To host a Prominence II Classic server, first choose one exact 1.20.1 branch—Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0—then use a matching server pack, Java runtime, client installation and network configuration. The server and every player must use the same Minecraft version, Prominence build and loader. You can run it on a home computer or use a managed host, but no authoritative source publishes a Classic-specific minimum RAM or CPU requirement, so avoid treating figures for another Prominence edition as Classic requirements.

Choose the correct Prominence Classic branch first

“Prominence Classic” refers to the Prominence II Classic project. It supports Minecraft 1.20.1 with two different mod loaders. These are separate installations, not interchangeable choices.

Branch Prominence release identified for the branch Minecraft Loader Server-pack information
Forge Prominence II [Classic] v2.2.0 1.20.1 Forge Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip; uploaded January 29, 2024; archive size listed as 1.0 GB
NeoForge Prominence II Classic v2.8.0 1.20.1 NeoForge Use a server pack that matches the v2.8.0 NeoForge release; the supplied project information does not name an equivalent archive

The files index identifies v2.8.0 as the newest listed Classic release (NeoForge, July 12, 2024), while the Forge server pack is v2.2.0. A Forge client cannot join a NeoForge server simply because both use Minecraft 1.20.1. Decide which branch your group will play before downloading the launcher profile, mods or server files.

What must match

  • Minecraft Java Edition version: 1.20.1.
  • Prominence Classic release number.
  • Loader: Forge or NeoForge.
  • Server-side mods, configuration files, scripts and libraries.

If a friend receives a “mod list mismatch,” “missing mods” or loader error, compare these four items before changing ports or firewall rules.

What every player needs

Prominence is a Minecraft: Java Edition project with both client and server support. Each player needs Minecraft Java Edition and a client profile matching the server’s Classic build and loader. Console, Bedrock or an unmodified Java profile is not a substitute for the required modded Java installation.

Have every player install the same branch before the first connection attempt. Keep a record of the exact release and loader in your group chat or server welcome message; this prevents someone from downloading the newer NeoForge build when the server is running Forge v2.2.0.

Get the matching server pack

Forge v2.2.0

  1. Open the Prominence II Classic project’s CurseForge Files page.
  2. Select the Forge release and download Prominence_II_Classic_Server_Pack_v2.2.0.zip.
  3. Check that the downloaded archive is the 1.0 GB file listed for the January 29, 2024 upload, rather than a similarly named client profile or a pack from another Prominence edition.

The project page lists Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge loader for this archive. Keep the ZIP unchanged until you have extracted it into the directory that will host the server.

NeoForge v2.8.0

For NeoForge, select the v2.8.0 Classic release and obtain a server pack explicitly built for that release. Do not repurpose the Forge v2.2.0 archive. If the project’s file listing does not show a NeoForge server archive, consult the release’s included files and instructions rather than guessing which client files can be copied to a server.

Do not use another Prominence edition’s files

Prominence editions have different mods, scripts and configuration. A launch command or server archive for Hasturian Era, for example, is not evidence that it works for Classic. Use only the instructions shipped with the Classic archive you selected.

Prepare the host computer

Install 64-bit Java

Install a 64-bit Java runtime suitable for the selected server pack. The Classic project information identifies the Minecraft version and loader but does not publish a Classic-specific Java major version. Therefore, read the server pack’s included instructions and follow any Java-version requirement they state. Confirm the installation from a terminal with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
java -version

If the command is not found, install Java or correct the operating system’s PATH before attempting to start the server. A 32-bit runtime can run out of addressable memory on a large modpack even when the computer has more physical RAM.

Create a dedicated directory

Make a new folder used only by this server, such as ProminenceClassic-Forge-2.2.0 or ProminenceClassic-NeoForge-2.8.0. Avoid placing it inside a synchronized cloud folder or a directory shared with another Minecraft instance. The server needs write access for world data, logs, crash reports and configuration.

Extract the archive intact

Extract the complete server ZIP into the dedicated folder. Keep the supplied mods, configs, scripts and libraries together. Do not selectively copy a few JAR files from a client installation: the server pack is assembled for a specific loader and release.

Start the server for the first time

The archive may include a Windows batch file, a Linux/macOS shell script or a documented command. The project information does not guarantee a particular script filename, so inspect the extracted folder and read its instructions instead of copying a command from a different Prominence edition.

