To host the actual New Life SMP, install its Fabric modpack rather than a Bukkit or Paper plugin. The latest official package identified is New Life SMP v8 for Minecraft 1.19.2, released on 13 July 2023. It gives every player six lives and uses Origins to assign a class after death. Allocate about 6 GB of RAM for a small server, or at least 7 GB when several players and larger builds are expected. There is no confirmed official 1.21 release, so every player must use the same 1.19.2 pack.
What New Life SMP actually is
New Life SMP is a Minecraft modpack, not a single plugin that can be dropped into an otherwise vanilla server. Its defining rules come from the pack: each player has six lives, and the Origins system assigns a random Origin (class) when a player dies. Hosting it therefore means running the complete Fabric mod and configuration set on both the server and every player’s client.

It also indicates that only the author can update the main pack to a newer Minecraft version. Do not advertise the pack as a 1.21 modpack unless an official release appears later.
Do not confuse similarly named packs
A separate Modrinth project called The New Life Modpack is a fan-made pack for players on a different server. The material reviewed for that project describes 1.21.x compatibility, performance features and voice chat, but not the six-lives and Origins rules. A 1.20.1 datapack called New Life Origins 1.0.0, published 9 January 2024, is also separate. Confirm the project name, Minecraft version and loader before downloading anything.

A hosted service that offers a modpack installer can pre-install New Life SMP automatically. Self-hosting is more flexible and avoids a recurring host fee, but the machine must remain online, reachable and sufficiently resourced. If your goal is specifically the New Life experience, choose the first or second row; choose Paper only when you intentionally want a different server.
Requirements checklist
- The exact New Life SMP v8 files for Minecraft 1.19.2 and Fabric.
- A server allocation of about 6 GB RAM for a small group; reserve at least 7 GB when the group, view distance or world activity is larger.
- Enough disk space for the server, mod files, logs, backups and world growth.
- A Java runtime accepted by the Fabric 1.19.2 server installer.
- Every player using the same Minecraft version, Fabric profile, modpack version and configuration.
- A stable connection. Self-hosting also requires firewall and router configuration if players connect from outside your home.
- A separate backup location before changing world settings or importing an existing world.
Option A: install New Life SMP with a hosting provider
The names of control-panel buttons vary, but the sequence is consistent. Providers that list New Life SMP in a modpack catalog can install the files for you; otherwise use their file manager and the server files supplied with the pack.

- Create the server with enough memory. Select a plan with at least 6 GB RAM. Treat 7 GB or more as the safer starting point for a larger group, frequent exploration or substantial builds.
- Select the loader and game version. Choose Fabric and Minecraft 1.19.2. Do not select a similarly named 1.21 pack or an unrelated Origins pack.
- Install the pack. In the panel’s modpack installer, search for New Life SMP and verify that the author is DAQEM and the selected file is v8. If the catalog does not contain it, download the server package associated with the official listing and upload the files through the panel’s file manager.
- Start once, then stop. The first launch creates configuration files and the world folder. Wait for generation to finish, then stop the server cleanly before editing files.
- Set the server identity. Edit
server.propertiesto choose a uniquelevel-name, message of the day, view distance and player limit appropriate to your memory allocation. Keep a new level name when changing world-generation or hardcore state. - Apply access controls. Enable the whitelist before sharing the address. Add each player with
/whitelist add PlayerNamefrom the console or as an operator, then enable enforcement so unlisted accounts cannot join. - Upload an existing world only when versions match. Stop the server, make a backup, upload the world folder, and set
level-nameto that folder’s name. A world generated for a different Minecraft version or mod list can fail to load or lose content. - Start and test privately. Join with one client first. Check that the Origins screen appears, the life count behaves as expected, and the server log shows no missing-mod or registry errors before inviting the group.
Hosted-server pitfalls
- The server starts vanilla: the wrong loader or a plain Minecraft installation was selected. Stop it, install Fabric 1.19.2 and verify that the New Life mod and dependency files are present.
- Players receive a mod mismatch: the client and server are on different pack files. Have everyone install the same v8 profile rather than adding individual mods by hand.
- Repeated crashes during startup: inspect the latest log for the first error, not the final cascade. Check memory allocation, loader version and duplicate or missing files before changing world data.
- A world appears reset: the panel may be using a different
level-name. Stop the server and compare the property with the uploaded folder name.
Option B: self-host the Fabric server
Self-hosting follows the same file layout as a rented server, but you install and maintain the runtime yourself. Use the server files for the official 1.19.2 release, not a client-only export.
- Prepare a dedicated directory. Create a folder such as
new-life-serveron a drive with room for the world and backups. Keep the directory separate from your personal client instance. - Install the required Java runtime. Run the Fabric server installer for Minecraft 1.19.2 and choose the server installation directory. Follow the installer’s runtime requirement rather than mixing files from another Minecraft version.
- Copy the New Life server files. Place the pack’s server-side mods, libraries and configuration files in the generated directory. Do not assume that a client profile alone is a complete server.
- Accept the EULA when prompted. Start the server once with the launch command supplied by the Fabric installer. If it creates
eula.txt, read the license and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Launch with a controlled heap. A typical command is
java -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui; adjust the maximum to the memory you actually reserved and leave room for the operating system. Use the exact jar name created by your installer. - Stop before configuration. In the server console, use
stopand wait for the process to close. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten during shutdown. - Configure and restart. Edit
server.properties, review the generated config files, and launch the server again. Keep the console open during the first real start so dependency or registry errors are visible. - Make the server reachable. Allow the Java process through the host firewall. For a home network, forward the Minecraft server port configured in
server.propertiesto the host computer and give players your public address. Never expose the console or remote administration credentials.
Keeping a self-hosted machine reliable
Disable sleep, use a wired connection when possible, and schedule operating-system updates outside play sessions. Record the exact pack version, loader version and Java command in a text file so you can rebuild the server after a disk failure. A server that is online only while the host’s laptop is awake is not an always-on SMP.
Configure server.properties safely
Always stop the server before editing this file. One configuration guide warns that changes made while the server is running can be written back over your edits when it shuts down.

