To host Mustard Virus, run a Java Edition Minecraft 1.12.2 server with the Forge build and server files that match every player’s client. Install Forge in a clean folder, accept the EULA, copy the pack’s mods and config files (plus any supplied server world or overrides), then open Java’s server port 25565 for friends outside your home network. OptiFine is optional and client-side; it does not belong on the dedicated server.
What Mustard Virus is and what a server needs
Mustard Virus is a zombie-apocalypse modpack for Minecraft: Java Edition 1.12.2, built on Forge and distributed with both client and server support. Its premise changes normal survival: infected mobs are drawn to light, sound and players, and sunlight no longer stops them. The original listing warns, “The infected are relentless. They’re attracted to light, sound, and most of all – players. Sunlight no longer has any effect on them, and they’ll stop at nothing to get to you!” Expect a world that rewards careful lighting, quiet movement and coordinated base defenses rather than ordinary daytime safety.

The original CurseForge file is named Mustard Virus 2.1 (FOR NEW MAP ONLY) and is dated October 31, 2021. Treat that label literally: start a new world for that distribution unless its maintainer documents an upgrade path. Modrinth lists the project as Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge with client and server support. At a 2026 crawl, Modrinth showed 144.6K downloads and CurseForge showed 4,688,586; those counters change over time and are not performance or compatibility guarantees.
A working installation has three matching layers:
- Minecraft: every client and the server use Java Edition 1.12.2.
- Forge: the same 1.12.2 Forge build is installed on the server and every client.
- Pack files: mod jars, configuration, scripts and any required map or override files are from the same Mustard Virus release.
A mismatch in any layer can produce a rejected connection, a missing-mod screen, a startup crash or a world that behaves differently for different players.

Prepare before installing
Choose the release and protect your world
Download the exact Mustard Virus distribution you intend to run and keep the original archive in a separate backup location. For the 2.1 file marked “FOR NEW MAP ONLY,” create a new world. Before changing Forge, replacing a mod jar or editing configuration, stop the server and copy the entire world directory to another drive. A backup made while the server is still writing region files can be incomplete, so always use a clean shutdown first.
Use Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition
Mustard Virus is a Java Edition pack. Bedrock servers, Bedrock clients and Bedrock add-ons cannot load its Forge mods. Install the Java Edition launcher and make sure the launcher profile used by each player points to Minecraft 1.12.2.
Plan the network
Players on the same home network can initially connect through the host computer’s private address. Internet friends normally need two things: an operating-system firewall rule allowing the Java server process and a router port-forward that sends TCP traffic on port 25565 to the host computer’s private address. Your internet provider may use carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding; in that case, a managed host or a VPN-style private network is a practical alternative.
Select a compatible Forge 1.12.2 build
The official Forge download page listed build 14.23.5.2864 as the latest and 14.23.5.2859 as recommended at the time of the captured information. Those labels do not mean either build is automatically correct for Mustard Virus. Use the build required by the pack’s files and by the client profiles. If the launcher-created pack instance reports a different 1.12.2 build, install that same build on the server.

Install the Forge server
1. Create a clean server directory
Make a new folder dedicated to this server, such as mustard-virus-server. Do not install into a player’s client instance, an old vanilla server directory or a folder containing another Forge version. A clean directory makes it easier to identify generated files and to remove a bad installation without damaging a world.
2. Run the Forge installer in server mode
Place the Forge 1.12.2 installer JAR in the empty folder. From a terminal opened in that folder, run:

java -jar forge-1.12.2-<build>-installer.jar --installServerReplace <build> with the exact build number you selected. The graphical installer also has an “Install server” option; choose the empty server folder as its destination. Forge creates the libraries and launch files needed to start a dedicated server.
3. If installation cannot download the vanilla server
Some Forge installer runs fail while retrieving or verifying the vanilla server JAR. Retry in a new empty directory first. If the same dependency or checksum error persists, follow Forge’s installation guidance by installing the matching vanilla 1.12.2 server JAR in the directory before running the installer again. Do not substitute a server JAR from another Minecraft version.
4. Start once and accept the EULA
Run the generated Forge launch script or JAR once. The exact filename varies by Forge build, so use the files the installer created rather than copying a command from a different build. The first run generates eula.txt, libraries and configuration folders, then stops or refuses to continue. Open eula.txt, read Mojang’s terms and change eula=false to eula=true only if you accept them. Start the generated launcher again after saving the file.
5. Add Mustard Virus server files
Use the server-compatible files supplied with the Mustard Virus distribution. Copy the pack’s mods and config directories into the Forge server directory, merging only when you know which files belong to this release. Copy any supplied server world, scripts, data packs or override files as instructed by that distribution. Modpack formats use server overrides specifically to carry files that belong on a server; preserve their paths when extracting them.
Do not copy shader packs, resource-pack archives or other visual-only client additions into the dedicated server. If the distribution contains separate client and server folders, use the server folder rather than copying the complete client instance blindly.
6. Create a repeatable launch command
Use the Forge-generated script when one is provided, because it includes the libraries and arguments that build expects. If you write your own launcher, keep the Java executable, heap values and Forge entry point in a script so restarts are consistent. Leave enough memory for the operating system; the sources do not publish an authoritative RAM minimum or a guaranteed player capacity for Mustard Virus, so increase the heap only while watching actual console and operating-system usage.

