To host a modded Minecraft server in 2026, use Minecraft: Java Edition, choose one exact Minecraft version, match it with the modpack’s loader, install the Java runtime required by that pack and loader, run the loader’s dedicated-server installer, allocate memory according to the pack’s own guidance, and test locally before exposing the server to friends. You can run the server on your own computer or use a managed host, but either route still requires exact loader, version, and mod compatibility.
What you need before installing anything
A modded server is not interchangeable with a vanilla server. The server software, client installation, mods, configuration files, and saved world must agree on the Minecraft release and mod loader. A mismatch can prevent startup, disconnect players, or create a world that cannot be safely opened with another setup.
Use Java Edition
The official Minecraft server download is for Java Edition and requires Java. It does not provide a dedicated-server setup for Bedrock Edition. Every player joining this server should therefore be using the Java Edition client with the same modpack release, Minecraft version, and loader.
Identify the pack’s exact target
- Open the modpack’s current documentation or launcher entry.
- Record the Minecraft version, such as a specific 1.x release, rather than only the major series.
- Record the loader: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge.
- Find the pack maintainer’s server files or server-install instructions. A client modpack download is not automatically a complete dedicated-server package.
- Check whether the pack requires a particular Java runtime, startup argument, configuration step, or one-time generation process.
Do not combine a Fabric launcher with NeoForge files, install a Forge-only mod into a Fabric pack, or assume that a loader build for one Minecraft release works on another. Loader choice should follow the pack’s actual mod availability and instructions. NeoForge’s guide, for example, recommends Forge for the specific Minecraft 1.20.1 case because Forge had longer support for that release; that is a version-specific recommendation, not a permanent ranking of the projects.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the server folder, Java arguments, world files, logs, and mod configuration. It can be inexpensive if you already have a suitable computer, but you are responsible for updates, backups, uptime, firewall rules, and your home network. A managed service avoids much of that system administration, yet you must verify that it supports the exact loader and modpack rather than assuming that a subscription Minecraft server accepts arbitrary mods.
| Decision point | Self-hosted computer | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Files and configuration | Complete control over server files, Java arguments, mods, and world data | Control depends on the provider’s panel, file access, and policies |
| Setup effort | You install Java and the loader, configure the server, and maintain the operating system | The provider supplies the machine and management interface, but you still install or select a compatible pack |
| Home-network work | Remote friends may require firewall and router configuration | Usually avoids exposing your home network, subject to the provider’s network design |
| Mod and loader support | You can run the files that the host computer can support | Confirm support for the exact Minecraft version, loader, pack, and required server-side mods before paying |
| Backups and restores | You design and test your own backup process | Check whether backups are automatic, how often they run, how long they are retained, and whether restores cost extra |
| Capacity and latency | Limited by your computer, upload bandwidth, and location | Depends on the plan’s hardware, player limits, storage, and data-center location |
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription is required, although electricity and hardware have a cost | Requires a recurring subscription; current prices and capabilities vary by provider |
Choose self-hosting when you want full control and can leave a capable computer online. Choose managed hosting when avoiding router administration and maintenance is worth the recurring charge. In both cases, ask the provider or read its current documentation for the exact pack before moving a world.
Prepare the computer and Java
Do not size the server from client specifications
Minecraft’s July 21, 2026 Java Edition system-requirements article lists client targets of 1080p at 30 frames per second with 8 GB of system RAM when a discrete GPU is used, or 12 GB with integrated graphics. Its recommended client target is 1080p at 60 frames per second with 16 GB of system RAM. Those figures describe running the game client, not hosting a dedicated modded server, and they do not establish a minimum server CPU, memory allocation, or player capacity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
No universal RAM number applies to every modpack. The pack’s mod count, world-generation features, simulation distance, number of players, and Java version all affect the workload. Fabric’s official server page displays a launch example using -Xmx2G for the versions shown there. Treat 2 GB as that page’s example, not as a guarantee or recommendation for every modded server. Start with the pack maintainer’s documented value, leave memory for the operating system, and increase it only when logs and measured performance justify the change.
Install the Java runtime required by the pack
Minecraft’s official page says Java Edition needs compatible Java, and NeoForge states that users must install Java themselves. There is no single Java version established for every Minecraft release, loader, and modpack in 2026. Check the selected pack and loader documentation before installing or changing Java.

