hosting panel’s stop control. Avoid killing the process while the world is saving because an interrupted write can damage the world.
Configure server.properties for your group
After the first successful start, stop the server and edit server.properties. The exact values depend on your group, but these are the settings that directly affect access and play style:
- Difficulty: select the difficulty appropriate for your group. Horror progression and combat are affected by the chosen setting.
- Online mode: keep authentication enabled for a normal internet server. Change it only when you understand the security and account-authentication consequences.
- View distance: lower it if CPU or memory pressure appears during exploration; raise it only when the host has headroom.
- Maximum players: set a limit that matches your intended group and the resources you can actually provide. A high slot number does not create capacity.
- Server name and message: set an identifiable name and connection message so players know which release they are joining.
Save the file while the server is stopped, then start it and watch the console for configuration or mod-loading errors. Change one setting at a time when troubleshooting so you can identify which change affected startup or performance.
Make the server reachable
Home network
- Allow the Java/server process through the operating system firewall, or create an inbound rule for the port configured in
server.properties. - Forward that same port from the router to the computer’s local network address. Reserve the computer’s local address in the router so the forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- Test from outside the home network, such as through a friend’s connection. Testing only from the host’s own computer can produce a false result because some routers do not support internal loopback.
- Give players the public address and port privately. Do not publish a home IP address in a public channel unless you accept the associated exposure.
VPS or managed host
On a VPS, open the configured port in the provider firewall and the operating system firewall. A managed host normally supplies an address and port in its panel; use the endpoint shown there rather than guessing a default. If a host provides a region choice, select a location that minimizes latency for most players.
Join the server with a matching client
- Install the exact Trepidation client release, Minecraft 1.12.2, and the matching Forge version.
- Launch that profile once locally so the client creates its files and completes any initial setup.
- In Minecraft’s multiplayer screen, add the server address and port supplied by the host.
- Join only after the server console reports a completed startup.
If the client reports missing mods or a mismatched mod list, compare the client and server pack filenames and Forge versions before changing network settings. If the connection times out, check the host firewall, router forwarding, public address, and whether the server process is still running.
Renting a Trepidation server
Yes. Managed hosting is the simplest option when you do not want to maintain Java, port forwarding, or an always-on home machine. The providers above advertise Trepidation-specific workflows, but their claims are not independent performance measurements.

Akliz workflow
Akliz describes itself as an official Trepidation hosting partner. Its published process is to install Trepidation on a new server in Command Center, start the server, install the same modpack version through CurseForge, and connect. The page advertises a recommended plan at $15 per month and a 20% first-month coupon. Both the price and promotion are subject to change, and the page does not establish a universal player capacity.
CreeperHost resources
CreeperHost lists Trepidation-1.3.1 with a 4,000MB minimum RAM figure, a minimum CPU specification of 2 × 4.5GHz, and 5GB minimum SSD. Those are provider specifications for its listed product, not a benchmark of tick performance. Confirm whether the tier you select includes backups, the desired region, and an upgrade path.
MintServers deployment
MintServers says Trepidation is preinstalled for Forge on Minecraft 1.12.2 and recommends 6GB or more for modded operation. It describes automatic server creation followed by sharing the server address. Its pages also advertise unlimited slots and RAM and multiple hardware tiers; treat those as vendor claims and verify the exact limits and allocation in the plan terms.
Game Host Bros deployment
Game Host Bros offers one-click Forge 1.12.2 deployment, recommends at least 6GB RAM, and lists a 6GB plan at $11.99 per month. The published setup sequence is to order a plan, open the panel, select the modpack, install it, and connect. It also recommends pre-generating the world to reduce exploration lag spikes.

Reduce lag during exploration
New chunk generation is a common source of temporary lag in a large modded world. Pre-generate the playable area before inviting the group if your chosen host provides a safe tool or if you are comfortable using the pack’s supported generation method. Do this on a copy first, because generation can consume substantial CPU, storage, and time.
Keep view distance conservative while diagnosing performance. If the server remains slow, monitor memory usage, CPU saturation, storage latency, and the console log rather than increasing RAM automatically. More memory cannot fix a CPU bottleneck or a slow disk.
Backups, updates, and recovery
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration files to separate storage, and label the backup with the Trepidation and Forge versions. The available guidance does not prescribe a universal backup interval, so choose one that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. Keep at least one copy outside the server machine or provider account.

Test updates on a copy
Never apply a modpack or Forge update directly to the only copy of a world. Duplicate the server directory, restore a recent backup into the duplicate, and test startup and player connection there. Only replace the live instance after the copy loads successfully and the group accepts the version change.
Recover from a failed start
- Stop the server and preserve the latest logs before deleting or replacing files.
- Confirm that the Java/runtime version matches the exact release note for the server pack.
- Compare the server pack and client pack versions and verify that no files were partially extracted.
- Restore the last known-good world and configuration backup if the failure followed an update.
- Change one variable at a time and restart, recording the result.
Common connection and performance problems
“Incompatible mod list” or Forge handshake failure
Install the same Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge, and Trepidation release on both sides. A client copied from a different pack version can retain old mods even when its launcher profile appears correct, so reinstall or replace the entire client instance when necessary.

Server stops immediately
Check EULA acceptance, the Java requirement for the exact release, and the first error in the console log. Do not rely on the v0.5.8.1 Java 21 note as a guarantee for every later pack version; runtime requirements are version-specific.
Players cannot connect from outside the host
Verify that the process is running, the configured port is open in both host and router firewalls, and players are using the public address rather than the server computer’s private LAN address. A managed host’s panel may show a non-default port, which must be included in the connection entry.

Exploration causes severe stutter
Reduce view distance, check CPU and storage pressure, and pre-generate the intended area on a test copy. Move to a higher-memory tier only after checking those factors; published recommendations identify memory starting points but do not guarantee a particular tick rate.
Recommended starting plan
For a private group, begin with the current matching server pack, a 6GB allocation, fast storage, conservative view distance, and a tested backup. A self-hosted machine is appropriate when you can keep it online and configure networking. Choose managed hosting when you prefer one-click Forge deployment and a provider-managed endpoint. Increase resources only when observed player count, simultaneous exploration, or measured CPU and memory pressure requires it.
