How to Host a New Beginnings Modpack Server in Minecraft

“New Beginnings” refers to two different Minecraft packs. The original HR: New Beginnings targets Minecraft 1.15.2, while HR: New Beginnings 2 targets Minecraft 1.16.5 in the currently listed files. Identify the pack and exact release first; then install that release’s server package, matching Forge build, and compatible Java runtime. A client and server on different pack, Minecraft, or Forge versions will not form a reliable connection.

The safest setup is to use the author’s server download rather than copying a client archive, keep the Java heap fixed by making -Xms and -Xmx equal, and verify every version in the CurseForge Files tab before starting. The version listings are several years old and may be cached, so treat the dates below as identification clues, not proof that they are the newest releases.

First, identify which New Beginnings pack you have

Do not begin by searching for a generic “New Beginnings server.” Two projects share the name but use different Minecraft generations and therefore different mod, Forge and Java combinations.

These listings appear cached and are not a guarantee of current availability. A newer file, a revised server archive or a different loader build may have been published since those dates. Record the exact file name and version you select. Give that same information to every player so everyone installs the same client release.

Why the distinction matters

Minecraft 1.15.2 and 1.16.5 use different modding environments. A 1.15.2 client cannot join a 1.16.5 server simply because both packs are called New Beginnings. The same is true for different pack revisions: changed mods, configuration files or registries can cause a missing-mod error, a rejected handshake or a world that behaves differently after an update.

What you need before creating the server

• The exact client release: note the pack name, pack version, Minecraft version and loader shown on the Files tab.
• The author’s server package: use a file explicitly marked as a server or server pack. A client download may contain client-only mods and omit scripts or configuration needed to launch a dedicated server.
• A 64-bit Java runtime: general hosting guidance for 1.15.2-era packs commonly points to Java 8, but the pack’s own files were not verified for a definitive Java build. Check the release notes or server archive instructions first.
• Forge matching the pack: install the Forge build named by the selected pack release. The client and server must use the same Forge version, not merely the same Minecraft version.
• Storage and backups: reserve space for the server files, generated world, logs and backups. Keep backups outside the live server directory so a failed update does not destroy the only copy.
• A network path: for a home server, you need permission to bind the chosen server port and, for players outside your network, a router and firewall rule that forwards that port to the host machine. A rented panel or VPS may expose this through its control panel instead.

Choose self-hosting or a managed panel

Both approaches run the same pack; they differ in who operates Java, Forge, networking and updates.

Choose self-hosting when you need file-level control or already operate a suitable machine. Choose a panel when reducing installation and networking work is more important than controlling every Java and Forge detail. In either case, inspect the resulting files before inviting players.

Install the original HR: New Beginnings server (Minecraft 1.15.2)

Use this path only when your selected release is the original project and its Files tab identifies Minecraft 1.15.2.

1. Open the project’s Files tab. Filter for Minecraft 1.15.2 and select the desired pack release. If several server files exist, choose the one whose version corresponds to the client release you distributed.
2. Download the dedicated server archive. Do not rename a client archive and do not assume that a file called “2.0” is the same as the later server listing reported as 2.6.0. Treat the 2.6.0 date of February 15, 2021 as an identification clue only; confirm it on the live Files tab.
3. Read the archive instructions. Look for a README, install script or launch file naming the required Forge build and Java executable. Those pack-specific details take precedence over generic Java guidance.
4. Prepare a clean directory. Extract the server archive into a new folder dedicated to this world. Avoid mixing files from another New Beginnings release or from New Beginnings 2.
5. Install the exact Forge build. If the server archive includes a Forge installer or a prebuilt Forge server, use that supplied build. If you must install Forge separately, select the build identified by the pack release and install the server files into this directory.
6. Run the supplied launcher once. Start the server from the archive’s script or documented command. The first run normally creates configuration and EULA files; it may stop before a world is generated.
7. Accept the EULA. Open the generated EULA file, read the license, and change its acceptance setting only if you agree. Save the file without changing unrelated lines.
8. Set a fixed heap. Edit the launch script so the minimum and maximum heap values are equal, for example -Xms4G -Xmx4G if that amount is appropriate for your machine. The 4 GB value is an example of fixed sizing, not a verified requirement for this pack.
9. Start again and watch the console. Wait for the server to report that it has finished loading before connecting. The first world generation can take longer than later starts.

Install HR: New Beginnings 2 (Minecraft 1.16.5)

Use this procedure when the project page and selected file identify the sequel and Minecraft 1.16.5.

1. Select one release for everyone. The listing for New Beginnings 2 2.0.1 is dated August 17, 2021 and marked 1.16.5 with Forge. Check the Files tab for a newer or replacement release before using it.
2. Download that release’s server package. Keep the original archive so you can reproduce the installation or compare files after an update.
3. Check the required Forge build in the release materials. Do not substitute the Forge version from the original 1.15.2 pack. A matching Minecraft number alone is insufficient.
4. Install the server into an empty folder. A clean directory prevents old mods, configs and scripts from being loaded accidentally.
5. Use the documented Java runtime. Generic guides often recommend Java 8 for packs from this era, but the exact requirement for this release was not confirmed. If the server script or release notes specify another build, follow that instruction.
6. Complete the first launch and EULA step. Run the supplied launcher, accept the EULA in the generated file if you agree, then restart.
7. Set equal start and maximum memory values. Keep -Xms and -Xmx the same so the JVM does not repeatedly resize its heap during play.
8. Join only after the console finishes loading. Test with one client using the identical New Beginnings 2 release, Minecraft version and Forge build.

Java and Forge matching rules

Most failed modpack launches are version mismatches rather than a defective world. Treat the client and server as a four-part identity: pack name, pack release, Minecraft version and Forge build. All four should match.

