To host a Quake Live dedicated server in 2026, run the Linux server files installed through SteamCMD, configure a server name and game port, launch the included 32- or 64-bit script, and expose that UDP port through your firewall and router. A local connection proves only that the process works; friends on the internet also need a reachable public address and correct port forwarding. The detailed commands below come from community documentation, so inspect the files installed by your current build before relying on an older path, variable, or default.
What a Quake Live server actually requires
Quake Live’s Steam listing describes a multiplayer game with more than 100 arenas, more than 12 game modes and Steam Workshop support. Those are game features, not evidence of a particular server capacity or hardware requirement. The available hosting instructions do not establish a current minimum CPU, memory, bandwidth figure, player-capacity benchmark, provider price or latency comparison. Plan for a reliable Linux machine and test with your intended player count rather than treating an unverified specification as a guarantee.
The clearest self-hosting route documented for 2026 is Linux. You can run it on a computer at home or on a rented Linux virtual server. In either case you need:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Linux access with permission to install software, create files and run a long-lived process.
- SteamCMD and the Quake Live dedicated-server app files (the community procedure uses app ID
349090). - A server configuration containing a name, server type and game port.
- A firewall rule allowing the game traffic, and—when hosting at home—a router rule forwarding the same port to the Linux host.
- A way to test from outside your local network.
The installation recipe is community-maintained rather than an official Bethesda server manual. A recent independent tutorial dated September 6, 2026 and an older Steam Community guide describe the same general workflow; verify command names and file locations against the version you install.

Home computer or VPS: which location fits?
| Consideration | Home host | Linux VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Uses a computer you already control. Its CPU, memory, storage and uptime become your responsibility. | Uses rented virtual hardware. The sources do not establish a minimum plan or guaranteed player count. |
| Network reachability | Requires router port forwarding, a host-firewall rule and an internet connection that accepts inbound traffic. | Usually avoids a household router, but you still configure the VPS firewall and any provider-level network controls. |
| Recurring cost | No hosting fee is established by the available sources, although electricity and an existing internet service still apply. | Has a recurring rental charge; no current provider price is established here. |
| Maintenance | You maintain the operating system, machine and household network. | You maintain Linux and the server while the hosting company maintains the underlying platform. |
| Latency and geography | Players near your connection may benefit from local routing; results depend on the ISP and location. | You can select a region, but no source-backed latency comparison is available. |
Choose a home host when you are comfortable changing router and firewall settings and can leave the machine powered on. Choose a VPS when you want an always-on public endpoint and prefer not to expose a household network. Neither option is universally faster or cheaper based on the evidence available.
If you would rather not set up Linux, SteamCMD and port forwarding yourself, Godlike.Host offers Quake Live server hosting with its own game panel, free DDoS protection and a personal firewall. It also has a free Quake Live server for trying the panel; it must be extended every 3 hours, has limited panel features and is available in one location only.
Install the Quake Live dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
Use a dedicated directory so the game files, configuration and logs are separate from unrelated services. The following sequence reflects the community guide; SteamCMD’s behavior or the app’s availability can change, so read any errors instead of assuming a successful exit.
- Install SteamCMD. Use your Linux distribution’s supported package or Valve’s current SteamCMD installation method. Confirm that the
steamcmdcommand starts before attempting the game download. - Create a server directory. For example, create
/opt/quakelive-serverand give the account that will run the server ownership or write access. Avoid running the game process as root. - Log in anonymously and install the app. The community procedure uses this command pattern:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /opt/quakelive-server +app_update 349090 validate +quitThe numeric identifier is the dedicated-server app ID cited by the guide. If SteamCMD reports that the app is unavailable or requires different authentication, check the current listing and installed files before changing the command.
- Inspect what was installed. Look for the included launch scripts, configuration directories and any README files. Do not create a replacement script merely because an old tutorial shows a different path.
- Repeat the update command when maintaining the server. Stop the running process first, update the files, review configuration changes and then start it again. The sources do not promise a particular update cadence or backward compatibility.
The community instructions identify run_server_x86.sh and run_server_x64.sh as the normal launch scripts. Select the script that matches the files and operating system you actually installed; if only one exists, use that one. Make it executable if Linux reports a permission error, then run it from the directory expected by the script.
Configure the server before first launch
Find the active configuration and home path
Quake Live can use a home path for writable data such as configuration, logs and downloaded content. The launch script or accompanying documentation normally identifies it. Keep the home path on persistent storage, back it up, and use a separate path for each instance. A configuration edited in the wrong directory can make a server appear to ignore your changes.

