Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
Host Shivrs’ Ascendency with its dedicated AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip, running Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and Java 21. Extract the server pack into a clean directory, accept the EULA after the first launch, start with about 6–8 GB of allocated memory, then configure networking and make every client use the identical pack release. The latest listed release is v0.6.1, dated January 17, 2026; release files and requirements can change, so confirm the current files page before downloading.
Compatibility checklist before you download
A modded server only works reliably when the server pack, Minecraft version, mod loader, Java runtime and client installation agree. Record these values before creating a directory or copying files:
| Item | Value for the current release | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Modpack | Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1 | The server and every player must use the same release. |
| Minecraft | 1.21.1 | A different Minecraft version can prevent NeoForge from loading or cause registry mismatches. |
| Loader | NeoForge | Do not substitute Forge, Fabric or another loader. |
| Server archive | AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip |
This is the dedicated server download, not the normal client ZIP. |
| Java | Java 21 | The 1.21.1 setup reference identifies Java 21 for this server. |
| Memory starting point | 6–8 GB RAM | This is operational guidance, not a guaranteed requirement or player-capacity promise. |
The project is marked Extra Large and contains hundreds of mods, custom datapacks and resourcepacks. Treat it like a substantial modded installation: use a fast SSD, leave memory for the operating system, and expect a longer first startup than a vanilla server.
Get the correct server pack
Use the official files listing
Open the official Shivrs’ Ascendency project on CurseForge and select the files for Minecraft 1.21.1. In the server-pack section, download AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zip. The project page identifies itself as the current official Ascendency page and asks users not to redistribute the pack on other platforms, so avoid mirrors and repackaged archives.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Check the filename and version before extracting. A client archive may contain a launcher-oriented layout and is not a replacement for the dedicated server pack. Likewise, do not combine a v0.6.1 server directory with mods or configuration copied from another release. If the files page now shows a newer version, use that version consistently instead of treating v0.6.1 as permanent.
Create an isolated server directory
- Create a new directory used only for this world, such as
Shivrs-Ascendency-Server. - Copy the downloaded ZIP into that directory.
- Extract the archive there, preserving its folder structure. Do not run the server from inside the ZIP and do not nest the files several levels deep unless the supplied script expects that layout.
- Keep the original ZIP outside the live world directory as a recovery copy, and record the release, Minecraft version and NeoForge version in a text file.
Use a local disk with enough free space for the extracted mods, generated world, logs, backups and future update copy. The pack’s large mod and resource collection means storage can grow substantially as players explore new terrain.
Install and verify Java 21
Check the runtime that the server will actually use
Open a terminal or Command Prompt and run:
java -version
The output should identify Java 21. On machines with multiple Java installations, checking the system default is not enough: the startup script may point to a different executable. Inspect the script’s Java command or configure its Java path so it explicitly selects the Java 21 executable.
On Windows, install a 64-bit Java 21 distribution, then either place its bin directory on PATH or edit the supplied Windows startup script to use the full path to java.exe. On Linux, install a 64-bit Java 21 package through the distribution’s supported package manager, select it as the active runtime if several versions are installed, and verify again from the server directory. The exact package name varies by distribution; the important result is that the launch process reports Java 21.
Why an older Java can fail
Launching with Java 17 or an older runtime may produce class-version errors, fail during NeoForge initialization or stop while loading a mod. Installing Java 21 does not automatically change a script that contains a hard-coded path, so verify the executable used by the script rather than assuming the newest installation is selected.
Complete the first boot and EULA
Run the supplied startup script
From the extracted directory, run the pack’s supplied Windows or Linux startup script. The first launch normally creates the EULA file, configuration files, logs and initial server structure before stopping. A large pack can appear idle while NeoForge and its mods are being prepared; watch the console and log rather than interrupting it immediately.

Accept the EULA deliberately
- Open the generated

- Change only the setting from
eula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree. - Save the file and run the same startup script again.
If the server still reports that the EULA has not been accepted, check that you edited the eula.txt in the active server directory, saved the file as plain text, and did not create a second copy in a nested folder. Keep the console open during the second boot; successful initialization should eventually leave a running server prompt rather than returning immediately to the shell.
Configure the world before inviting players
Set the core properties
Stop the server cleanly, then open server.properties. Change settings before generating a long-term world where possible. The most useful entries for a private group are:
| Setting | Decision to make | Operational note |
|---|---|---|
level-name |
Choose the world folder name. | Changing it later points the server at a different world; back up the old folder first. |
difficulty |
Select the intended difficulty. | Coordinate this with the group’s rules before players begin. |
view-distance |
Choose how many chunks players can see. | Higher values increase network traffic, chunk work and memory pressure. |
simulation-distance |
Choose how far active game logic runs. | Reducing it can protect tick performance on a busy or modest machine. |
white-list |
Enable it for a private server. | Add trusted players from the console or the appropriate server command. |
server-port |
Keep the chosen TCP port or select an unused one. | The router and firewall must allow the same port. |
Do not edit world or mod configuration while the process is running. Stop the server, copy the world and configuration to a dated backup location, make one change, then boot and test. This makes it possible to identify which setting caused a problem.
Use a sensible first-world workflow
- Start with the default world-generation settings supplied by the pack unless the project documentation requires a particular seed or option.
- Let the server finish generating the spawn area before several players join at once.
- Have one operator test movement, inventories, dimensions, machines and major progression systems before opening the whitelist.
- Record any changed properties and mod configuration in a changelog so an update can be reproduced.
Allocate memory and tune Java carefully
Start with 6–8 GB, then measure
A current modpack-hosting guide cites 6–8 GB as a practical starting range for this pack. It is not a laboratory requirement and does not establish a fixed number of players. Start within that range if the host has sufficient physical RAM, then observe startup time, garbage-collection pauses, tick time, swap activity and the operating system’s remaining memory as the world and player count grow.

