Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
You can host Rust without changing your home router, but the method depends on who needs to connect. For a public server, rent a managed Rust server with its own Internet address. For a private friends-only server, put the host and every player on a mesh VPN that can relay blocked UDP traffic. For a custom relay, use Facepunch’s RustRelay design or a VPS, but expect substantially more engineering.
Port forwarding is only one way to make Rust’s UDP game and query traffic reachable. It is not required when the server runs outside your home network or when an overlay network carries the traffic between invited players.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat “without port forwarding” really means
A Rust dedicated server normally listens for game traffic and server-query traffic on UDP ports. Administrative RCON traffic and Rust+ communication use TCP. A router that performs NAT normally blocks unsolicited inbound connections, so Facepunch says that people connecting from outside your network will most likely need port forwarding when the server is behind a router.
Removing the router rule does not remove the reachability requirement. You still need a network path from each player to the server’s configured ports. That path can be supplied by a hosting provider, a private mesh VPN, or a relay architecture.

Why CGNAT makes home hosting difficult
Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) places many customers behind one ISP address. Your router may show a private or shared WAN address rather than the public address visible on the Internet. In that situation, a normal port-forwarding rule cannot create an inbound path because the ISP’s upstream NAT is outside your control. Some ISPs also block inbound ports or do not provide a public IPv4 address.
Check the router’s WAN address and compare it with the address shown by a reputable “what is my IP” page. A mismatch, or a WAN address in a private or shared-address range, is a strong indication of double NAT or CGNAT. Ask the ISP whether a public address or an IPv6 service is available, but do not assume that changing to IPv6 will solve Rust connectivity: every player, firewall, and server must support the same path.

| Architecture | Who can join | UDP support | Player-browser visibility | Player installation | Administration | Typical cost pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed Rust hosting | Anyone you allow, using a public endpoint | Provider must expose Rust’s game and query UDP ports | Usually the best option for a public server; confirm listing support | No overlay client required | Control panel, updates, backups and moderation are handled or assisted by the host | Recurring monthly charge; exact price, slots and features vary by provider |
| Mesh VPN with relay fallback | Invited players who install and join the overlay | Works when the overlay can relay blocked UDP; test actual gameplay | Not a replacement for a public server listing | Every player needs the VPN client and network access | You manage the server and the private network | May fit within an existing plan; current limits and pricing must be checked with the VPN provider |
| RustRelay or self-managed VPS relay | Players routed through your relay design | Possible, but implementation must carry Rust traffic correctly | Depends on your implementation | May require a custom client or connection workflow | High: relay code, authentication, monitoring, bandwidth and security | VPS and bandwidth charges plus engineering time |
| HTTP reverse tunnel | Not automatically suitable | Rust requires UDP game/query traffic, so HTTP-only tunneling is not enough | Usually unsuitable | Varies | Can be complex without solving the protocol requirement | Service-dependent |
Option 1: use managed Rust hosting for a public server
A managed host places the dedicated server in a data center with a public address. Your home router is no longer part of the inbound path, so friends can connect without a port-forwarding rule. This is the practical choice when strangers should be able to find the server, when you need many players, or when you do not want every player to install a network client.
What to compare before paying
- Rust compatibility: Confirm that the service runs the current Rust Dedicated Server build and lets you select the server branch or update policy you need.
- Ports: Verify that the plan exposes both the configured game UDP port and query UDP port. Ask how RCON and Rust+ TCP traffic are secured and whether those ports can be restricted.
- Player capacity: Slot limits are plan-specific. A high CPU or memory allocation does not necessarily mean the provider permits more players.
- Location and latency: Choose a region close to most players. Ask for the data-center location rather than relying only on a marketing label.
- Backups and wipe controls: Check whether you can schedule, download and restore backups, and whether a wipe can be performed without deleting configuration or plugins.
- Mod and plugin support: If you use a modded server, confirm the supported framework, file access and update process. Do not assume that an unmodified server plan supports every plugin.
- DDoS protection: Facepunch’s guidance for hidden servers emphasizes capable hosting and strong DDoS protection. Ask what is included, whether protection covers the game and query ports, and whether an attack triggers suspension.
- Administration: Look for console access, log download, scheduled restarts, owner and moderator controls, and a way to change the endpoint or migrate the server.
- Region, billing and limits: Record the recurring price, tax treatment, cancellation terms, storage allowance and any overage charges. No single price or slot count applies to all hosts.
Deployment procedure
- Select a region and a plan with enough slots, CPU, memory and storage for your intended population. Start smaller if the provider permits upgrades without rebuilding.
- Choose a Rust Dedicated Server installation. Facepunch’s official installation path uses SteamCMD and Rust Dedicated Server App ID
258550; a managed panel normally performs this installation for you. - Set the server identity, hostname, map or procedural-world settings, maximum players and wipe schedule. Keep the identity stable so the server’s world and configuration are not accidentally replaced during an update.
- Record the public hostname or IP address and every port shown by the panel. The game port and query port are UDP; RCON and Rust+ are TCP when enabled.
- Start the server and wait for the console to report that the world is loaded. Use the provider’s console or log view to catch map-generation, plugin or port errors.
- Connect from a machine outside the hosting network. In Rust, use the console connection method with the provider’s address and configured game port, or use the server browser if the provider supports public listing.
- Invite a second player to test a different ISP or mobile connection. Confirm joining, loading into the world, voice or Rust+ features you use, and ordinary gameplay before advertising the server.
What you still have to manage
Managed hosting removes router work, not server administration. You remain responsible for administrator credentials, moderation, configuration, plugin compatibility, backups and compliance with Facepunch’s community-server rules. Keep the panel account protected with a unique password and multi-factor authentication when available. Restrict RCON to the provider’s secure access method; never publish an RCON password in a Discord message or configuration screenshot.
Option 2: a mesh VPN for a private friends-only server
A mesh VPN creates a private address for the server and the players. If direct UDP cannot pass between two members, a system such as Tailscale documents fallback to a Peer Relay or DERP relay. That can make a private connection possible even when a home router, CGNAT or an ISP blocks inbound traffic.

