Godlike.Host offers hosted Hytale servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
You can host a Hytale server on your own computer or rent a server. Hypixel Studios’ manual, updated October 12, 2026, lists x64 or arm64 hardware, Java 25, and at least 4 GB of memory as the baseline. For a working setup, download authentic server files, authenticate the server, allow UDP port 5520 through the firewall and router, then test from outside your home network. The UDP detail matters: Hytale uses QUIC over UDP, not TCP.
Choose where the server will run
A Hytale server needs a device that can stay online, enough CPU and memory for the actual workload, and a network path players can reach. You can use a computer you control at home, or rent a VPS or managed game server if you would rather not maintain a machine or your home network makes incoming connections difficult.

Self-host at home
Self-hosting can avoid a hosting subscription if you already have suitable hardware. You remain responsible for keeping the operating system and server software maintained, watching resource use, protecting the data with backups, and setting up firewall and router rules. A machine that sleeps, shuts down, or loses its internet connection will also take the server offline.
Use a VPS or managed server
A rented server can avoid configuring a home router and may be a better fit when your network uses a restrictive NAT. The trade-off is a recurring charge and less direct control over the underlying machine with some managed services. Before paying, check the provider’s current price and billing term, allocated CPU, RAM and storage, backup policy, support, cancellation terms, and whether it supports Hytale authentication and UDP/QUIC traffic. Hypixel Studios’ manual names Nitrado and Apex Hosting as development partners; that designation alone does not establish current plan prices, endorsement of a specific plan, or an available affiliate program.

Compare the practical trade-offs

Neither route guarantees capacity for a particular player count. Choose based on the workload you expect and the maintenance you are willing to do, then monitor the server in use.
Check the host requirements before installing
Hypixel Studios’ Hytale Server Manual states: “The Hytale server can run on any device with at least 4GB of memory and Java 25.” The stated supported architectures are x64 and arm64. Treat 4 GB as an official minimum, not a promise that every world, mod set, view distance, or number of players will run well on that amount.
- Architecture: x64 or arm64.
- Java: Java 25.
- Memory: at least 4 GB, with more potentially needed depending on view distance, mods, server logic, and player activity.
- Network: a stable connection and the ability to pass inbound UDP traffic to the server if players connect from outside the local network.
There is no universal dedicated-server RAM-per-player formula in the official figures cited here. Hypixel Studios advises operators to observe CPU and memory use under their intended workload. A small private server and a world with more players, mods, larger content packs, or complex server logic should not be assumed to have the same needs.
Interpret the published bandwidth figures carefully
Hytale Team’s December 1, 2025 hardware article publishes Exploration Mode network figures by view distance. The figures below are labelled worst-case guidance, and the article says normal play may use less. They are not a guaranteed bandwidth budget for a dedicated server.

Those numbers describe the article’s network guidance for Exploration Mode at each view distance. Do not read them as a server-capacity guarantee or a formula for how much upload bandwidth every host must provide.
Get the official server files
Use the Hytale Launcher or the official Downloader CLI to obtain the server and asset files. The manual recommends the Downloader CLI for production because it can download server and asset files, check versions, and select versions, making it easier to keep an installation updated. Use the official sources rather than an unverified mirror so the server files and assets come from Hytale’s distribution path.

- On the machine that will host the server, install or select Java 25 and confirm the device uses a supported x64 or arm64 architecture.
- Obtain the official Hytale Downloader CLI and use it to download the server files and assets. Follow the CLI’s available version-selection or version-check options when choosing a build.
- Keep the downloaded files together in a dedicated server directory. This makes it easier to distinguish server files from unrelated files and to back up the world data later.
The manual also documents a bootstrap route from HytaleServer.jar. In that route, start the JAR with --bootstrap, authenticate, run /update setup or /update download, then launch the generated launcher script. This is an alternative documented setup path; the CLI is the manual’s recommended choice for production.
Launcher route
The Hytale Launcher is another documented way to obtain files. Whichever official path you use, retain the server and asset files needed by the launch command, and keep the server’s version in step with the version your players use.
Start the server and authenticate it
With Java 25 available and the server JAR and asset archive in place, the manual’s basic launch example is:
java -XX:AOTCache=HytaleServer.aot -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets Assets.zipRun the command from the directory containing those files, or provide paths that resolve correctly from your working directory. The example refers to HytaleServer.aot and Assets.zip; if the asset file has a different name or location, adjust the argument to match the file you downloaded.
- Launch the server with the command or generated launcher script for your setup.
- After the first launch, enter
/auth login devicein the server console. - Complete the displayed device authorization flow at the official Hytale device page, using the account and instructions shown during login.
- Wait for the server to complete startup, then check its console for errors before inviting players.
The manual says authentication enables communication with Hytale service APIs and helps counter abuse. It also states a limit of 500 servers per Hytale game license. Authentication is not a substitute for opening the right network port or checking that clients and server use compatible protocol versions.
Open the correct port: UDP 5520
Hytale uses QUIC over UDP. The default bind address is 0.0.0.0:5520, so the default port is 5520. For players outside your home network to connect, allow inbound UDP traffic on that port in the host firewall and, when the server is behind a router, forward UDP 5520 to the server’s local address. A TCP-only rule will not solve this problem; the manual does not call for TCP forwarding.
- Find the server’s local network address. Reserve that address in your router’s DHCP settings if possible, so a later address change does not send the port forward to the wrong device.
- Allow UDP 5520 on the host firewall. Create an inbound rule for the Hytale server port using the firewall tool for the host operating system. Hypixel Studios’ manual includes examples for Windows Defender Firewall, iptables, and ufw; follow the example for your system and confirm the rule is for UDP.
- Forward UDP 5520 on the router. Set the external UDP port and destination port to 5520, targeting the server’s local IP address. Router menus differ, so look for port forwarding or virtual server settings rather than assuming a particular label.
- Test from another network. Have a player connect from outside your LAN, such as a separate internet connection. A test from the same home network may not show whether external forwarding works.
If you choose a different port, set it with the server’s --bind option and make the firewall and router rules match that port and UDP protocol. Make sure players use the connection details corresponding to the server’s configured bind.
When forwarding still does not work
The manual says QUIC handles NAT traversal well in most cases, but symmetric NAT can still cause problems. If you have confirmed the host firewall and UDP forwarding are correct and outside players still cannot reach the server, the issue may be the network path rather than the Hytale launch itself. A VPS or dedicated server is a practical alternative when the home router or NAT prevents reliable reachability. The manual also notes that players behind carrier-grade NAT should be able to connect as clients; that observation does not mean a server hosted behind carrier-grade NAT will necessarily accept inbound connections.

