To host a modded Minecraft Java server on AWS, run the server inside an Amazon EC2 virtual machine in a VPC, protect it with a security group, install the Java version and mod loader required by your pack, and administer the files, updates, backups and billing yourself. This gives you complete control, but it is closer to operating a small Linux server than renting a game-server slot.
A managed Minecraft host is easier when you want one-click modpack installation, built-in backups and support. The right choice depends on how much infrastructure work you want to do, whether your pack is supported, and whether variable AWS usage is cheaper than a predictable hosting plan.
What an AWS modded server actually is
AWS’s documented approach is an Amazon EC2 Minecraft server: a virtual machine attached to a VPC, with a security group controlling inbound traffic. The VM runs the operating system, Java, the official Minecraft server software, a loader such as Forge, Fabric or NeoForge, and the server-side files for your modpack.
AWS for Games describes EC2 as a way to avoid many of the networking and security problems of running a server at home. You still own the administration, however. You are responsible for hardening the instance, applying operating-system and Java updates, installing compatible mods, creating backups, watching performance, responding to crashes and paying for every AWS resource that remains active.

Before you launch: requirements and decisions
AWS and Minecraft accounts
Create an AWS account with billing alerts and a Minecraft Java Edition account for each player who needs to join. Java Edition is required for the Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and similar mod-loader workflow described here. Decide who will administer the AWS account and enable multi-factor authentication before creating resources.
The exact modpack combination
Write down the Minecraft version, loader name and loader version, Java requirement, modpack release and any server-side dependencies. A client and server must agree on the Minecraft version and loader; a pack built for one loader cannot be treated as interchangeable with a pack built for another. Keep a copy of the pack’s server files rather than assuming the client download contains everything the server needs.
Player count and workload
There is no authoritative RAM-per-player number that applies to every modded pack. World-generation distance, automation-heavy bases, entities, dimensions, redstone activity and the number of concurrent players can change the requirement dramatically. Start with an instance that has enough headroom for the pack, observe CPU, memory, garbage collection and tick performance during a realistic test, then resize if the workload demands it.
Choose an EC2 family and size for the pack rather than selecting the cheapest instance blindly. A small vanilla test may work on modest hardware while a large technology or exploration pack needs substantially more memory and sustained CPU. Storage capacity must cover the operating system, server files, logs, backups retained locally and world growth.
Connection and administration plan
Decide whether the server should have a stable public address, who may use SSH, how players will receive the address, and how you will perform maintenance when nobody is online. A security group can restrict SSH to your current administrator IP while leaving only the Minecraft port reachable by players.
Step-by-step: install the server on EC2
1. Select a VPC, subnet and EC2 instance
- Open the EC2 console and select a region close to the majority of players. Region affects latency, available instance types and price.
- Launch an instance in a VPC. A default VPC is sufficient for a first server if its subnet and routing are understood; a custom VPC is preferable when you already operate AWS networking or need stricter separation.
- Choose a current Linux distribution supported by the Java version required by your loader. Select an instance type with enough CPU and memory for the pack and expected player load.
- Attach encrypted persistent storage sized for the operating system, server files and world. Enable deletion protection for the volume only if you have a deliberate cleanup and recovery process.
- Select a key pair for SSH and record the region, instance ID and private key location. Store the private key securely and never place it in the server directory.
EC2 offers hundreds of instance types with different CPU and RAM combinations, so you can resize the virtual machine as your measured workload changes. A resize normally requires a stop and start; plan that interruption rather than changing capacity during a play session.
2. Configure the security group
Create a dedicated security group for the Minecraft instance. Inbound rules should expose only the ports you actually use:

Security groups are stateful, so return traffic for an allowed connection is handled automatically. Keep outbound rules as narrow as your update and backup design permits. If you change the Minecraft server port, change the server configuration and security-group rule together. Do not expose an administrative port simply because a tutorial used it as an example.
3. Connect and prepare a dedicated service account
- Connect over SSH with the distribution’s default user and the key pair created during launch.
- Apply operating-system updates and set the correct time zone and hostname.
- Create a non-root account such as
minecraft, create a directory such as/opt/minecraft, and give that account ownership of the server files. - Use
sudoonly for system administration. Run the Minecraft process as the dedicated account so a compromised server process does not automatically have root access.
Keep SSH keys and AWS credentials outside the Minecraft directory. If you need command-line AWS access for backups or automation, use an instance role with the smallest permissions necessary instead of storing long-lived access keys in plain text.
4. Install the Java runtime required by the pack
Java requirements vary by Minecraft and loader release. Check the loader and modpack documentation, then install that major Java version from your distribution’s supported packages. On a Debian- or Ubuntu-based image, the pattern is:

