“One Block” can mean either a BentoBox/OneBlock plugin world or a modded One Block pack. The plugin method runs on a normal Paper/Spigot-style server and needs no Forge or NeoForge. A modded pack requires the exact Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime and mod files that the pack specifies—usually NeoForge for current packs. Choose the method first, then follow the matching setup below.
Choose the right kind of One Block server
Before downloading anything, identify what the pack or tutorial actually describes. These two setups are not interchangeable.

If a download page says “server pack,” “NeoForge,” or lists mods, use the modded instructions. If it tells you to install BentoBox and a OneBlock addon, use the plugin instructions.
What you need before installation
For a plugin OneBlock server
- A Minecraft server implementation that supports Bukkit/Spigot plugins, such as Paper or Spigot, matching the Minecraft version you intend to run.
- File access to the server’s
pluginsdirectory and permission to restart the server. - The BentoBox plugin and the OneBlock addon downloaded from their official project pages.
- A backup location for the server folder before changing plugins or phase files.
For a NeoForge modpack server
- The pack’s exact Minecraft version and loader designation. Forge mods do not run on Fabric, and NeoForge is not a drop-in replacement for Forge on versions after 1.20.1.
- The Java version required by the pack. A commonly used baseline is Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer, Java 17 for 1.17 through 1.20.4, and Java 8 for legacy packs. Treat that as a starting point and follow the pack’s documentation if it specifies something different.
- The official server pack, when one is provided. A server pack is preferable because it normally separates server files from client-only files.
- Enough disk space for the complete instance, generated world and backups. Memory settings must be sized for the pack, not for vanilla Minecraft.
- A host with a restart control and file manager, or a computer on which you can run Java and keep the process online.
Method 1: Install the plugin-based OneBlock server
This is the simplest route when you want the One Block island progression rather than a collection of mods. BentoBox supplies the game framework; the OneBlock addon supplies the phases.

1. Prepare and start the base server once
- Install the server software for the Minecraft version required by your players.
- Start it once so it creates the normal folder structure, then stop it cleanly.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA in
eula.txtonly after reading its terms, changingeula=falsetoeula=truewhen you agree. - Keep a copy of the newly created folder as a clean rollback point.
2. Add BentoBox
- Download the BentoBox jar that supports your server’s Minecraft version.
- Place the jar directly in the server’s
pluginsfolder; do not leave it inside a zip file or an extra download folder. - Start the server once. BentoBox creates its data directories and then the server can be stopped for the addon installation.
3. Add the OneBlock addon
- Download the OneBlock addon version compatible with your BentoBox and Minecraft versions.
- Place the addon jar in BentoBox’s
addonsdirectory, commonly underplugins/BentoBox/addons. Use the directory created by your BentoBox build if its layout differs. - Restart the server and read the console. A successful load should show BentoBox discovering the addon without a dependency or version error.
4. Configure phases and progression
After the first successful load, the addon creates its data and phase files. A phase defines the material pool generated as players break the central block, the relative weight of each material, chest loot, spawned mobs and how many blocks must be mined before the next phase begins. Stop the server before editing these files, make one change at a time, then restart and test.
- Block generation: the blocks that can appear in that phase.
- Weights: the relative chance of each block; a higher weight makes an entry more likely compared with entries in the same pool.
- Chest loot: items and quantities available from phase chests.
- Mob spawns: entities that can appear and any phase-specific weighting.
- Phase length: the number of blocks required before progression advances.
Keep the original phase files in a backup directory. Invalid YAML or JSON, depending on the addon release, can prevent the addon from loading. If the server reports a parsing error, restore the last working file and reapply the edit carefully.

5. Create and test an island
- Use the addon’s documented command to create a OneBlock island for an operator account.
- Break the starting block repeatedly and confirm that blocks, loot, mobs and phase advancement behave as intended.
- Test a second player account, including island joining and leaving, before inviting a larger group.
- Only after the test succeeds, set the server’s normal spawn, permissions and whitelist rules.
Because this route is plugin-based, adding NeoForge or a client mod does not improve it. Installing an unrelated modloader can create conflicts without changing the OneBlock gameplay.
Method 2: Host a modded One Block pack with NeoForge
Use this method when the One Block experience is distributed as a modpack. The server and every player must agree on the pack’s Minecraft version, loader and mod set.

1. Confirm the pack identity
- Open the pack’s CurseForge or Modrinth listing and record the Minecraft version, loader label and pack release.
- Confirm that the release is built for NeoForge. A pack labelled Fabric or Forge needs that loader instead; do not substitute NeoForge merely because the names look similar.
- Check whether a server pack is available and whether the author lists a Java requirement or special startup instructions.
Do this before creating a world. Changing the loader or Minecraft version later can invalidate configs, world data or individual mods.
2. Install the required Java runtime
Install the Java major version required by the pack and make sure the server process uses that executable rather than an older system default. The frequently used mapping is Java 21 for 1.20.5 and later, Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 8 for older packs, but the pack’s own documentation takes priority. Verify with java -version in the same account and shell that will start the server.