The operating system, file cache, launcher, monitoring tools and any voice or backup services also need headroom. A machine with 8 GB total cannot safely give the server 8 GB; use a smaller allocation or a host with more physical memory. If the process is killed by the operating system, the machine is swapping heavily, or other services become unresponsive, reduce the allocation or move the server to a larger host.

-XX:+UseZGC-XX:+ZGenerational-XX:+AlwaysPreTouch- parallel reference-processing flags
These options are not a substitute for Java 21 and should be added only when the installed Java build accepts them. Put them in the startup script’s JVM-options section, preserving the existing memory flags. Make one change at a time and retain a plain fallback command with the extra options removed. If the server exits before loading, reports an unrecognized option or behaves worse, revert to the fallback and diagnose from there.
-XX:+AlwaysPreTouch can make startup take longer because memory pages are prepared up front. That delay is different from a hung process; compare console output and CPU activity before stopping it. ZGC-related options can also change behavior between Java builds, which is why the exact Java 21 version and a reversible configuration matter.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Recognize memory pressure
- Long pauses during exploration: lower view or simulation distance, check for swap use, and inspect the log for repeated garbage-collection warnings.
- Slow initial startup: allow extra time for first-run mod loading, verify the server is on an SSD, and test without optional JVM flags.
- Steady growth after hours: record player count, loaded dimensions and automation activity; restart only after a clean stop and preserve logs for comparison.
- Out-of-memory termination: confirm the Java heap limit, available physical RAM and whether another process consumed memory before increasing the allocation.
Make a home-hosted server reachable
Configure the operating-system firewall
Allow the Java server process, or the selected TCP server port, through the host firewall. Create the narrowest rule that works: the correct protocol, port and network profile. Avoid disabling the firewall globally as a shortcut. Test locally first by connecting from a second device on the same network using the host’s private address.
Forward the port on the router
- Give the server computer a stable private IP address, preferably through a DHCP reservation.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the configured
server-portTCP port to that private IP. - Ensure the operating-system firewall rule and router rule use the same port.
- Have a player test from outside the home network, such as a mobile connection. Testing only from inside may succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
- Share the public address only after the external test works; never publish a private LAN address to remote players.
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding. In that case, a direct home-hosted address may not be possible without a provider-supported public address or a different hosting arrangement. Keep the server port private, enable the whitelist, and avoid exposing administrative interfaces to the internet.
Install the matching client on every player
Each player should install Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, using a launcher that supports the pack. The client must match the server’s release, loader and Minecraft version; “almost the same” is not sufficient when mods add blocks, items, dimensions or network packets.
- Remove or disable older copies of the pack before creating the matching profile.
- Do not add optional client mods until the base pack connects successfully.
- Use the server’s address and port exactly as configured.
- When a connection fails, compare the client and server logs for the first missing mod, version mismatch or registry error rather than reinstalling randomly.
If one player can connect and another cannot, compare launcher profiles, Java versions, enabled resourcepacks and the exact mod list. A server-side update requires every client to update before joining; mixing releases can corrupt assumptions about the world and network protocol.

