Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The easiest way to host Society: Sunlit Valley is a managed Minecraft Java server with a one-click modpack installer. For full control, download the matching SERVER-PACK from CurseForge, run its supplied startup script on a Forge 1.20.1 server, allow Java through your firewall, and forward TCP port 25565. Plan on 6–8 GB of RAM for a small private group and at least 10 GB for a public server; those figures are hosting-provider recommendations, not an official requirement published by the modpack author.
What Society: Sunlit Valley requires
Society: Sunlit Valley is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack built for Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1. A Bedrock server, a vanilla Java server, or a different Minecraft version will not load the pack correctly. Every player must install the same modpack release as the server.

- Server files: The release-specific CurseForge SERVER-PACK, not the client download used by a launcher.
- Java: FadeHost identifies Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20.1. This is a third-party hosting claim; the CurseForge pages reviewed do not state an official Java requirement.
- Network port: TCP 25565 is the conventional port identified for this pack by FadeHost.
Choose the server release first. CurseForge listings do not present a single unambiguous “latest” version: one listing is titled SERVER-PACK 3.1.1, another is titled 4.0.8, and a search summary refers to a newer 4.1.5A main release associated with file 8082974. Open the pack’s Files tab immediately before downloading and select one specific release. Do not mix a server pack, client installation, and configuration files from different releases.
Managed hosting or self-hosting?
Both routes work, but they solve different problems. Managed hosting puts the operating system, Java process, storage, firewall controls and backups behind a web panel. Self-hosting gives you direct access to every file and setting but makes you responsible for maintenance and connectivity.

For a first server or a group that wants to play immediately, managed hosting is the lower-risk route. Self-hosting is appropriate when you already administer a Linux or Windows machine, need custom scripts, or want complete control over files and scheduling.
Route 1: install it with a managed host
Several providers document one-click or search-based modpack installation. CreeperHost describes adding a Minecraft Java instance, naming it, searching for “Society: Sunlit Valley,” selecting a version and clicking Install. Wabbanode, BoxToPlay and Kinetic describe comparable workflows; Wabbanode’s instructions search for Society: Sunlit Valley or “Chakyl,” select a version, install it and start the instance.
- Create a Java instance. In the provider’s game panel, choose Minecraft Java Edition rather than a vanilla, Bedrock or unrelated Forge template.
- Choose a memory plan. Use the RAM guidance below rather than assuming the smallest plan is sufficient.
- Open the modpack installer. Search for the exact pack name, “Society: Sunlit Valley.” If the panel uses the pack author’s name, “Chakyl” may also appear in the results.
- Select one release. Match the version your players will install. If the panel and CurseForge show different release numbers, stop and resolve that mismatch before starting the server.
- Install and wait for completion. The panel should download the server-side files and create the instance. Do not upload the ordinary client zip over the generated server directory.
- Start once and read the console. Follow any EULA prompt, watch for a successful “done” message, and stop the server if the console reports a missing dependency or a version mismatch.
- Set access controls. Add your operator account, enable a whitelist for a private group, and change the default server name and message in the panel’s configuration or file manager.
- Give players the matching client pack. Each player should install the same Society: Sunlit Valley release through their launcher. A different pack version can produce missing-mod, registry or connection errors.
Before inviting players to explore, Game Host Bros recommends running chunk pre-generation. Generating terrain during peak play can consume CPU, memory and disk bandwidth and make everyone’s game stutter. Use the pre-generation method supported by the installed pack and test it while nobody is connected; the provider’s recommendation does not specify a particular mod or command.
Route 2: self-host the server pack
1. Select and download the correct SERVER-PACK
Open the Society: Sunlit Valley files on CurseForge and verify the release label, Minecraft version and file type. Examples of release-specific pages include SERVER-PACK file 6783957 and SERVER-PACK file 7275740. The pack’s general server information is also described by FadeHost.
CurseForge publishes separate SERVER-PACK archives for individual releases. Download the archive explicitly marked SERVER-PACK. The client zip downloaded by a launcher is a manifest and client installation; it is not a runnable dedicated server. A server pack normally contains the mod jars, configuration files and a startup script.

2. Prepare an empty server directory
Create a new folder dedicated to this release, such as society-sunlit-valley-4.x. Avoid extracting over an older release. Keeping each release in its own folder makes rollback and comparison possible and prevents stale mods from remaining after an update.

On Windows, use an archive utility that preserves nested directories. On Linux, extract as the account that will run the server so the process can read and write its own files.
3. Verify Java
Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime if your pack’s documentation or hosting environment calls for it. FadeHost lists Java 17 for Minecraft 1.20.1, but that recommendation is not an official requirement shown on the CurseForge pages reviewed. Check the runtime from a terminal or command prompt:
java -versionConfirm that the command resolves to Java 17 and that the server account can execute it. If the command is not found, install Java 17 or use the full path to the Java executable in the supplied startup script. Do not silently substitute an unrelated Java version when diagnosing a launch failure.
4. Run the included startup script
Use the script shipped inside the server pack rather than inventing a command. It may be a Windows batch file or a Unix shell script. The exact command is release-dependent and was not confirmed in the available documentation, so check the pack’s CurseForge description or its server-pack readme for the filename and any required arguments.

