To host Towards Rocket Science for friends, use the pack’s matching Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server pack, not the regular client download. CurseForge currently lists Towards-Rocket-Science-2.7.7.zip as the latest release (October 28, 2025) and provides a corresponding server.zip in its “Minecraft 1.12 Server Packs” section. You can run that server on your own machine or choose a managed host that supports the pack.

The reliable order is: lock the pack and Forge versions, download the matching server pack, install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime, start once and accept the EULA, set memory deliberately, configure network access, and make a tested backup before changing anything.

What Towards Rocket Science requires

Towards Rocket Science is a large, progression-based Forge pack built around engineering and space travel. Its project description puts the long-term objective plainly: “With this modpack you will explore immersive engineering, research and build rockets, travel to other planets and build a space station! Your goal is to terraform the moon – but it will be a long journey…”

The current project listing targets Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. CurseForge reported 668,525 downloads on October 15, 2026, and lists the project’s last update as October 28, 2025. Those figures describe the project page, not a server-performance guarantee.

The listed mod set includes Advanced Rocketry, Immersive Engineering, Immersive Petroleum, Immersive Tech, Refined Storage, Minecolonies 1.12.2 beta, Tektopia, BuildCraft and quality-of-life additions. OptiFine is recommended for client visuals, but a visual-only client mod should not be copied to a dedicated server unless it is present in the supplied server files.

Self-hosted or managed hosting?

Both approaches can run the same world and modpack. The difference is who handles the operating system, network exposure and recovery work.

Decision area Self-hosted machine Managed host
Setup work Install Java and Forge, extract the server pack, accept the EULA and configure the firewall. Select a supported pack and plan in a hosting panel.
Network exposure You handle the firewall, router and the default Minecraft port, 25565. The provider supplies a public endpoint.
Control Full filesystem and configuration access. Panel-based controls; backups and provider limits differ by service.
Cost pattern Uses an existing computer or incurs hardware and electricity costs. Uses a recurring hosting subscription.
Failure recovery You create, store and test backups. You must verify the provider’s backup and restore features before buying.

Self-hosting is appropriate when you already have a reliable computer, can manage Java and router settings, and want unrestricted access to files. Managed hosting is simpler when you do not want to expose a home network or maintain the operating system. Neither option removes the need to keep client versions synchronized.

Self-hosting: complete setup procedure

1. Lock every version before installing

Choose the exact Towards Rocket Science release you intend to run. For the current listing, that is 2.7.7, but a later release may exist when you install. Record the pack version, Minecraft version and Forge version in a note that you can send to every player.

Install the Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge profile that the selected pack expects. Do not let one player use a newer Minecraft version or a different Forge build simply because the launcher offers it. Forge mods are sensitive to both the game version and the loader version.

2. Download the matching server pack

Open the Towards Rocket Science project’s Files area on CurseForge and select the server.zip listed under Minecraft 1.12 Server Packs for the same release as your clients. Extract it into a new, dedicated server directory.

The ordinary client ZIP is not a substitute for the server pack. A client archive can contain visual or client-only files that a dedicated server neither needs nor can load. Start from the supplied server archive so its configuration and server-side mod selection remain intact.

3. Install the correct Java runtime

Minecraft’s official server guidance requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment to launch the server JAR. Forge’s documentation for this 1.12 generation specifies Java 8 and a 64-bit JVM.

  • Confirm that the machine is running a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit Java 8 runtime.
  • Check which Java executable your startup script actually calls; having another Java version installed does not guarantee that the script uses Java 8.
  • Keep the Java installation path stable so updates do not silently point the script at a different runtime.

If the console reports an unsupported class version, a missing Java executable or an immediate crash before Forge loads, verify the Java version and architecture before changing mod files.

4. Start once and accept the EULA

Run the startup script or Forge server JAR supplied by the pack. The first launch normally creates configuration and world files. Forge documents that the process will stop until you edit eula.txt and change the acceptance value to agree to Minecraft’s EULA.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch the supplied server starter once.
  2. Wait for the process to create eula.txt and then stop.
  3. Open eula.txt, read the linked EULA, and change the setting to accept it only if you agree.
  4. Start the server again and wait for a normal “done” state in the console before connecting.

Do not repeatedly kill the process during first startup. Forge may need time to generate registries, configurations and the initial world.

5. Set memory deliberately

Large modpacks need more memory than a vanilla server, but there is no published independent RAM benchmark or guaranteed minimum for Towards Rocket Science. A commercial hosting guide describes 8–10 GB as a typical allocation for heavy packs and advertises 16 GB as its recommended plan size for optimal performance. Treat both as provider guidance, not as a measured requirement for this pack.

Minecraft Dungeons: Standard Edition – Windows 10 [Digital Code]
  • Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

Begin with a conservative heap allocation that leaves memory for the operating system and other services. Then observe:

  • garbage-collection pauses and whether they coincide with freezes;
  • tick-time warnings or delayed block and machine updates;
  • how memory behaves while several players explore, generate chunks and use automation;
  • whether the operating system starts swapping or runs out of available memory.

Adding RAM cannot fix every lag problem. Chunk generation, entity counts, automation networks and a slow disk can all affect tick time. Increase the heap only when monitoring shows that the server is genuinely constrained and the machine has capacity to spare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Configure local and internet access

Players on the same home network can usually connect through the server computer’s private address. Friends outside that network require router and firewall configuration. Minecraft’s official guidance identifies Java’s default port as 25565.

