To host a Subnautica Nitrox server, install a current Nitrox release that matches your Subnautica build, open NitroxLauncher as Administrator, choose Server, and select Start Server. Players on the same computer can connect to 127.0.0.1 (localhost). Internet players need a route to the host over UDP port 11000, normally through router port forwarding or a VPN/tunnel, plus firewall rules for Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe.
What you need before hosting
Nitrox hosting is built around an existing Subnautica installation and the Nitrox launcher. The normal desktop workflow is simplest on Windows because the launcher starts the server and displays the connection information players need. A headless Linux or other operating-system setup is possible with third-party Docker or Podman images, but that route has additional path, volume, image-version and architecture concerns.

Use a current public Nitrox release that supports the Subnautica build installed on the host. The client and server should come from the same Nitrox release. If one side is updated while the other remains on an older release, clients may fail to join or behave unpredictably.
Nitrox’s development documentation describes build instructions for contributors, not as a normal installation procedure. Its main development branch targets the latest Subnautica code, so a source build should not be treated as a universal substitute for the current public release.

A machine that can remain online
The host must keep the Nitrox server process running while people play. The official material does not publish a supported minimum CPU, RAM or bandwidth requirement, and it does not publish an authoritative player-capacity number. Do not size a machine around an unsourced “maximum players” figure. Start with the supported release, watch CPU, memory and network use during your own sessions, and reduce background load if the server becomes unstable.
Network and account details
- Know whether players will connect from the same computer, your local network or the wider Internet.
- Have access to the router if Internet players will connect directly.
- Be able to create firewall exceptions on the host computer.
- Choose a server password and, if you will administer the world remotely, an admin password. The server window exposes both values and other connection details while it is running.
Start a Nitrox server with the launcher
For the standard setup, the launcher is the authoritative starting point. Follow these steps on the computer that contains Subnautica.
- Close any running Nitrox client or server instance so that only one server process will bind the game port.
- Open
NitroxLauncherwith administrator privileges. In Windows, right-click the launcher and choose Run as administrator. Administrative rights allow the launcher and server to create or use the files and network rules they need. - In the launcher, select Server rather than the client option.
- Select Start Server. Wait for the server window to finish starting before asking anyone to connect.
- Read the information printed in the server window. It reports the game mode, server password, admin password, the local address and the address intended for players who arrive through port forwarding.
- Leave that server window open. Closing it stops the server, and a sleeping or shut-down host is not reachable.
Do not guess an address from another computer. Give each player the address shown by the running server, using the address appropriate to that player’s network location.
Connect from the host computer or a local network
The host’s own client
If you are playing on the same computer that runs the server, use Nitrox’s My server option and connect to 127.0.0.1 or localhost. This loopback address never leaves the machine, so it does not depend on the router’s public address.
Players on the same LAN
A player on the same home or office network should use the host’s private address shown by the server, not the public Internet address. The host firewall must permit the Nitrox server traffic on the network profile being used. A private address commonly changes when the router renews its DHCP lease, so check the server window again if a previously working LAN connection stops working.

Testing locally before opening Internet access isolates problems. First prove that the host can connect through loopback, then test another device on the LAN, and only after that test an external connection.

Make the server reachable over the Internet
Nitrox uses UDP port 11000. Internet hosting requires that traffic sent to UDP 11000 reach the computer running the server. The two usual methods are a router port-forwarding rule or a VPN/tunnel that gives friends a private route to the host.
Option 1: Forward UDP 11000 on the router
- Give the host computer a stable private address. A DHCP reservation in the router is preferable to relying on a temporary address, because the forwarding rule must always target the current server machine.
- Open the router’s administration interface and find its port-forwarding, NAT or virtual-server section. Labels differ by model.
- Create a rule for UDP, external port
11000, forwarding to the host’s private IP address and internal port11000. - Save or apply the rule. Some routers require a restart; others apply it immediately.
- Start the Nitrox server and use the externally reachable address printed in the server window when you tell remote players how to join.
- Keep the host firewall configuration in place and test from a network outside your home, such as a friend’s connection or a mobile hotspot. Testing from inside the same router can produce misleading results because some routers do not support NAT loopback.
Forward only the protocol and port Nitrox requires. A TCP-only rule does not replace the UDP rule. The server must also be running at the time of the test; a forwarding rule cannot make an inactive process reachable.
Allow the programs through the host firewall
The official hosting guidance calls out firewall exceptions for Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. Add or confirm rules for those programs on the host, and permit the relevant network profile. If Windows asks whether to allow the application when you first start it, approve the appropriate private or trusted network access rather than dismissing the prompt.
If you use a stricter firewall, create an inbound rule for UDP 11000 in addition to program-based exceptions. Keep the scope as narrow as your network allows and remove temporary rules you no longer need.

