There are two different ways people mean “host an RDR2 server.” For an official, private Red Dead Online game, start an Invite Only Session from Story Mode. You do not install or operate a dedicated server. For a persistent, customized multiplayer world with community scripts or roleplay, use RedM, the Cfx-powered modification for Red Dead Redemption 2. RedM requires you to run server software and configure it as a community service.

The choice determines every later step: official session or community modification, temporary lobby or persistent server, almost no administration or full control over configuration and moderation. This guide explains both paths and keeps Rockstar’s client-connection advice separate from RedM networking.

Choose the right kind of “server” first

Red Dead Online and RedM are not two settings for the same server. They are separate products with different ownership, software, and operating procedures.

Option What it is Who operates the server Customization Best for
Invite Only Session A private session created inside the official Red Dead Online service Rockstar’s online infrastructure; you only start and manage the session in-game Limited to the features and rules provided by Red Dead Online Playing privately with invited friends without installing server software
RedM server A customized dedicated multiplayer server using the RedM modification powered by Cfx You or an administrator running the server software Community resources, scripts, rules, and roleplay systems, subject to the platform and resource documentation Persistent communities, roleplay, custom content, and administration

If your goal is simply to keep strangers out of a one-off game, use Invite Only. If you want a named community that players can return to, with its own rules and content, plan a RedM deployment.

Start an official Invite Only Session

Rockstar’s documented route begins in Story Mode. The result is a private Red Dead Online session, not a machine that other players can connect to independently.

  1. Launch Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC and enter Story Mode.
  2. Open the Pause Menu.
  3. Select Online.
  4. Choose Find New Session.
  5. Select Invite Only Session.
  6. Use the game’s invitation options to invite the players you want in that session.

Everyone still connects through Rockstar’s Red Dead Online service. Closing the game, changing sessions, or losing the connection ends your practical control of that particular session; it does not leave a dedicated world running for the group.

What Invite Only does and does not provide

  • It does provide: a private Red Dead Online session started by a player, with invitations controlled from the game.
  • It does not provide: server files, a persistent world, custom scripts, a community browser entry, or a server configuration file.
  • It does not require: a Cfx license key, FXServer installation, or RedM artifacts.
  • It remains official multiplayer: the session uses Rockstar’s service and Red Dead Online rules rather than a separately administered community server.

What RedM adds

RedM’s project documentation defines it as a modification for Red Dead Redemption 2 that enables multiplayer on customized dedicated servers powered by Cfx. In practical terms, RedM is the route for hosting a community-operated RDR2 world rather than creating a private Rockstar session.

A RedM server normally has a host machine, server artifacts, a configuration file, a Cfx license key, and resources that define the experience. Administrators decide which resources to run, who can join, and how the community is moderated. Those choices also create ongoing responsibilities: updates, backups, access control, incident handling, and compatibility checks.

When RedM is the appropriate choice

  • You need a server that can remain available when the original host is not playing.
  • You want roleplay, custom rules, or community-created resources.
  • You are prepared to operate software and maintain a public or private service.
  • You can assign an administrator to handle configuration, updates, and player support.

When RedM is not the appropriate choice

  • You only need a private evening with a few friends.
  • You do not want to run server software or expose a host to inbound connections.
  • You require the exact official Red Dead Online experience and progression.
  • You are looking for a Rockstar-provided dedicated-server product; the documented official option is Invite Only, not a downloadable Rockstar server.

Requirements before setting up RedM

A Cfx community setup tutorial identifies an installed copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 or Red Dead Online as a prerequisite. Use a legitimate PC installation that can launch successfully before troubleshooting the server. Rockstar’s PC requirements and online-play information also indicate that account access, an internet connection, and the required platform software are part of the client setup.

Prepare the following before opening the server configuration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A working PC game installation: verify that Red Dead Redemption 2 or Red Dead Online starts normally on the computer that will be used for testing.
  • A host computer: choose a machine that can remain powered on for the hours your community expects. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal CPU, memory, storage, or bandwidth number, so do not treat an arbitrary hardware list as an official minimum.
  • A supported operating system and current artifacts: RedM’s hosting documentation provides Windows and Linux artifact resources. Artifact versions and installation procedures change, so use the current Cfx and RedM pages rather than an old numbered download.
  • A Cfx license key: the vanilla FXServer guide includes license-key configuration. Create and protect the key according to the current Cfx instructions.
  • An administration plan: decide who can restart the service, change resources, approve players, and respond when an update breaks compatibility.
  • A test group: start privately and verify joining, permissions, and resource behavior before publishing the endpoint to a wider community.

Set up a RedM server using the current Cfx workflow

The exact installer screens and artifact packages can change. The sequence below is the durable workflow; use the current “Setting Up a Vanilla FXServer” instructions and RedM hosting documentation for the command lines and downloads shown by your chosen operating system.