A loader that expects one major version can fail to start, load mods incorrectly or produce confusing class-version errors on another.
5. Install the official server and generate its files
- Download the official Minecraft Java server JAR for the exact Minecraft version you selected and place it in
/opt/minecraft. - Change ownership to the service account.
- Start it once from that directory to generate the initial configuration, world directory and logs.
- Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and seteula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Start the server again and stop it cleanly after the initial files are complete.

java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar server.jar noguiThe heap values in that example are settings, not a universal recommendation. Set them below the instance’s total memory so the operating system, Java overhead, file cache and monitoring tools retain headroom. For a large pack, measure before settling on final values.
6. Install Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or another compatible loader
Use the loader installer that matches the Minecraft version and the pack. Forge and NeoForge server installers commonly provide an --installServer mode; Fabric uses its server launcher and installer workflow. Follow the chosen loader’s current instructions rather than mixing files from different releases.

- Stop the vanilla server completely.
- Run the matching loader installer in the server directory.
- Accept any generated loader-specific EULA or configuration files.
- Start the loader once with the Java version required by the pack.
- Stop it after the expected directories, logs and scripts have been created.
Never combine a Forge mod with a Fabric-only server, or substitute a loader version because its number looks close. Loader, Minecraft and Java versions form one compatibility set.

7. Upload and configure the modpack
Install the server distribution supplied by the pack author when one exists. Otherwise transfer the server-compatible mods, config, defaultconfigs, scripts and other required files with SFTP or another secure transfer method. Preserve directory names and file case.
Remove client-only mods from the server when the pack documentation identifies them. Start the server and inspect the log for missing dependencies, duplicate mods, wrong Java versions and registry errors. Do not invite players until a clean startup has completed and a test client can join.
8. Set operators, world settings and restart behavior
- Use the server console or the
opcommand to grant operator rights only to trusted accounts. - Set difficulty, view distance, simulation distance, whitelist and other properties in
server.properties. - Enable a whitelist before sharing the address if the server is private.
- Use
save-allbefore planned maintenance and stop the process cleanly instead of terminating it abruptly. - Document the exact startup command, Java version, loader version and pack release in a file outside the world directory.
For automatic restarts, create a systemd service or an equivalent supervisor. A minimal service should run as the minecraft user, use /opt/minecraft as its working directory, restart after an unexpected exit and write logs that can be reviewed with the system journal.
Backups, updates and recovery
Use more than one copy
A world backup stored on the same disk as the live server is not a complete recovery plan. Keep scheduled copies outside the instance as well as a short local retention window for quick rollback. Before copying a live world, issue save-all and stop the server, or use a backup method that is explicitly safe for a running process.

Set a retention policy and test a restore on a separate location. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Update in a controlled order
- Record the current world, loader, Java and mod versions.
- Read the pack or loader release notes for migration instructions.
- Take a restorable backup.
- Test the update on a copy of the world when the pack is large or the change is major.
- Update the server files, start it, review logs and let a trusted player test the world before opening it to everyone.
Keep old loader and mod files until the new installation has passed its test. Some world changes are one-way; rolling back the files without restoring the matching world backup can corrupt a save.

Plan for a lost instance
Write down the region, instance type, storage identifiers, security-group ID, Java package, startup command and backup location. If the VM fails, you should be able to launch a replacement, attach or restore storage, reinstall the loader and point the service at the recovered world without guessing.
Control AWS cost with automatic inactivity shutdown
AWS’s cost guidance recommends automating shutdown during periods when nobody plays, using Systems Manager. A stopped EC2 instance no longer consumes the same running compute capacity, so stopping an idle server can materially reduce spend compared with leaving it online continuously.
Stopping is not the same as deleting. Persistent storage, backups, data transfer, and a public IPv4 address can still contribute to the bill, and the instance must be started again before players can connect. Build a schedule that matches your community’s hours, send a warning before shutdown, and exclude the instance from automation during a planned event.
- Give the instance an IAM role that allows the Systems Manager actions required by your automation.
- Install and verify the Systems Manager agent on the chosen operating system.
- Create a maintenance-window or scheduled automation that stops the instance after an inactivity period.
- Create a corresponding start schedule, or provide an authenticated way for an administrator to start it.
- Test both paths while monitoring the Minecraft process, world saves and player notifications.
Use the AWS Pricing Calculator for a current estimate. State the region, instance type, expected running hours, storage size, backup retention, data transfer and public-address assumptions. There is no honest universal monthly price for a modded AWS server because each of those variables changes the result.