• Pack mismatch: the original and sequel are separate projects despite the shared name.
• Minecraft mismatch: 1.15.2 and 1.16.5 are not interchangeable.
• Forge mismatch: install the exact build named by the selected release. “Forge for 1.15.2” is not precise enough if the client uses a different build.
• Java mismatch: a runtime can be installed but still be ignored if the launch script points to another executable. Check the script’s Java path and confirm the runtime reported in the startup log.

On a panel, an automated installer may select Java, memory and Forge for you. Verify the panel’s selected image and loader after installation; automation does not remove the need to match the client release.

How much RAM should you allocate?

No pack-specific RAM recommendation from the author was confirmed. Generic hosting guidance in the available summaries places many 20–40-mod packs at roughly 4 GB minimum and 6 GB recommended, with more memory needed as player count and view distance increase. Those figures are broad guidance, not a measured requirement for either New Beginnings project.

Whatever value you choose, make the minimum and maximum equal. For example, a launch script might contain -Xms6G -Xmx6G. Change the number to fit the host; do not copy an example blindly. Increasing RAM cannot repair a wrong Forge build, incompatible Java runtime, broken mod or overloaded CPU.

Networking a self-hosted server

1. Bind the server to the host machine. Start it locally and connect from the same machine using the address documented by your Minecraft setup. This isolates mod and Java problems from router problems.
2. Choose the listening port in the server configuration. Keep the port consistent with the value you expose in the operating-system firewall and router. Do not expose unnecessary services.
3. Allow the Java server through the host firewall. Create a rule for the Java executable or configured server port, limited to the required network profile where possible.
4. Forward the port on a home router. Send incoming traffic from the router’s external port to the host machine’s fixed local address. Reserve that local address so the rule does not break after a reboot.
5. Test from outside your home network. A player on the same LAN may connect even when internet forwarding is wrong. Test with a trusted player on another network before publishing the address.
6. Do not expose the administrative console. Use the server console locally or through a secured management method; never forward a remote desktop or shell service without authentication and updates.

Panel and VPS hosts usually provide a public address and a port in their dashboard. You still need to configure the server’s advertised address and firewall according to that host’s instructions.

Launch scripts, backups and updates

Use a repeatable launch script

Keep Java options, the Forge launch command and the working directory in one script rather than typing them manually each time. Record the selected pack version beside the script. This makes it easier to diagnose a later change and prevents accidentally starting an old copy.

Back up before changing anything

• Stop the server cleanly before copying the world.
• Back up the world directory, server configuration, mods, scripts and any custom datapacks.
• Store at least one copy outside the live server machine.
• Label each backup with the pack version and date.

Update as a controlled migration

1. Read the new release notes and identify its Minecraft and Forge versions.
2. Make a complete backup and test the update on a separate copy of the world.
3. Install the new server package in a new directory instead of overwriting the working server.
4. Compare configuration changes and copy only settings you intentionally need.
5. Have every player update to the same client release before reconnecting.
6. Keep the old directory until the new server has loaded the world and passed a join test.

Never assume that a file reported as “latest” in an old search result remains current. Check the live Files tab each time you plan an update.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server closes immediately

• Read the first error in the console rather than the final shutdown line.
• Confirm that the Java executable is 64-bit and is the version expected by the pack instructions.
• Check that the Forge server files are installed in the directory used by the launch script.
• Verify that -Xms and -Xmx do not request more memory than the machine can provide.
• Move the installation to a clean directory if files from another release were copied into it.

Players see a missing-mod or failed-handshake message

• Compare the pack release, Minecraft version and Forge build on the client and server character by character.
• Make sure players installed the client pack, while the host installed the dedicated server package.
• Remove manually added mods that are not part of the selected release, then retest.
• Do not let one player use the original 1.15.2 pack while the server runs New Beginnings 2 on 1.16.5.

Players cannot connect from the internet

• Test locally first; if local joining fails, fix the server before changing the router.
• Confirm the operating-system firewall rule and router forwarding target.
• Check that the host’s local address did not change.
• Verify that the panel or VPS has assigned the port you are advertising.
• Ask an external player to test; same-network testing can succeed through a local route even when public forwarding is broken.

The server lags or freezes during exploration

• Watch memory use and tick-delay messages while reproducing the problem.
• Ensure the heap has equal minimum and maximum values and that the host has unused memory for the operating system.
• Reduce simultaneous chunk generation and view distance before adding more RAM.
• Check CPU load, disk space and storage speed; a larger heap cannot fix a CPU or disk bottleneck.
• Test without recently added mods or configuration changes.

Pre-launch checklist

• All players have the same named New Beginnings project and release.
• The Minecraft version is 1.15.2 for the original pack or 1.16.5 for the listed New Beginnings 2 release.
• The server uses the exact Forge build required by that release.
• The Java runtime and launch script match the pack’s documented requirement.
• The dedicated server archive, not a client archive, was installed.
• The EULA file was accepted only after it was read and agreed to.
• -Xms and -Xmx are equal and leave memory for the host operating system.
• A local join test succeeds before internet troubleshooting begins.
• Firewall and router or panel networking expose only the configured game port.
• A labeled backup exists before the first world update or mod change.

What is and is not established about these releases

The available project listings identify the original pack with Minecraft 1.15.2 and the sequel with 1.16.5, and they identify Forge as the loader. They also show the dated server and pack files described above. They do not establish the exact Forge build, exact Java requirement, an author-confirmed RAM figure, or whether the reported 2.6.0 original server package is still newest. Those values must come from the current release’s Files tab, archive instructions or launch documentation. Treating generic Java 8 and 4–6 GB guidance as guaranteed requirements is a common cause of avoidable setup errors.
