The dependable way to host Soulrend is to deploy its official CurseForge server pack on a machine with a supported 64-bit Java runtime, allocate at least 6 GB of memory (10 GB recommended), and keep the server, clients, Forge build, and Soulrend release identical. The current CurseForge files page lists v8.5, released October 9, 2026, but verify the files page again when you deploy because pack releases and server ZIPs can change.
What a Soulrend server needs
Soulrend is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack built for Forge 1.20.1. It is not a vanilla server with a few optional client mods: the server pack contains the Forge-side files, configurations, libraries, and scripts needed to run the modded world. Every player must install the same Soulrend release and the same Minecraft/Forge combination. A client on another pack version, a different Minecraft version, or a different mod loader will normally fail during the handshake or disconnect with a missing-mod, registry, or channel-mismatch error.

Apotheotic Studios and the CurseForge listing describe the pack as a soulslike action-RPG adventure with combat, quests, bosses, factions, and other systems. Those systems generate more server work than an empty vanilla world, especially while several players explore new terrain at once.
Choose where to run it
Self-hosted computer, VPS, or dedicated machine
A machine you control gives you the most control over files, Java options, firewall rules, backups, and upgrade timing. A home computer is practical for a small private group if its upload connection remains stable and the machine can stay on while friends play. A VPS or dedicated machine avoids exposing a home router and generally offers a datacenter connection, but you must administer the operating system, security updates, storage, and recovery process.

- Use a dedicated directory for the server so worlds, logs, scripts, and configuration files are easy to back up.
- Choose fast, reliable storage; world generation and exploration can create bursts of disk activity.
- Reserve memory for the operating system. Giving every installed gigabyte to Java can cause swapping or make the host unresponsive.
- Check the provider’s CPU share and sustained-performance limits. A plan can advertise enough RAM while throttling the processor during busy periods.
Managed hosting
A managed host handles the operating system and usually provides a control panel for installing a pack, starting the server, scheduling backups, and changing allocated resources. Convenience does not guarantee compatibility: “modpack support” may cover only selected loaders or an older import method. Confirm that the panel can install the current CurseForge Soulrend server pack and the exact Forge build before paying.

Compare hosts by allocated RAM and CPU share, one-click installation, backup and restore controls, player latency, exact Forge support, upgrade and downgrade rules, storage limits, and the complete monthly cost. A large memory number is not useful if the host cannot import the server pack or restore a world after a failed update.

The CurseForge files page currently identifies v8.5 as the latest Soulrend release, dated October 9, 2026. Treat that as a point-in-time value: a later file may become current, or the server-pack download may be replaced while the release number remains similar. Decide which release your group will use, then obtain both the server pack and client profile for that same release.
- Open the Soulrend files page in CurseForge and identify the selected release and its server-pack file. Confirm that the file is a Forge 1.20.1 ZIP rather than a client-only archive.
- Record the release number in your deployment notes. This makes it easier to identify which pack was used if a player later reports a mismatch.
- Download the ZIP directly to the machine that will run the server, or transfer it over a secure connection. Do not combine files from two releases.
- Have every player select the same release in the CurseForge launcher or another launcher that can install the pack’s Forge profile.
Do not update the server first and ask players to “let the launcher catch up.” Modded worlds can change registry data between releases. Back up the world, test the new pack on a copy, and schedule an update everyone can install at the same time.

Install the official server pack
1. Prepare Java and storage
Use a supported 64-bit Java runtime for a Forge/Minecraft 1.20.1 server. On a Linux host, run java -version and verify that the command resolves to the intended 64-bit installation; on Windows, run the same command in PowerShell or Command Prompt. If the command is missing or points to an unsupported runtime, install the runtime recommended by your operating-system or hosting provider before unpacking the server.
Create a directory used only for this instance. Give the service account ownership of that directory, and ensure the disk has room for the extracted pack, generated chunks, logs, backups, and temporary files. Keep backups outside the live directory when possible so a damaged or deleted world does not remove its only copy.

Extract the complete official server-pack ZIP into the dedicated directory. Do not drag a few JAR files out of the client installation and call that a server. The pack can include launch scripts, configuration folders, libraries, and files whose names change between releases.
Before starting, inspect the supplied scripts and read any included instructions. Use the script or documented command shipped with that release instead of assuming an older filename or manually constructing a Forge command. On Linux, check that the supplied shell script is executable; on Windows, use the supplied batch or launcher file. Keeping the pack’s launch process intact reduces the chance of omitting a library or JVM argument.

3. Start once and accept the EULA
- Run the pack’s supplied launch script or documented server command from inside the extracted directory.
- Allow the initial run to create the EULA and configuration files. The server will stop or refuse to continue until the agreement is accepted.
- Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change only the acceptance setting required by that file. Save it, then start the server again with the same supplied launcher. - Wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading before attempting a connection. The first run can take longer while libraries, registries, and the world are created.
If the process exits immediately, read the console output before trying another command. A Java path error, permission problem, missing library, or wrong working directory is more useful than repeatedly restarting.
4. Configure the world and access rules
Stop the server cleanly, then edit server.properties with a plain-text editor. Set the difficulty and view distance for your group, choose the server port required by your host, and enable the whitelist for a private friends-only world. Change one setting at a time and keep a copy of the original file so you can undo an accidental edit.
- Difficulty: Pick the intended challenge level before players establish bases and farms. Changing it later affects the shared world experience.
- View distance: A lower value reduces the number of chunks the server must keep active. It is a useful first adjustment if exploration causes long pauses.
- Whitelist: Enable it for a private group, then add each player’s exact in-game name through the server console or the host panel.
- Port: Keep the value consistent with the firewall, router forwarding rule, and the address you give players. Do not expose unrelated services on the same public port.
Start the server again and watch the console for a clean world load. Only then share the address with players.
Make the server reachable from the internet
On a home network, forward the configured game port from the router to the computer running the server, and allow that port through the computer’s firewall. Give friends the public address supplied by your internet connection, not the machine’s private LAN address. A changing residential address may require a provider-supported dynamic-DNS solution, but that service is separate from Soulrend itself.