Set a name, server type, port and master setting
Create or edit the server.cfg used by your installation. A guide-based starting point looks like this; variable names and defaults should be confirmed in the files shipped with your build:
set sv_hostname "My Quake Live Server"
set sv_serverType 2
set net_port 27960
set sv_master 1
sv_hostnameis the name players see.sv_serverType 1is the LAN value documented by the community guide.sv_serverType 2is the internet/public value documented by that guide.net_port 27960shows the guide’s base game-port example. Use the port variable and syntax present in your current configuration.sv_master 1enables the master-server setting referenced in the guide’s public-listing troubleshooting. If your build uses a different default or spelling, follow its shipped documentation.
Do not paste quotation marks or cvars into a shell prompt unless the launch documentation explicitly says to do so; these lines belong in the configuration file or in the script’s supported argument section.

Choose LAN or public internet behavior deliberately
Use the LAN server type for players on the same local network. Use the internet value when people will connect from outside your home or VPS network. A LAN setting can prevent a server from appearing in a public browser even when the process is healthy, while a public setting still depends on outbound master-server communication and an open inbound game port.
The Steam Community guide reports a special LAN-browser behavior limited to ports 27015 through 27020. Treat that as an old, guide-specific quirk rather than a universal rule: test the current client/server combination, and use direct connection when the LAN browser does not show the server.
Launch the dedicated server
- Change to the installation directory and confirm that the selected launch script is executable.
- Start
run_server_x64.shorrun_server_x86.sh, according to the files installed on your machine. - Watch the console for configuration errors, a bind/listen message and the final game state. A process that exits immediately usually has a path, permission, missing-library or configuration problem.
- From the same host, verify that the process is listening on the configured game port using the Linux socket tool available on your distribution, such as
ss. Check the actual port shown by the process rather than assuming it is27960. - Keep the process attached while diagnosing it. Once it works, use a service manager or another process-supervision method to restart it after a crash or reboot. The community guide recommends supervision for multiple or persistent instances but does not define a current supported supervisor.
Run one instance first. Add maps, passwords, rotation rules and other gameplay settings only after a plain server accepts a test connection; this isolates networking problems from configuration mistakes.

How do I port forward a Quake Live server?
For a home-hosted server, forward the configured UDP game port from the household router to the Linux computer’s local address. The router’s labels differ by manufacturer, but the logic is the same.
- Give the Linux host a stable local address. Prefer a DHCP reservation in the router or a correctly configured static address. A forwarding rule aimed at a changing address will eventually point at the wrong device.
- Identify the exact game port. Read the launch output and configuration. If you used the guide’s example, it is
27960; do not forward that number if your instance uses another port. - Create one router rule. Select UDP, enter the same external and internal game-port number, and target the Linux host’s local address. Do not forward a range unless you have deliberately assigned a different port to each instance.
- Allow the port on the Linux firewall. Permit UDP on that same port for the server process or host interface. Reload the firewall and confirm the rule is active.
- Check for another NAT layer. If an ISP gateway feeds a second router, forward through both devices or place the downstream router in the appropriate bridge/DMZ arrangement. The exact fix depends on your equipment and ISP.
- Test externally. Have a friend connect over a different internet connection, or use a separate mobile connection. Testing from inside the same LAN can succeed even when inbound internet traffic is blocked.
The guide associates TCP with ZeroMQ remote-console and statistics features, not with basic game listing. Do not open a TCP administration port unless you have enabled that feature, understand its authentication, restrict its source addresses and protect its credentials. A public game server does not require exposing remote administration.
Verify direct connection and browser visibility
Test direct connection first
Use the client’s direct-connect function with the server’s public address and configured port. Direct connection is the quickest way to separate a functioning game process from a browser-registration problem. For a home host, do this from outside the home network; for a VPS, use a second network or ask another player to test.
A successful direct connection confirms that the route, firewall and port are usable for that test. It does not prove that every player’s ISP can reach you or that the server will appear in a global browser.
Then test the public listing
If direct connection works but the server is absent from the browser, check the settings that control registration:

