Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To host the current SteamPunk [LPS] server, select one exact pack release—currently SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 on Forge—install its matching server distribution in a clean directory, launch it once to generate files, accept the EULA, configure access, and give every player an identical client profile. Start with 6–8 GB of RAM for one to five players, or 10–12 GB for five to 15 players, then adjust after monitoring memory and tick performance.
What SteamPunk [LPS] is and which version to host

The current branch identified for this guide is SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19, released for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Forge on May 20, 2026. The project also has a separate SteamPunk 1.19.2 v25 HF branch. Those are different software targets, not interchangeable updates. A world, client profile, configuration set, or mod list made for one branch should not be mixed with the other.
| Branch | Minecraft version | Loader | Release information | Use with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current branch covered here | 1.20.1 | Forge | SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19, dated May 20, 2026 | A 1.20.1 Forge client and the matching server distribution |
| Separate legacy branch | 1.19.2 | Use the loader specified by that release | SteamPunk 1.19.2 v25 HF | Only clients and server files from the 1.19.2 branch |
Before downloading anything, write down the pack name, release number, Minecraft version, and Forge version shown for the release you chose. This small record prevents the most common setup error: installing a server for one branch while players install the other.

Choose self-hosting or a managed server
Self-hosting is appropriate when you want direct control over files, worlds, configuration, and backups, especially for a local test or a small group on the same network. Friends connecting from outside your home need a reachable public address, a forwarded port, and firewall rules. A managed host removes much of that network administration and may install the pack or provide an updater, but you trade some file-system control for a recurring bill and the host’s limits.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| File and configuration control | Complete control over server files, configs, logs, worlds, and Java settings | Usually available through a panel or file manager, subject to provider policies |
| Initial setup | You install Forge, unpack the server distribution, configure the network, and maintain Java and backups | The provider may offer pack-specific installation or an automated importer |
| RAM and CPU | Limited by the computer and operating system you supply | Selected from the host’s plans; advertised allocations are not laboratory performance results |
| Backups and restore | You must create, verify, and store your own restorable copies | Some plans include scheduled backups or snapshots; confirm retention and restore scope |
| Latency and location | Depends on your home upload connection and the location of the host computer | You can usually choose a data-center region, subject to availability |
| Updates | You control when a release is tested and promoted | A panel or updater may simplify imports, but you still need a world backup and compatibility check |
| Network protection | You configure the firewall, port forwarding, and any mitigation yourself | The provider may include network filtering or DDoS protection; verify exactly what is covered |
| Recurring cost | No hosting fee, but electricity, hardware, storage, and administration are yours | Monthly cost varies by RAM, CPU, region, backup features, and contract terms |
Providers identified as advertising SteamPunk [LPS] installation or related modpack tooling include DedicatedMinecraft.host, OuiHeberg, Crafty Servers, and StickyPiston. Their current prices, uptime, regions, resource policies, and affiliate terms need to be checked on the provider’s own site before purchase. Do not treat a plan’s RAM number as proof of a particular player count or tick rate.

SteamPunk [LPS] is a large, content-heavy modpack, so it requires substantially more memory and storage than a vanilla server. DedicatedMinecraft.host recommends 6–8 GB of RAM for one to five players and 10–12 GB for five to 15 players. OuiHeberg advises starting with at least 6 GB. These are provider recommendations, not independent benchmark measurements.
| Concurrent players | Practical starting allocation | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | 6–8 GB RAM | Range recommended by DedicatedMinecraft.host for this pack category |
| 5–15 | 10–12 GB RAM | Range recommended by DedicatedMinecraft.host; actual need depends on exploration, dimensions, view distance, and other activity |
| Any group | At least 6 GB as an initial floor | OuiHeberg’s starting guidance; not a guarantee of smooth performance |
Crafty Servers lists 6, 8, 12, and 16 GB plans and says it installs the matching server pack automatically. That simplifies deployment, but the plan size still does not establish how many players your particular world can sustain.
Leave headroom for the operating system and other services instead of assigning every available gigabyte to Java. Watch the server console and host metrics after players explore new terrain, enter dimensions, or activate large machines. Rising memory pressure, frequent garbage-collection pauses, long tick times, or repeated “can’t keep up” warnings indicate that you should first reduce load and investigate the cause, then consider adding RAM or CPU capacity.
Keep enough disk space for the live world, region files generated during exploration, logs, configuration backups, and at least one complete rollback copy. The pack’s exact disk requirement is not stated, so do not rely on a single advertised storage figure; check free space before updates and after major exploration sessions.

