To host a modded Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 server, install Java SE 17 on the host, install the same 1.20.1 loader required by your modpack (Forge or Fabric), launch once to create eula.txt, set eula=true, allocate suitable memory with -Xms and -Xmx, and forward TCP port 25565 if players will connect from outside your home network.
Every player must use the matching Minecraft version, loader, and modpack release. A 1.20.1 client cannot reliably join a server running another Minecraft version, and Forge and Fabric mods are not interchangeable. The procedure below covers a clean server, packaged modpack servers, home hosting, and the failure modes that most often stop a 1.20.1 server from starting.
What you need before installing anything
Prepare the host computer and the modpack first. Installing a loader before checking the pack is the fastest way to create an incompatible server.

Back up any existing world before changing its loader, Minecraft version, or mod set. A world saved with one mod list can fail to load after blocks, items, dimensions, or entities are removed.

Choose Forge or Fabric from the modpack
The loader is a compatibility requirement, not a performance preference. Read the pack’s release page or included documentation and use the loader named there. A Forge pack needs a Forge 1.20.1 server; a Fabric pack needs a Fabric 1.20.1 server. Installing the other loader produces missing-mod or incompatible-loader errors even when the Minecraft version is correct.
Forge 1.20.1
Use the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.20.1 and select its server-installation option. Point it at an empty directory dedicated to this server. The installer places the libraries and launch files there. Many complete modpacks include a generated run.bat for Windows or run.sh for Linux and macOS; use that script instead of inventing a different command because it supplies the libraries and arguments expected by that pack.

Run the Fabric installer, open its Server tab, select Minecraft 1.20.1, and install into the server directory. Add the Fabric API version required by the pack to the server’s mods folder. Fabric itself is the loader; Fabric API is a separate dependency that many Fabric mods expect. A packaged server download may already contain both, in which case do not add a second copy.
Packaged server downloads
Some modpacks publish a server bundle rather than asking you to build a loader installation manually. Extract it into a new directory, read its included instructions, and run the supplied launcher. The bundle can contain a specific loader build, configuration files, scripts, and a curated mods folder; replacing those with files from a different release can break the pack.
Install and verify Java 17
Install a 64-bit Java SE 17 runtime or JDK on the machine that will actually run the server. The Minecraft 1.20.1 server requirement is Java SE 17. A launcher may use its own bundled Java for the game client, but that does not install or select Java for a standalone server process.
Check the runtime selected by the operating system
Open a terminal or command prompt in the server directory and run:

java -versionThe output should identify a 17.x release. If the command is not found, install Java and add its bin directory to the system PATH, or call the executable by its full path in the server script. If several Java versions are installed, check the version from the same account that will run the server; a different service account can have a different PATH.
Do not assume newer means compatible
Compatibility reports for Java 21 and Minecraft 1.20.1 are inconsistent, so follow the modpack’s own documentation if it explicitly names another version. Java 17 is the safe baseline for an unqualified 1.20.1 installation. A Forge community report described startup errors with JDK 22; if a pack fails immediately on a newer JDK, test it with Java 17 before changing mods or configuration.
Install the server and perform the first launch
- Create a dedicated directory. Use a short path with full read/write permission, such as a folder created specifically for the pack. Do not mix two packs or two Minecraft versions in one directory.
- Install the selected loader. Run the Forge installer with its server option, use the Fabric installer Server tab, or extract the pack’s server bundle.
- Place the pack files. Keep the generated libraries, loader files, configuration directories, and supplied launch script together. Copy the server-side
modsinto the directory’smodsfolder; do not copy a client-only launcher profile. - Launch once. Run
run.bator the supplied Unix script when the pack provides one. For a Fabric installation that uses the standard launcher, a typical command is:
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar noguiThe values in that example are only a starting point; choose memory after reading the sizing section below. A Forge installer commonly generates its own script and may require the libraries it installed, so use that generated script rather than substituting the Fabric command.
The first launch normally stops after creating configuration files, including eula.txt. This is expected. Open that file, change the line to:
eula=trueSave it and launch again. The server will not continue until the EULA is accepted. The Minecraft EULA permits installing the server software to host online play, while placing restrictions on distributing modified versions of the server software; mods are handled separately from the server binary. Read the current EULA for the terms that apply to your use.
Allocate RAM without starving the operating system
Java’s -Xms sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum heap. The Minecraft Wiki lists 1 GB as a minimum example for a basic server, while its setup tutorial recommends at least 2 GB for a small server. Mod-heavy packs, larger worlds, and more simultaneous players require additional memory, but there is no reliable RAM number based only on a mod count.

Do not assign all physical RAM to Java. The operating system, loader, native libraries, file cache, voice software, and monitoring tools also need memory. If the host has 8 GB total, assigning 8 GB to -Xmx can make the machine swap or kill the process. Increase the heap only when logs or monitoring show memory pressure.
Use a repeatable launch script
On Windows, place the command in the pack’s existing run.bat when that script is intended to be edited. A simple custom script can look like this:

pauseOn Linux or macOS, make a script executable with chmod +x start.sh and use:

exec java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar fabric-server-launch.jar noguiKeeping -Xms close to -Xmx, or setting them equal as in the example, avoids repeated heap resizing. It does not create extra memory; it reserves the chosen initial amount, so select a value the host can sustain.
Install mods on the correct side
Compare the server and client folders against the exact pack release. Every content mod that adds blocks, items, dimensions, entities, or gameplay logic normally belongs on the server and on every joining client. All players should use the same Minecraft 1.20.1 version, loader family, mod versions, and pack configuration.
Client-only mods
Rendering and interface mods such as Sodium are generally client-only and stay on each player’s machine. Do not copy a client-only mod to a dedicated server unless its documentation explicitly supports server use. A server log naming a client class or graphical library is a strong sign that the wrong file was copied.