Install the matching client instance
Import the pack
Players can import the pack with a launcher that supports Forge 1.12.2, including the Modrinth App, Prism Launcher, MultiMC or ATLauncher. A server administrator can also distribute the same pack archive and documented overrides directly. Modrinth documents server-oriented options such as Modrinth Servers, mrpack-install and the itzg/minecraft-server Docker image; whichever method you choose, verify the resulting files rather than assuming an import selected the correct Forge build.
Verify every player’s installation
- Open the instance’s version or profile settings and confirm Minecraft is 1.12.2.
- Confirm the Forge build number exactly matches the server’s build.
- Compare the
modsdirectory with the server’s required mod set. Remove extra gameplay mods from clients unless the server is also configured for them. - Copy the pack’s client configuration and resource files supplied for that release.
- Launch once offline to expose missing libraries or an early mod-loading error before attempting a network connection.
When a player joins, the server’s mod handshake is the final check. A client with a different jar, an extra required mod or an incompatible configuration can fail even when the game and Forge version appear correct.

OptiFine: optional for clients, not for the server
OptiFine is not a Mustard Virus server dependency. The pack documentation describes it as a manual client installation for shaders and resource-pack features. A separate Mustard Virus+ variant identifies OptiFine HD U G5 for that visual purpose. Install it only in a player’s 1.12.2 client when the chosen shader or resource pack requires it. Keep OptiFine and shader files out of the dedicated server’s mods directory unless the pack maintainer explicitly documents a server-side dependency.
If adding OptiFine causes a client crash, remove it temporarily and launch the unmodified pack. Check the first error in the Forge log, then test the exact OptiFine build against the player’s graphics drivers and other visual mods.
Start, test and expose the server
Test on the host computer
- Start the Forge server and wait until the console reports that it is ready for commands.
- In the host’s Minecraft client, connect to
localhostor the local address shown by the operating system. - Join the new world, verify that the expected Mustard Virus behavior and configuration are present, then use the server console’s stop command for a clean shutdown.
Testing locally separates mod and world problems from router problems. If the host cannot join locally, port forwarding will not fix the underlying installation.

Create an inbound rule for the Java runtime or for the server’s configured TCP port. On a home network, select the private-network profile when prompted and avoid exposing unrelated ports. A firewall prompt that was denied during the first launch can leave the server running while silently blocking friends.

Forward the normal Java port
Log in to the router, create a port-forward for TCP port 25565 (unless you deliberately changed server-port), and point it to the server computer’s fixed private address. Reserve that address in the router’s DHCP settings so the forward does not break after a reboot. Friends connect with your public IP address and port; they do not use the server’s private LAN address from outside your home.
Minecraft’s official server guidance warns that firewall and network configuration may be required. Do not test a public address from inside the same LAN if the router lacks NAT loopback; ask a friend outside the network or use a mobile connection. Never publish your public address more widely than necessary.
Operate the world safely
Backups and upgrades
Stop the server before backing up. Copy the world directory, the pack’s config directory and any scripts or custom settings. Keep dated backup generations so a corrupted save or incompatible update can be rolled back. Because Mustard Virus 2.1 is labeled for a new map, do not upgrade an established world to it without a separate copy and a tested recovery plan.
Read the console before changing settings
At startup, watch for missing dependencies, duplicate mod files, registry errors and out-of-memory messages. Treat the first reported mod-loading error as the useful clue; later stack traces are often consequences. Change one setting at a time, restart cleanly and record what changed so you can revert it.
Choose memory conservatively
No authoritative Mustard Virus RAM requirement or player-capacity benchmark is published. Heap needs vary with the number of loaded chunks, view distance, mod activity, world age and concurrent players. Start with a sensible heap for the machine, monitor garbage-collection pauses and operating-system memory pressure, and increase it only when logs and measurements show that memory is the bottleneck. Giving Java all available RAM can make the host less stable rather than faster.

“Missing mods” or a version-mismatch disconnect
- Confirm Minecraft 1.12.2 on both sides.
- Confirm the exact Forge build number, not merely “Forge 1.12.2.”
- Compare every mod JAR’s filename and version, removing client-only additions from the server.
- Re-import the same Mustard Virus release on the client and recopy its configuration.
The Forge installer fails
Delete the partial installation, use a new empty folder and rerun the official installer. Check that Java can write to the directory and that the computer can reach Forge’s download services. If vanilla-server retrieval or checksum errors continue, install the matching vanilla 1.12.2 server JAR first, then rerun the installer as described in Forge’s tutorial.

The server starts and immediately stops
Check that eula=true is present after you have accepted the EULA. Read the console from the first error upward for a missing library, duplicate mod, invalid configuration or out-of-memory condition. Remove only the file identified by the error, restore the last known-good backup and test again; do not delete the world as a first response.
Friends cannot connect, but the host can
- Verify the server is still running and listening on the intended port.
- Confirm the host firewall allows the Java process on the correct network profile.
- Check that the router forwards TCP 25565 to the server’s current private address.
- Have the friend use the current public address and the correct port.
- Check for carrier-grade NAT or a double-router setup if the forward appears correct but the port remains unreachable.
A client crashes during launch
Remove OptiFine, shaders and other visual additions, then launch the untouched pack. Inspect the Forge log for the first missing or incompatible mod and compare the client files with the server. Legacy 1.12.2 Forge installations can have specific Java-runtime expectations; the reviewed official pages do not establish one universal Java major-version rule, so test the runtime documented or proven compatible with your exact Forge build instead of assuming that the newest Java release is correct.
The world or map behaves incorrectly
Confirm that the release was intended for a new map and that its world-generation files were copied to the correct location. Stop the server, restore the pre-change backup and test the pack on a fresh world before risking the original save.
Self-hosting versus a managed host
Running the server at home gives you direct access to every mod, configuration file and world backup, but you are responsible for Java updates, firewall rules, router forwarding, uptime, power failures and recovery. A managed Minecraft host handles the machine and network layer through a control panel; you still need to select a Forge 1.12.2-compatible plan and upload the correct Mustard Virus files.