Use the release’s named server pack
Prefer the official server-pack archive attached to the exact SteamPunk release you selected. A normal CurseForge client installation is not automatically a complete server. Client archives can contain client-only files, omit server launch material, or include a layout that assumes a launcher will assemble the instance.
- Open the project’s release list and select either SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 or the separate 1.19.2 v25 HF branch.
- Confirm the Minecraft version, Forge version, release number, and date before downloading.
- Choose the file explicitly identified as the server distribution or server pack, if one is provided.
- Save the original archive unchanged and record its filename and release details in a text note.
If the release supplies a README or launch script, treat it as authoritative for that release. Do not replace its Forge files with a newer loader merely because a newer Forge build exists; the mod set and configuration may depend on the specified build.

Install SteamPunk [LPS] on a clean server directory
1. Prepare the machine
- Use a machine with enough RAM for the player count and leave operating-system headroom.
- Install the Java version required by the selected Minecraft and Forge release, following the pack or Forge documentation.
- Create a dedicated directory used only by this server. Avoid placing it inside a client launcher’s managed instance directory.
- Give the account running the server permission to read and write the directory, including world, config, logs, and libraries folders.
- Keep the downloaded server archive outside the live directory so you can reconstruct a clean installation.
2. Extract without mixing versions
Extract the server distribution into the empty directory. Do not copy files from a 1.19.2 installation into a 1.20.1 installation, and do not merge a player’s client configuration into the server unless the pack documentation specifically requires it. If you are replacing an earlier attempt, start with a new directory rather than deleting files selectively; leftover mods and libraries are a frequent source of confusing errors.
3. Launch once with the supplied method
Run the launch script or command included with the server pack and allow Forge to finish its first startup. The initial run normally creates libraries, configuration files, logs, and a world directory. The console may stop because the EULA has not yet been accepted; that is expected on a new installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the exact Java and Forge invocation documented by the pack. If there is no script, use the Forge server launcher identified in the extracted files and pass the headless option required by that launcher. Do not guess a JAR filename or substitute the client launcher.
4. Accept the EULA and restart
Read the Minecraft EULA, then open the generated eula.txt and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to the terms. Save the file and start the server again using the same launch method. The server should proceed far enough to generate its normal directories and reach a stable console state.
5. Configure server properties
Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration. Open server.properties and set the options appropriate for your group:
- Choose a listening port that is available on the host and document it for your network rule.
- Set difficulty, game mode, view distance, simulation distance, and other gameplay values deliberately; higher distances increase work as players explore.
- Enable a whitelist if the server is for invited friends, then add each player’s exact in-game name.
- Configure operator or permission access sparingly. Give administrative privileges only to trusted accounts.
- Review online-mode and authentication settings rather than disabling protections to work around a client problem.
Restart after changes and check the console for parsing errors. Keep a copy of the working properties file with your server documentation.

Test the server before opening it to friends
Local test checklist
- Start the server and wait for a stable “ready” state in the console instead of joining while Forge is still loading.
- Connect from a client on the same machine or local network using the host address and configured port.
- Create or load a test world and walk far enough to generate new terrain.
- Open the quest book and verify that SteamPunk’s quests, advancements, recipes, and progression data load correctly.
- Test at least one technology or machine chain, one dimension or portal path available in your progression, and normal inventory and crafting behavior.
- Stop the server cleanly, restart it, and confirm the world and quest progress persist.
Testing locally separates pack problems from Internet routing problems. If the local client cannot join, fix the Forge, mod, configuration, Java, or world issue before touching port forwarding.

