To host Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward, install Java 8, use the pack’s 3.4.11F server files from CurseForge, allocate at least 6 GB of memory (more for a larger group), and start the Forge 1.12.2 server. Self-hosting gives you control but requires Java, firewall, router, storage, backups, and updates; a managed Minecraft host handles most of that setup for you.

Which Project Ozone server are you setting up?

“Project Ozone” refers to several Minecraft modpacks. The procedure in this guide is for Project Ozone 3: A New Way Forward (PO3), the pack listed on CurseForge. PO3 runs on Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Project Ozone 2 is a different pack with different files and should not be mixed into this installation.

At the time of writing, CurseForge lists 3.4.11F Server Files. TechBloat describes 3.4.11F as the final PO3 release. Pack files and requirements can change, so verify the current server-file label on the CurseForge listing before downloading.

Hardware and software requirements

Component Practical requirement Qualification
Operating system Windows or a Linux distribution that can run Java 8 The commands differ slightly, but the Forge pack is the same.
Java Java 8 (1.8), 64-bit Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2 is the reason Java 8 is recommended.
Memory Plan for 6 GB as the starting allocation; 8–10 GB is more appropriate for five to ten players CurseForge states that PO3 needs at least 6 GB and at most 8 GB to load. GameTeam suggests about 6 GB for two or three players and 8–10 GB for five to ten. Host listings quoting 4 GB are optimistic for a multiplayer group.
Storage An SSD with several gigabytes free for the pack, world, logs, and backups A GameTeam setup guide calls SSD storage essential; the exact world size depends on exploration.
CPU A processor with strong single-core performance; 3.5 GHz or higher is the guidance in one setup guide This is a low-confidence, guide-level recommendation rather than an official benchmark.
Network A stable connection and an available server port Players outside your home network need a router forward as well as a local firewall rule.

Do not give the server every gigabyte in the machine. Leave memory for the operating system, Java overhead, file caching, and any other services. A computer with 8 GB total RAM is therefore a poor candidate for assigning the full 8 GB to PO3.

Choose self-hosting or a managed host

Decision factor Self-hosted machine Managed Minecraft host
Setup effort You install Java and Forge, create the world, configure the firewall, and forward the router port. A control panel generally provides a one-click modpack installation and handles the network endpoint.
Control Full control over files, Java executable, versions, scripts, backups, and operating-system settings. Control depends on the provider’s panel and permitted file access.
Memory ceiling Limited by the physical or virtual machine you own. Limited by the plan you purchase; check that it can provide at least the PO3 allocation you need.
Cost model Uses existing hardware and electricity, or a virtual server you rent separately. A recurring hosting charge, usually tied to allocated RAM and storage.
Uptime and networking You are responsible for power, broadband outages, dynamic addresses, and router configuration. The provider normally supplies the public address, port, monitoring, and data-center connectivity.

Choose self-hosting when you want unrestricted access to the installation and are comfortable maintaining Java, networking, and backups. Choose managed hosting when other players need a reliable address and you do not want to troubleshoot port forwarding or operating-system updates.

Download the correct PO3 server files

  1. Open the Project Ozone 3 listing on CurseForge and locate the server-files download. At the time of writing it is labeled 3.4.11F Server Files.
  2. Download the server package to a new, empty directory dedicated to this server. Do not unpack it into your client’s Minecraft directory.
  3. Keep every server-file version consistent with the clients. GameTeam recommends version 3.4.6 or newer because older versions had expert-mode bugs; using 3.4.11F avoids those older releases when it is available.
  4. Do not substitute a client modpack archive for the server package. Client and server files contain different launchers, configuration, and libraries.

Create a simple path such as C:PO3Server on Windows or /opt/po3 on Linux. Avoid placing the world inside a cloud-synchronised folder; simultaneous sync and world writes can corrupt files.

Install and verify Java 8

Install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime or development kit, then verify that the shell resolves the intended executable:

java -version

The output should identify version 1.8. If it reports Java 17, 21, or another newer release, do not assume it will work. Guides for PO3 identify newer Java releases as a frequent cause of Forge 1.12.2 launch failures. GameTeam specifically suggests Java 8u321 or a similar Java 8 build because some later Java 8 updates reportedly caused mod problems; that build advice comes from one guide, not an official Forge compatibility statement.