Should you enable Minecraft hardcore?
Hardcore is a separate built-in server setting; it does not require a plugin. Set hardcore=true while the server is stopped, then create a new world. Existing worlds do not reliably become hardcore merely because the property changes. For an existing world, guides describe editing level.dat with an NBT editor such as NBTExplorer, but make and test a complete backup first.
The New Life pack already has a six-life system. Adding vanilla hardcore changes the consequence of the final death and can make recovery impossible, so agree on the rule before enabling it. A safer rollout is to test hardcore in a disposable world, confirm how the pack handles deaths, and only then create the community world.
Available setup guides disagree about the interaction between hardcore and the difficulty line: one says hardcore disregards the difficulty value and uses hard, while another says the line is ignored and can simply be left at hard for consistency. Treat the hardcore flag as the control, not the difficulty line, and verify behavior in the exact 1.19.2 build before promising players a particular setting.
Hardcore setup procedure
- Stop the server with
stopand wait until the process exits. - Back up the entire server directory, especially the current world.
- Set
hardcore=trueinserver.properties. - Choose a new
level-name, or move the old world folder out of the server directory. Do not delete a world until the backup opens successfully. - Set
white-list=true,enforce-whitelist=trueand, for a build-friendly private spawn,spawn-protection=0. - Start the server and test death behavior with an administrator account before inviting everyone.
Install and prepare player clients
Every participant must run Minecraft 1.19.2 with Fabric and the identical New Life SMP v8 client profile. Give players the official pack listing rather than a random “New Life” download. A client on 1.21, a different Origins pack or a manually assembled mod folder can connect only if it happens to contain precisely the same registries and dependencies, so standardize the installation instead.
- Have each player launch the profile once while offline to confirm that the loader starts.
- Distribute the server address only after the whitelist is active.
- Ask players to remove duplicate versions of the same mod if the launcher reports a conflict.
- Keep a copy of the known-good client profile for players who reinstall their game.
Alternative: build a Paper SMP with similar social rules
If the group does not want a client modpack, use Paper and design a separate survival ruleset. This will not be New Life SMP because Paper does not supply the pack’s Origins classes or six-life implementation.

A 2026 setup guide recommends an always-on host, a whitelist, grief protection and a fair difficulty and spawn. Common plugin choices named in that guidance are:
- CoreProtect for logging and rolling back block changes.
- EssentialsX for common administrative and player commands.
- GriefPrevention for player claims.
- WorldEdit for administrator building and controlled world preparation.
Install plugins one at a time, restart, and test permissions with a non-operator account. Define your own life limit with documented commands or scoreboard logic rather than telling players they are receiving the official New Life mechanics.
Performance and world-management practices
Allocate memory based on activity
Start at 6 GB for the modpack and monitor the server’s actual use. Raise the allocation toward 7 GB or more when a group explores new terrain simultaneously, keeps many chunks loaded or builds heavily. More memory cannot repair a wrong loader, a broken mod or a slow disk; diagnose those separately.
Control exploration
New terrain generation is usually the most demanding period for a small SMP. Encourage players to spread out gradually, pre-generate only with tools verified for the exact modpack, and avoid adding extra world-generation mods after the world has started. Changing generation mods mid-world can create missing features or abrupt borders.
Back up before every irreversible change
- Stop the server before copying the world so region files are consistent.
- Keep at least one backup away from the machine running the server.
- Label backups with the Minecraft version, pack version and date.
- Periodically restore a copy to a temporary directory to prove that the backup is usable.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“Incompatible version” or “missing mods”
Compare the client and server line by line: Minecraft 1.19.2, Fabric, New Life SMP v8 and the same dependency versions. Do not solve the message by adding a 1.21 file or a mod from another Origins pack.

The server crashes while loading the world
Stop repeated restart loops. Restore the last known-good backup, then inspect the first meaningful error in the log. Check that the world was created with the same pack and that no client-only mod was copied into the server’s mod directory.
Hardcore did not take effect
Confirm that the server was stopped when hardcore=true was saved and that a new world was created afterward. Check level-name so you are not loading an older folder. For an existing world, restore the backup and use an NBT editor only after verifying the editor’s handling of level.dat.
Players cannot join from outside the host’s network
Verify the server is listening on the configured port, the operating-system firewall permits Java, and the router forwards that port to the correct local machine. Test from a separate network; a local connection can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.

Look for forced shutdowns, disk-full errors and incorrect world-folder names. Always issue stop rather than killing the process, and keep the server directory out of automatic cleanup or synchronization tools that can overwrite files.

- The server has approximately 6 GB RAM, with additional headroom for a larger group.
- All clients use the identical modpack profile.
- The server starts cleanly once before the address is shared.

- Hardcore was tested in a new disposable world if you chose to enable it.
- A dated backup exists before the first public session.

What Minecraft version should I use?
Use Minecraft 1.19.2 with New Life SMP v8, the newest official file identified in the 13 July 2023 listing. No official 1.21 build was found.
How much RAM does the server need?
Plan for about 6 GB for a small modded server. A listing summary suggests 7 GB or more for groups, especially when exploration and builds are heavy.
