To host a Project Zomboid Build 42 server, install the dedicated server with SteamCMD, verify the current Build 42 branch before selecting it, forward the game’s UDP ports, edit servertest.ini, and launch the supplied server script. The server is separate from the Project Zomboid game client and can run on Windows or Linux.
The reliable order is: install, verify the branch, open the network ports, stop the server before changing configuration, then start it as a normal user. Build 42 has higher reported memory needs than Build 41, and its branch names and defaults have changed, so do not copy an old beta command without checking the current official wiki or SteamDB listing.

What you need before starting
A self-hosted server gives you control over files, mods, settings and backups, but you must provide the computer, network access and maintenance. The host can be a spare Windows PC, a Linux machine or a rented virtual server. It must stay powered on and connected whenever friends need to play.
Checklist
- A Steam account is not required for the dedicated-server download; SteamCMD supports anonymous login for this app.
- Administrator access to install SteamCMD and create the server directory.
- Router access to create port-forwarding rules, unless the machine has a directly reachable public address.
- Host-firewall access to allow the server’s UDP traffic.
- Enough memory for Build 42 world generation. Some administrators report that 10 GB is a practical floor and that 8 GB systems can be terminated by the out-of-memory process while creating a new world. That is an individual guide’s report, not an official minimum, so treat 10 GB as a cautious starting target rather than a guaranteed requirement.
- A way to identify the host’s local IP address and, for remote players, the network’s public IP address or a stable DNS name.
Self-hosting or a provider
Self-hosting costs no separate game-server subscription, but you handle uptime, operating-system updates, backups, port forwarding and troubleshooting. A managed host usually supplies a public address and a control panel, reducing router work while adding a recurring fee and limiting low-level access. The Project Zomboid setup itself still uses SteamCMD, configuration files and the same network protocols.

Step 1: Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is a command-line tool separate from the normal Steam game client. The commonly documented Project Zomboid dedicated-server app ID is 380870, and guides use anonymous login. The app ID was not confirmed on an official Valve page in the available documentation, so check the current official Project Zomboid wiki or SteamDB entry if Valve changes the listing.
Windows installation
- Download and extract SteamCMD into a folder such as
C:steamcmd. - Create an empty destination directory, for example
C:pz-server. Avoid a protected location such asProgram Filesso the server can update and write logs without permission conflicts. - Open Command Prompt and change to the SteamCMD folder:
cd /d C:steamcmd - Run the installer command:
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:pz-server +login anonymous +app_update 380870 validate +quit - Wait for SteamCMD to report completion before closing the window. The
validateargument checks downloaded files; it can take longer than a normal update.
Linux installation
- Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s package method or Valve’s current SteamCMD download.
- Create a server directory owned by the account that will run the service, such as
$HOME/pz-server. - Run the equivalent command, replacing the path with your actual directory:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /path/to/pz-server +login anonymous +app_update 380870 validate +quit - Keep the directory owned by that ordinary user. Do not run the game server as
root; the Linux launch script is intended to run as a normal account.
Do not assume the Build 42 branch flag
Build 42 branch instructions conflict across currently circulating guides. One guide uses -beta unstable, while another says Build 42 became the default public build after version 42.20. Because branch names and release channels are volatile, install the default branch first unless the current official wiki or SteamDB explicitly instructs a different branch.
If the current documentation identifies a branch, append its exact syntax to the app_update command only after verifying the spelling and whether a password is required. Do not combine an old -beta unstable example with a newer default-branch installation blindly; you can end up on the wrong build or fail to update.
Confirm that the files arrived
After installation, the destination should contain the server launch files, including StartServer64.bat on Windows and start-server.sh on Linux. If neither appears, check that SteamCMD used the intended +force_install_dir path and that the update command completed without an error.
Step 2: Forward the Project Zomboid server ports
Project Zomboid’s standard server settings list DefaultPort 16261 and UDPPort 16262. Forward both as UDP, not TCP, from your router to the host computer’s local IP address. A TCP rule can look correct in a router interface while doing nothing for the game’s initial connection.

