To host Star Technology, install the official server-files package that matches your clients, run its Forge server setup on a machine with at least 4GB of memory (6GB or more is the project’s recommendation), accept Minecraft’s EULA, configure networking, and keep the server and every client on the same pack build. A small group generally benefits from 6–8GB, while larger groups and heavily automated bases need additional headroom.
What a Star Technology server is
Star Technology is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge modpack from the StarT Dev Team. Its design is based on GregTech CEu Modern and progression toward building Stargates for travel between dimensions. CurseForge categorizes it as a skyblock pack and describes it as one of the early packs built around GregTech CEu Modern.
The project also has a 1.19.2 release. That older release is not interchangeable with the 1.20.1 edition: Minecraft version, Forge loader, mods, configuration files and world data must match the release you intend to run. Star Technology remains under development, so file names, release builds and included scripts can change. Check the project’s current files immediately before downloading.
Choose how you will host it
The right hosting route depends less on the pack’s name than on your network, administration experience and tolerance for maintenance. No cited source provides a reproducible player-count benchmark, so treat capacity figures as planning guidance rather than guarantees.

Self-host when you need control
A spare desktop or home server is sensible if it can remain powered, has stable upload bandwidth and lets you change router and firewall rules. You avoid a monthly hosting bill and retain direct access to every file. In exchange, you are responsible for operating-system patches, power failures, security, port exposure, backups and diagnosing crashes.
Use a VPS when home networking is the limitation
A VPS moves the public endpoint into a data center and can provide steadier connectivity than a residential connection. It does not remove server administration: you still install the Forge server, manage the operating system, create backups, open the required firewall port and monitor storage and memory.

Managed panels can install a modpack from a CurseForge library and may apply Forge settings for the selected release. Before paying, confirm that the panel offers the exact Star Technology build and Minecraft 1.20.1 edition you need, that the advertised memory is dedicated or shared, where the server is located, how backups and restores work, and what support covers. A one-click installer does not make an incompatible client pack compatible.
Hardware and network requirements
The StarT Dev Team repository README states a 4GB minimum and 6GB or more recommended. Those figures are the project’s baseline, not a promise of a particular tick rate or player count. A server consumes memory for the Forge runtime, loaded chunks, machines, entities, world data and Java overhead.

For a server rather than a client, one hosting guide also recommends a modern quad-core CPU, roughly 10GB of SSD space and at least 10Mbps upload bandwidth. Storage needs grow as the world explores new areas and backups accumulate, so treat 10GB as an initial planning figure, not a permanent quota.
- CPU: Prefer strong single-thread performance as well as multiple cores. Automation, chunk generation and entity processing can create a main-thread bottleneck even when total CPU usage looks low.
- Storage: Use an SSD with room for the server, logs, world growth and at least one backup set. Keep backups outside the live server directory.
- Upload: Residential upload quality matters to every remote player. A nominal speed test does not reveal packet loss, bufferbloat or evening congestion.
- Operating-system memory: Do not allocate all physical RAM to the Minecraft process. The operating system, file cache and other services need headroom.
Prepare before installing
Preparation prevents the most expensive mistakes: an incompatible download, a world stored in a disposable folder or a server that is unreachable from outside your home.

- Choose one release, such as the current 1.20.1 edition, and record its exact Star Technology build and Forge version.
- Install the server on a dedicated directory with a stable path and sufficient free SSD space.
- Use a supported Java installation for the selected Forge and Minecraft release. If the supplied launcher or script specifies a runtime, follow that requirement rather than substituting a different one.
- Decide where backups will live. A second disk, another computer or a protected remote location is safer than a second folder on the same disk.
- If friends will connect over the internet, identify the host machine’s local address and confirm that your router allows inbound port forwarding.
- Ask every player to install the same Minecraft version, Forge release, Star Technology build and any pack mode required by the server.
Install the official Star Technology server files
1. Select the matching server-files release
- Open Star Technology’s official CurseForge files page.
- Choose a dedicated server-files download, not an arbitrary client profile or a random archive copied from another installation.
- Match the server archive to the exact release that every player will install. A 1.20.1 client cannot join a 1.19.2 server, and a different pack build can contain different mods or configuration.
- Read the release notes and included README. Because the project is under development, the newest file may use a different script or installation sequence from an older tutorial.
2. Extract into a dedicated folder
Extract the archive without nesting it several levels deep or mixing it with another modpack. Keep the original archive until the server has started successfully. On a VPS, upload the archive using the provider’s file manager or a secure file-transfer method; on a home machine, use a local directory with permissions that allow the server account to read and write.
3. Run the supplied Forge server installation
Locate the Forge installer and any launch scripts included with the server pack. Run the installer’s server-install option, commonly labeled Install Server, and select the dedicated server folder. Follow the pack’s supplied script when one is present because it may set the expected paths or arguments. Do not copy a Forge jar from a different Minecraft release.