If the machine needs a newer Java version for another application, leave the system default alone and call Java 8 by its full path in the PO3 start script. On Windows, that might look like this after you confirm the actual installation path:

Prepare the first launch

Rename the Forge server jar to forge-server.jar if its downloaded filename is unwieldy. This keeps the start script stable when you replace files during a planned update.

From the server directory, launch it once with a conservative heap. The following command is an example for a host with enough physical RAM:

java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge-server.jar nogui

-Xmx sets the maximum heap and is the setting that must reflect your PO3 allocation. The example gives Java a 6 GB ceiling, matching the official minimum. Increase it only when the machine has headroom and the player count or world activity requires it. The -Xms value is the initial heap; keeping it below the maximum leaves the operating system room during startup.

The first launch normally creates configuration files and stops because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. Open eula.txt, read the license, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to it. Start the same command again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready. The initial run can take considerably longer than later starts while Forge builds caches and generates the world.

For repeatable starts, save a script in the server directory. A Windows start.bat can contain:

@echo off
cd /d C:PO3Server
"C:Program FilesJavajre1.8.0_321binjava.exe" -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge-server.jar nogui
pause

On Linux, a corresponding start.sh is:

#!/bin/sh
cd /opt/po3
/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/bin/java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge-server.jar nogui

Adjust the Java path and server directory to match your installation. On Linux, make the script executable with chmod +x start.sh, then run it from the server directory.

Set the world type, difficulty, and access controls

Garden of Glass generation

GameTeam’s PO3 steps recommend the Garden of Glass world type. This is selected through the level-type and generator-settings entries in server.properties. Stop the server before editing the file, set both entries to the values specified by the current PO3 server instructions, save it, and then start the server again. World-generation settings apply when a world is created; changing them later does not safely convert an existing world.

If you already generated a normal world, make a complete backup before deleting or renaming its world directory to create a new Garden of Glass world. Never test a new generator by overwriting the only copy of a shared world.

Basic server.properties choices

Review the generated server.properties before inviting players. Set the message of the day, difficulty, PvP policy, view distance, and whitelist according to your group. Keep changes conservative at first: high view distance and many simultaneous chunk loads increase CPU and memory pressure in a large modpack.

Operators and whitelist

Use the server console to grant operator privileges only to trusted administrators. A whitelist is appropriate for a private group because it prevents an unknown player who discovers the address from joining. Test one ordinary player account as well as an operator account so that permissions are not accidentally broader than intended.

Open the server to local and internet players

The default Minecraft Java port is 25565. The actual listening port is whatever number appears as server-port in server.properties; if you change that value, use the new number everywhere.

  1. Allow the chosen port through the host operating system’s firewall, restricted to the server application or the required network profile where possible.
  2. If players are on the same home network, give them the host’s private address and the configured port. Test this path first.
  3. For players outside the home network, create a router port-forwarding rule from the external port to the server computer’s private IP address. Use the Minecraft Java port shown in server.properties, normally TCP 25565.
  4. Reserve the server computer’s private IP in the router or configure a static address. Otherwise, a DHCP lease change can silently point the forward at the wrong machine.
  5. Have an external player test the connection while the server is running. Some routers cannot test their own public address from inside the LAN, so a phone on cellular data is a useful check.

If local connections work but outside connections fail, the problem is usually the router forward, the host firewall, carrier-grade NAT, or a changing public IP—not the PO3 files. If neither local nor external connections work, confirm the server is listening on the same port shown in server.properties and that the console has completed startup.