  1. Allow the Java server process through the host operating system’s firewall.
  2. Forward only the required TCP port from the router to the server computer’s fixed local address.
  3. Protect the router and operating-system administrator accounts with strong, unique credentials.
  4. Test from a second network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than testing only from inside the same LAN.

Do not expose additional administration ports just to make the game connection work. If the external test fails, check the router’s forwarding rule, the server’s private address, the firewall profile and whether your internet provider places the connection behind carrier-grade NAT.

7. Make a recovery copy before inviting players

Stop the server cleanly before copying files. Keep the world directory, server configuration and a known-good copy of the exact pack archive together. Store at least one backup away from the live server machine.

Test a restore on a separate directory before you rely on a backup. A backup that has never been opened is only an assumption. Make another backup immediately before changing the pack version, Forge version or major configuration.

8. Give every player a precise client checklist

Each player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge version and Towards Rocket Science release. Send the exact version number rather than telling friends to install “the latest” pack, because a new client release can change the mod list while your server remains on the older files.

  • Install Minecraft 1.12.2.
  • Use the Forge profile required by the selected pack release.
  • Install the identical Towards Rocket Science pack version.
  • Do not add OptiFine or other client visual mods to the server directory.
  • Remove stray mods that are not in the matching client profile if the server reports a mod-list mismatch.

Managed hosting: the shorter route

CurseForge’s hosted-server flow

CurseForge’s hosted-server support documentation says a modpack must have a matching server pack. Its documented process is:

  1. Choose the modpack that has the matching server pack.
  2. Select a hosting plan.
  3. Choose a server region.
  4. Enter the server details.
  5. Complete payment through the hosted-service checkout.

After provisioning, the owner can share a direct link or import code so friends add the server profile to their CurseForge app. This avoids manual file uploads and home-router port forwarding, but you still need to confirm the host supports the specific Towards Rocket Science release you want.

A concrete installation example

GhostCap documents a one-click installation for this project. In its game panel, open Modpacks, search for CurseForge project ID 1016279, install the pack and start the server. Its page lists a 16 GB RAM plan as the minimum recommendation for optimal performance. That is the provider’s own planning guidance, not an independent test or a guaranteed requirement.

Before paying any managed host, verify the exact pack version, server-pack availability, region, backup schedule, restore process, file access and cancellation terms. Also confirm whether the plan’s advertised memory is dedicated to your instance and whether automated backups consume storage or incur a separate limit.

Common failures and fixes

The server stops immediately

  • Read the first error in the console, not only the final shutdown line.
  • Confirm Java 8 and a 64-bit JVM are being used by the startup script.
  • Check that the server archive was fully extracted and that the Forge files remain together.
  • Start with the original server files before adding any optional mods or custom settings.

The console asks for the EULA repeatedly

The server cannot find an accepted eula.txt, or the file is being written in a different working directory. Stop the process, locate the file in the directory from which the server actually runs, accept the EULA there if you agree, and launch the same startup script again.

Clients report missing or extra mods

This almost always indicates that the client and server are not on the same release or Forge profile. Compare the exact pack filename, Minecraft version and Forge version. Do not solve the error by copying the entire client mods folder onto the server; use the supplied server pack as the authority for server-side files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Friends cannot connect from outside the house

First test locally. If local players can join but remote players cannot, recheck port 25565 forwarding, the server computer’s private address and the firewall rule. Test from a genuinely separate network. If the router has no public address because of carrier-grade NAT, a normal port-forwarding rule may not be sufficient; a managed host avoids that home-network dependency.

Lag appears after exploration or automation

Record when the lag occurs and watch tick time and garbage-collection pauses. Exploration can generate many new chunks, while colonies, machines, entities and storage networks can add ongoing work. Reduce simultaneous chunk generation, avoid unnecessary loaded areas and make changes one at a time so you can identify the cause. Do not assume that allocating all available RAM will improve tick performance.

An update breaks the world

Stop the server, restore the last known-good world and configuration backup, and return to the exact pack archive that created it. Do not test an update on the only copy of a world. Keep old backups until the new version has been running successfully for a meaningful period.

Operating the server safely

Use a change record

Write down the pack version, Forge version, Java version, memory setting and date of every change. When a player reports a problem, you can determine whether it began after an update instead of guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop cleanly

Use the server’s normal stop command or panel control. Abrupt power loss can leave world data incomplete and can make a later diagnosis much harder. Schedule maintenance when nobody is building or exploring.

Separate client cosmetics from server content

OptiFine is recommended by the project for visuals, but visual enhancements belong on clients unless the server pack explicitly includes them. Keeping client-only files out of the dedicated server reduces startup errors and mod-list conflicts.

Plan for the pack’s progression

Decide whether the group will follow the intended chapters. Early play focuses on resource gathering, colonies and basic processing; industrial systems arrive later; Refined Storage bridges the midgame; Advanced Rocketry then drives satellites, asteroid mining, warp travel, gas mining and lunar terraforming. Setting expectations prevents a new player from assuming that rockets or terraforming are available immediately.

Which hosting method should you choose?

Choose self-hosting if you want complete filesystem control, already have a suitable always-on machine and are comfortable managing Java, backups and port 25565. Choose managed hosting if you prefer a panel, want to avoid router configuration and accept a recurring subscription and provider limits. In either case, the non-negotiable requirement is version matching: the server and every client must use the same Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge profile and the same Towards Rocket Science release.
