To host a Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 (RAD2) server, run the modpack as a Minecraft Java server with Forge. You can use a managed Minecraft host with a one-click pack installer or run the community Docker image manfromdownunder/docker-minecraft-rad2 yourself. In either case, every player must install the identical RAD2 release, the server normally listens on port 25565, and a practical planning range is 8–10 GB of RAM. The first launch is slow because the pack files and a modded world are installed.
Most hosting listings identify RAD2 with Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge. A search result mentions a newer 1.18 release dated October 2026, but that release was not verified on the official pack page. Confirm the current CurseForge release before choosing Minecraft or Forge versions; never mix a 1.16.5 client with a different server release.
What a RAD2 server actually is
Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 is a Minecraft modpack, not a separate game with its own dedicated-server executable. Hosting a RAD2 server means running Minecraft Java Edition with Forge and the RAD2 files installed. The server software, world, configuration files and network port are therefore managed like a modded Minecraft installation.
Most available hosting descriptions target Forge on Minecraft 1.16.5. Because one October 2026 search result refers to an unverified 1.18 release, treat 1.16.5 as the established target only after checking the pack’s current CurseForge release page. The Minecraft version, Forge build and pack release must form one compatible set.

Choose managed hosting or Docker

Neither method removes the client-side requirement: each player still installs RAD2 locally and selects the same pack version as the server.
Plan the server before installing it
Confirm the pack release
Write down the exact RAD2 version shown by the current CurseForge release and the Minecraft and Forge versions it requires. Do not select a newer Minecraft version merely because a host’s dropdown lists it. If the pack page and host panel disagree, use the pack’s documented release as the authority or wait until the host offers a matching build.

Size memory and CPU
Published host guidance is inconsistent: one recommendation lists 6 GB RAM, another 8 GB, and another 10 GB. A Docker example aimed at five to ten players specifies 10 GB minimum and four CPU cores. Those are provider recommendations, not independent benchmarks. For a smooth starting point, reserve about 8–10 GB for the server process, with 10 GB and four cores the safer target for five to ten concurrent players. Leave additional memory for the operating system, Docker and other services.
Prepare storage and access
- Use fast, persistent storage. A modded world contains many files and can take substantially longer to save or generate than a vanilla world.
- Have administrator access to the host control panel or the machine running Docker.
- Decide whether the server will be private, limited to a group, or publicly reachable. Public access requires firewall and router planning.
- Record the intended game port. Minecraft’s default is 25565; the Docker example also maps 25575 for RCON.
Install RAD2 on a managed Minecraft host
Panel labels vary, but the workflow described by hosting providers follows the same order. Installing a different pack over an existing world can create an incompatible save, so make a backup or start with an empty server.
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s Stop or Shut Down control and wait until the console reports that the process has exited.
- Open the game-file selector. This may be called Game File, Server Type, Modpacks or a similar menu.
- Select RAD2. Choose the entry for Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 rather than a similarly named pack or a vanilla Forge profile.
- Choose the exact version. Set the Minecraft and pack version that matches the current CurseForge release. If the panel asks whether to change the version, accept only after confirming that the existing world is backed up.
- Apply or reinstall the files. Allow the panel to download the Forge loader and pack files. Do not start the server while the installer is still replacing files.
- Generate a new world when prompted. A fresh world is the safest option after changing packs or major versions. Reusing an old world can leave missing blocks, broken entities or registry errors.
- Start once and watch the console. The first launch can take several minutes while files are installed and terrain is generated. A delay of roughly five minutes is cited for the Docker setup; a quiet console during this phase does not necessarily mean the process is stuck.
- Note the address and port. Use the host-provided address and port, or the default 25565 if the provider exposes it without a custom mapping.
Panel settings to verify after the first start
- Set the intended maximum player count and difficulty in the panel if those controls are available.
- Check the console for a successful Forge startup and a completed world load.
- Locate the file manager or configuration editor so you can change permissions, game mode and other server properties later.
- Confirm that the service remains online after you disconnect from the panel; an automatically restarting service is useful, but it should not hide a repeating crash loop.
Run RAD2 with Docker
The community image manfromdownunder/docker-minecraft-rad2 is intended for a Docker Compose deployment. It uses environment variables for the Minecraft version, Forge version and modpack URL, and exposes settings such as MAX_PLAYERS and DIFFICULTY. Variable names beyond those explicitly shown by the image must be taken from the image version’s documentation; do not assume that a variable from another Minecraft image will work.

Install the prerequisites
- Install a supported Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin on a Linux host, Windows machine or virtual machine.
- Create a dedicated directory for the RAD2 project and ensure the Docker service can write to its persistent data location.
- Reserve enough memory for the container and the operating system. The five-to-ten-player Docker example calls for at least 10 GB RAM and four cores.
- Allow inbound TCP traffic on the game port you intend to publish. Add the RCON port only if you need remote console access and understand the security implications.
Create a Compose file
The following skeleton shows the image and the two settings named in the deployment example. Add the image-specific variables for the Minecraft version, Forge version and direct modpack URL exactly as documented for the image release you install.