This design is appropriate when every invited player can install the overlay, sign in, and remain an approved member. It is not a substitute for a public Rust listing, and the VPN documentation does not certify Rust gameplay quality or a particular plan’s current limits. Test your actual group and measure latency before relying on it for a long wipe.
Requirements and preparation
- A computer capable of running the Rust dedicated server continuously.
- An account and network policy for the mesh VPN.
- A VPN client installed on the server and on every player’s computer.
- Operating-system firewall rules that allow the Rust server process to receive traffic on its configured UDP game and query ports from the VPN interface.
- A way to distribute the private server address only to approved players.
Setup steps
- Install SteamCMD on the server computer and authenticate as appropriate for the official Rust Dedicated Server installation. Install App ID
258550into a dedicated directory. Keep the SteamCMD directory separate from the server’s identity and save folders. - Install the mesh-VPN client on the server. Sign in, approve the device in the network administrator console, and note its private VPN address or stable device name.
- Install the same client on each invited player’s computer. Approve only the people who should reach the server. Do not publish the VPN network’s join link on a public server listing.
- Configure and launch the Rust server using its normal startup settings. Choose a game UDP port and a separate query UDP port that are not occupied by another service. If you enable RCON or Rust+, configure their TCP ports and protect them with strong credentials.
- On the server’s operating-system firewall, allow the Rust executable and the selected ports on the VPN network interface. Do not broadly allow those ports on every public interface just because the server is also connected to a home LAN.
- From a player computer, verify that the VPN client reports the server as reachable. Then connect directly using the VPN address and the configured game port. A direct console connection is a better first test than waiting for a browser listing.
- Have at least two players join at the same time. Walk around, open containers, fight and transfer items while watching latency and packet-loss indicators. A connection that succeeds is not necessarily stable enough for play.
- If direct UDP is blocked, check the VPN client’s path information to confirm that it is using a relay. A relayed path can work but may add latency or reduce throughput. If the experience is poor, move the server to managed hosting rather than assuming another router setting will fix it.
Limitations of the mesh approach
- Every player must install, authenticate to and keep the VPN client connected.
- The server is private to the overlay unless you separately provide a public endpoint.
- Server-browser discovery may not work as it does for a publicly reachable Rust server; direct connection is the dependable workflow.
- Relay availability, geographic placement, plan limits and performance can change. The VPN provider’s documentation explains connectivity behavior, not Rust-specific latency guarantees.
- Adding an untrusted player grants network access to whatever else you expose on that VPN. Use device approval, access rules and a dedicated server account.
Option 3: RustRelay or a self-managed VPS relay
Facepunch documents RustRelay as a relay architecture with a Rust-side relay and a recipient server. In broad terms, the player’s connection reaches a public relay, the relay authenticates or exchanges a token, and traffic is delivered to the server that may be behind NAT. This is not a one-click consumer tunnel.
What the architecture involves
- Public recipient endpoint: A VPS or other Internet-reachable machine accepts the relay side of the connection.
- Rust-side relay component: Software must understand the required Rust traffic and forward it without corrupting packets or breaking connection state.
- Authentication and token exchange: The relay and recipient server need a secure way to establish which client may connect. Tokens must expire or be revocable.
- Operations: You need monitoring, logs, updates, firewall rules, abuse controls, bandwidth accounting and a recovery plan if the VPS or relay address fails.
Choose this path only if you can implement and maintain network software. Validate compatibility against the current Rust server build, test reconnects and map changes, and calculate bandwidth for the maximum concurrent player count. A VPS address alone does not magically forward Rust traffic; it becomes useful only when the relay software carries the right UDP and related control traffic.