Minecraft Dungeons: Standard Edition – Windows 10 [Digital Code]
  • Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
  1. Open the extracted server directory.
  2. Read the included README or server instructions.
  3. Run the supplied start script or command for your operating system from that directory.
  4. Watch the console for errors, missing libraries or a request to accept Minecraft’s EULA.
  5. Stop the process cleanly after the first successful generation so you can edit configuration before inviting players.

On the first launch, the server normally creates files such as eula.txt, server.properties, a world directory and logs. If the process exits immediately, read the last lines of the console and the newest log before trying random Java arguments.

Accept the EULA

When prompted, open the generated eula.txt, review Minecraft’s license terms and change the acceptance entry only if you agree to them. Save the file, then start the supplied command again. The server will not continue while the EULA remains unaccepted.

Configure the world and access controls

After the first run, edit server.properties while the server is stopped. Set the options appropriate for your group, including:

  • Server name or message: identify the world and branch so players do not join the wrong instance.
  • Difficulty: select the intended gameplay difficulty before exploration begins.
  • Operator accounts: grant operator status only to trusted administrators.
  • Whitelist: enable it for a private group and add each player’s exact Java username.
  • Other properties: review view distance, simulation distance, game mode, PvP and any pack-specific settings supplied with the archive.

Start the server again and test that the world loads without errors. Never edit configuration or replace mod files while the process is running; stop it first to avoid corrupting writes.

Make a home-hosted server reachable

Local-network test

First test from a computer on the same home network. Use the host computer’s local IP address, not the public address shown by an internet service. This separates mod or server errors from router and firewall problems.

Port forwarding for internet players

Friends outside your home network need a path through the router. Cinderstone’s official hosting guidance describes forwarding Minecraft’s default port, 25565, from the router to the host computer. Assign the host a stable local IP address, create a forwarding rule for the port and allow the Java server through the host operating system’s firewall. If you changed the server’s server-port, forward that chosen port instead and tell players the same value.

  1. Give the host computer a reserved or static private address on the router.
  2. Open the router’s port-forwarding page.
  3. Forward TCP traffic for port 25565 to the host’s private address; follow the router and server instructions if they require an additional protocol.
  4. Allow the Java runtime or server process through the host firewall.
  5. Have a friend test from outside your home network. Testing only from inside can produce a false result on routers without NAT loopback.

If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, blocks inbound connections or supplies a router you cannot configure, ordinary forwarding may not work. Do not expose unrelated administrative ports just to make Minecraft connect.

VPN alternative

When forwarding is unavailable, a virtual private network such as Radmin VPN can place trusted players on a shared virtual network. Everyone installs the same VPN, joins the host’s network and connects using the host’s VPN address. This is a workaround for a private group, not a replacement for securing accounts and keeping the server software updated.

Keep the server online and recover safely

A self-hosted world is available only while the host computer is running, awake, connected to the internet and able to run Java. Sleep mode, a restart, power loss or a dropped network connection takes the server offline. Configure the computer not to sleep during play sessions and make sure automatic updates will not reboot it unexpectedly.

Backups

  • Stop the server before making a full file copy, especially of the world directory.
  • Keep at least one backup on a different drive or machine from the host.
  • Back up before changing Minecraft versions, switching loaders, replacing the server pack or installing a major mod update.
  • Label backups with the branch, release and date so a Forge world is not mistaken for a NeoForge one.

A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically test restoring a copy into a separate directory and verify that it starts.

Crash recovery

When the server crashes, preserve the latest log and crash-report file before restarting repeatedly. Check for an incompatible mod, an incomplete update, Java errors or a damaged configuration. Restore the most recent known-good backup if a version change caused the failure. Do not delete the world as a first response.

Updates and moderation

The owner is responsible for mod updates, crash recovery, backups, moderation tools and protection against unwanted access. Announce maintenance, stop the server cleanly before updates and make sure every client receives the same release. Keep operator privileges and whitelist membership limited to people who need them.

How much RAM does a Prominence Classic server need?

No authoritative Classic-specific minimum RAM figure, CPU benchmark or guaranteed JVM launch setting is published in the available project and hosting guidance. Hardware needs vary with world generation, view distance, mod activity, entity counts, player behavior and the number of simultaneous players. Treat any precise “minimum” found for a different pack as unverified for Classic.