restart: unless-stoppedThe port mapping publishes the container’s Minecraft port on host port 25565 and maps RCON on 25575, as shown in the Docker example. If your image release declares a different data directory, mount that directory to a host folder before starting the service so that the world survives container recreation. A container without persistent storage can lose the world when its writable layer is removed.
Start and observe the container
- Save the Compose file in the project directory.
- Run
docker compose configto catch YAML indentation and quoting errors before launch. - Run
docker compose up -dto start the container in the background. - Run
docker compose logs -f rad2and wait for Forge to finish loading and the world to be ready. - Expect the initial installation and world generation to take several minutes; approximately five minutes is cited for the example deployment.
- Stop the service with
docker compose downonly after the server has been shut down cleanly. Use the server console’s stop command where possible so the world is saved before the container exits.
Do not change the Minecraft, Forge or pack variables while the server is running. Stop it, back up the persistent data, update one compatible set of versions, and then start again while watching the logs.
Configure ports, firewall and remote access
Minecraft gameplay port
Port 25565 is the default Minecraft server port and is the dedicated port listed by hosting providers. A managed host may give you a different external port; use the address and port shown in its panel rather than forcing 25565. In Docker, the mapping 25565:25565 makes host port 25565 forward to the container’s game port.
Router forwarding for a home server
- Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably with a DHCP reservation.
- Create a router port-forward rule from external TCP port 25565 to the computer’s local TCP port 25565.
- Allow the same port through the computer’s firewall.
- Test from a network outside your home, such as a mobile connection. Testing from inside the same network can fail when the router does not support hairpin connections.
If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work at all. In that case, use a host with a public port or a networking solution designed for private networks instead of repeatedly changing router rules.

RCON port
The Docker example maps 25575 for RCON remote console access. RCON is administrative access, not a player connection. Expose it only when required, restrict it with a firewall or private network, and use a strong password configured according to the image’s instructions. Never assume that publishing 25575 is necessary for ordinary gameplay.
Install the matching client pack
Every player needs the RAD2 pack installed on their own computer. The CurseForge app is the easiest route for most players:
- Install the app and sign in if it requires an account.
- Search for Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons 2 and install the same release selected on the server.
- Launch the profile once so the Minecraft launcher creates its files and Forge completes any first-run setup.
- Use the server’s address and port to connect from the Multiplayer screen.
Do not let the launcher silently update the profile after the server has been installed. A client on a different pack version can be rejected with a mod-list mismatch or can connect and then fail when it encounters incompatible registries. If a player sees missing-mod, wrong-version or registry errors, compare the complete pack version, Minecraft version and Forge version before changing any server files.
Client memory allocation
Some RAD2 setup guides advise raising the launcher’s allocated memory for smoother play. Increase it gradually rather than assigning all system RAM; the client still needs memory for the operating system and other applications. Client allocation is separate from the server’s 8–10 GB planning range.

Difficulty, player permissions and game mode are controlled through the server configuration files or a managed host’s control panel. Stop the server before editing files unless the panel explicitly supports live changes, then start it and confirm the result in the console.

Docker variables
The Docker example exposes MAX_PLAYERS and DIFFICULTY as environment variables. Set MAX_PLAYERS to the number of concurrent players you intend to support, then choose the difficulty value accepted by the image. Keep the Compose file as the source of truth so a container recreation does not silently restore old settings.
File and panel settings
On a managed host, use the panel’s server-properties editor or file manager. On a self-hosted installation, edit the generated configuration only after making a backup. Permission and game-mode changes may be stored in separate operator or player-data files; follow the format generated by the server rather than creating a second file with a similar name.

Watch actual memory use, garbage-collection pauses and tick-rate warnings after several players explore different areas. Add resources only when measurements show pressure. A larger allocation cannot fix a wrong Forge build, a broken mod or a network port that players cannot reach.
Backups, upgrades and world safety
Back up before every version change
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world directory and server configuration to storage outside the live installation.
- Record the old pack, Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Change one version set at a time and retain the backup until players have tested the new world.
Generating a new world is the safest choice when changing packs or making a major Minecraft-version move. A world created with one registry and mod set may not load correctly after blocks, entities or dimensions are removed.
Updating a managed installation
Use the panel’s stop control, open the Game File or modpack selector, choose the new compatible release and follow its version-change prompts. Do not overwrite the only copy of a working world. If the panel offers a fresh-world option, use it for a major release and keep the previous world as an archive.

Updating Docker
Stop the Compose service, back up persistent data, update the image or environment values, and recreate the container. Keep the same persistent data mount. Read the startup logs for migration messages and stop immediately if Forge reports missing mods, duplicate registries or an incompatible world.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server never finishes its first start
Allow several minutes before treating the process as failed. Check container or panel logs for download errors, insufficient memory, a full disk or a Forge exception. A first launch that is slow while installing files and generating terrain is expected; a repeating crash after the world begins loading is not.

- Verify that the server process is running and listening on the intended port.
- Confirm the player is using the external address, not a private LAN address.
- Check the provider’s assigned port or the router’s 25565 forwarding rule.
- Review host and computer firewalls.
- Test with one client from outside the local network.
Forge or mod-list mismatch
Compare the server’s exact RAD2 release, Minecraft version and Forge build with the player’s CurseForge profile. Reinstall the client profile rather than copying random mods into it. On the server, restore the last known-good files if a version change introduced the mismatch.
World corruption or missing content after an update
Stop immediately and restore the pre-update backup. Confirm that the new release supports the existing world before trying again. If compatibility is uncertain, create a new world and keep the old save offline.
Lag appears after more players join
Check memory and CPU usage, then compare the number of simultaneous players with the resources reserved for the process. The Docker guidance uses 10 GB RAM and four cores for five to ten players; a smaller machine may need fewer players or a larger allocation. Network latency and world-generation activity can also produce temporary pauses that additional RAM will not resolve.