Choose a memory allocation that matches your group

The figures published for PO3 are not identical, so treat them as a planning range rather than a single universal number:

Source or scenario Published figure How to use it
CurseForge pack listing At least 6 GB; at most 8 GB to load Use 6 GB as the official floor and do not interpret “at most 8 GB” as a promise that every world needs exactly 8 GB.
GameTeam, 2026 About 6 GB for two to three players A reasonable starting point for a small private server.
GameTeam, 2026 About 8–10 GB for five to ten players Allow additional headroom for exploration, automation, and simultaneous chunk loading.
StickyPiston listing 4 GB minimum; 5 GB or more for a public server Lower than the official CurseForge floor; likely optimistic for a sustained multiplayer PO3 world.
BisectHosting listing 4 GB recommended for smooth operation A provider-specific recommendation, not a replacement for the pack author’s requirement.
Old ServerMiner listing 3,072 MB minimum Outdated and unsuitable as a current PO3 planning figure.

Increase -Xmx only after checking actual free memory and server behavior. More heap cannot repair a wrong Java version, a broken mod installation, or a CPU-bound tick rate. If the operating system starts swapping, lower the allocation or move the server to a machine with more physical RAM.

Check performance before inviting everyone

  1. Start the server and wait until the console reports readiness without repeated errors.
  2. Join from one client using the exact PO3 version and configuration that the server uses.
  3. Travel through a small area, place and break blocks, open inventories, and load a few new chunks. Watch for crashes, severe pauses, or a steadily growing error log.
  4. Add players gradually. A server that is responsive for one player may need more memory or stronger CPU performance once several players explore different directions.
  5. Keep the console visible during the first sessions. Stop the server cleanly from the console rather than killing the process, especially after players have modified machines or chunks.

Single-core performance matters because the main Minecraft tick loop cannot simply divide all work across every CPU core. An SSD reduces world-load and chunk-save delays. These points come from setup guidance rather than a published PO3 benchmark, so use your own tick-time and player experience to decide whether a hardware change is justified.

Troubleshoot the failures most owners see

The server exits immediately or Forge reports a launch error

  • Run java -version in the same script that starts the server. If it is not Java 8, use the full path to the Java 8 executable.
  • Confirm that the server package is PO3 server files, not a client archive, and that every file came from the same pack version.
  • Read the first meaningful error in the console or log rather than the final “server stopped” line. Newer Java releases are a commonly reported cause of Forge 1.12.2 failures.

The process crashes while loading or reports an out-of-memory error

  • Verify that the machine has more physical RAM than the value passed to -Xmx.
  • Start at the official 6 GB floor, close other memory-heavy applications, and move toward the 8–10 GB range only for a larger group and a machine that can support it.
  • Check that you did not accidentally set conflicting memory values in a hosting panel and a shell script.

Players cannot connect

  • Check server-port, the host firewall, and the router forward. The default is 25565, but the file setting wins.
  • Use the host’s private address for LAN players and the public address for internet players.
  • Confirm that the server is actually running and listening before testing the port.

Clients are rejected for missing mods or mismatched versions

  • Install the same PO3 release on every client and use the matching server files.
  • Do not add or remove individual mods casually. A modpack’s configuration and dependency versions are designed to work together.

The world is the wrong type

  • Stop the server and inspect level-type and generator-settings in server.properties.
  • Remember that generation settings affect a new world. Back up the existing world before creating another one.

Backups, updates, and safe shutdowns

Back up the world directory, configuration files, scripts, and whitelist before changing the pack version or generator. A useful routine is a scheduled copy while the server is stopped, plus an occasional off-machine copy. Keep more than one historical backup so a corrupted save is not the only recoverable version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before updating, record the current PO3 release, Java build, memory flags, and server.properties changes. Download the newer server package into a separate directory, copy only the documented world and configuration data, and test with a backup before replacing the live installation. Never overwrite the only working server files during an update.

Use the console’s normal stop command and wait for the process to exit. Abrupt power loss while chunks are saving is more dangerous than a clean shutdown and can make the next launch appear to be a mod problem.

What to recheck when requirements change

Project Ozone 3’s version, Java compatibility advice, and memory guidance are not guaranteed to remain unchanged. Before a fresh deployment, recheck the CurseForge listing for the current server-file label and RAM statement, then verify that the clients and server use the same release. The figures above describe the 2026 guidance available for PO3, not a guarantee for a future pack revision.