Dependencies and duplicate files
Use the dependency versions declared by the pack. Fabric packs commonly require Fabric API. Remove duplicate copies of a mod, and do not mix Forge and Fabric builds that share a similar name. After each change, start the server and inspect the log before adding another file; changing several variables at once makes the offending mod difficult to identify.
Configure the world and server process
After the successful second launch, stop the server cleanly from its console with stop before editing files or shutting down the host. This flushes chunks and player data.
Server properties
The first successful run creates server.properties. Set only the options your group needs, then restart the server for changes that are read only at startup. Keep the default port of 25565 unless another service already uses it; if you change it, the router rule and the address players enter must use the same port.
Console and logs
Run without a graphical interface with the nogui argument on a headless machine. Keep the console visible during initial setup and retain logs/latest.log. For Forge, that file is the primary place to find the first meaningful error, including a missing dependency, wrong loader, or Java exception. A long stack trace is often a consequence; start with the first error and the named mod.

Open the server to players outside your home
Players on the same home network can test with the host’s private address. Internet players need a router rule that forwards TCP port 25565 to the host computer’s private IP address.
- Give the host a stable private address, either with a reserved DHCP lease on the router or a correctly configured static address.
- Allow the Java executable or server process through the host operating system’s firewall. Create a TCP rule for the port the server actually uses.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a TCP rule from external port 25565 to the host’s private IP and port 25565. Save the rule and restart the router only if its interface requires it.
- Start the server and wait until it reports that it is ready. Testing an unopened port while the process is stopped gives a misleading result.
- Have a player outside the home network connect using the public IP address and, when using the default, no explicit port. Do not test from inside the same network using the public address unless the router supports NAT loopback.
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT, which prevents inbound forwarding even when the router rule is correct. If an external test cannot reach the port, check the router’s WAN address against the address shown by an independent internet connection. A mismatch can indicate upstream NAT; contact the provider or use a host that supplies an externally reachable address.

Never publish router administration credentials, and restrict the forwarded rule to the one host that runs the server. Keep the server software and mods updated to compatible releases, and back up the world before accepting unfamiliar mod files.
Home hosting versus a rented managed server
Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, mods, backups, and operating-system settings. It avoids a recurring hosting bill but requires you to maintain Java, handle port forwarding, keep the machine powered on, and troubleshoot connectivity. A rented managed server removes much of the router and uptime work and may provide automated backups and a web console, but you trade away some low-level control and pay a recurring fee. In either case, you still must supply a loader and modpack combination that matches every client.

Troubleshoot a server that will not start
It stops immediately and creates eula.txt
Open the file in the server directory, confirm the line is exactly eula=true, save it as plain text, and launch again. If the file keeps reverting, check that the account running the server can write to the directory and that you edited the copy used by the launch script.
The log says an unsupported Java version or shows an early Java exception
Run java -version from the same script or terminal used to start the server. Point the script at Java 17 explicitly if another JDK is first on PATH. Do not troubleshoot a mod list with JDK 22 still selected when the failure began after that upgrade. If the pack documentation specifies a different supported version, follow that pack-specific instruction.
The server reports missing mods, wrong loader, or an incompatible version
Check all three identifiers: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge or Fabric, and the exact mod release. Remove a Fabric jar from a Forge directory or vice versa, install the required Fabric API for Fabric packs, and compare the server bundle with the pack’s client manifest. A client-only performance mod should not be used to satisfy a server dependency.
Players time out while the local player can join
Verify that the server is listening on the intended port, the operating-system firewall allows TCP traffic, and the router forwards to the host’s current private IP. Test from a genuinely external network. If the router WAN address is not publicly reachable, investigate carrier-grade NAT rather than repeatedly changing the Minecraft configuration.

Read the log and observe the host’s memory use. Increase -Xmx in measured steps only when physical RAM remains available, close unrelated applications, and remove unnecessary server-side mods. More RAM cannot repair a wrong loader, a broken dependency, or a world-generation conflict.
Forge takes too long to load or players cannot log in during heavy loading
Some secondary Forge guidance suggests adding -Dfml.readTimeout=120 and -Dfml.loginTimeout=120 before the -jar argument for packs with very long loading times. Treat this as a troubleshooting experiment rather than a universal fix: use it only when the pack’s documentation or logs indicate a timeout, and keep a copy of the original launch command.
Backups, updates, and routine operation
- Stop the server cleanly before copying the world or changing mods.
- Back up the world directory,
server.properties, configuration directories, themodsfolder, and the launch scripts. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine. - Record the Minecraft version, loader version, Java version, and modpack release in the backup name or a text file.
- Test an update on a copy of the world first. Never assume that a newer mod or loader can open an older save safely.
- After updating, start with the console visible, wait for the ready message, and have one player verify terrain, inventories, dimensions, and modded machines before inviting everyone back.
When the server is ready, give players the same pack export or manifest you used on the server. They should connect only after their client has the matching loader and mods; otherwise the server’s disconnect message usually reflects a real mismatch rather than a networking fault.