Router rules
- Reserve a DHCP address for the server or assign it a static local address, so the forwarding target does not change after a reboot.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page. The label differs by manufacturer: it may be called Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or Applications and Gaming.
- Create a rule for external UDP port
16261to the host’s local IP and UDP port16261. - Create a second UDP rule for external port
16262to the same host and destination port16262. - Save or apply the rules, then restart the router only if its interface requires that step.
Do not forward the ports to the router’s own address, a changing DHCP address or a different computer. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may be impossible even when your local rules are correct; in that case you need a public address, a tunnel or managed hosting.
Host-firewall rules
Allow the server executable or the two UDP ports through the operating-system firewall. On Windows, create inbound UDP rules for local ports 16261 and 16262, or allow the server program when Windows displays its firewall prompt. On Linux, add equivalent UDP allowances in the active firewall (for example, the service managing ufw or firewalld) and reload it. A router rule cannot bypass a host firewall that drops the packet.
The additional TCP-port claim
The PZwiki FAQ says each player slot needs an additional TCP port to stream the world to clients. Guides disagree about whether those extra forwards are required in normal current installations, and the practical impact is not consistent. Treat the wiki statement as a documented claim rather than a universal requirement: begin with UDP 16261 and 16262, then consult the current wiki if logs or connection tests show a world-streaming failure.
A Steam community discussion reports that a “Server port 16262 is closed” warning can be harmless because the server falls back to Steam’s relay. Relay fallback may let players connect, but direct forwarding is still preferable for predictable latency and fewer relay dependencies. A closed-port warning alone does not prove that the installation failed.
Step 3: Generate and edit servertest.ini
The primary configuration file is servertest.ini. On Windows it is stored under %USERPROFILE%Zomboidserver; on Linux the corresponding location is $HOME/Zomboid/Server. The path is under the account that launches the server, not necessarily the directory where SteamCMD installed the binaries.

Create the file safely
- Launch the server once using the platform script described in the next section. The first run creates the Zomboid data directories and configuration files.
- Stop the server cleanly from its console. Do not edit the file while the process is still running.
- Open
servertest.iniin a plain-text editor. - Change only the settings you understand, save the file, and start the server again.
One guide reports that the server rewrites this file during shutdown. That report is low confidence but explains why edits made while the process is active can disappear. The safe procedure is always stop, edit, save, then restart.
Settings most new administrators change
- Server name: Set the name players should see in the browser. Avoid characters your editor or shell may reinterpret.
- Password: Add a password before exposing a private server to the internet. Share it through a trusted channel and change it if it leaks.
- MaxPlayers: Set the intended player count after checking the current Build 42 documentation. Older guides quote a default of 32 and a hard cap of 100, but those figures were not tied to a verified source and should not be treated as current limits.
- UPnP: When
UPnP=true, the server attempts to configure the gateway automatically and falls back to default ports if that attempt fails. Automatic setup does not replace a deliberate firewall rule, and it can conflict with manual forwarding or routers that do not support UPnP. - World and gameplay values: Change these only after creating a backup of the configuration and save data. A typo can prevent startup or produce a world that does not match your players’ expectations.
Back up before changing a live world
Stop the server and copy the Zomboid data directory, including the server configuration and save files, to a separate disk or protected location. Name backups with the date and Build 42 version. Test that a backup can be copied back before making major gameplay or mod changes.
Step 4: Start the server
Windows
- Open the server installation directory.
- Run
StartServer64.bat. If Windows blocks the script, inspect the file’s properties and security prompt rather than downloading a replacement script. - Leave the console window open while the server is running. Watch for the startup message that indicates the world is loaded and the server is accepting connections.
- Use the console’s documented shutdown command or close the server cleanly; do not kill the process during a save.
Linux
- Open a terminal as the ordinary account that owns the server files.
- Change to the installation directory and make the script executable if needed:
chmod +x start-server.sh - Run it with
./start-server.sh. - Use a terminal multiplexer or a service manager if the server must continue after you disconnect, while keeping the process under the ordinary user account.
The documented launch files are StartServer64.bat for Windows and start-server.sh for Linux. Running as root is specifically discouraged because it creates unsafe ownership and permission consequences for generated files.
Step 5: Connect and verify the installation
Test locally first
From a game client on the same network, connect using the host’s private address and the configured server port. A local test separates server and configuration errors from router or internet-provider problems. If local clients cannot connect, inspect the server console, the configuration path and the host firewall before changing router settings.

