To host a Starbound server in 2026, install the separate Starbound Dedicated Server Steam tool (App 533830) on an always-available Windows or Linux machine, launch it once to generate its configuration, edit storage/starbound_server.config, and make the server reachable on TCP port 21025. Players on your home network can test locally; friends elsewhere need a router port-forward and a host-firewall rule. Add mods only after a vanilla server works, and back up the server’s storage directory before updates or configuration changes.
What you need before starting
A dedicated server is a separate program from the Starbound game client. SteamDB’s listing identifies the Starbound Dedicated Server as Steam Tool app 533830 and lists Windows and Linux launch options. That establishes those as the platforms documented for the tool; it is not a promise that every future operating-system release will behave identically.
- A host machine: Use a Windows or Linux computer that can remain powered on whenever people want to play. The machine must have a network route that other players can reach.
- Server files: Install the dedicated-server tool with SteamCMD or another Steam installation method, then use the executable in the directory where the files were actually installed.
- Network control: You need access to the host’s local firewall and, for internet play, the router that provides its internet connection.
- Administrative access: Editing the server configuration and forwarding a port normally requires administrator or root privileges.
- A backup location: Keep a copy of the server’s
storagedirectory before changing settings, updating files, or adding mods.
No authoritative current minimum CPU, memory, or disk specification was established for the dedicated server. Do not buy hardware based on an invented requirement. Start with a machine that runs the game server comfortably, monitor its resource use while your group plays, and scale up if the operating system begins paging or the server becomes unstable.

The rest of this guide uses a direct Windows/Linux installation because it exposes the settings you need to understand even if you later move the files into a container.

Install the Starbound Dedicated Server with SteamCMD
1. Create a dedicated installation directory
Choose a directory with enough free space for the server files, universe data, logs, and mods. Avoid placing the installation in a personal cloud-synchronization folder, where simultaneous file changes can corrupt saves. Record the full path; you will need it when locating the executable and the storage directory.
2. Install or update the Steam tool
Run SteamCMD using an account and installation method appropriate for your operating system. The SteamDB record identifies the dedicated server as app ID 533830. A typical SteamCMD session uses the app ID in an update command:

steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 533830 validate +quitSteamCMD syntax and authentication behavior can change, so treat that as the command pattern rather than a guarantee that every installation permits anonymous access. If the command reports an authentication or platform error, read the error text, confirm that SteamCMD is the current build for your operating system, and check that the installation directory is writable.
3. Confirm where the files landed
Do not copy an old tutorial’s path verbatim. SteamCMD’s library location, a graphical Steam installation, and a container can all place the server in different directories. Open the directory that contains the dedicated-server executable and verify that it also contains the expected server folders. The installed location is the reliable reference for every later step.
Launch once to generate the configuration
Start the dedicated-server executable from its installation directory before editing settings. Community setup instructions for the Starbound server use this first launch to create the configuration under the server’s storage directory. The initial run may also create log and universe data. Wait for the process to finish its startup messages, then stop it cleanly rather than killing the process.

After that run, locate:
<your-server-installation>/storage/starbound_server.configThe exact path separator differs between Windows and Linux. If the file is absent, confirm that you launched the dedicated server itself, not the game client, and that the process had permission to write to its installation directory.
Configure the server safely
Open the generated file, not a hand-made replacement
Open starbound_server.config in a text editor that preserves plain text and the file’s existing structure. Make a backup copy first. Keep punctuation and data types intact: a missing comma, quote, or brace can prevent startup. Change one group of settings at a time so a later failure has an obvious cause.
Set the identity and player limit
The community management guide identifies serverName and maxPlayers among the configurable values. Give the server a name your friends will recognize and set a player limit appropriate for your group. Do not assume that increasing the number is free; higher concurrency can increase CPU, memory, disk, and network pressure.
Understand bind addresses and ports
Bind settings determine which network interfaces accept connections. For an initial test, leave the generated bind values unchanged unless you know that the host has several network interfaces and must listen on a particular one. The default internet-hosting port identified by the community multiplayer guide is TCP 21025. If you change the server port in the configuration, every firewall and router rule must use the new value.
Use a password deliberately
The management guide documents account-bound passwords and other password-related settings. For a private world, set a password using the syntax shown in the configuration file you generated. Use a password that is not reused for email, Steam, your operating-system account, or any other service. Share it only with the players who should join. If the setting’s meaning is unclear, leave advanced account-bound options alone until the basic server works.
Leave query and RCON disabled unless you need them
Query and RCON are optional administration features listed by the community management guide. They are not required for ordinary in-game connections. Enabling them can create an additional network service and credential to protect. Do not expose either feature to the internet casually; use a strong, unique credential, restrict the listening interface where possible, and forward only the ports you understand.

Test locally before opening the server to the internet
- Start the server and wait for its normal listening/startup message.
- On the same computer, launch Starbound and add a multiplayer server using the host’s loopback address, usually
127.0.0.1, and the configured server port. - If another computer is on the same home network, test with the host’s private address, such as its
192.168.x.xor10.x.x.xaddress, rather than the public address. - Join, create or load a character, move around briefly, and disconnect cleanly. Check the server log for errors.
A loopback address proves only that the service is running on the host. It does not make the world reachable to a friend on another network.
Allow friends to connect from outside your home
1. Give the host a stable private address
Port forwarding targets a private address. Reserve the host’s address in the router’s DHCP settings, or configure a static address using a method appropriate for your network. If the address changes later, the forwarding rule can silently point at the wrong computer.
2. Allow the server through the host firewall
Create an inbound rule for the server’s TCP port. With the default configuration, that is TCP 21025. If the firewall asks whether to permit a program or a port, ensure the rule applies to the network profile the host actually uses. A router rule alone is insufficient when the operating system drops the packet.