Use the author’s server pack when available. If there is no server pack, install the normal pack in a launcher, then copy the entire instance contents into a new server directory. Copying only the mods folder is insufficient: configs, scripts, libraries and generated launch files may also be required.
4. Remove client-only content
Dedicated servers cannot load many client-side visual or input mods. Shader loaders, resource-pack helpers and some HUD or performance mods are common examples. Remove a mod only when its project page or the server’s startup error identifies it as client-only. Keep a record of every removal so players can mirror the final server-compatible list.

There is no universal filename rule for client-only status. Some projects publish separate client and server jars; others mark the distinction in their metadata. Trial and error may be necessary when the pack documentation is incomplete.
5. Install NeoForge in the server directory
- Download the NeoForge installer for the exact Minecraft version selected in step 1.
- Run the installer and choose Install Server.
- Point it at the server directory containing the pack files. Installing into a different folder can leave the launch scripts unable to find the libraries.
- Allow the installer to create its libraries and launch files, then run the server once.
- Stop the process when it creates
eula.txt, review the EULA, seteula=trueif you agree, and start it again.
The NeoForge project’s installer documentation is the authority if its screens or generated files differ from these labels.

6. Start the server
Prefer the generated script because it carries the loader’s current arguments:
- Linux: make the generated script executable if necessary, then run
./run.sh. - Windows: run
run.bat.

java -Xms4G -Xmx8G @libraries/net/neoforged/neoforge/*/unix_args.txt noguiThe 4G initial and 8G maximum values are only an example. Adjust them to the pack’s documented requirement and your host’s available memory; allocating more RAM than the machine has can cause swapping or an operating-system crash. The wildcard path and argument file can differ between NeoForge releases, which is why the generated script is safer.
7. Verify the modded installation
- Watch the console for a clean completion rather than stopping at the first warning.
- Confirm that the expected NeoForge version and mod count appear in the startup log.
- Join locally with a client running the same Minecraft version, NeoForge version and pack release.
- Create a test world or load the intended One Block world only after the mod list reaches the menu without missing-mod errors.
Using a hosting panel instead of a self-managed machine
A managed panel removes most Java and process-management work, but its controls are vendor-specific. The common workflow for a panel that supports modpacks is:

- Search for the pack by its exact name.
- Select the Minecraft and pack version that matches your players.
- Choose Reinstall this version (or the panel’s equivalent). Reinstalling normally replaces the current server files, so download a world and configuration backup first.
- Start the server and read the console for missing dependencies or an EULA prompt.
- Use the panel’s file manager to remove client-only mods, edit configs and upload backups when required.
Panel shortcuts do not remove compatibility requirements. You still need the same loader, Java level and client pack. A panel may also lock you to the NeoForge builds it offers, so check that its selected version exactly matches the pack release.

Make players connect successfully
- For a plugin server, give players the server address and the supported Minecraft version. They normally do not install BentoBox or the addon on their clients.
- For a modded server, distribute the exact pack release and loader version. “Almost the same” versions can still produce a missing-mod or registry-mismatch disconnect.
- Keep server and client configs aligned when a mod requires matching settings.
- Ask players to remove optional client-only additions that change the pack’s required version or introduce incompatible dependencies.
For people outside your home network, the host must expose the Minecraft server port through its firewall and router or provide an externally reachable address. On a private LAN, players can use the host computer’s local address. The exact port and networking interface depend on the server software and host; use the value shown in server.properties and your hosting provider’s documentation rather than assuming a custom port.

Troubleshooting common failures

Updating without destroying the world
- Stop the server cleanly; never replace jars while the process is writing world data.
- Make a dated copy of the entire server directory, including worlds, configs, phase files and scripts.
- Read the pack or addon release notes for Minecraft, loader and dependency changes.
- Test the update on a separate copy first. Do not use your only production world for compatibility testing.
- Replace the server pack or addon files, then start and inspect the complete log.
- If the world or configuration fails, stop the server and restore the dated backup rather than repeatedly changing files in place.
Recommended decision
Choose the plugin route when your goal is the classic One Block progression—one generated block, configurable phases, loot and mobs—with the smallest client setup. Choose the NeoForge route only when the experience is distributed as a modpack or depends on mods that the plugin cannot provide. In either case, lock the Minecraft version first, keep a backup before changes and test with one account before inviting the whole group.

Can I install a NeoForge One Block modpack on a normal plugin server?
No. A plugin OneBlock world and a NeoForge modpack use different server software. Install BentoBox and its addon for the plugin experience, or install NeoForge and the pack’s mods for the modded experience.

Usually not. BentoBox and the OneBlock addon run on the server; players connect with the client version supported by that server.
Why is the server pack preferable to copying a launcher instance?
A server pack is prepared for dedicated-server use. A launcher instance often contains client-only visual, shader or input mods that must be removed before the server can start.
What should I back up before changing OneBlock phases?
Back up the complete server folder, including world data, BentoBox/OneBlock data, phase files, configuration files and launch scripts. A phase-file copy alone cannot restore a damaged world.
Can I change the Java version after the world has been created?
Change Java only when the pack and loader support the target runtime, and test on a copied server first. A Java change does not make an incompatible mod or loader version compatible.