- Open a terminal in the extracted server directory.
- On Windows, run the included
.batscript. On Linux or macOS, make the supplied.shscript executable and run it from that directory. - Read the console output. The first launch may create configuration files and stop for the Minecraft EULA.
- Open
eula.txt, read the license, and change onlyeula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree to it. - Run the same supplied script again and wait for the server to finish starting.
Never copy a startup command from another Forge pack without checking its arguments. Forge, Java memory flags and script names can differ between releases.
5. Configure the server
Stop the server cleanly from its console before editing files. In server.properties, set a descriptive motd, choose whether the server is private, and leave the default port unless you have a reason to change it. Use the server console to grant operator status to your account and enable a whitelist for a private group. Keep the exact mod and configuration files that shipped with your chosen release unless the pack author’s notes instruct otherwise.
6. Allow local connections through the firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the Java server process or for TCP port 25565 on the host machine. Test from the same computer first with the server’s local address. If the local client cannot connect, fix the Java process, pack files or firewall before changing router settings.
7. Forward TCP 25565 for friends outside your home
FadeHost identifies TCP 25565 as the server port. A friend on another network cannot reach a private address such as 192.168.x.x; your router must forward that port to the computer running the server.

- Give the server computer a stable address on your home network, preferably through a DHCP reservation.
- Sign in to the router’s administration page and find its port-forwarding, NAT or virtual-server section.
- Create a rule for TCP, external port
25565, forwarding to the server computer’s internal address and port25565. - Save the rule and ensure the host firewall permits the same traffic.
- Have a friend test using your public IP address and port, not the internal address. Do not publish your public IP unnecessarily.
Router menus differ, and some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding even when your rule is correct. In that case, ask the provider for a public IPv4 address or use managed hosting instead. If your public address changes, players will need the new address unless you arrange a supported dynamic-DNS solution.

How much RAM should the server have?
No official RAM requirement from the Society: Sunlit Valley author was identified. Hosting providers publish different recommendations, so treat them as operational guidance rather than a specification.

A practical starting budget from these conflicting figures is 6–8 GB for a small private group and 10 GB or more for a public server. Increase the allocation when many players explore different areas, when pregeneration is running, or when the console reports out-of-memory conditions. Allocate only what the machine can spare: leaving no memory for the operating system can cause swapping and worse performance than a slightly smaller, stable allocation.
Watch memory use after several hours, not only immediately after startup. A quiet server can appear healthy while exploration, automation and chunk generation create the real load. Record the player count and activities when deciding whether to move to a larger plan.
Keeping a public server usable
Pre-generate terrain before opening the world
Terrain generation is one of the most expensive moments for a modded server. Run the pack-compatible chunk pre-generation process during a maintenance window, then let players explore an already-created area. Game Host Bros specifically recommends pre-generation to avoid creating chunks under player load.
Back up before every change
Stop the server before copying the world, config, mods and script directories. Keep at least one backup from before each pack update and another rotating backup from normal operation. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, so periodically test it on a separate directory or machine.

Change one variable at a time
When diagnosing a crash, do not simultaneously change Java, RAM, mods and configuration. Save the latest log, note the exact pack release, then test one change. This preserves a usable comparison and makes it easier to identify a mismatched jar or setting.
Keep every player on the same release
Server and client mod lists are a matched set. When updating, stop the server, back up the world, install the new server pack in a new directory, and give players the corresponding client release. Keep the old directory until the new one has started and a test account can join.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The server closes immediately
- Confirm that you downloaded SERVER-PACK rather than the launcher’s client archive.
- Run
java -versionand verify the Java version expected by the pack environment; Java 17 is the third-party recommendation for this 1.20.1 pack. - Run the supplied script from the extracted directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Read the first error in the console and the latest log instead of guessing a new startup command.
The console reports a missing mod or registry mismatch
- Compare the server release with each player’s client release.
- Remove leftover files from an older pack by reinstalling into a clean directory.
- Do not add or remove individual jars unless the release documentation specifically calls for it.
Players on the same home network can join, but internet friends cannot
- Check that the host firewall allows Java and TCP 25565.
- Confirm the router forwards TCP, not only UDP, to the correct internal address.
- Test with the public address from a genuinely external network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or a changed public IP if forwarding appears correct.
The server lags when new areas are explored
- Run chunk pre-generation before peak play.
- Check memory and CPU during exploration rather than while the server is idle.
- Reduce simultaneous exploration or move to the larger RAM tier recommended for public servers.
An update makes the world fail to load
- Stop the server and restore the pre-update backup.
- Confirm that the downloaded server pack and all clients use the same release.
- Keep the prior server directory intact while testing the update in a separate folder.
Recommended setup decision
Use managed hosting when you want the shortest path from purchase to a joinable server, do not want to configure port forwarding, or need an always-on machine and panel-managed backups. Choose self-hosting when you can maintain Java and the operating system, need direct file and script access, and accept responsibility for uptime, backups and network troubleshooting.
Whichever route you choose, the non-negotiable details are the same: Minecraft Java Edition, Forge 1.20.1, the exact release-matched SERVER-PACK, Java 17 where required by your environment, enough memory for your player count, and TCP port 25565 reachable from outside your network.
