To host Life in the Village 3 for Minecraft 1.18.2, download the Forge-based LITV3 serverpack from the modpack’s CurseForge Additional Files section, install Java 17, accept the EULA, configure the server files, assign at least 4,096 MB of memory, and start the supplied run.bat (Windows) or shell script (Linux/macOS). Every player must install the matching client modpack.
You can run the pack on your own computer or use a game-hosting panel with a one-click installer. Self-hosting gives you direct control over Java arguments and server.properties; a panel reduces setup work but costs monthly and may install an incorrect pack version unless you verify that it is the 1.18.2 Forge release.
What you need before installing
Life in the Village 3 is a modpack, not a standalone server executable. A normal client download is intended for playing from a launcher and is not the correct package for a dedicated server. The server must use the separate LITV3 serverpack built for Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge.
Use the serverpack, not the client zip
The file identified in the available instructions is LITV3-Serverpack-1.3, listed for Minecraft 1.18.2 with Forge and uploaded by dreams01 in October 2022. Release listings can change, so check the modpack’s current CurseForge files and select the newest serverpack that explicitly states 1.18.2 and Forge. Do not assume that the newest client profile or a similarly named archive contains the files needed to run a server.

Software and access requirements
- A computer or hosted instance with enough free memory for the server and the operating system.
- Java 17 installed in its default location unless you deliberately configure another path.
- Permission to create files, execute scripts, and edit text configuration files in the server directory.
- The same Life in the Village 3 client profile for every player who will join.
The exact current Forge build and current serverpack release were not established in the published setup summaries. Treat the version shown on the download entry as authoritative when you install.
Download and unpack the correct LITV3 files
Find the serverpack
- Open the Life in the Village 3 project page on CurseForge.
- Open the Additional Files section rather than downloading the ordinary client profile.
- Choose the LITV3 serverpack whose supported Minecraft version is 1.18.2 and whose loader is Forge. The documented example is
LITV3-Serverpack-1.3. - Save the archive to a short, dedicated folder that you control. A path such as
C:MinecraftLITV3-Serveris easier to troubleshoot than a deeply nested folder under several long names. - Extract every file while preserving the archive’s directory structure. Do not place only the launch script in a new empty folder.
Keep the server directory separate
Give the extracted files their own directory. This keeps world data, logs, configuration, and generated libraries together and prevents a client installation from accidentally overwriting server files. The startup scripts, eula.txt, server.properties, and user_jvm_args.txt should be edited in this server directory, not in your client profile.
Install and select Java 17
Install Java
- Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime or development kit using the installer for your operating system.
- Accept the installer’s default location unless you have a reason to place Java elsewhere.
- Close and reopen any command prompt or terminal that was open before installation so it can see the new Java installation.
Java 17 is the runtime recommended for this Life in the Village 3 1.18.2 setup. A different Java major version can cause the Forge launch process to fail even when the server files are correct.
Fix “Error occurred during initialization of VM”
If run.bat reports Error occurred during initialization of VM, the setup guidance recommends setting the full path to the Java executable in run.bat. Edit the script so it calls the Java 17 installation directly, using the complete path on your computer. Keep quotation marks around a path containing spaces, save the file, and run the script again. If the error remains, confirm that the path points to the Java executable inside the Java 17 installation rather than to a parent folder or an older Java version.

Complete the first-run configuration
Accept the Minecraft EULA
- Run the supplied startup script once. It may stop after creating initial files.
- Open
eula.txtin a plain-text editor. - Change
eula=falsetoeula=true. - Save the file without changing its name or extension.
The server will not continue starting until the EULA value is set to true. If the file is recreated or the value returns to false, repeat the edit and check that your editor did not save a second extension such as .txt.txt.
Review server.properties
Open server.properties and set the gameplay and access options you need before inviting players. The file is plain text with one setting per line. Make one change at a time, save it, and restart the server so you can identify which setting produced a problem. The available setup notes specifically call out server.properties as the place to adjust server configuration; they do not establish a universal set of values for every world or group.

The pack includes user_jvm_args.txt for custom Java Virtual Machine arguments. Put additional flags there instead of repeatedly editing generated launch files. Leave arguments you do not understand unchanged. A malformed flag can stop Java before Forge begins, while an allocation that is too high can leave the operating system without enough memory for the desktop and other services.
Allocate enough memory
Memory is the main resource decision for this pack. The Life in the Village 3 GitHub wiki recommends at least 4,096 MB, with 6,144–8,192 MB when available. Hosting guides give different tiers, reflecting different assumptions about player count and the rest of the machine rather than a single measured benchmark.