- Confirm that the server type is the internet value,
sv_serverType 2, in builds that use the guide’s convention. - Check
sv_masterand inspect console output for outbound master-server or DNS failures. - Verify that the host can make outbound connections; inbound forwarding alone is not enough for registration.
- Search by the exact hostname and account for browser filters, mode filters or stale cached results.
- Use an alternate server-browser method or direct connect before declaring the server offline.
Listing behavior can change with client and server updates. A direct connection that remains reliable is stronger evidence of availability than a missing browser entry.
Run multiple Quake Live servers on one host
Each instance needs its own writable home/configuration path and a unique game port. The community guide uses 27960 as a base example and demonstrates separate ports for additional instances, but the correct arithmetic depends on every other service on the machine.
| Instance | Port planning | Required separation |
|---|---|---|
| Server 1 | Choose an unused port, such as the guide’s 27960 example. |
Its own config/home path and process. |
| Server 2 | Choose another unused port; never reuse Server 1’s port. | Different config/home path, firewall rule and router rule if hosted at home. |
| Additional instances | Continue only after checking collisions with SSH, monitoring, remote-console and other applications. | Distinct credentials and supervision entries. |
Start each instance independently and confirm its listening port before adding the next. A copied configuration that retains the first port is the most common cause of a bind failure.

The community quakelive-server-standards project provides a Docker-based framework for configuration and deployment. Containers can make repeatable environments and multiple instances easier to manage, but they add Docker networking, volume, image-update and log-management concerns. They are not required for a straightforward Linux installation.
If you choose this route:
- Read the project’s current README and example files rather than relying on an old compose key or image tag.
- Publish the UDP game port explicitly and map persistent volumes for configuration and server data.
- Keep container administration separate from the game port and avoid exposing a Docker API to the internet.
- Apply the same external test: direct connection from another network, followed by browser-registration checks.
The framework is community-maintained, not official game support, so treat its defaults as implementation examples that require review after updates.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Run the server under a dedicated non-root Linux account.
- Allow only the UDP game port needed for players. Keep SSH restricted to trusted addresses and keys.
- Do not expose ZeroMQ or statistics ports unless required; if enabled, use strong, unique credentials and network restrictions.
- Back up
server.cfg, map rotation, administration settings and the home directory before updates. - Update the operating system and SteamCMD, then review the server’s launch output after every game-file update.
- Use process supervision for an always-on server and record restart times so crashes are visible.
- Give each instance a distinct port, data path and administrative secret.
- Monitor disk space and logs; a full filesystem can look like a networking or startup failure.
No source establishes a supported security guarantee or a fixed update schedule. Your operating-system hardening, firewall policy and credential handling remain part of operating the server.
Quake Live server troubleshooting
The process will not start
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final exit message.
- Confirm the launch script exists, is executable and is being run from the directory it expects.
- Check that the configured home path exists and is writable by the service account.
- Use the script matching the installed architecture and install any library dependency reported by Linux.
- Temporarily remove recent configuration changes and start with a minimal server configuration.
Players cannot connect directly
- Verify that the process is listening on the intended port.
- Check the Linux firewall and router rule for the same UDP number.
- Confirm that the router forwards to the current local address, not an old DHCP address.
- Look for double NAT, carrier-grade NAT or an ISP policy that prevents inbound connections. The available sources do not quantify which providers impose such limits.
- Test from outside the LAN; a local success is not proof of public reachability.
The server is reachable but not showing in the browser
- Check
sv_serverType,sv_masterand outbound connectivity. - Search without restrictive browser filters and allow time for registration.
- Try direct connect or another browser view before changing ports.
- Inspect current client/server documentation if a recent update changed master-server behavior.
A LAN server does not appear
The older community guide reports a LAN-browser range of 27015–27020. Validate that observation on your current build rather than moving a public server into that range blindly. Confirm both machines are on the same subnet and use direct connection as a diagnostic.
A second instance fails with a bind error
Assign it a genuinely unused game port, a separate home/configuration path and matching firewall/router rules. Check all listening sockets before choosing the next number; do not copy a sample increment if another service already occupies it.
What is and is not established about capacity
The available documentation supports a practical installation and networking workflow, but it does not provide a current hardware minimum, player-capacity test, bandwidth model, guaranteed uptime figure or measured latency comparison between home hosting and VPS regions. Start with a small private test, observe CPU, memory, network and tick/frame behavior while players join, and scale only from measurements on your own machine and connection. Do not advertise a player limit as an established Quake Live specification.
For most operators, the decisive checks are simple: the process stays running, the configured UDP port is listening, the firewall and router deliver packets to the correct host, and a player outside your network can connect. Browser registration is an additional convenience, not a substitute for those tests.