Set a sensible view distance and watch resource use
Hytale’s manual identifies view distance as the main driver of RAM use and recommends a maximum of 384 blocks, or 12 chunks, for performance and gameplay. Hytale Team’s hardware article explains why the setting matters: doubling view distance quadruples the surrounding world area. Larger view distances can therefore add a substantial workload rather than a small incremental cost.
Start at or below the recommended maximum, then observe CPU and memory under the player count and activities you expect. If you add mods, large content packs, more complex server logic, or a longer view distance, retest under those conditions. The official 4 GB minimum does not establish that a particular configuration will have adequate headroom.
- Check actual CPU and RAM use while players explore and perform the activities your server is intended to support.
- Reduce view distance if resource use or performance is unsatisfactory before assuming the server needs a completely different setup.
- Make one change at a time when diagnosing performance so that the effect of each adjustment is easier to identify.
- Reassess after adding content or changing the expected player experience; earlier observations may no longer represent the new workload.
Protect worlds, configure files, and keep versions aligned
Back up the data that matters
The server’s universe/ directory contains worlds and player saves. The manual documents automatic backup options, and generated launcher scripts include a 30-minute backup frequency in their default arguments. Check that backups are actually being created and that you know how to restore them. Where feasible, keep a backup outside the only copy of the server data: a backup on the same disk can be lost with the server files.
The manual also describes setting an explicit backup directory and frequency. Choose a destination with sufficient storage and a schedule that fits how often the world changes. A recent backup is useful only if it can be accessed when the server’s main data is damaged or lost.

Change settings with the startup behavior in mind
The server file structure includes configuration, permissions, and whitelist files, as well as the universe/ data. The manual says configuration files are read at startup and may be overwritten by in-game actions. Avoid assuming a manual edit will take effect immediately or remain unchanged while the server is running. Make configuration changes using the documented workflow, then restart when a setting requires startup-time loading.
Update server and client together
Hypixel Studios says clients and servers must match the exact protocol version; a mismatch rejects the connection. When a game update changes protocol, update the server and ensure players use the corresponding client version. If someone cannot join after an update, check version alignment before changing firewall rules: an unreachable port and a protocol mismatch are different problems.

The server will not start
- Confirm that Java 25 is installed and that the command invokes it.
- Check that the server JAR and the asset file named by
--assetsexist at the paths used by the command. - Review the console output for startup or authentication errors before changing network settings.
Players on the same network can join, but outside players cannot
- Verify that the host firewall allows inbound UDP on the configured port.
- Confirm the router forwards UDP, not just TCP, to the server’s current local IP address.
- Check whether a restrictive or symmetric NAT is blocking the path; consider hosting on a VPS or dedicated server if the home network cannot accept connections.
A player is rejected despite the server running
- Check that the server and client use the exact same protocol version.
- Confirm the server has completed the device authentication flow.
- If the server is reachable only by some players, investigate their network path separately from version or authentication issues.
Memory use or performance becomes a problem
- Check view distance first, since the official manual identifies it as the main RAM driver.
- Compare use under the actual workload, including mods, content packs, player activities, and server logic.
- Increase available resources or reduce workload if observation shows the current host is insufficient; do not infer player capacity from the 4 GB minimum.
Understand the operator responsibilities
The Hytale End-User License Agreement, version 2.3 effective January 13, 2026, applies to server software and hosting. Operators are responsible for the content on their servers, moderation, applicable laws, and applicable taxes or fees.
Servers included in official discovery or listing may have additional obligations, including an accurate content-maturity self-rating and any required discovery, parental-control, or age-gating features. Those requirements matter if you plan to seek discovery or listing visibility; do not assume a private server’s setup checklist covers them.

The fastest way: a hosted server
If you would rather not maintain hardware, manage backups, or configure home UDP forwarding, a managed host can take some of that operational work off your hands. A hosted server may simplify setup and provide conveniences such as backups and support. Check the provider’s current plans and verify resources, backup terms, support details, and setup expectations before choosing it.
Managed hosting does not remove the need to make choices about server settings, moderation, backups, updates, or EULA obligations. It changes who operates the underlying machine and can simplify setup; you should still understand where the world data is stored and how to restore it.
Conclusion: get the network and maintenance basics right
A reliable Hytale server starts with the official baseline—Java 25, supported x64 or arm64 hardware, and at least 4 GB of memory—then depends on authentic files, device authentication, UDP 5520 reachability, sensible view distance, backups, and exact client/server protocol alignment. If you prefer not to operate the machine and network yourself, compare current hosted-server plans and confirm their resources, terms, and support.

Four GB is the official minimum, but the manual does not give a universal RAM-per-player formula. View distance is the main RAM driver; mods, large content packs, complex server logic, and player activity can raise requirements. Monitor the actual workload rather than assuming a player capacity from the minimum.
Why can’t friends outside my home network connect?