Option 2: Use a VPN or tunnel
If the router cannot accept inbound forwarding, or your Internet provider places you behind a carrier-grade NAT, a VPN or tunneling service can provide an alternate path. A commonly used example is Hamachi, but the important requirement is a working private route between every player and the host. Players then use the VPN address supplied by the server or the VPN network rather than the home’s public address.
All participants must join the same VPN network, and the host firewall still has to allow Nitrox traffic on the VPN adapter. A tunnel does not remove the need to run the server or resolve local firewall conflicts; it changes how packets reach the host.
Headless hosting with Docker or Podman
Container hosting is an optional, third-party approach for people who want a server without keeping the graphical launcher open. It is not the same as the official Windows launcher workflow. Container images can change their tags, defaults, supported architectures and internal paths, so read the image’s current documentation before deploying or upgrading.
What a container deployment must provide
- The game installation: mount the real Subnautica installation into the container. A container cannot start Nitrox if the mounted directory is empty or points to a different game build.
- The installation-path setting: the spidegames image documents
SUBNAUTICA_INSTALLATION_PATHas required. Set it to the path as seen inside the container, not merely the path on the host. - Persistent Nitrox data: mount the Nitrox working/configuration location and save-game directory to host storage. Without persistent volumes, a recreated container can lose settings and worlds that existed only in its writable layer.
- Published networking: publish UDP port
11000from the container to the host. One third-party example publishes both11000/udpand11000/tcp, but the documented Nitrox requirement is UDP; do not assume every image needs the same additional mapping. - A compatible architecture: verify that the image supports the CPU architecture and operating system of the host before pulling it.
Container deployment sequence
- Install Docker or Podman on a supported host and confirm that the service can run containers.
- Choose an image whose Nitrox release and Subnautica compatibility match your clients. Pin a documented image tag rather than blindly using an unversioned moving tag.
- Identify the host path of the complete Subnautica installation and the host directories that will store Nitrox configuration and saves.
- Read the image documentation for its internal mount points. Bind-mount the game directory readably where required, and mount configuration and save directories to persistent storage.
- Set
SUBNAUTICA_INSTALLATION_PATHwhen the selected image requires it, using the container-visible path. - Publish UDP 11000 and start the container. Check its logs for path, permission, version and port-binding errors.
- Apply the same router forwarding or VPN plan used for a non-container server, targeting the physical host that publishes the container port.
- Stop and recreate the container as a test. Confirm that the world, passwords and settings remain after the restart; if they do not, a required directory is still ephemeral.
Platform claims and their limits
The Cuteminded image reports testing on Ubuntu 24.04 x64, Windows 11 x64, macOS Tahoe ARM64 and Raspberry Pi OS 13 on Raspberry Pi 4 hardware. Those are the publisher’s tested environments for that image, not a universal guarantee for every Nitrox container. Confirm the current image tag, base operating system, CPU architecture, mount paths and port behavior before relying on a particular platform.

Neither approach has an authoritative, published player-count or performance advantage. Choose the launcher for the fewest moving parts, or a container when unattended operation, isolation and host-level management justify the extra configuration.

Troubleshoot connection failures
Friends time out, but the server appears to run
- Confirm the server process is still running and is listening on the expected port.
- Check that the router rule is UDP, uses external and internal port
11000, and targets the host’s current private address. - Confirm that the host firewall allows
Subnautica.exeandNitroxServer-Subnautica.exe, or has an inbound UDP 11000 rule. - Give friends the externally reachable address shown by the server, not
127.0.0.1and not an outdated private address. - Test from a genuinely external network. A successful test from the host itself proves only local loopback access.
Local play works, remote play fails
This pattern points first to router, NAT, firewall or VPN reachability rather than the Nitrox world. Recheck the forwarding destination, the external address and the UDP rule. If your provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; use a VPN/tunnel or a hosted machine with an inbound UDP-capable network.
A LAN player cannot connect
Use the host’s private address shown in the server window and verify that the firewall permits the connection on the current network profile. Make sure both devices are actually on the same LAN or VPN segment. Guest Wi-Fi networks commonly isolate clients, preventing one device from reaching another even when both have Internet access.
The container says it cannot find Subnautica
Inspect the mount and the value of SUBNAUTICA_INSTALLATION_PATH. The path must identify the complete game installation as it appears inside the container. Also verify permissions and that the mounted build is the one supported by the Nitrox release.
Worlds or settings disappear after a container restart
Move the Nitrox working/configuration data and saves to persistent host directories or named volumes. Recreating a container removes data left only in its temporary writable layer. After changing mounts, create a test world, restart the container and confirm that the world and settings return.
The client and server report a version mismatch
Update the client and server together and check that both support the installed Subnautica build. Do not mix a development build, an older public release and a container image with a different embedded version. The Nitrox documentation’s note that its main branch follows the latest game code is another reason to verify compatibility rather than assuming every build can connect.

Keep the server reliable and secure
Use a stable address
A DHCP reservation prevents the router’s forwarding rule from silently pointing at a different device after a lease change. If you cannot reserve an address, inspect the server window and router rule whenever the host reconnects to the network.

Protect passwords and administrative access
Share the server password only with intended players. Treat the admin password separately and do not post it in a public chat. If a password is exposed, stop the server, change it in the server configuration or launcher workflow available to your release, and restart before inviting players again.
Back up saves before upgrades
Copy the Nitrox save directory before changing the Nitrox release, Subnautica build or container image. For containers, back up the host directories or named volumes that hold saves and configuration. A backup gives you a recovery point if a version change or failed mount starts the server with an empty world.
Document the working network path
Record whether players use loopback, a private LAN address, a public forwarded address or a VPN address. Note the host’s private IP, the router’s UDP 11000 rule and the firewall exceptions. This short record makes future troubleshooting much faster when an address or network profile changes.
What Nitrox hosting does not officially specify
The available official hosting material identifies the launch procedure, connection-address behavior, firewall exceptions and UDP port 11000. It does not establish a supported maximum player count or minimum CPU, RAM or bandwidth specification. Any number presented as a guaranteed capacity would therefore be an unsupported estimate. Plan conservatively, observe the behavior of your own world and hardware, and treat third-party container test matrices as image-specific rather than as universal Nitrox requirements.
