To host Forge Labs’ Zombie Apocalypse (SLOW ZOMBIES) pack for friends, install the matching Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge server files, run the server once, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and then test locally before forwarding the server port. The pack is the Mustard Virus by Forge Labs project for Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. You can run it on your own computer or use a managed host that offers the exact pack in its installer.
What the Slow Zombies pack is
“Slow Zombies” is the server variant of Forge Labs’ Mustard Virus zombie-apocalypse modpack. CurseForge lists it for Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Its infected mobs are designed to react to light, sound and players, so ordinary survival habits—lighting a base, opening a door or making noise—can attract danger.

The project page recorded 4,688,586 downloads in 2021. The matching server archive is named Minecraft+Zombie+Server.zip, supports Minecraft 1.12.2, is approximately 139.0 MB, and was uploaded on 23 March 2021. The latest release listed for the project is Mustard Virus 2.1 for Minecraft 1.12.2, dated 31 October 2021. Those dates describe the listed files, not a promise of current maintenance, so keep every player on the same release.
This is a Forge pack. A Fabric server, a vanilla server JAR or a different Minecraft version will not load the same mods. The client installation and server installation must use compatible Minecraft, Forge and pack versions.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the files and world, but you are responsible for Java, firewall rules, router configuration, backups and uptime. Managed hosting charges a recurring fee but usually provides a control panel, automated installation and provider support.

For a small group with a spare computer and someone comfortable with router settings, self-hosting is practical. Choose managed hosting when you need an always-on server, a data-center location, a guided installer or support with the operating system and network.
Requirements before you install
- A computer that can run Minecraft 1.12.2 and the modded server at the same time.
- A Java runtime compatible with Java 8. Forge’s 1.12.x documentation states that Minecraft and Forge compile against Java 8; use a Java 8-compatible runtime for this legacy pack rather than assuming a current Java release will work.
- The matching
Minecraft+Zombie+Server.ziparchive from the pack’s CurseForge files. - Several gigabytes of free disk space beyond the 139.0 MB download for extracted libraries, configuration files, logs and the world save.
- Administrator access to create a firewall rule and, for internet play, access to the router that controls the host’s connection.
- A separate server folder. Do not unpack a legacy Forge server into a general Downloads folder or into your client’s instance directory.
Close other heavy applications while testing. The required memory depends on the number of players, loaded chunks, view distance and entity count; allocate enough for the pack without leaving the operating system starved. Start conservatively, observe the console and system memory, then adjust.
Install the server pack on your own computer
1. Create an isolated server folder
Create a new directory dedicated to this world, such as SlowZombiesServer. Keep the archive, launch files, logs, configuration and world save in that directory. An isolated folder makes backups and rollback straightforward and prevents files from another modpack being mixed in.
2. Download the matching archive
Download the server archive named Minecraft+Zombie+Server.zip from the Mustard Virus project’s CurseForge files. Check that the archive is the 1.12.2 server package, not a client profile or a different release. Extract all of its contents directly into the new server folder. Preserve the directory structure; moving only a few JAR files out of the archive commonly produces an incomplete installation.

3. Verify Java 8 compatibility
Open a terminal in the server folder and check the runtime reported by your system:

java -versionThe output should identify a Java 8-compatible runtime. If the command is missing or reports an incompatible major version, install a Java 8 runtime and either update the system path or use the full path to that runtime in your launch script. Keep the server’s Java choice documented so a later update does not silently switch it to a newer, incompatible release.
4. Run the supplied Forge entry point
Use the launch script or Forge server entry point included with the archive. Do not replace it with a vanilla Minecraft JAR. If the package provides a Forge server JAR and your platform requires a manual command, the pattern is:
java -jar <forge-server-jar> noguiReplace the angle-bracketed value only inside your local command with the actual Forge server filename. The nogui option avoids the graphical server window when the launcher supports it and leaves the console visible for diagnostics. On Windows, run the supplied batch file if one is included; on Linux or macOS, use the supplied shell script and ensure it is executable.
5. Accept the Minecraft EULA
The first run normally creates eula.txt and stops. Forge documents this behavior, and Minecraft Help gives the same procedure. Open the generated file, change:

eula=trueSave the file, then run the same Forge launch command again. If the server still exits immediately, confirm that you edited the eula.txt in the active server directory rather than a duplicate file elsewhere.
Configure server.properties
After the first successful start, stop the server from its console with the normal stop command and edit server.properties. Make a copy of the file and the world folder before changing world-affecting settings.

