To host a Homestead server, download the official server pack from CozyStudios, keep the server and every client on Minecraft 1.20.1 with the same Homestead version and loader, and allocate roughly 6–8 GB of RAM for a small group. You can run it on your own computer at no software cost, or rent a Minecraft host that offers a one-click Homestead installation. Self-hosting requires the computer to stay on and usually requires router port forwarding; renting costs money but removes most of the networking work.
What you need before starting
Prepare these items before extracting any files:
- A legal Minecraft Java Edition installation for every player.
- The exact Homestead pack version you intend to run.
- A computer or rented server with enough memory and a reasonably strong CPU.
- Permission to install software and, for self-hosting, access to your router’s administration page.
- A way to keep the server files separate from your normal Minecraft client files.
Homestead targets Minecraft 1.20.1 in the available pack listings. The client and server must use the same Minecraft version and the same Homestead pack version. A client on a newer or older release will normally fail to connect, reject the server’s registry data, or load a different set of mods.

Use the CozyStudios distribution
The official Homestead server pack is distributed from the CozyStudios website rather than CurseForge. The package described by CozyStudios includes the mod files, a preconfigured server.properties, startup scripts for Windows, macOS and Linux, and a HOW-TO-RUN.md file. Use those supplied files instead of assembling a server by copying mods from a client installation.
- Open the Homestead download supplied by CozyStudios.
- Choose the server-pack download that matches the Homestead version your friends will install.
- Save the archive somewhere you can identify later; do not place it inside your regular client’s
.minecraftdirectory. - Create a dedicated folder such as
Homestead-Serverand extract the archive into it. - Read the included
HOW-TO-RUN.mdbefore launching anything. It is the pack-specific authority for the included scripts and settings.
If a download page offers several Minecraft versions, select 1.20.1 only when that is the version named by the Homestead release you are installing. Do not download a generic Fabric or Forge server JAR first and hope it will discover the right mods; the pack’s own loader and files must be used.

Resolve the loader before you launch
Dedicated Minecraft and MinecraftHub identify the pack as Fabric, while ModReady identifies it as Forge. Because choosing the wrong loader makes the server fail during startup, verify the loader on the current CozyStudios listing or the current Modrinth listing for the exact release you downloaded.
- Check the loader label beside the Homestead version.
- Check the server archive for loader-specific files and instructions.
- Install that same loader on every player’s client through the pack’s normal installation method.
- Do not combine Fabric and Forge versions of a mod or server in one installation.
The loader conflict cannot be resolved without checking the official listing and the files in the release you downloaded. Treat those as authoritative, and recheck them if a later Homestead update changes loader support.

Choose self-hosting or a rented server
Both approaches run the same server pack. The difference is who supplies the always-on machine and who handles networking.

Self-hosting is a good fit for a small group that plays at predictable times and has someone comfortable with router settings. Renting is more practical when the server must be available while the owner’s PC is off, when players are in different time zones, or when nobody wants to troubleshoot inbound connections.
How much RAM does Homestead need?
There is no single published requirement. WiseHosting, ModReady and other 2026 guides give overlapping but different recommendations, so use them as a starting range and leave memory for the operating system.

For a first launch with a few friends, 6 GB is a sensible starting allocation; move toward 8 GB if the group is larger or the server reports memory pressure. WiseHosting also says that CozyStudios documentation recommends 8–12 GB, but CozyStudios’ page does not confirm that statement, so do not treat it as an official requirement.

On Windows, WiseHosting estimates that the operating system commonly consumes 4–6 GB by itself. A computer with 8 GB total RAM therefore cannot safely dedicate all of its memory to the server. Keep several gigabytes available for Windows, background services and the Java process. Giving Java more memory than the machine can provide causes swapping and can make the server slower rather than faster.
Self-host Homestead on Windows, macOS or Linux
1. Install the Java version required by the release
Read the pack’s current HOW-TO-RUN.md and release listing for the Java requirement before installing Java. A Java 17 requirement appears in one summary, but the official pack page does not confirm it. Use the version named by the release you are actually running rather than assuming that every future Homestead build uses the same Java version.
2. Extract and inspect the server folder
Keep the extracted files in a permanent folder. You should see the supplied startup scripts, the mod files, the properties preset and the documentation. Do not rename loader files or remove mods to “make the first launch easier”; dependency checks rely on the pack’s complete file set.
3. Set the memory variables
The WiseHosting example for the pack’s variables.txt is:
JAVA_ARGS="-Xmx8G -Xms4G"Here, -Xmx8G permits Java to use up to 8 GB and -Xms4G starts the process with 4 GB. Adjust both values to fit your machine and player count. A small group can begin around the 6–8 GB range described above; never allocate the entire physical memory of a desktop or laptop.
4. Run the supplied startup script
- On Windows, run the Windows script included by CozyStudios.
- On macOS or Linux, use the script for that operating system, following the permissions instructions in
HOW-TO-RUN.md. - Allow the first launch to create its files and generate any required agreement prompt.
- Stop the process cleanly, open the generated files, and accept the Minecraft server EULA only if you agree to its terms.
- Start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading before attempting to connect.
Use the included script rather than guessing a JAR filename or writing a replacement command. Pack authors may pass loader-specific arguments, memory flags or compatibility options that a hand-written command would omit.