3. Forward the port on the router
Create a port-forwarding rule from the router’s internet-facing interface to the host’s private address and TCP 21025. Match the internal and external port unless you have a specific reason to translate them. If you changed the Starbound port, forward that changed value instead.
4. Give remote players the correct address
Remote players need the home connection’s current public address and the server port. They should not use 127.0.0.1, the host’s private LAN address, or a router-management address. Because public addresses can change, tell players the new address whenever the internet connection receives a different one, or use a dynamic-DNS service you trust.
5. Test from a genuinely different network
A phone’s cellular hotspot or a friend’s connection is a better test than another device on the same Wi-Fi. Local tests can succeed even when the router’s forwarding, the host firewall, or the internet provider blocks inbound traffic.

Some connections use carrier-grade NAT or otherwise prohibit unsolicited inbound connections. In that situation, a correct local configuration and port-forward can still fail from the internet. The available community instructions do not establish a universal workaround; ask the provider whether you have a routable public address or use a different hosting arrangement.

A modded-server community guide describes installing mods alongside the dedicated server, but no single procedure guarantees compatibility for every mod or installation method. Treat mod support as a compatibility exercise rather than a switch you can flip after networking.
- Run the unmodified server long enough to verify local and remote joining.
- Stop the server and back up the complete
storagedirectory, including universe data and any existing mod files. - Install one mod, or one small related group, in the server’s mod location using that mod’s documented method.
- Have every client install the matching client-side files and versions when the mod requires them.
- Start the server, inspect the log, and test a disposable character or backup universe before inviting the whole group.
- If the server stops starting or clients are rejected, remove the newest mod from the backup copy, then test the remaining set.
Do not assume that a mod working in single-player will work on a dedicated server, or that clients can join with a different version. The server and every client must follow the mod author’s compatibility requirements.
Keep worlds persistent and recoverable
Starbound’s universe and server data live beneath the installation’s storage area. The community Docker project, “starbound-server” from Didstopia, specifically uses a mounted storage location so data survives container replacement. The same operational principle applies to a normal installation: treat the storage directory as valuable save data, not disposable program files.
- Before an update: stop the server cleanly and copy the entire storage directory to a separate disk or backup system.
- Before configuration changes: preserve the previous configuration file so you can restore a known-good version.
- Before adding mods: make a dated backup of universe data and the current mod set.
- After a successful session: verify that the backup process can actually read the files and that the destination has free space.
Exact save and mod paths can differ by operating system, Steam library, container image, and version. Confirm the directories used by your installed files rather than relying on a path copied from an older guide.
Optional: use a Linux Docker deployment
A container can make a Linux deployment repeatable, but it is an administration choice, not a requirement for hosting Starbound. The Didstopia community repository documents a Docker-oriented setup and persistent storage mounts. Because it is third-party and community maintained, verify that its image, environment variables, paths, and Starbound version still match what you intend to run.

Before using a container, understand four things:
- Which host directory is mounted into the container for server storage.
- How the container exposes TCP 21025 to the host.
- How image updates preserve the mounted universe and mod data.
- How to retrieve logs and stop the container cleanly before backups.
If you cannot explain where the universe files live outside the container, do not treat the deployment as persistent. Prove that a backup and restore works before inviting players.
Maintain the server after launch
Keep the process and host available
The server process must remain running, and the host must remain powered, connected, and reachable. Disable sleep or hibernation on a machine intended to host continuously, while retaining normal operating-system security updates.
Update in a controlled window
Use SteamCMD to update the dedicated-server files, but schedule the update when nobody is playing. Stop the process, back up storage, update, and launch again while watching the log. If a new build or mod causes a failure, restore the previous configuration and backup rather than repeatedly changing several variables at once.
Document the working setup
Record the installation path, configured port, private host address, router rule, firewall rule, enabled mods, and backup location. This short inventory turns a future address change or reinstall into a repeatable procedure instead of guesswork.
Troubleshooting by symptom

What the available documentation does—and does not—establish
SteamDB’s app configuration record, whose last record update is shown as March 10, 2026, is useful for identifying app 533830 and the listed Windows and Linux launch options. It is a secondary index, not an official Starbound operations manual.
The Steam Community dedicated-server guide is community-maintained and older, although its page mentions a script update in 2025. It supports the SteamCMD, first-launch, and mod-install workflow but should not override the files and settings in your installed version. The community multiplayer guide is older still; use it for the TCP 21025 and local-versus-remote networking model, then verify your own configuration. The management guide and Didstopia Docker project are third-party references for settings, persistence, and container operation.
Those sources do not establish a current universal hardware minimum, guaranteed compatibility for every mod, a universal solution for carrier-grade NAT, or a particular managed-hosting provider. Treat each of those as a decision requiring current, installation-specific verification.
