To host a public Squad server in 2026, install the separate Squad Dedicated Server through SteamCMD (App ID 403240), launch it with a deliberate configuration, open the required UDP ports at every firewall and routing layer, and verify a join from a different network. A process that starts successfully is not necessarily reachable from the internet. Your host must have an inbound path, your configuration must match the current game build, and your listing expectations must account for Squad’s licensed-versus-custom-server rules.

What you need before installing anything

Prepare the host and network first. This prevents the common situation in which the server appears healthy locally but no outside player can discover or join it.

A machine you can administer

You need operating-system access to install SteamCMD, create and edit files, run the server process, configure a firewall, and restart services. A spare desktop or server in your home can work if it has adequate sustained CPU performance, memory headroom, stable storage, and a reliable internet connection. Renting a dedicated or virtual server is often simpler when you lack hardware, cannot accept inbound connections, or do not want to maintain a machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An inbound internet path

Public players must be able to initiate connections to your host. Verify that you control the host firewall and, when applicable, the router or provider edge firewall. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) can prevent unsolicited inbound IPv4 traffic even when your local router has a port-forwarding screen. Ask the ISP for a public address or supported inbound mapping, or choose a host with an addressable network. A local-network join proves only that the process works on the LAN; it does not prove internet reachability.

A current game build

The current guide dated October 8, 2026, identifies Squad 10.6 Hotfix 2, released October 2, 2026, as the latest verified version. Treat that as a dated reference rather than a permanent requirement: check the installed files and current publisher guidance whenever the game updates.

Administrative access and backups

Plan where you will store the server files, configuration backups, logs, and any mod content. Stop the server before updating or making bulk file changes. Keep a copy of the configuration and permissions files outside the installation directory so an update or failed edit does not remove your recovery path.

Self-hosting or renting: choose by constraints, not marketing

Both approaches can run the same dedicated-server software. The practical difference is who supplies hardware, connectivity, security controls, and maintenance.

Decision area Self-hosted machine Rented dedicated or virtual host
Control Full control of the operating system, files, firewall, and update schedule. Control depends on the access level and panel; confirm whether you receive administrator or root access.
Inbound connectivity You must solve public addressing, router forwarding, ISP restrictions, and local firewall rules. The provider normally supplies an addressable interface, but you still need to configure the host firewall and provider firewall.
Performance Performance depends on your processor’s sustained per-core speed, memory, storage, and what else runs on the machine. Ask what CPU resources are dedicated or shared and how performance is protected under load.
Maintenance You handle operating-system updates, hardware failures, backups, monitoring, and recovery. The provider manages physical infrastructure; you remain responsible for the game service, configuration, updates, and many security tasks.
Network and mitigation Your ISP and router determine upstream capacity and protection against attacks. Compare region, latency, DDoS provisions, traffic limits, and the provider’s incident process.
Mods and files You can manage files directly, subject to your own storage and bandwidth. Confirm that the panel or account permits the mods, workshop content, and file access your community needs.
Recovery You must design and test backups, restore procedures, and spare hardware or images. Check snapshot, backup, console, and recovery controls; do not assume a provider’s backup is automatic or suitable.
Listing and licensing You must satisfy the current publisher’s rules if you want primary-browser placement. The infrastructure and account may have additional restrictions; confirm eligibility before committing.

Do not select a host solely from a player-count label. Ask for the CPU model or allocation, memory, storage, network region, operating-system access, backup method, support response, mod policy, and licensing compatibility. No reliable price or provider ranking is established here, so compare those concrete capabilities directly. If you would rather not maintain a machine yourself, Godlike.Host offers Squad server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, free DDoS protection, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket; see the current plans.

Install the Squad dedicated server with SteamCMD

The dedicated server is a separate Steam tool, not the client installation. SteamCMD can install it anonymously with App ID 403240.

1. Install SteamCMD

Install the SteamCMD package for your operating system and choose a dedicated directory with sufficient free space. Avoid placing live files in a personal game-client directory where an update or permission change could affect the server.

2. Download the server files

Open a terminal or command prompt and run the equivalent of the following SteamCMD sequence, replacing the path with your chosen directory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:SquadServer +app_update 403240 +quit

On Linux, use a directory such as /opt/squadserver and the path syntax appropriate to your installation:

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /opt/squadserver +app_update 403240 +quit

Anonymous login is the method described by the community-maintained Squad Wiki installation material. The wiki is procedural corroboration, not a guarantee that every command remains unchanged, so inspect the files SteamCMD actually creates.