On a VPS or dedicated machine, create an inbound firewall rule for the game port and restrict administration ports to your own IP range where possible. On a managed host, use the assigned address and port shown in its control panel; the provider may handle firewalling and forwarding for you. If players cannot connect, first test whether the server is listening locally, then check the host firewall, router rule, and address separately.

- Each player installs the selected Soulrend release through CurseForge or another launcher that supports the pack.
- Confirm that the launcher profile uses Minecraft Java Edition with Forge 1.20.1, matching the server’s selected release.
- Launch the profile once in single-player so required files finish downloading and the game reaches the title screen.
- In Multiplayer, add the server address and configured port, then connect after the server console reports a completed startup.
Players should not copy only a few mods from one computer to another. The server pack and client profile can contain different files by design, while still requiring the same release and loader. If one player receives a missing-dependency or registry-mismatch message, compare the profile’s release and loader before changing server files.

Apotheotic Studios/CurseForge lists 6 GB of allocated RAM as the minimum and 10 GB as the recommended target, with the recommendation representing about 65% of total system RAM. That percentage leaves roughly 35% for the operating system and other services; a machine with around 16 GB of physical memory is therefore a more sensible starting point for a 10 GB allocation than a 10 GB machine. These figures are publisher guidance, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for a particular player count.

Actual load changes with concurrent players, exploration speed, newly generated terrain, view distance, loaded farms, and processes sharing the machine. Monitor the host’s memory and CPU graphs while several players travel into unexplored areas. If the server pauses while memory is near its limit, increase the allocation within the host’s capacity and reduce view distance. If memory remains comfortable but ticks lag, investigate CPU contention, storage latency, entities, and chunk-generation bursts instead of blindly adding RAM.

Publisher example hardware
The same publisher guidance gives client examples of a Ryzen 5 5600X with an RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Ti at the minimum level, and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D with an RTX 4060 at the recommended level. Those examples describe client hardware guidance; they are not a measured server benchmark and should not be used as a promise of a specific tick rate.

Backups, updates, and routine administration
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world. Keep at least one recent backup outside the live directory and, ideally, another copy on separate storage. Include the world folders, configuration files, and a note of the Soulrend release. A backup made after an update cannot protect you from a registry conversion that already damaged the previous world.
Test an update on a copy
- Record the currently running release and make a complete backup.
- Duplicate the world into a separate test directory.
- Install the candidate server pack in a separate directory and point it at the copy, not the live world.
- Start the test server, inspect the console and
latest.log, and join with a client on the candidate release. - Check inventories, dimensions, quests, and a few previously explored areas before scheduling the live change.
- Only after the test succeeds, stop the production server and repeat the upgrade using the verified files.
Never mix an older server ZIP with a newer client profile. If the release changes, update the server and every client as one coordinated operation.
Watch logs and disk space
Keep an eye on latest.log, rolling logs, free disk space, and backup completion. A full disk can look like a mod failure because the server cannot write chunks or logs. Preserve the first error and the surrounding lines when asking a host or community for help; the final disconnect message is often only a symptom.
Troubleshoot the failures that stop players joining

Keep a private Soulrend server secure
- Enable the whitelist before sharing the address, and remove names when friends no longer need access.
- Use strong, unique credentials for the host panel and operating-system account; do not post console access in chat.
- Apply operating-system and Java security updates without replacing the modpack files.
- Expose only the game port publicly. Restrict remote administration to trusted addresses or a private management network.
- Schedule backups and periodically verify that a backup can actually be restored on a test copy.
- Keep the live server directory separate from downloads and personal files to limit accidental exposure.
Launch checklist
- Select one Soulrend release and note its release number.
- Download the corresponding official CurseForge server pack.
- Prepare a supported 64-bit Java runtime and a dedicated directory with sufficient storage.
- Extract the complete pack and use its supplied launch script or documented command.
- Run once, accept the EULA in
eula.txt, and restart. - Set difficulty, view distance, whitelist, and port in
server.properties. - Allocate at least 6 GB; target 10 GB while leaving room for the operating system and other services.
- Configure the firewall, router forwarding, or managed-host address.
- Have every player install the identical Soulrend release and Forge 1.20.1 client profile.
- Back up the world before adding players, changing settings, or updating the pack.
- Watch the console and
latest.logduring the first multiplayer exploration session.
For a small group that wants control, a properly sized home machine, VPS, or dedicated server works well when backups and networking are handled carefully. For the shortest setup, a managed host with a verified one-click Soulrend installer reduces administration, but you still need to confirm the exact pack version, memory allocation, backups, and terms before deployment.