Allow the installer to finish before attempting to start the world. If it reports a missing runtime, stop and install the compatible Java version rather than repeatedly launching the incomplete server.
4. Accept the EULA
- Start the server once using the supplied launcher or script.
- When startup stops and creates
eula.txt, open that file in a text editor. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=true, save it and close the editor. - Start the server again and watch the console until it reports that the server is ready for connections.
Accepting the EULA is a required confirmation that you agree to Minecraft’s terms; it is not a substitute for waiting for Forge and the pack to finish loading.
5. Configure the world and server properties
Open server.properties after the first successful generation and set the options that matter to your group, including the world name and difficulty. Change one setting at a time and retain a copy of the working file. Avoid editing generated mod configuration files until you know which mod owns the option and have a backup of the world.
6. Publish the server port safely
For internet play, allow the Minecraft server port through the host firewall and forward that port from the router to the host’s local address. Reserve the host’s local address in the router when possible so the forwarding rule does not break after a DHCP change. Share only the public address and port players need; do not expose administrative services such as remote-desktop or SSH ports without their own security controls.

7. Test locally, then test remotely
Join from the host or local network first. This separates pack, Forge and world errors from router problems. Then have a player on a different network connect using the public address. If local access works but remote access fails, inspect firewall rules, port forwarding, the server bind address and whether your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT.
Make clients match the server
Every player must use the same Minecraft release, Forge loader, Star Technology build and required pack mode. Copying only the visible mods folder is unreliable because configuration, scripts, resource files and dependency versions can also matter. Give players the official client release instructions and tell them to close the game before replacing a profile.

What to back up
- The complete world directory, including dimension data and player data.
server.properties, the EULA file and the server’s configuration directories.- Any custom scripts, whitelist or operator files and locally edited settings.
- A record of the Minecraft version, Forge version and Star Technology build used to create the backup.
Use a repeatable backup routine
Stop the server before making a simple file copy, or use a backup method that is explicitly safe for a running world. Keep multiple restore points and periodically verify that an archive can actually be opened. A backup on the same disk protects against accidental deletion but not disk failure, ransomware or a damaged filesystem.

Update conservatively
- Read the new release notes and check whether the world or configuration needs migration.
- Make a dated backup before changing any pack or Forge files.
- Test the update on a copy of the world when the server is important to your group.
- Update the server and clients as one coordinated change.
- Keep the prior server files and backup until players have confirmed that dimensions, machines and inventories load correctly.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server closes during startup
Read the first meaningful error in the server log rather than the final cascade of “server stopped” messages. Confirm that the Java runtime is compatible, the Forge installer completed, the server account can read and write the directory and enough memory is available. Missing or mismatched mods are common when a client archive was used instead of the official server pack.
A player receives a mod or version mismatch
Compare the player’s Minecraft version, Forge version, Star Technology build and pack mode with the server. Remove stale profiles and reinstall from the same release when necessary. Do not solve a mismatch by deleting random mods: dependencies can fail later or corrupt the intended pack.

Friends cannot connect
- Confirm the server is running and listening on the expected port.
- Check the host firewall for an inbound rule covering the server process or port.
- Verify that the router forwards the same external and internal port to the correct local address.
- Check that the server is not bound only to a loopback address.
- Have the remote player use the current public address and port, not the host’s private address.
- If forwarding is correct but the port is still unreachable, ask whether the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections.
The server lags or ticks slow down
First identify whether the problem is memory pressure, CPU saturation, disk activity or network delay. Reduce view distance or simulation distance, limit chunk loaders and inspect areas with large automated factories or many entities. Add memory only when the machine has physical headroom; allocating excessive heap can increase garbage-collection pauses instead of improving performance.
Ask players whether the slowdown follows one base, one dimension or world generation. A localized automation problem calls for reducing the responsible machines or chunk loaders, while repeated pauses during exploration may indicate CPU, storage or memory limits.
The world is damaged after an update
Stop the server immediately and preserve the affected files. Restore the last known-good backup to a separate test directory, identify the changed pack or configuration, and do not overwrite the only backup while experimenting. Resume play only after the restored copy loads and players’ important data is present.
Operate a reliable long-term server
- Run the server under a dedicated account rather than an administrator account where practical.
- Keep the operating system, Java runtime and remote-management tools patched.
- Restrict operator privileges to trusted players and maintain a whitelist for private groups.
- Watch free disk space, memory use, CPU load, restart frequency and log growth.
- Schedule maintenance announcements before backups, reboots or pack updates.
- Keep a written record of the working Forge and Star Technology versions so a failed update can be reversed.
Automation-heavy GregTech progression can change the server’s resource profile over time. A world that is comfortable for two players at the beginning may need more memory, faster storage or lower simulation settings after multiple dimensions, chunk loaders and factories are active.

A practical decision checklist
Choose self-hosting if all of these are true
- You can leave the machine online reliably.
- Your upload connection is stable for the expected players.
- You can configure the router and firewall.
- You have a separate backup destination and are willing to perform updates and recovery.
Choose a VPS if these are the main constraints
- Your home connection cannot accept inbound traffic or has poor uptime.
- You are comfortable administering Linux or an equivalent server operating system.
- You want a data-center location but still need control over Forge and files.
Choose managed hosting if these are the priorities
- You want a panel to install and restart the pack.
- You do not want to maintain Java, Forge, firewall rules and operating-system updates.
- You have checked the provider’s exact pack version, allocated memory, backup policy, region and support limits.
Whichever route you choose, the technical foundation is the same: an official matching server-files release, a compatible Forge installation, enough memory for the actual world, a reachable port, synchronized clients and backups that have been tested before they are needed.