Expose the server only after the local test succeeds
For players outside your home network, configure a firewall rule that permits the chosen port for the server process, then forward the same port from your router to the host machine’s local address. Give friends the public address and port, not the private address used inside your home. Some Internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections; in that case, port forwarding may not work and a managed host or another network solution is required.
Keep the whitelist enabled while testing. Do not publish the address broadly, and do not disable the firewall or authentication simply because a friend receives a timeout. Check the router rule, host firewall, public address, and server listening port independently.
Make every player’s client identical
Every participant needs the same Minecraft version, Forge loader, SteamPunk release, mods, and configuration files. “I installed the same pack” is not enough if one player selected a different release, allowed a launcher to update individual mods, or retained an old configuration.
- Distribute the exact release identifier: SteamPunk 1.20.1 v19 for the current branch, or the exact 1.19.2 release if that is your chosen target.
- Have everyone select the matching Minecraft version and Forge profile.
- Compare the installed mod list and versions if a player cannot connect.
- Copy server-required configuration files only when the pack documentation calls for it; do not overwrite a client’s entire instance blindly.
- Remove extra client-side mods that alter registries, networking, or gameplay when the server reports a mod-list mismatch.
Connection errors that mention missing mods, differing channels, registry mismatches, or incompatible protocol data almost always mean one side is not using the same pack state. Reinstalling the exact profile is usually safer than manually replacing individual files.
Backups and safe updates
What to back up
- The complete world directory, including all dimension and region data.
- The
configdirectory and any pack-specific configuration folders. server.properties, whitelist and permissions files, and the launch script or documented startup settings.- A record of the pack release, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java version, and installed server files.
Stop the server cleanly before making a full file-level backup, or use a backup method that guarantees a consistent snapshot. Store at least one copy outside the live machine. Periodically restore a backup to a separate test directory; a backup that has never been restored is not verified.
Update procedure
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the live server cleanly.
- Make and verify a complete world and configuration backup.
- Install the new pack release in a separate test directory rather than overwriting the live files.
- Use the new release’s matching server distribution and Forge files; do not carry forward obsolete mods or libraries automatically.
- Copy a backup of the world into the test installation and inspect startup logs, quest data, recipes, dimensions, and machines.
- Have a player join the test copy and confirm that the client profile is updated to the same release.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule the live migration. Keep the previous server directory untouched until the new world has been played and backed up.
Never downgrade a world casually. A newer mod or Minecraft version can change registries, terrain, recipes, or saved data. If an update fails, stop the test server, review the first meaningful error in the log, and restore the pre-update copy rather than repeatedly starting the live world with mismatched files.

The server uses the wrong branch
Symptoms: missing mods, incompatible Forge errors, registry mismatches, or a world that will not load after you copied files from another installation.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Fix: choose one target—1.20.1 v19 or 1.19.2 v25 HF—then rebuild the server and client profiles from that release. Keep separate directories and separate backups for the two branches.
You uploaded a client folder
Symptoms: no usable Forge server launcher, client-only mod crashes, missing libraries, or a startup script that expects a launcher environment.
Fix: download the release’s named server distribution. If none is provided, follow the pack’s documented server installation process instead of converting a client folder by trial and error.
Forge or a mod does not match
Symptoms: the server stops during mod loading, players receive a mod-list mismatch, or the log names a dependency or registry difference.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: compare Minecraft version, Forge build, pack release, mod filenames, and configuration files on both sides. Reinstall the complete matching profile rather than updating one mod independently.
The server runs out of resources
Symptoms: long pauses, rising tick times, “can’t keep up” messages, out-of-memory errors, or slow chunk generation when several players explore.
Fix: confirm that Java has the intended memory allocation, reduce view and simulation distances, limit simultaneous exploration and heavy automation during testing, and monitor CPU, RAM, and disk usage. Move from the 6–8 GB starting range toward 10–12 GB for a five-to-15-player group when actual workload justifies it. More RAM cannot fix every CPU, storage, or misconfiguration problem.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Friends cannot connect from outside
Symptoms: local connections work but external players time out or receive a refused connection.
Fix: verify that the server is listening on the configured port, the operating-system firewall allows it, the router forwards that same port to the correct local address, and the public address has not changed. If the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound traffic, use a network arrangement that supports inbound access or move the server to a managed host.
The world becomes corrupted after an update
Symptoms: crashes while loading a dimension, missing blocks or items, lost quest progress, or errors immediately after changing pack versions.
Fix: stop using the changed world, restore the pre-update backup, and reproduce the update in an isolated copy. Confirm that the new release explicitly supports upgrading from your old release before trying again.
Operational practices for a reliable small server
- Use a whitelist and review it when a player leaves the group.
- Keep the server process separate from unrelated applications so resource spikes are visible.
- Record every change to pack release, Forge, Java, properties, and permissions in a dated note.
- Watch logs after restarts and after players enter new dimensions or generate large areas.
- Schedule backups before maintenance, not after an update has already failed.
- Tell players when the server will restart and allow them to log out safely.
- Keep the original server archive and the last known-good directory until the replacement has been validated.
These practices matter more for SteamPunk [LPS] than for a small vanilla world because its quests, dimensions, machines, and large mod set create more files and more opportunities for version drift.

Choose self-hosting when
- You are comfortable managing Java, Forge files, router rules, firewalls, and backups.
- The server is primarily for local testing or a small group and your Internet connection supports the expected players.
- You want unrestricted access to worlds, logs, configuration, and custom scripts.
Choose managed hosting when
- You need a public server without configuring home-network port forwarding.
- You prefer a control panel, automated installation, or a pack-specific updater.
- You can verify the provider’s region, CPU policy, backup retention, restore process, network protection, and total recurring cost.
Whether the machine is at home or in a data center, the compatibility rule does not change: the server and every client must remain on the same SteamPunk release, Minecraft version, Forge build, mod set, and required configuration.