The published figure sometimes associated with Prominence hosting—8 GB for three to four players plus 1 GB per additional player—is guidance for Prominence II: Hasturian Era managed hosting, not a measurement or requirement for Prominence II Classic. Do not use it as a guaranteed Classic allocation.

A practical way to size a host

  • Reserve memory for the operating system and background services; do not assign all physical RAM to Java.
  • Start with the server-pack instructions and monitor actual memory use, garbage-collection pauses and tick performance during exploration and world generation.
  • Increase allocated memory only when logs and monitoring show sustained pressure; excessive allocation can also cause long garbage-collection pauses.
  • Use a wired connection where possible and monitor upload bandwidth when several players explore new terrain.

Because no Classic benchmark is published, record your own player count, Java allocation and performance observations rather than presenting a number as an official requirement.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Consideration Home server Managed server
Subscription cost No hosting subscription, but you pay for electricity, hardware and internet service. Recurring hosting charge; hardware and connectivity are supplied by the provider.
Availability Offline when the owner’s computer sleeps, restarts, loses power or disconnects. Can remain online while the owner’s computer is off, subject to the provider’s service.
Setup You install Java, extract the pack, configure the server, firewall and router. May offer one-click installation, but you must verify exact Classic loader and release support.
Maintenance You handle backups, updates, crash recovery, moderation and network security. May include backups, DDoS protection and resource scaling, depending on the plan.
Classic compatibility You control the exact Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0 files. Confirm support for the precise branch before paying; the official hosting page reviewed does not explicitly list Classic support.

Choose home hosting when the group is small, play sessions are scheduled and someone can maintain the machine. Choose a managed service when persistent uptime, automated backups or protection from home-network limits matters more than the monthly cost. Do not infer Classic performance from a provider’s published Hasturian Era sizing.

Troubleshoot the most common connection failures

“Incompatible mod set” or missing-mod errors

  • Confirm the client and server are both on Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • Confirm both use Forge or both use NeoForge; never mix them.
  • Compare the exact Prominence release, not just the word “Classic.”
  • Reinstall the client profile or server pack from the same release if files were manually changed.

Server stops during startup

  • Verify that 64-bit Java is installed and is the runtime named by the pack’s instructions.
  • Run the supplied script from the server directory so relative paths to libraries and configs resolve correctly.
  • Read the latest console output and log for a missing file, Java error or mod conflict.
  • Restore the previous pack and backup if the failure began after an update.

Players on the same network can join, but internet friends cannot

  • Check that the host’s private IP has not changed.
  • Confirm the router forwards port 25565, or the custom port in server.properties, to the correct computer.
  • Allow Java through the operating system firewall.
  • Check whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections; use a trusted VPN path if forwarding is impossible.

Players time out or suffer severe lag

  • Keep the host awake and connected by Ethernet where practical.
  • Check CPU, memory, disk and upload usage while players explore new terrain.
  • Reduce view or simulation distance if the server is overloaded, then retest.
  • Inspect logs for repeated crashes or mod errors instead of repeatedly restarting without diagnosis.

The world will not load after changing versions

Stop experimenting on the only copy. Restore the pre-update backup, confirm the intended loader and release, and test the new server pack against a duplicated world. A world backup made before the change is the safest recovery point.

Pre-launch checklist

  • All players have Minecraft Java Edition.
  • The branch is written down: Forge v2.2.0 or NeoForge v2.8.0.
  • Every client and the server use Minecraft 1.20.1.
  • The matching Classic server pack is extracted in its own directory.
  • 64-bit Java meets the pack’s included instructions.
  • The supplied start script or command has been tested.
  • The EULA has been accepted after reviewing its terms.
  • server.properties, operators and whitelist are configured.
  • A clean backup exists before public access or updates.
  • Local-network and external connection tests have succeeded.
  • The host computer will not sleep or shut down during play.

Key facts to remember

Prominence II Classic is a 1.20.1 Java Edition modpack with distinct Forge and NeoForge branches. The named Forge server pack is v2.2.0, while the newest listed Classic release is NeoForge v2.8.0. Matching the loader, Minecraft version and Prominence build is more important than copying a generic launch command or RAM number. Home hosting avoids a hosting subscription but makes you responsible for networking, uptime, backups, updates and recovery. A managed host can simplify those tasks only if it explicitly supports the exact Classic release you selected.