3. Update safely

Stop the running server before updating:

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /path/to/SquadServer +app_update 403240 +quit

Routine updates do not require validation on every run. Add SteamCMD validation when files appear corrupt or the server has unusual crashes, then review configuration and logs before restoring public service. Keep a dated backup of configuration and administration files before an update.

Launch the server with explicit, reviewable settings

Use the executable and launch script supplied by the current installation. The October 2026 guide illustrates parameters such as Port=7787, QueryPort=27165, beaconport=15000, FIXEDMAXPLAYERS=80, and RANDOM=NONE. These are starting examples, not a universal optimum. Confirm the supported spelling, capitalization, and values in your installed build before exposing the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Port=7787 QueryPort=27165 beaconport=15000 FIXEDMAXPLAYERS=80 RANDOM=NONE

Keep launch arguments in a script or service definition instead of typing them by hand after every restart. Record the intended port, player cap, map rotation, and mod set beside the script so another administrator can reproduce the deployment.

Server configuration directory

The installation material places server configuration under SquadGame/ServerConfig/. Files commonly used for administration include:

  • Server.cfg: identity and server behavior settings supported by the current build.
  • Admins.cfg: administrator identities and permissions.
  • Rcon.cfg: remote-console settings, including the RCON password and related controls.
  • Rotation and other administration files: the maps, layers, or rules the server should use.

Open each file after the first launch and confirm that the server generated the expected structure. Define a clear server name, set permissions deliberately, and configure a tested rotation before inviting the public. Make one change at a time and retain the previous version so you can revert a bad edit.

Open only the ports your current build uses

The October 2026 guide lists these default UDP values:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Function Port and protocol How to treat the value
Game traffic 7787 UDP Default starting value; verify against the launch command and current files.
Server query or browser information 27165 UDP Default starting value; required for discovery behavior in the relevant browser path.
Beacon in the example launch 15000 UDP Explicitly set by the guide’s example; not proof that every deployment uses the same value.

Configure every layer that can filter traffic:

  1. Confirm the ports in the launch script and server configuration.
  2. Create host-operating-system firewall rules for those UDP ports only.
  3. If the machine is behind a router, forward the same ports to the server’s fixed LAN address.
  4. If the provider supplies a network firewall or security group, allow the same ports there.
  5. Check that the host is listening on the intended interface and that no second service is claiming the port.
  6. After startup, test from a mobile hotspot or another external network, not only from the host’s LAN.

Do not copy a port list blindly from an older post. Build versions, provider panels, and custom launch values can change the effective configuration. Do not expose unrelated management ports to the public internet.

Secure administration before inviting players

RCON password and scope

Use a long, unique RCON password that is not reused for Steam, operating-system, email, or community accounts. Store it in the protected configuration file and limit who can read it. Restrict RCON access with firewall rules or a VPN rather than allowing the entire internet to reach the administration endpoint.

Administrator permissions

Add only the identities that actually need moderation or server-management rights. Give the least privilege that supports each role, remove former staff promptly, and back up Admins.cfg before edits. Test a permission change with a non-owner account so you know which commands it grants.

Backups and change control

Back up Server.cfg, Admins.cfg, Rcon.cfg, rotation files, launch scripts, and any mod manifest. Keep at least one copy off the host. Before changing a map rotation or mod set, save the known-good version and note the date. A backup is useful only if you can restore it; periodically rehearse restoring configuration to a stopped test instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operating-system security

Apply operating-system security updates, run the server under a dedicated account when practical, disable unnecessary services, and monitor disk space. Treat log files and RCON credentials as sensitive. If you use a rented host, verify who can access console output, snapshots, and support tickets.

Licensing determines where players see the server

The setup sources distinguish two listing outcomes. An unlicensed server appears under Custom Servers. A license is required for eligibility in the primary Server Browser. The current guide also says licensed servers must remain public and describes infrastructure constraints.

Those statements do not establish every current eligibility rule. If primary-browser placement matters to your community, check the current licensing process and requirements from Offworld before purchasing hardware, signing a hosting contract, or advertising a launch date. Do not assume that installing App ID 403240 grants a license or changes the browser category.

Set realistic hardware capacity

There is no authoritative official hardware statistic in the available material that maps a processor, memory amount, or player cap to guaranteed performance. Plan around sustained per-core CPU performance, memory headroom, storage behavior, network stability, intended player count, selected layers, and mods. Measure during realistic matches rather than relying on an idle server’s resource graph.