Do you need to forward port 28015?
Not necessarily. 28015 is commonly used in Rust examples, but the number is not a universal requirement. What matters is the game port configured for your particular server and the separate query port used by discovery or status tools.
| Traffic | Transport | What must be reachable |
|---|---|---|
| Rust gameplay | UDP | The server’s configured game port, through the managed host, VPN path or relay |
| Server query and discovery | UDP | The configured query port if you need status queries or listing behavior |
| RCON administration | TCP | Only when enabled; restrict access and protect the password |
| Rust+ | TCP | Only when enabled and supported by your chosen network design |
With managed hosting, the provider exposes the ports and gives you the endpoint. With a mesh VPN, players reach the server through its VPN address and you allow the ports on that interface. With RustRelay, the public relay must carry the traffic according to its implementation. In none of these cases does adding a DNS record remove the need for a reachable path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why common “tunnel” fixes fail
HTTP-only reverse tunnels
Many reverse-tunnel products are designed for web requests over HTTP or HTTPS. Rust’s documented server and query traffic uses UDP, so an HTTP tunnel cannot be assumed to work. Use a service only if its documentation explicitly supports the required Rust traffic, ports and connection behavior; otherwise it may make a web status page reachable while leaving the game unreachable.

DNS or a dynamic-DNS name
A DNS name translates a memorable name into an address. It does not create an inbound route through CGNAT, open a blocked firewall, or relay UDP. Use DNS after you have a working public endpoint, not as a replacement for one.
Opening random ports
Forwarding an arbitrary TCP port does not help a UDP game service. Guessing ports can also expose unrelated services. Identify the exact game and query ports in the server configuration and expose only what the chosen architecture requires.
Security and Facepunch compliance
Run the smallest reachable surface that supports your players. Keep the operating system, SteamCMD installation, Rust server and plugins updated. Use a separate service account where practical, restrict file permissions, and back up the server identity and configuration before updates or wipes.
Quick Recap
- Use a strong, unique RCON password and never reuse it for the hosting panel or VPN.
- Allow RCON and Rust+ only through the provider’s protected management path, a VPN access rule or a tightly restricted firewall.
- Approve only known devices on a private mesh network and remove players when access is no longer needed.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk space, bandwidth, crashes and repeated authentication failures.
- For a public server, select hosting with meaningful DDoS protection and a procedure for changing the address if it is attacked.
- Read and follow Facepunch’s community-server rules. Delisting or other sanctions are possible when a server violates those rules; a relay or hosted endpoint does not exempt you.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Players on the same home network can join, but outsiders cannot | NAT, CGNAT or an ISP firewall | Stop trying additional router rules if the WAN address is shared. Use managed hosting, a mesh VPN or a relay. |
| The VPN shows connected, but Rust cannot join | Wrong address, wrong port or host firewall | Use the server’s VPN address, confirm the configured game UDP port, and allow the Rust process on the VPN interface. |
| One player connects but another times out | Device approval, access policy or a blocked path | Confirm both devices are members of the overlay, inspect each path, and check whether one is using a relay or a restricted network. |
| Players join but the server is absent from the browser | Private VPN design or query-port problem | Connect directly first. If public listing is required, move to managed hosting and verify that the query UDP port is exposed. |
| Gameplay is rubber-banding over a VPN relay | Relay distance, congestion or packet loss | Measure latency and loss with the actual group, choose a closer server region, or use managed hosting. |
| RCON works locally but not remotely | TCP port, firewall or unsafe bind address | Confirm the configured TCP port, permit it only through the intended management path, and verify the password. Do not expose RCON broadly. |
| A hosted server updates but loses its world | Changed server identity or an incorrect wipe procedure | Keep the identity and save directory stable, verify backups, and ask the host how updates and wipes are separated. |
| A relay works until the server or player reconnects | Expired token or incomplete session handling | Review token lifetime, reconnect logic and relay logs. This is an implementation issue in a custom RustRelay design, not a port-forwarding setting. |
A practical decision checklist
- Define the audience. If unknown players must join without installing anything, choose managed hosting. If the group is small and trusted, a mesh VPN may be sufficient.
- Confirm the network constraint. Identify CGNAT, double NAT, blocked inbound ports or simply an unwillingness to edit the router. The constraint determines whether a home server can use a direct path.
- List the required Rust traffic. Record the game UDP port, query UDP port and any TCP ports for RCON or Rust+. Do not assume that port 28015 is mandatory.
- Test before committing. Use players on different ISPs, test direct connection, observe latency and packet loss, and verify the features you actually use.
- Secure administration. Protect panel, VPN and RCON accounts independently. Limit management traffic to approved devices or provider controls.
- Plan recovery. Keep backups, know how to restore the server identity, and document the endpoint and configured ports so a host migration or relay failure is recoverable.
- Check compliance. Apply Facepunch’s current community-server rules regardless of whether the server is at home, behind a VPN, or in a data center.