Forge documentation lists Java 21 as a prerequisite for its mod-development environment. That statement is not proof that every Forge dedicated server, or every Minecraft release supported by Forge, must use Java 21. Follow the runtime requirement attached to your exact server version.
- Install the required Java runtime for your pack and operating system.
- Open a terminal or command prompt and run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported version is the one your pack documentation specifies.
- If the command is missing or reports the wrong version, correct the Java installation or path before launching the server.
Keep the host’s CPU, storage, and network capacity in proportion to the pack. The official Minecraft server page does not publish dedicated-server CPU or RAM specifications, so do not treat a client specification as a server sizing promise.

Install the correct server files
NeoForge
Use NeoForge’s installer for the exact Minecraft and NeoForge versions selected by the pack. Its current server guide gives this installation pattern:
java -jar /path/to/neoforge-installer.jar --installServer
Run the command in a new, dedicated server directory. The installer creates the files needed for that NeoForge server. The guide also describes optional JVM argument edits in user_jvm_args.txt; change that file only when the pack documentation or your measured workload calls for it.

Do not use a NeoForge installer command to set up a Fabric or Forge pack. A loader’s installer, libraries, launch script, and configuration layout are specific to that loader.
Fabric
Fabric provides its own executable server launcher for the selected Minecraft and Fabric versions. Download the launcher associated with the pack’s versions, place it in the server directory, and use the launch syntax shown in Fabric’s official instructions. The page demonstrates a command of this form:
java -Xmx2G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui
The -Xmx2G value is the displayed example for that page, not a universal target. Replace it with the memory amount documented by your pack while leaving enough RAM for the operating system and other services. Keep the Fabric launcher and all Fabric mods on the same supported Minecraft release.
Forge
Forge’s requirements and installation details vary by Minecraft release. Use the current official Forge server-installation instructions for the precise Forge and Minecraft versions selected by your pack. The available Forge documentation distinguishes development prerequisites from a complete dedicated-server procedure, so do not infer a server command or Java requirement from a development page alone.
Complete the first launch
Once the loader files are installed, the server directory becomes the authoritative copy of the server. Work from that directory for every launch, update, backup, and configuration change.

- Run the loader-generated server command or script once. The first run may create libraries, configuration files, a world directory, and an end-user license file.
- Read the generated output and the pack’s instructions. If the server stops and asks for the Minecraft EULA to be accepted, open the generated EULA file, review the terms, and change its acceptance setting as instructed before launching again.
- Open the generated server properties file and set the values your group needs, such as the world name, difficulty, game mode, player limit, view distance, simulation distance, and whitelist behavior. Use the property names and accepted values generated by your server version.
- Install the pack’s server-side mods and configuration files exactly as its documentation specifies. Some client-only mods must not be copied to the server, while some content or performance mods are required on both sides.
- Set the Java memory arguments in the loader’s documented launch script or argument file. Do not allocate all host RAM to Java; the operating system, file cache, and other services need headroom.
- Launch the server again and wait until the console reports that it is ready for connections. Stop it with the server’s normal shutdown command rather than closing the terminal abruptly.
Never invite players before the first successful startup has generated a stable world and you have read the console for missing dependencies, incompatible mods, or Java errors.
Test locally before opening remote access
Testing on the host computer separates server problems from network problems. Minecraft Help describes localhost for a server running on the same computer. Connect with the Java client’s multiplayer screen using the host’s local address, then join with the same pack version and loader.
Host-computer test
- Start the server and wait for its ready message.
- Start the modded Java client with the identical Minecraft version, loader, and pack release.
- Choose Multiplayer, add a server, and enter
localhostas the address when the client and server run on the same computer. - Join, move around the world, open containers, and use several modded features. Watch the server console for errors while you test.
Local-network test
If another device is available on the same home network, connect it using the host computer’s local network address. This confirms that the operating-system firewall permits the connection before you change router settings. A successful local test does not prove that a friend on the internet can reach the server.
Make the server reachable by friends
Minecraft Help warns that home-network configuration may be involved when other people connect to a private server. NeoForge identifies 25565 as Minecraft’s default port and notes that the port may need to be opened in the system or network firewall. The exact steps differ by operating system, firewall, router, and internet provider.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Give the host computer a stable local address according to your router or operating-system documentation.
- Allow the server’s Java process or port 25565 through the host firewall. If you changed the server port, use that configured value instead.
- Configure the router’s port-forwarding rule to send the chosen TCP traffic to the host computer, following the router manufacturer’s instructions.
- Have a friend test the connection using your public address and port. Do not use your private local address for someone outside your network.
- If it fails, verify the server is running, the client and pack match, the firewall rule applies to the correct network profile, and the router forwards to the current host address.
Port forwarding exposes a service from your home network. Use a whitelist, strong account security, current loader and mod builds, and the smallest exposure your group needs. Do not assume every internet connection permits inbound forwarding; if your provider or router prevents it, a managed server or another network design may be necessary.