Leave mod-generated configuration files intact unless the pack documentation or an identified error tells you to change one. Never edit a configuration while the server is running; stop it first so the process does not overwrite your changes.
Start and test the server before inviting friends
- Start the Forge server with the supplied launcher or your validated Forge command and keep the console open.
- Wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading. Watch for missing-mod, dependency, Java or registry errors rather than assuming that an open window means success.
- From Minecraft 1.12.2 with the same Forge and pack release, connect on the host computer using
localhost. - Walk around, place and break blocks, leave and rejoin, and allow the server to save. This verifies that the world can be written and that the pack actually loaded.
- From another device on the same home network, connect using the host computer’s local IP address. A successful LAN test separates Forge or mod problems from router and internet problems.
- Stop the server cleanly, copy the world folder and key configuration files to a backup location, then start it again before public play.
If the client reports missing mods during the local test, fix the installation before changing any port or firewall setting. Networking cannot repair a client/server pack mismatch.
Let friends connect over the internet
Open the operating-system firewall
Allow the Java runtime or the Forge server process through the host computer’s firewall on the network profile you use. If you create a port rule instead, allow the TCP port listed in server.properties; the default is 25565. Restrict the rule to the necessary network scope where your firewall supports that option.

Forward the server port on the router
Minecraft Help states that operators may need to forward the port listed in server.properties for outside connections. Sign in to the router, find its port-forwarding or virtual-server section, and forward the chosen external port to the host computer’s fixed local IP address and the same internal port. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so follow the current manual for your exact model.
Reserve the host computer’s local address with the router’s DHCP reservation feature when available. Otherwise, a later address change can silently break the forwarding rule. Do not expose administrative services or unrelated ports just to make Minecraft work.
Give players the correct address
Players on the same LAN use the host’s local address and port. Players on the internet need the reachable public address and the configured port, for example public-address:25565 when you kept the default. Give that address only to people you trust. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary forwarding may not work; in that case use a managed host or a network solution designed for private game access rather than opening random ports.
Test from outside your network
Have a friend on a different internet connection try while you watch the server console. If LAN connections work but the outside test fails, recheck the configured port, firewall profile, router destination address and whether your public address has changed. Keep the server stopped while changing router rules, then restart it and test again.

mTxServ documents a three-step installation flow: choose a plan, open the installer, search for Zombie Apocalypse (SLOW ZOMBIES) by Forge Labs, and click install. After installation, use the panel’s console to confirm that Forge starts without dependency errors, set the player limit and other server properties, and create a backup before inviting players. Check the current plan terms and supported regions because availability is not permanent.
Questions to ask any provider
- Is the exact Mustard Virus release for Minecraft 1.12.2 available, or only a similarly named pack?
- Can you upload and download the complete world and configuration files?
- Are automated backups included, how many versions are retained, and can you restore a single world?
- Which Java runtime does the panel use for Forge 1.12.2?
- What player slots, CPU resources and memory allocation are included?
- Where are the data centers, and what happens if the provider removes support for this old Forge version?
- Can you change the server port, view distance and other properties without opening a support ticket?
Backups, updates and safe maintenance
Make consistent backups
Stop the server before copying the world directory so region files are not changing during the backup. Keep at least one copy on a different disk or machine. Back up server.properties, the config directory, the mods directory and any provider-specific files along with the world. Test a restoration on a separate folder; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Record the Minecraft version, Forge version, pack release and any manually added configuration. Every player should use Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge and the same pack release. Do not update a single client or server independently. If you change versions, stop the server, make a full backup, update the server and client together, and test the copied world before touching the live save.
Control performance changes
Start by lowering view-distance and reducing the player or entity load when the server lags. Watch CPU, memory, disk and network use while players are online. Allocate additional memory only when the machine has it available; assigning nearly all physical RAM can make the operating system page or stall. Schedule backups when few players are online, and never change world-generation settings on the live save without a tested copy.
Troubleshooting

Keep the complete console log from a failed start. The first error and its accompanying mod name are usually more useful than the final shutdown message. Fix one change at a time, restart, and record what changed so you can undo it.
