Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To host a horror modpack server, match the pack’s Minecraft edition, game version, mod loader, and Java runtime; install the author’s server distribution; accept the EULA; allocate appropriate memory; then test with a client using the identical pack. For Horror+, the supported dedicated server download is Horror+ Server, targeting Java Edition 1.20.1 on Fabric. It is a different file from the client modpack.
Start with the compatibility matrix
A modded server works only when its foundational versions agree. Before downloading anything, record these four values from the modpack’s project page or documentation:

- Minecraft edition: this guide concerns Java Edition. Bedrock add-ons and Java mods are not interchangeable.
- Minecraft version: for example, 1.20.1 or 1.19.2.
- Mod loader: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt.
- Required Java runtime: use the version specified by the pack and loader.
Loader files are not interchangeable. A Fabric server cannot load a Forge-only mod, and a 1.20.1 installation is not automatically compatible with a 1.19.2 pack. The Inside the Darkness project, for example, lists Forge support for both 1.20.1 and 1.19.2; that does not mean one server installation supports both versions at once.
| Example | Minecraft version | Loader | Server distribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horror+ Server | Java 1.20.1 | Fabric | Dedicated server pack from the project page |
| Inside the Darkness – Horror | 1.20.1 or 1.19.2, depending on the selected release | Forge | Use the server files documented for that release |
Choose the exact release first. Do not select a server because its name contains “horror” and assume the loader or version will fit your client.

Use a server pack when the author provides one
The safest distribution is a server-specific download prepared by the modpack author. It normally contains the correct mods, configuration, scripts, and dependency layout. Open the project’s instructions and look for a file labeled server pack, server files, or pre-configured server.
Horror+ server files
Horror+ Server is the dedicated server pack for Horror+. It targets Java Edition 1.20.1 with Fabric. The server project explicitly distinguishes it from the client pack; if you use Modrinth Hosting, its instructions require the Horror+ Server modpack rather than the client modpack.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Horror+ documentation describes three supported routes:
- Deploy a pre-configured server.
- Copy the server modpack into a Fabric server directory.
- Copy the pack’s
modsfolder into that directory.
Prefer the first option when available. If you use a server-modpack archive or a mods-only folder, follow the project’s instructions for configuration files and startup scripts as well. A mods folder without matching configuration can produce missing-content errors or a world that behaves differently from the intended pack.
Keep the server directory self-contained
Extract the distribution into a new, dedicated directory rather than mixing it with another world or an older loader installation. Keep the supplied mods, config, defaultconfigs, libraries, and startup files together. Avoid copying a client profile wholesale: client-only performance, shader, menu, and visual mods may crash a dedicated server.
Choose self-hosting or a managed host
Self-hosting costs no hosting fee, but your computer, network, and power must remain available. A managed host charges a recurring fee and handles much of the network and process administration. The right choice depends on whether you value maximum file access or the shortest setup.

When self-hosting is sensible
Use a home server when you already have an always-on PC, can reserve storage for the world, and can troubleshoot Java, firewall, and router settings. The Horror+ documentation warns that less than 16 GB of RAM in the host computer, a weak CPU, or poor connectivity can lead to lag or crashes. That is a warning about the entire host system, not a promise that assigning 16 GB to Minecraft alone will solve performance problems.
When managed hosting is easier
A managed service removes most port-forwarding and home-network work and can keep the process online while your personal computer is off. Modrinth Hosting supports integrated modpack installation and lists Fabric, Forge, Quilt, and NeoForge support. Select a plan that supports the pack’s loader and version, then install the server-specific pack rather than a client profile.
Size the computer and memory realistically
There is no universal player-count formula for horror modpacks. World generation, exploration distance, entity-heavy structures, automation, and the loader itself all affect tick time. Treat published memory numbers as starting guidance, then watch the server after players join and new chunks generate.
| Published guidance | What it means |
|---|---|
| Less than 16 GB host RAM may cause lag or crashes for Horror+ | Horror+’s project warning for a self-hosted computer; it is not a benchmark or guarantee. |
| 6 GB recommended minimum in Horror+ hosting instructions | A project recommendation for a hosted Horror+ server. |
| 4 GB, 6 GB, and 8 GB managed-host tiers | The listed Modrinth Hosting plan sizes; actual performance depends on the pack and workload. |
| 16 GB system RAM with 6–8 GB allocated | Inside the Darkness project guidance for the computer running the game/server. |
Leave memory for the operating system and other services. Allocating all physical RAM to Java can make the machine swap or become unresponsive. Start with the pack’s recommendation, leave headroom, and adjust only after checking logs and in-game responsiveness.

- CPU: Minecraft’s main server tick is sensitive to single-thread performance. A high core count does not compensate for a weak primary thread.
- Storage: Keep the world and server files on reliable local storage with enough free space for backups and generated chunks.
- Network: Upload speed, latency, and stability matter to every remote player. Wired Ethernet is preferable for a home host.
- Power and sleep: Disable sleep on a dedicated host and plan for safe restarts.
Install a self-hosted server step by step
1. Create a clean server directory
Make a folder used only for this installation, such as horror-server-1.20.1. Do not place it inside a client instance’s folder. Copy or extract the author-provided server archive into it, preserving its directory structure.
2. Install the required Java runtime
Install the Java version named by the modpack and loader. Confirm that the command your startup script invokes points to that installation. If multiple Java versions are present, an incorrect default can produce an immediate launch failure even when every mod file is correct.