Keep the world maintainable
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, copy the world directory and relevant configuration files to storage outside the live server folder, and label the backup with the Minecraft, loader, and pack versions. Test that a backup can be opened or restored before relying on it. Keep at least one backup away from the host computer so a disk failure does not remove the live world and its only copy.
Update one layer at a time
When changing a pack, update according to its maintainer’s procedure rather than replacing files at random. Keep the Minecraft version, loader build, mod versions, and configuration set aligned. NeoForge’s guide describes updating by downloading and running the installer for the new version; that procedure is NeoForge-specific and should not be applied to Fabric or Forge automatically.
- Stop the server and make a dated backup.
- Read the pack’s change notes and identify required dependency or configuration changes.
- Install the new loader or pack files in a separate test directory when possible.
- Copy or migrate the world only after the new setup starts successfully.
- Check logs, join with a test client, and verify key modded blocks, items, dimensions, and permissions.
Monitor actual performance
Watch startup logs, tick-time warnings, memory use, storage space, and player-reported latency. If the server runs out of memory, first check for an incorrect Java runtime, duplicate or incompatible mods, and an allocation that leaves too little memory for the operating system. Increasing -Xmx is not a substitute for fixing a broken mod or an overloaded world.
Troubleshoot the failures people see most often
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Installer or launcher will not start | Java is missing, the wrong version, or not available on the command path | Run java -version, install the runtime required by the pack, and retry from the server directory |
| Client says the server has incompatible mods | Minecraft version, loader, mod build, or configuration differs between client and server | Compare both installations against the pack’s exact release and remove or replace the mismatched file |
| Server stops during startup | Missing dependency, client-only mod copied to the server, corrupt download, or unsupported Java runtime | Read the first meaningful error in the log, restore the last known-good backup, and follow the pack’s dependency list |
| You can join locally but friends cannot | Firewall, router forwarding, public address, or provider limitation | Retest the host firewall and port rule, confirm the router targets the current host address, and check whether inbound connections are supported |
| Everyone experiences lag | World generation, simulation distance, mod workload, CPU saturation, upload limits, or insufficient memory headroom | Reduce demanding server settings, measure CPU and memory use, limit simultaneous activity, and follow the pack’s performance guidance |
| The world will not load after an update | Incompatible loader or mod change, altered configuration, or an incomplete migration | Stop the server, restore the pre-update backup, and test the update in a separate copy before trying again |
How to choose a managed host for a modpack
A managed service can remove the most difficult home-network steps, but “Minecraft hosting” does not automatically mean “supports every modded server.” Before purchasing, confirm all of the following in current documentation or with support:
- The exact Minecraft release and loader required by your pack.
- Whether you can upload a complete server pack and edit individual mods and configuration files.
- Java runtime options and maximum memory allocation for your plan.
- Automatic backups, retention period, downloadable copies, and restore procedure.
- Storage limits, player limits, CPU allocation, and policies for large worlds.
- Server locations close to your players and the provider’s network quality.
- Whether changing packs or loader versions is supported without deleting the world.
- The full recurring price, renewal terms, setup fees, and any charges for extra storage or backups.
Minecraft Help mentions subscription-based personal servers as an alternative to configuring a private home network. That mention does not establish compatibility with arbitrary Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge packs. Treat compatibility, backups, and file access as questions to verify for the particular service and pack.
If you want a managed option to check against that list, Godlike.Host’s modded Minecraft hosting offers one-click modpacks from CurseForge, FTB, Technic, and ATLauncher on Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge. It also lets you upload a custom server pack and includes up to three free backups a day with restore. See the current plans, and confirm your exact pack and Minecraft version before you buy.
Quick Recap
A practical launch checklist
- Java Edition is selected on every client.
- The Minecraft version is recorded exactly.
- The loader and loader build match the pack’s instructions.
- The required Java runtime is installed and verified with
java -version. - The loader-specific server installer or launcher has been used.
