To host a Killing Floor 2 dedicated server in 2026, install the separate dedicated-server files with SteamCMD (Steam app ID 232130), start the server once so it creates its configuration, then set the game, passwords and network rules. A private server can stay on your local network; a public server also needs the host firewall and router to pass the game and Steam query traffic. The current practical instructions come from community guides rather than a verified Tripwire manual, so treat exact paths and launch-class names as build-dependent.
What a dedicated server actually requires
The game client and the dedicated server are separate installations. Installing Killing Floor 2 through the normal Steam library does not, by itself, create a server that other players can join. SteamCMD downloads the server tool independently, using app ID 232130.

You can run the server on a Windows or Linux machine. SteamDB lists both operating systems for the dedicated-server app, and recent guides show different executable names, directories and INI files for each platform. Do not copy a Linux command, binary path or configuration filename into a Windows setup (or the reverse).

- Private or public: a password-protected server for friends is simpler; a public server requires router port forwarding and a reachable public address.
- Operating system: choose the platform on which you are comfortable handling services, firewall rules, updates and log files.
- Vanilla or modified: the standard Survival ruleset is limited to six players according to the contemporary 2hours.gg guide. Increasing
MaxPlayersalone does not create a larger vanilla lobby.
No independently verified 2026 hardware, upload-speed or memory requirement is established here. An older 2015 community guide mentioned 5–10 GB of free space and 5 Mb/s upload, but Steam now marks that guide removed and incompatible. Those figures should not be treated as current requirements.
Install the server files with SteamCMD
Linux installation
Install SteamCMD using your distribution’s supported package method, create a dedicated directory, and run SteamCMD with an explicit install path. The contemporary Linux procedure uses anonymous login and app 232130:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /path/to/kf2-server +app_update 232130 validate +quitReplace /path/to/kf2-server with a directory owned by the account that will run the server. Keeping the files outside a personal game-library directory makes backups and service management easier.
The command downloads or validates the dedicated-server files. “Anonymous” refers to SteamCMD authentication for this app; it does not make your game server anonymous on the internet.
Windows installation
Download SteamCMD for Windows, extract it to a short path such as C:steamcmd, and open Command Prompt in that directory. Use an explicit Windows installation directory:
steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:KF2Server +app_update 232130 validate +quitUse the executable and directory names supplied by the Windows server build you install. Windows guides commonly use a batch file to launch the server, while Linux guides use the server binary directly; the configuration filenames are not interchangeable.

Perform the first boot before editing anything
Do not create or edit INI files before the first successful start. The 2hours.gg guide dated 19 August 2026 states that the server regenerates its configuration files during first boot and can overwrite files placed there beforehand.
- Change to the server’s installation directory.
- Start it with a stock map and the default game mode for your build. Use the platform-specific executable or launch script supplied with the files.
- Wait until the log shows that initialization has completed and the process is listening.
- Stop the process cleanly rather than killing the terminal or power-cycling the machine.
- Only now locate and edit the generated INI files.
On the Linux layout documented by that guide, the relevant files are named LinuxServer-KFGame.ini and LinuxServer-KFWeb.ini. Older Windows instructions refer to different INI names and a batch file. Treat those names as examples for the documented build, not a promise that every update uses the same directory tree.
Configure the server
Identity and access
Set a descriptive server name so friends can identify it in the browser. For a private game, set a game password and share it only with the intended players. Set a separate, strong administrator password for administrative commands or Web Admin. Never use the same password for both purposes, and do not publish the administrator credential in a server listing, screenshot or support post.
Difficulty, length and player count
Configure the difficulty and game length in the game settings used by your installed build. The six-player limit is a ruleset limitation for vanilla Survival in the recent guide; a larger MaxPlayers value does not remove it. Do not advertise a larger vanilla Survival lobby unless a specific, compatible modification changes the rules and you have verified that modification separately.
Back up the generated INI files before making substantial changes. Keep a copy of the untouched first-boot configuration so you can compare it with a modified file when an update introduces a new setting.
Launch a map and game mode
The launch line combines a map with a game-mode class and can include difficulty and game-length parameters. The contemporary example uses KF-BioticsLab with Survival. A platform-appropriate template is:

<server-executable> KF-BioticsLab?Game=<survival-class>?Difficulty=<value>?GameLength=<value>Use the exact executable and class spelling present in your installed build. The guide discusses Survival, Weekly Survival, Versus Survival and Endless modes, but Unreal class names can differ by build or content package. Confirm the mode/class string in the server’s generated files or current build documentation before publishing a command copied from another version.
For a private server, keep the game password in the configuration rather than appending it to a command that may be visible in shell history or a process list. If you automate startup with a script or service, restrict that file’s permissions.

Local hosting and public hosting are different network tasks. A server can start successfully and be playable from the same machine while remaining unreachable from the internet.