The 80-player planning figure

A 2026 provider guide uses 32 GB of RAM for an 80-player setup as a planning estimate. It is not an official Squad requirement and should not be treated as a universal minimum. Actual usage varies with the operating system, background services, map layers, mods, logs, and concurrent processes.

A capacity test that produces useful evidence

  1. Start with a conservative player cap and the exact layers and mods you intend to run.
  2. Observe CPU per-core utilization, memory consumption, storage latency, network throughput, and server tick or performance indicators during a full, busy match.
  3. Record the worst sustained period, not only the average or an empty-map reading.
  4. Increase the cap only when the measured workload remains stable and players do not experience rubber-banding, delayed actions, or disconnects.
  5. Repeat after major game updates or mod changes; a configuration that was stable on one build may not remain so.

Prioritize a processor with strong sustained single-thread or per-core performance over a high core count that cannot maintain speed. Leave memory and storage headroom for the operating system, logs, updates, and mods. Network stability and latency to the intended player region matter as much as raw bandwidth.

Make the server visible and prove that players can join

Use this sequence after the process starts:

  1. Read the startup log for bind errors, missing files, port conflicts, or failed mod loads.
  2. Confirm the expected process is listening on the configured UDP ports.
  3. Check the appropriate browser category: an unlicensed deployment should be sought under Custom Servers, while a licensed deployment may qualify for the primary browser if it meets current rules.
  4. Attempt a join from a different network, such as a mobile hotspot. Ask a second player outside your household to repeat the test.
  5. Check the in-game version, server version, mods, and layer rotation if discovery or joining fails.

A successful local launch is only one checkpoint. Browser visibility, routing, firewall behavior, version compatibility, and licensing category are separate conditions.

Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often

The process exits immediately

  • Check the startup log for a missing dependency, malformed launch argument, invalid configuration line, or port already in use.
  • Undo the most recent change and start with the last known-good configuration.
  • Run SteamCMD validation when files appear corrupted or crashes are unusual, then recheck mods and configuration.
  • Verify that the account running the service can read and write the installation and log directories.

The server runs but is not listed

  • Confirm that game and query ports match the launch settings, firewall rules, router forwarding, and provider security group.
  • Check whether you are looking in Custom Servers or the primary browser appropriate to the server’s licensing status.
  • Verify that the host has a public inbound path and is not behind unsupported CGNAT.
  • Check the current game build, server status, mods, and map configuration before changing multiple variables.

Players see the server but cannot join

  • Test from a second network to separate LAN routing from internet routing.
  • Confirm that the advertised address reaches the same machine receiving the forwarded ports.
  • Compare client and server versions and required mods.
  • Review provider or router logs for dropped UDP traffic and check for a host firewall rule that allows query traffic but blocks game traffic.

Performance collapses during a busy match

  • Compare per-core CPU usage and memory pressure during the exact layer and mod combination that causes the problem.
  • Lower the player cap temporarily and repeat the same scenario.
  • Remove or update recently added mods one at a time.
  • Check for competing processes, thermal throttling, storage saturation, and network instability.
  • Keep the lower cap until a measured test demonstrates that additional players are stable.

Operate the server as a small production service

Write down who can restart the process, change rotations, respond to abuse, and approve updates. Schedule maintenance windows and announce restarts to players. Keep launch scripts, configuration backups, and a short recovery checklist accessible to more than one trusted administrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each update, stop the service, back up configuration, run app_update 403240, validate only when corruption or abnormal crashes justify it, start the server, and perform an external join test. If the update changes supported settings, compare the generated files with your backups instead of blindly overwriting them.

Monitor disk space and log growth, review failed starts, and record player-cap changes with the workload observations that justified them. This evidence is more useful than an advertised hardware number because it reflects your maps, mods, region, and community behavior.

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • SteamCMD installed and App ID 403240 downloaded to a dedicated directory.
  • Operating-system account, storage, and permissions are ready.
  • Public inbound connectivity confirmed; CGNAT risk resolved.
  • Launch ports documented and matched at the host firewall, router, and provider edge.
  • Server identity, rotation, administrators, and RCON configured.
  • RCON password is unique and administration access is restricted.
  • Configuration and recovery files are backed up off-host.
  • Player cap is based on a realistic workload test, not the 32 GB/80-player planning estimate alone.
  • Licensing and desired browser category verified against current Offworld requirements.
  • External join test completed from a different network.

If any item fails, keep the server private while you correct it. The reliable path to a public Squad server is controlled installation, explicit networking, restricted administration, measured capacity, and an external test—not merely a running process.