  1. Install and validate the game. Confirm the Red Dead Redemption 2 or Red Dead Online client is installed and can sign in. A server setup cannot fix a broken client installation.
  2. Choose the host environment. Decide whether the service will run on a Windows or Linux machine. Keep the server files in a dedicated directory with enough room for artifacts, configuration, resources, logs, and backups.
  3. Obtain current server artifacts. Download the artifact build and supporting files from the RedM/Cfx hosting resources. Do not copy an artifact number from an old tutorial; the available build and its instructions may have changed.
  4. Run the management setup. The community tutorial points to txAdmin for the guided setup and administration interface. Follow the current Cfx procedure to create the server profile, select the appropriate data location, and complete the first-run setup.
  5. Identify the game in the configuration. In server.cfg, set the RedM game name with set gamename rdr3. This tells the Cfx server configuration that it is serving RedM/RDR2 rather than another Cfx-supported game.
  6. Add the Cfx license key. Put the key in the location and format required by the current Cfx guide. Treat it as a secret: do not paste it into public posts, screenshots, or a repository shared with players.
  7. Apply the documented OneSync settings. Cfx’s vanilla FXServer guidance includes OneSync configuration. Use the current setting names and supported values from that guide instead of copying a dated configuration fragment.
  8. Start with a minimal resource set. Launch the vanilla or minimal profile first. Confirm that the process starts cleanly and that the administration interface reports a healthy server before adding community resources.
  9. Test a client connection. Join from a separate client account or test with trusted players. Check loading, authentication, permissions, basic movement, and a clean shutdown/restart cycle.
  10. Add resources one at a time. Record each resource version and configuration change. If a new resource causes a startup or runtime failure, you can remove the last change instead of debugging an unknown collection of modifications.
  11. Document the operating procedure. Write down the artifact version, configuration location, restart method, backup location, administrators, and the rollback plan. This turns a personal experiment into a maintainable community service.

Why the rdr3 setting matters

Cfx’s vanilla FXServer documentation uses set gamename rdr3 to identify RedM/RDR2. It is a server configuration setting, not a replacement for installing RedM and its artifacts. If the server is configured for the wrong game name, resources and startup behavior may not match the intended platform.

Networking: do not copy Rockstar’s Red Dead Online ports into RedM

Rockstar’s support article for a Red Dead Online connection error lists five UDP ports for client-connection troubleshooting: 6672, 61455, 61456, 61457, and 61458. Rockstar published that article with a last-updated date of September 18, 2025. Those values describe troubleshooting traffic between a Red Dead Online client and Rockstar services.

They do not establish the listener ports or port-forwarding rules for a RedM dedicated server. RedM networking belongs to the Cfx server configuration and the current RedM hosting documentation. Configure the address, transport, firewall, and router rules shown there for your artifact and operating system rather than forwarding Rockstar’s troubleshooting list by assumption.

A safe connection checklist

  • First test on the host itself, then from another machine on the same network, and only then from an external connection.
  • Confirm the server process is listening on the endpoint specified by the current Cfx configuration.
  • Allow only the required application and port through the host firewall; do not disable the firewall as a diagnostic shortcut.
  • If the host is behind a router, apply the exact forwarding rule required by the current Cfx guide and verify that the rule targets the correct machine.
  • Keep Rockstar client troubleshooting separate from RedM server troubleshooting. A Red Dead Online port test cannot prove that a RedM endpoint is reachable.

Operate the server responsibly

Hosting is an ongoing service, not a one-time download. Establish a small operating routine before inviting a larger community.

Backups and rollback

  • Back up server.cfg, resource configuration, permissions, and any persistent community data before changing artifacts or resources.
  • Keep at least one known-good configuration so you can return to it after a failed update.
  • Label backups with dates and the artifact/resource versions they match.

Updates

  • Read the current Cfx and RedM documentation before updating artifacts.
  • Test updates privately; do not make the live community the first test environment.
  • Update dependent resources together when their documentation requires matching versions.

Access and moderation

  • Limit administrative access to named people who need it.
  • Keep license keys and administrative credentials out of public chat and code repositories.
  • Publish server rules and an escalation path before opening the server.
  • Log configuration changes so another administrator can understand what changed.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

The player only wants a private game

Do not install RedM. Enter Story Mode and use Pause Menu → Online → Find New Session → Invite Only Session. This is the official path for a private Red Dead Online session.

The RedM process starts, but the client cannot join

Check the endpoint and firewall rules in the current Cfx configuration, then test from the host and a second network. Verify that the server is actually running with the RedM game name setting and that the client is using the RedM route rather than trying to enter an official Red Dead Online session.

The configuration came from an old video or forum post

Stop and compare it with the current Cfx “Setting Up a Vanilla FXServer” page. Artifact packages, txAdmin screens, license-key placement, and OneSync settings can change. Preserve your own notes, but replace stale commands and version numbers with the current documented procedure.

A resource causes errors after installation

Remove or disable the last resource added, restore the known-good configuration, and reproduce the failure with the smallest possible resource set. Record the resource version and the exact log message before asking its maintainer for help.

Rockstar’s port advice did not solve the RedM problem

That result is expected if the issue is server reachability. The five UDP ports in Rockstar’s support article concern Red Dead Online client connectivity; they are not a confirmed RedM forwarding recipe. Return to the Cfx networking instructions for the server artifact you are running.

Costs and hosting choices

The available documentation does not establish a provider, recurring price, hardware tariff, or universal resource requirement for a RedM server. A self-managed host means you supply the machine, network connection, administration time, and backups. A rented machine may move the hardware responsibility to a hosting company, but you would still need to maintain the Cfx configuration, license key, resources, permissions, and updates.

Do not assume that buying the PC game supplies server files or grants an official Rockstar dedicated server. The game installation is a prerequisite for the client and is identified by the RedM setup material as a requirement; server artifacts and configuration come through the RedM/Cfx workflow.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose Invite Only if you need a private official session today and do not want server administration.
  • Choose RedM if you need customized dedicated multiplayer and accept responsibility for software, networking, moderation, and maintenance.
  • Use the current Cfx guide for artifact installation, txAdmin, license-key setup, OneSync, and network configuration.
  • Use Rockstar support for Red Dead Online session behavior, account requirements, and official client-connection troubleshooting.
  • Keep the two systems separate in documentation, firewall rules, and troubleshooting notes.

The Bottom Line

For a private official game, start an Invite Only Session from Story Mode. For a persistent customized RDR2 community, install and operate a RedM server through the current Cfx workflow, set set gamename rdr3, and follow RedM’s present networking and licensing documentation.