These ports are the values listed by the 19 August 2026 2hours.gg setup guide. They are not a substitute for checking the configuration generated by your server build. An older Windows community guide listed UDP 20560 as well, while the removed 2015 guide listed an even broader set; neither should override the newer guidance without build-specific evidence.
Host firewall
- Create inbound rules for UDP 7777 and UDP 27015 on the machine running the server.
- If Web Admin is enabled, create a TCP 8080 rule only for the networks that need it. A narrow source range is safer than allowing every address.
- Permit the server executable, or the specific ports, on the correct Windows or Linux firewall profile.
- Keep outbound filtering and endpoint security in mind: a host firewall rule can still be blocked by a security product or upstream network policy.
Router and public address
For internet access, forward each required port from the router’s WAN interface to the host’s fixed private IP address. Reserve that private address with DHCP or configure a static address; otherwise a lease change can silently send traffic to the wrong machine. If your internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, a normal port-forward rule may not provide a reachable public server. In that case ask the provider about a public IPv4 address or use a managed hosting service.
Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot or a friend’s connection. Testing only from inside the same LAN can give a false positive because some routers do not support hairpin (NAT loopback) connections.

Use Web Admin carefully
Web Admin is optional. Enabling it adds TCP 8080 in the current guide, but it also creates another administrative surface. Change the default administrator password before exposing the interface, restrict the firewall rule to trusted source addresses where possible, and avoid forwarding Web Admin to the entire internet merely because players need the game ports.
If you do not need browser administration, leave Web Admin disabled and do not open TCP 8080. Manage the process locally or through a secured remote-management method instead.
Update without losing configuration
Use SteamCMD to update the downloaded app, but preserve your settings first:
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the game and Web Admin INI files, launch scripts and any custom content list to a dated backup directory.
- Run SteamCMD with the same installation directory and
app_update 232130. - Start the server and inspect the log for configuration errors before inviting players.
- Compare the updated generated files with your backup and reapply only settings that the new build still supports.
The recent Linux guide specifically cautions against repeating validate on later updates because it says validation can overwrite INI configuration. Use a plain update for routine maintenance unless you have a recovery plan and a verified reason to validate files. If an update resets settings, stop the process, restore the backed-up INIs, and check whether the new build changed section names or removed an option before restarting.
Workshop maps, modes and custom content
Workshop maps and custom content add another compatibility layer. The provider-published 21 September 2026 guidance discusses Workshop maps and multiple modes, but provider marketing statements are not independent proof that every map, mutator or mode works on every server build. Add one item at a time, confirm that the server and clients use matching content, and keep a known-good stock map available for troubleshooting.
When a custom map fails, first launch a stock map such as KF-BioticsLab. If the stock map works, inspect the custom-content download, map name and mode class rather than changing firewall rules that are already proven to pass traffic.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Managed game-server hosting is an alternative if you do not want to maintain an operating system, run SteamCMD, configure a router or troubleshoot public reachability. The provider runs the server process and usually supplies a control panel, but the exact features, prices and locations vary and must be checked for the plan and region you are considering.

A managed service removes much of the network and operating-system work, not the responsibility to choose secure passwords, compatible content and an appropriate player capacity.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The server starts, but no one can join
- Confirm that the process remains running after startup and that the log shows the intended map and mode.
- Check the host firewall for UDP 7777 and UDP 27015.
- Verify that the router forwards those ports to the host’s current private IP address.
- Test from outside the LAN and check for carrier-grade NAT or a double-router setup.
- Remove Web Admin from the diagnosis unless it is actually required; TCP 8080 is not the game-traffic port.
Settings disappear after an update
Stop the process, restore the dated INI backup, and inspect the new file for renamed or removed sections. Avoid routine validate operations after the initial installation because the current guide warns that they can overwrite configuration.
The server launches the wrong mode or map
Check the map name, game-mode class spelling and parameter separators in the launch script. Start with a stock map and the mode class generated or documented for the installed build before adding Workshop content.
Web Admin is unreachable
Confirm that Web Admin is enabled, that TCP 8080 is allowed on the host firewall, and that you are using the host’s correct address. Do not open the port broadly just to make a failed login work; fix the binding, firewall scope and credentials instead.
What is—and is not—established for 2026
The most current setup details used here come from the non-official 2hours.gg guide dated 19 August 2026: app ID 232130, anonymous SteamCMD installation, first-boot configuration generation, the listed ports and the six-player vanilla Survival limit. A 21 September 2026 provider guide also covers SteamCMD, Windows and Linux, Web Admin, Workshop maps and modes, but its hosting sales claims should not be treated as independent technical verification.
The 27 February 2024 Steam Community guide is useful as an older Windows reference, not as authority for current ports. Steam labels the 2015 early-access guide removed and incompatible, so its storage, upload and broad port claims are historical only. No current official Tripwire dedicated-server manual or authoritative 2026 hardware and bandwidth specification was verified. Plan conservatively, monitor the server after launch and document the exact build and settings you are running.