Test from outside the network
Ask a friend on a different connection to use the public address and server port. Testing from inside the same network using the public address can fail on routers without NAT loopback, so it is not a definitive internet test. Confirm that the public address has not changed if your provider assigns it dynamically.

What a successful test proves
- The launch script can read the installed binaries and configuration.
- The selected Build 42 branch is compatible with the client.
- The host firewall permits the traffic.
- The router sends UDP 16261 and 16262 to the correct machine.
- The server can create or load its world without running out of memory.
Troubleshooting connection failures
Friends cannot see or join the server
- Verify the server is running and has finished loading the world.
- Check that the friend is using the public address, not the host’s private address.
- Confirm both router rules are UDP and point to the host’s current local IP.
- Check the Windows or Linux firewall for UDP 16261 and 16262.
- Confirm that the client and server are on the same Build 42 branch and compatible version.
- Only after those checks investigate carrier-grade NAT, double NAT or a provider-level firewall.
Protocol is the first thing to check: a TCP-only forward will not substitute for the required UDP rules. The same applies to firewall rules that allow TCP while dropping UDP.
The console says a port is closed
A closed 16262 warning can occur even when players connect through Steam’s relay, according to a Steam community discussion. Treat relay access as a fallback, not confirmation that direct forwarding works. Keep the UDP forwarding in place and test from an external network before deciding whether the warning is harmless for your group.
The server starts, then exits or rewrites settings
- Read the final console lines for a malformed setting or missing file.
- Check that the account running the process can write to both the installation directory and its Zomboid data directory.
- Stop the process before editing
servertest.ini; a shutdown rewrite can overwrite changes made during runtime. - Restore the last known-good configuration backup, then reapply one change at a time.
New-world generation kills the process
Some administrators report that Build 42 uses substantially more memory than Build 41 and that an 8 GB machine can be killed while generating a new world. This is not an official minimum, but it is a useful diagnostic signal: close unrelated applications, monitor memory and swap, and try the generation again on a host with more available RAM. Do not infer from one successful small test that a larger world or more players will fit the same memory budget.
Players experience poor map streaming
Do not increase the player limit based on an old guide’s stated cap. The often-repeated figures of 32 as the default and 100 as a hard cap were not verified here, and counts above 32 are reported to cause poor map streaming in some guides. Use the current official documentation and increase the limit gradually while monitoring memory, CPU, network use and the players’ actual experience.
Keeping a Build 42 server maintainable
Update deliberately
Build 42 branch names and defaults can change. Before each update, check the official Project Zomboid wiki and SteamDB for the current public or test branch, then record the branch and version in your maintenance notes. Do not add a beta flag merely because an older tutorial used one.

Schedule backups and restarts
Back up the Zomboid data directory before updates, mod changes and configuration experiments. Restart during a quiet period so the server can flush its save cleanly. Keep at least one backup that is not stored on the same disk as the live world.
Limit exposure
Use a strong server password, forward only the required ports, keep the operating system patched and avoid running unrelated services on the game host. If you enable UPnP, understand that it allows the application to request gateway mappings; manual rules are easier to audit.

The PZwiki Build 42 page is reported to place the stable release on 29 July 2026, but that date came from a search snippet rather than a confirmed page view. Treat it as a date to verify, not as a permanent rule for branch selection. The same caution applies to the exact beta flag, player-count limits, memory requirements and any port additions beyond UDP 16261 and 16262.
For a fresh installation, the safest evidence-based sequence is therefore: use SteamCMD with app ID 380870 and anonymous login; leave out a beta flag until the current branch is verified; forward UDP 16261 and 16262; create or edit servertest.ini only while stopped; and launch with the platform’s supplied script as an ordinary user.
