To host a Team Fortress 2 server yourself, install the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD using app ID 232250, then launch the Source server for the tf game with a map and player-slot limit. For a LAN game, the Source command reference documents sv_lan 1. For friends outside your network, firewall and network configuration matter; the available references do not establish a universal port-forwarding recipe or confirm that Steam Datagram Relay bypasses this setup for TF2.
What you need to know before you start
A TF2 dedicated server is separate from the game client. The server files are installed through SteamCMD, and the Source Dedicated Server is launched with the tf game selected. Think of setup as three separate tasks: install the dedicated-server files, start a server process with the TF2 game and a map selected, then make the server reachable to the people who should join. Each can succeed or fail independently. For example, SteamCMD may complete the installation even though the later launch command uses a map name your installation does not recognize; similarly, a server may start for local testing without being reachable over the internet.

Starting a map is a useful milestone, not a complete public-server configuration. It indicates that the command was accepted far enough to start the server process; it does not establish that the server is visible to people outside the local network, that all intended players can connect, or that a chosen slot limit will perform well on your hardware.
Do not treat this as a complete production configuration. The cited command reference supports the options shown, but does not establish all current TF2-specific server settings, account requirements, recommended launch flags, or an ideal slot count.

LAN-only play
The Source command reference describes sv_lan 1 as restricting availability to the local area network. Use it when the intended players are on the same local network. It is not the setting to rely on when people need to join from outside that network.
The LAN choice is about who should be able to reach the server, not about whether you have installed a dedicated server correctly. If local players are the only audience, a LAN-restricted setup matches that goal. If even one intended player is connecting from another network, you need to address internet reachability instead; changing a launch map or player-slot option does not settle that network question.
Players connecting over the internet
An internet-facing server needs an appropriate network path from outside players to the machine running it. What Steam Networking does—and does not establish for TF2
Valve’s networking reference describes Steam Datagram Relay as a way for supported games to allow connections without conventional port forwarding. Its discussion says TF2-branch games received support in an update dated February 18, 2025, but the examples it lists are Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. It does not explicitly name Team Fortress 2. That reference is not enough to promise that relay support removes the need for network configuration on a TF2 server.