Managed hosting trades some VM, network and filesystem control for a packaged control panel and provider-managed infrastructure. The main advantages are faster installation, simpler file management, routine backups and support when the server fails to start. Modrinth Hosting says customers can select an existing modpack or create one with integrated server installation. Its listed software choices include Vanilla, Fabric, Forge, Quilt and NeoForge, as well as Paper and Purpur. Availability still depends on whether the selected loader supports the Minecraft version you need. Confirm memory limits, backup behavior, region options, export tools and current terms before purchasing.

Beacon Hosting
Beacon advertises CurseForge and Modrinth pack installation, Forge, NeoForge and Fabric loaders, automated backups, SFTP, a web file manager, Java and Bedrock plans, and proxy support for Velocity, Waterfall and BungeeCord. Treat those as provider claims and verify the current plan limits, supported versions, restore process and commercial terms before committing a world to the service.
SudoSecurity
SudoSecurity advertises Forge, NeoForge and Fabric support, automated backups, SFTP and web file management. Its published pricing claim is $1.25 per gigabyte of RAM per month, with optional protection and technician support. That figure and feature set are snapshots of the provider’s own offer; recheck the current page, billing interval, minimum allocation, overage rules and supported modpack versions.

Compatibility checklist before inviting players
- The Minecraft version is identical on server and clients.
- The loader name and version match the pack’s requirement.
- The Java major version is supported by that Minecraft and loader release.
- Every required server-side mod and dependency is present, with client-only files excluded where appropriate.
- The server starts without fatal errors and generates the expected world and configuration directories.
- The security group exposes the configured gameplay port and restricts administration ports.
- A clean client can join, travel, interact with machines and load the dimensions used by the pack.
- A tested backup exists before the first public session.
Troubleshooting common failures
Players cannot connect
Confirm that the instance is running, the Minecraft process is listening on the configured port, the security group allows that TCP port, and the client is using the correct public address. If you changed server-port, update the connection instructions and security-group rule. Do not open every port as a diagnostic shortcut.
The server exits during startup
Read the first fatal error in the log rather than the final shutdown line. Wrong Java versions, mismatched loader files, missing dependencies, client-only mods and duplicate libraries are common causes. Return to the documented pack server files and verify each version as a set.
The world becomes laggy after adding a pack
Watch CPU, memory, garbage-collection messages, disk activity and server tick performance while reproducing the problem. Reduce simulation or view distance only after confirming the pack’s recommended settings, and resize the instance when measured CPU or memory pressure—not guesswork—shows that the VM is undersized. Remove or update the mod responsible only after taking a backup.
A scheduled stop loses the latest progress
Make the automation warn players, issue a save, wait for the server to finish writing, and then stop the instance. Check the service logs after the next start. If the workflow cannot prove that the process stopped cleanly, disable the schedule until it can.
A restore does not work
Verify that the backup contains the world, loader configuration, mod list and matching server properties. Restore to a separate test directory or instance first. Restoring only a world into a different mod set can create missing-block, registry or data-version errors.

Choose EC2 when
- You need operating-system, network and filesystem control.
- You are comfortable administering Linux, Java, loaders, backups and security groups.
- Your pack or proxy arrangement is unusual and managed catalogs do not support it.
- You can automate idle shutdown and accept variable regional AWS billing.
Choose managed hosting when
- You want a modpack installed from a catalog instead of assembling files manually.
- You value provider support, web file tools and routine backups over root-level control.
- You prefer a predictable plan and do not want to maintain a VM.
- The provider explicitly supports your Minecraft version, loader, pack and required player capacity.
For either route, compare the same evidence: loader and pack compatibility, memory limits, backup frequency and restore steps, support response, migration options, network protections and the total cost for your actual play schedule. EC2 is the flexible foundation; managed hosting is the simpler operating model.