Backups, updates and safe operations
Stop before copying a world
Use the server’s normal stop command or console control and wait for the process to finish writing chunks. Copying a live world can capture partially written region files. Back up the world directory, server.properties, whitelist and the pack’s configuration directories. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine and label it with the date and release.
Stage every pack update
- Duplicate the live server directory or restore a recent backup into a test directory.
- Install the new server pack version in the test copy, following its supplied instructions.
- Start it with the intended Java 21 runtime and inspect the logs for migration errors.
- Join with clients matching the new release and test inventories, dimensions, machines, quests and custom progression.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule downtime, make a fresh live backup and apply the update.
Never overwrite a working world with a new pack archive before preserving the old directory. If an update changes world data or removes a mod, a rollback may require restoring both the world and its previous configuration, not merely replacing a few JAR files.
Keep access controlled
Enable the whitelist for a private community, grant operator privileges to as few people as possible, and do not share console credentials. Review logs after crashes, unexpected joins or repeated authentication failures. A small server is still an internet-facing service once its port is forwarded.
What the pack adds, and why it affects hosting
Shivrs’ Ascendency is more than a collection of unrelated mods. The author describes a custom boss log, hundreds of balance and mod changes, Create integration, new accessories and weapons, skill upgrades, travel options, backpacks, and extensive custom datapacks and resourcepacks. These systems can make a long-running multiplayer world feel cohesive, but each additional subsystem contributes to loading work, disk use, configuration complexity or tick activity.
The project owner, SHlVRS, describes the direction this way: “Ascendency Started Out As A Small Pack Made For A 2 Week Minecraft Phase… But Now, It’s A Massive Adventure Built Around Being Fun First, With Tons Of Custom Content!” That emphasis on custom progression is a reason to preserve the exact release and back up the world before experimenting with configuration changes.
Monitor performance during the activities your group actually performs. A quiet spawn test does not represent several players generating terrain, running Create machinery, changing dimensions and using custom systems simultaneously. Increase view distance or memory only after measuring the effect on tick time and host stability.

Self-hosting versus a managed server
Self-hosting provides direct control over files, backups, Java and networking, but the owner is responsible for every part of operation. A managed host can simplify installation and support, yet it introduces a recurring bill and provider-specific limits. Compare the exact NeoForge release and current pack support rather than assuming a listing for “modpacks” includes this one.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted at home or on your own machine | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | No separate server subscription, but you provide hardware, electricity and internet service. | Recurring fee; verify the advertised RAM, CPU allocation, storage and renewal price. |
| Setup | You install Java, extract the pack, configure firewall rules and forward a port. | The provider may offer one-click installation, updates or preconfigured 1.21.1 NeoForge images. |
| Performance | Depends on your CPU, SSD, memory, network and other processes. | Depends on shared or dedicated resources and the provider’s hardware tier; advertised RAM alone is not a benchmark. |
| Latency | Usually best for players near the host’s home connection, subject to upload quality and routing. | Choose a region close to the majority of players and check actual network latency. |
| Backups | You design, schedule and test your own backups. | Check retention, restore steps, storage limits and whether backups are included or extra. |
| Updates | Full control and full responsibility; stage updates on a copy. | Some services advertise installation, testing or fixes; confirm that they support the exact release before relying on automation. |
| Access | Direct console, files and Java options. | Panel and file access vary; confirm you can edit properties and retrieve logs. |
| Support | You troubleshoot Java, NeoForge, mods and networking. | Support responsiveness and modpack expertise vary by provider; read the current terms. |
Whichever route you choose, verify current release support, region, pricing, backups and the pack’s licensing or redistribution requirements. The official project page’s request not to redistribute the pack means a hosting service should provide an authorized installation path rather than an unofficial mirror.
Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The script closes immediately
Run the script from an already-open terminal so the error remains visible. Check that Java 21 is selected, the script is executable on Linux, the working directory contains the extracted files, and the account can read and write the directory. Remove newly added JVM arguments and retry with the plain fallback command.
NeoForge reports missing or incompatible mods
Confirm that the server pack was used instead of a client archive, that every file came from the same release, and that no extra mod was copied into the mods directory. Compare the first error in the log with the pack version and Minecraft 1.21.1. Re-extracting a clean server pack is safer than deleting files based on guesswork.
Players time out while local connections work
Test the server from outside the LAN, then check the host firewall, router port-forward target, public address and whether the internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. Confirm that the server is listening on the configured port and that players are not using a stale address.
The server lags when players explore
Check CPU saturation, available memory, swap activity and disk latency. Temporarily lower view-distance and simulation-distance, stop heavy automation, and compare tick behavior with fewer players. Do not assume that adding RAM fixes a CPU, storage or network bottleneck.
An update breaks the existing world
Stop the server, preserve the failed directory and logs, and restore the matching world plus configuration from the pre-update backup. Test the new release on a copy before attempting another live migration. Avoid mixing individual files from two pack versions unless the pack’s own instructions explicitly require it.
Final operating checklist
- Release recorded: Shivrs’ Ascendency v0.6.1, or the current version confirmed on the official files page.
- Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge match on server and clients.
AscendencyServerpack0.6.1.zipextracted into a dedicated directory.- Java 21 verified by the actual startup script.
- EULA accepted in the active directory.
server.propertiesreviewed for world name, difficulty, distances, whitelist and port.- 6–8 GB starting allocation tested without starving the host operating system.
- Plain JVM fallback retained if optional ZGC arguments cause trouble.
- Firewall and router rules tested from outside the local network.
- Every player uses the identical release, Minecraft version and NeoForge loader.
- World and configuration backups created before changes or updates.
- Updates tested on a copy before touching the live world.
With those controls in place, a self-hosted Shivrs’ Ascendency server is a manageable project: the dedicated pack removes much of the manual mod assembly, while deliberate Java selection, conservative memory sizing, tested networking and disciplined backups address the risks introduced by an Extra Large, heavily customized pack.