5. Configure the basic server properties
The server pack supplies a preset server.properties. Review it before inviting anyone:
- Set a recognizable server name or message.
- Confirm the world and gameplay settings you want before the world is generated.
- Keep authentication enabled unless you understand the security consequences of disabling it.
- Use an allowlist if the server should be limited to your group.
- Leave the listening port at the pack’s configured value unless you have a specific reason to change it; if you change it, friends must use the matching port.
Make changes while the server is stopped. A running process can overwrite settings when it shuts down.
Make a self-hosted server reachable
Local-network test
First connect from a computer on the same home network. This separates a Minecraft or mod problem from an Internet-routing problem. Use the host computer’s local network address and the port shown in server.properties. If the local test fails, check the server console, loader, version and firewall before changing the router.
Firewall permission
When the operating system asks whether Java or the server may communicate, allow it on the private network profile you actually use. Do not broadly expose unrelated applications or enable public-network access without understanding the risk. If the server starts but local players cannot connect, create a narrowly scoped inbound rule for the server’s Java process or configured port.
Router port forwarding
- Give the host computer a stable local address, preferably through the router’s DHCP reservation feature.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the Minecraft server port shown in
server.propertiesto that local address. - Choose the protocol required by the server and router interface; if the interface offers TCP/UDP together, use the setting recommended by the server documentation.
- Save the rule and restart the server if necessary.
- Have a friend outside your home network test the connection using your public address and the configured port.
Port forwarding exposes a service from your home network. A misconfigured rule can expose more than intended, and your public address may change. Forward only the Minecraft port, keep the server and operating system updated, use an allowlist for a private group, and remove the rule when you no longer run the server. If your Internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary forwarding may not work; renting a host is then the simpler option.
Install Homestead on a rented host
Panel labels vary, but the documented one-click path is Modpacks > Modrinth filter > search Homestead > Install. Select the exact Homestead release and Minecraft version your players will use. If the panel asks for a loader, choose the one confirmed on the current CozyStudios or Modrinth listing; do not rely on conflicting summaries.

- Create the server with enough RAM for your expected group, using the table above as a starting point.
- Open the host’s modpack installer and filter to Modrinth if that option is available.
- Search for Homestead and verify the author, Minecraft 1.20.1 target and release number.
- Install the pack, then open the file manager or configuration panel.
- Check the generated memory setting, server properties and allowlist.
- Start the server and wait for a completed startup message.
- Give players the host-provided address and require them to install the identical client pack.
A one-click installation does not eliminate version discipline. Hosts can list similarly named packs or older releases, and an automatic update can move the server ahead of your clients. Disable automatic pack updates when the panel permits it, or coordinate every update with the group.
Install the matching client pack
Every player should install the same Homestead release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and loader that the server uses. The easiest way to diagnose a failed connection is to compare these three values on the client and server before changing network settings.
- Do not add client-only mods to the server folder.
- Do not remove a server-required mod because the client appears to launch without it.
- Keep optional visual or performance mods separate from the core Homestead files.
- After an update, have everyone close the game, update once, and relaunch rather than mixing old and new files.
Backups, updates and routine operation
Back up before changing the pack
Stop the server and copy the complete world folder to a different disk or storage location before updating Homestead, changing the loader or installing additional mods. A world backup is more useful than a copy of only the configuration files because terrain, player inventories and progression live in the world data.
Shut down cleanly
Use the server console’s normal stop command or the stop control in the hosting panel. Closing the terminal or powering off the computer can leave region data and player changes unsaved.

Update as a coordinated change
- Read the release notes and confirm whether the Minecraft version or loader changed.
- Back up the world and server folder.
- Install the new server pack in a separate directory when possible.
- Move only deliberate settings and backups; do not blindly overwrite new pack files with an old directory.
- Update every client to the identical release.
- Start the server and watch the console for missing dependencies or registry errors before allowing players in.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server stops during startup
Check the loader first. A Fabric/Forge mismatch is especially likely because Dedicated Minecraft and MinecraftHub identify Homestead’s loader as Fabric, while ModReady identifies it as Forge. Then verify Minecraft 1.20.1, the exact pack release and the Java version named by the release. Read the first error in the console rather than the final shutdown line; the final line usually reports the consequence, not the cause.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
Compare the client and server pack versions, loader and Minecraft version character by character. Reinstalling the same official client pack is safer than manually copying individual mods. Remove stale versions from the client’s instance before installing the current release.

The server runs out of memory or becomes sluggish
Check the Java maximum in JAVA_ARGS or the host panel and compare it with the RAM table. Increase memory only when the physical machine has headroom. On Windows, reserve 4–6 GB for the operating system as WiseHosting advises. If the computer starts swapping, reduce other workloads or move the server to a machine with more RAM and a better CPU.
Local players can connect, but friends cannot
The pack is probably running, so inspect the network path: confirm the host’s local address has not changed, verify the router rule points to that address, check the operating-system firewall and confirm that the friend is using the current public address and port. Carrier-grade NAT or a changing public address can prevent ordinary forwarding; a rented host avoids those home-network constraints.

The server works only while the owner is present
That is expected for self-hosting. The computer must remain powered on, connected to the Internet and running the server process. Configure sleep settings so the machine does not suspend during play, or choose a rented server for independent uptime.
Recommended starting setup
For two to four friends, use the official CozyStudios server pack for the chosen Homestead release, Minecraft 1.20.1, the loader confirmed by the current listing, and 6 GB of allocated RAM if the host computer has additional memory for its operating system. Test locally, then configure a single router forward only if outside players need access. For five to ten players, begin closer to 8 GB and monitor performance. Groups of ten or more should plan for at least 8–10 GB according to ModReady’s 2026 ranges, with Dedicated Minecraft listing 10–12 GB for that scale; a stronger CPU and a rented always-on machine may be more practical than a home desktop.
When the official loader information, your client pack and the server files all agree, most connection problems become ordinary network or memory issues rather than mysterious modpack failures.