3. Run the supplied startup file once
Use the included Windows batch file, shell script, or documented server command. The first launch normally creates files such as eula.txt, server.properties, logs, and a world directory before stopping because the EULA has not been accepted.
4. Accept the Minecraft EULA
Open eula.txt, read the license, and change the setting to eula=true only if you agree to it. Save the file, then launch again with the same startup method. Never download a second server jar simply because the first run stopped at the EULA step.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match5. Set a memory limit
Use the memory values recommended by the pack or host. A typical Java launch command uses the minimum and maximum heap flags, for example:
java -Xms4G -Xmx8G -jar server.jar nogui
Replace the jar name and values with those required by your distribution. If the author supplied a startup script, edit its memory variables instead of bypassing it; scripts may also set loader-specific arguments or library paths.
6. Start without changing content files
Let the server complete a clean startup and inspect the console for loader errors, missing dependencies, or registry mismatches. Stop it using the console’s normal shutdown command so the world saves correctly. Do not delete configuration files to silence an error until you have identified which mod requires them.
7. Configure basic server settings
Edit server.properties for the desired difficulty, view distance, and port. Keep the default port unless another service already uses it. Enable a whitelist for a private group, then add players from the server console with the documented whitelist command. Keep operator privileges limited to people who administer the world.

Configure access for friends
Local-network testing
Join from another computer on the same home network first. Use the host computer’s local address and the configured port. This test separates modpack problems from router and internet problems.
Internet access from home
- Give the server computer a reserved local address through your router’s DHCP settings.
- Allow Java or the server executable through the host firewall on the private network.
- Forward the Minecraft port from the router to the reserved local address only when outside players need access.
- Share the public address privately with trusted players; do not post it publicly.
- Keep the whitelist enabled and remove players who no longer need access.
Router menus differ by manufacturer, and some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT that prevents ordinary port forwarding. If external players cannot connect while local play works, test the firewall, port forwarding, public address, and provider restrictions separately. A managed host avoids most of this home-network configuration.
Backups before exposure
Stop the server before copying a world. Keep at least one backup outside the live server directory and make additional backups before installing world-generation or content-changing mods. A backup made while files are being written can be incomplete, so use the server’s normal shutdown process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake the client and server match
Every player should install the same Minecraft version, loader, and modpack release as the server. A client pack is not automatically a server pack, and a server pack is not necessarily suitable for launching the game window.
- Install the exact Java Edition version listed by the server.
- Install the exact loader family and release required by the pack.
- Import the client modpack release that corresponds to the server release.
- Launch once and confirm the title screen shows the expected loader and version.
- Connect locally before inviting remote players.
Some individual mods are explicitly server-side. For example, the Server-Side Horror project states that players do not need to install anything for that mod. That statement applies to that mod’s documented behavior, not to an entire horror modpack. Assume a pack requires matching client files unless its author says otherwise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test in a controlled order
Test one client first
Join with one account, walk a short distance, open inventories, and watch the console while chunks generate. Check that custom items, structures, sounds, and configuration-dependent features load correctly.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Add a second external player
After local testing succeeds, have one friend connect from outside the home network. Compare latency and tick responsiveness while both players explore. This exposes upload, firewall, and router issues that a local test cannot reveal.
Record a known-good state
Once the server works, save a copy of the configuration, mod list, loader version, Java version, and startup script. This gives you a reference point when a later update introduces a mismatch.
Troubleshoot the failures that appear most often
“Incompatible mod set” or missing-mod errors
- Compare the client and server mod lists by filename and version.
- Confirm both sides use the same loader and Minecraft version.
- Check whether a dependency belongs in the server pack but was omitted during a manual copy.
- Remove client-only files from the server only when the pack documentation identifies them as client-only.
Registry or datapack mismatch
These errors often occur after changing content mods on an existing world. Stop the server, restore the previous mod list or a pre-change backup, and follow the pack author’s update instructions. Do not continue generating important areas until the installation is stable.
Crashes during startup
- Read the first meaningful error and the named mod, rather than the final cascade of shutdown messages.
- Verify the Java runtime and loader version.
- Check that the server has enough free disk space and that its memory limit does not exceed available RAM.
- Re-extract a clean copy of the official server distribution if files were edited or mixed with another pack.
Lag, rubber-banding, or slow chunk generation
Measure the problem while one player is idle and while several players explore. Reduce view or simulation distance if the pack allows it, stop unnecessary background programs, and check CPU, memory, and network use. More RAM cannot fix a saturated upload connection or a CPU-bound server tick.
Friends cannot connect
If local connections work, verify the public address, router forwarding target, firewall rule, and whether the ISP blocks inbound connections. If no local client can join, return to the loader, version, server process, and local firewall checks before changing router settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Updating the modpack without losing the world
- Read the release notes for loader, Java, dependency, and world-generation changes.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Make a dated backup of the world and the complete server directory.
- Install the new server distribution in a separate directory when possible.
- Move only the files the pack author tells you to preserve, such as the world, whitelist, or server settings.
- Start the updated server and test with one client before allowing the whole group back in.
Keep the old installation until the new one has survived a backup and a complete client test. World-generation changes deserve extra caution because newly generated chunks can make a rollback complicated.
Decision checklist
- Have you written down the exact Minecraft version and loader?
- Are you using the author’s server pack rather than copying a client profile?
- Does the Java runtime match the pack’s requirement?
- Have you accepted the EULA and set a memory limit with room left for the operating system?
- Is the world backed up outside the live directory?
- Can one local client join with the matching pack?
- Can one external player join after firewall and router testing?
- Is a whitelist enabled for a private server?
- Do you have a recovery copy before installing updates or world-generation mods?
Practical recommendation
For a technically comfortable owner with an always-on computer, self-host the author-provided server pack, reserve a local address, and test locally before forwarding a port. For a group that wants the server online without maintaining a home network, use a managed host with the exact loader and version support; install the server-specific modpack and select at least the project’s stated memory recommendation. In either case, compatibility and backups matter more than the horror theme: a correctly matched, modest server is more reliable than a larger machine running the wrong loader or client files.