Choose a practical starting allocation
- Private testing or a very small group: start at 4,096 MB, then watch the console and player experience.
- Regular cooperative play: 6,144 MB is a more comfortable starting point when the host has sufficient physical memory.
- Public or busy multiplayer use: plan for 7,168 MB or more, provided the machine can reserve it without starving the operating system.
These figures are guidance, not survey statistics. No published performance survey was identified for this pack. Increase memory only when the host has it available; assigning nearly all physical memory to Java can make the whole machine unstable.
Start the server
Windows
- Open the server directory in File Explorer.
- Double-click
run.bat. - Keep the console window open while the server is running. It displays Forge loading messages, errors, and the point at which the server is ready.
- Stop the server using its normal console stop command before closing the window so world data can be written safely.
Linux or macOS
- Open a terminal in the extracted server directory.
- Run the supplied
.shstartup script. If the operating system refuses to execute it, grant execute permission using the operating system’s file-permission tools, then run the script again. - Leave the terminal session attached while testing, or use your normal process supervisor once the pack starts reliably.
- Stop the process cleanly from the console before shutting down the host.
Recognize a successful launch
A successful first launch creates or updates the world and configuration files and leaves the server process running instead of returning immediately to the command prompt. If the process exits, read the last several console lines before changing settings. The final error is usually more useful than earlier warnings emitted while Forge loads.

Install the matching modpack
Every player needs the Life in the Village 3 client modpack for Minecraft 1.18.2 through the CurseForge app or a launcher such as GDLauncher. The client and server must use matching modpack content. A player with a different Minecraft version, loader, or mod list can be rejected during login even when the server itself is running correctly.
Avoid long client paths
Place the client profile in a short folder path without spaces or excessively long names. The setup notes associate long paths with “Path is too long” errors. Moving the profile to a short directory before reinstalling or updating is usually simpler than trying to shorten every nested folder created by the launcher.

Distribute connection details securely
Give players the address and port that your self-hosted or panel-hosted service exposes, but do not publish administrative credentials or console access. If you change the server address, properties, or hosting provider, update the information shared with the group at the same time.
Use a one-click hosting panel
A panel can download files, create a server instance, and expose start/stop controls without requiring you to manage Java and scripts manually. The trade-off is recurring cost and less direct control over the underlying installation.

Verify a panel deployment
- Open the panel’s game-file, installer, or modpack selector.
- Search for Life in the Village 3 and inspect the displayed Minecraft and Forge versions.
- Install only when the entry identifies Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge, or when the provider lets you upload the documented 1.18.2 serverpack.
- After deployment, inspect the file list for
eula.txt,server.properties,user_jvm_args.txt, and the expected startup files. - Set the memory allocation in the panel, accept the EULA where required, start the server, and read the console for the first successful launch.
Understand the panel trade-off
Panels are useful when you want a managed interface, automated file deployment, and a host located away from your home connection. Self-hosting is preferable when you need direct control of Java 17, custom JVM arguments, the complete server directory, and every server.properties value. Neither approach removes the requirement to use the correct 1.18.2 serverpack.

Troubleshoot the common failures
The server starts with the wrong files
Symptom: the script is missing, Forge does not load, or the console behaves like a vanilla server. Cause: the client modpack or an incomplete extraction was used. Download the dedicated serverpack from Additional Files, extract the complete archive, and run the script from that directory.

Java cannot initialize the virtual machine
Symptom: the console prints “Error occurred during initialization of VM.” Cause: run.bat is finding an incompatible Java installation or an invalid path. Install Java 17 and edit run.bat to point to the full Java 17 executable path.
The server stops immediately because of the EULA
Symptom: startup ends after creating eula.txt. Open the file and change only the value from false to true, then save and restart.

Players receive a path-length error
Symptom: the launcher reports “Path is too long.” Move the client or server to a short folder path without spaces or long nested names, then retry the installation or launch.
Startup fails after changing JVM arguments
Symptom: Java exits before Forge loads after an edit to user_jvm_args.txt. Remove the newest custom argument or restore the previous working file, then add options one at a time. Keep memory allocation within the host’s available physical memory.
Players cannot join because versions differ
Symptom: the server runs, but a client is rejected during connection. Confirm that the server uses the 1.18.2 Forge serverpack and that the player’s launcher profile is the matching Life in the Village 3 release. Reinstalling the client profile is safer than copying individual mods between versions.
A panel installs an unexpected release
Symptom: a one-click deployment launches, but its files or Minecraft version do not match 1.18.2. Stop the instance, inspect the panel’s selected game file, and reinstall only after choosing the explicitly labeled 1.18.2 Forge entry. If the panel does not expose that version, upload or install the correct serverpack manually when the provider permits it.
Operate the server safely after it works
- Keep the serverpack and client profile on the same Minecraft and Forge release when updating.
- Back up the world and configuration files before replacing the pack or changing major settings.
- Record your memory allocation and any custom entries in
user_jvm_args.txtso you can restore a known-good setup. - Stop the server cleanly before moving files, rebooting the host, or changing Java.
- When a failure appears, change one variable at a time: Java path, memory, EULA, server properties, or modpack version.
The most reliable baseline is the documented 1.18.2 Forge serverpack, Java 17, an accepted EULA, a short folder path, and 4,096 MB or more of memory. Increase the allocation toward 6–8 GB when your available hardware and player load justify it, and verify every panel’s version before trusting an automated installation.
