The practical way to host Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 is to install its Minecraft 1.7.10 pack through a managed server provider that lists it as a one-click option. That route avoids assembling an old modded server by hand. Self-hosting is also possible, but you need the pack’s 1.7.10 server files, a compatible Java installation (normally Java 8 for this generation of modpacks), enough memory, and network configuration for anyone joining from outside your home.

Start with 4 GB of allocated memory for a small private group, then increase it if the server’s logs show memory pressure or several players explore simultaneously. Hosting companies publish recommendations from roughly 2 GB to 7 GB, but none of those figures is an official Mojang or Hermitcraft requirement. The pack is distributed through ATLauncher, and it must not be confused with the separately named “Hermitcraft Server Pack” listing on Modrinth.

What Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 is, and what your server must match

Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 is a modpack for Minecraft 1.7.10. The version is not a minor detail: a client running a modern Minecraft release cannot join a 1.7.10 modded server, and a 1.7.10 client using a different mod list or configuration will normally be rejected. The pack has a dedicated listing in ATLauncher, which is the clearest distribution point for it.

Every person connecting should use the same pack release, Minecraft version, and mod configuration as the server. If one player has added, removed, or upgraded a mod, the result can be a missing-mod error, mismatched registry entries, a crash while loading, or a disconnect immediately after joining. Keep a copy of the exact client instance that works before changing anything.

The loader is not explicitly documented in the pack listing

The pack targets 1.7.10. Fabric did not exist for that Minecraft version, so Forge is the likely loader, but that is an inference rather than a confirmed statement in the pack listing. Do not download a current Forge installer and assume it is correct. Let ATLauncher identify the pack’s required loader, or use the loader and libraries included with the pack’s server distribution. If the server files specify a particular Forge build, use that exact build.

Do not select the similarly named Modrinth pack

Modrinth has a page titled “Hermitcraft Server Pack.” It is a different project from Hermitcraft Modsauce 2. Its title alone is not evidence that it contains the Modsauce 2 files, and the version range shown there was not verified. Confirm that the listing says “Hermitcraft Modsauce 2” and targets Minecraft 1.7.10 before installing anything.

Choose managed hosting or self-hosting

Your first decision is operational rather than technical: do you want a control panel that installs the pack, or do you want to maintain the server files and network yourself?

Option What you do Advantages Trade-offs Best fit
Managed one-click hosting Select Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 in the provider’s Minecraft installer, choose a memory plan, and start the instance. Fast setup, no home-router configuration, provider handles the machine and usually exposes backups, console, and logs. Recurring cost, provider-specific controls, and a plan may advertise more or less memory than your group needs. Most groups, public communities, or anyone who does not want to maintain Java and firewall settings.
Self-hosted computer Obtain the correct server files, install Java, start and configure the server, and expose it to players. No hosting subscription, complete control of files and settings, and straightforward LAN play. You maintain updates, backups, uptime, security, Java, and router/firewall rules. Technical users, temporary worlds, or a group playing on the same home network.

For a first public or friends-only world, managed hosting is the lower-effort route because both BisectHosting and ScalaCube advertise Modsauce 2 as an install option. BisectHosting describes its Minecraft selector as setting up the server with the pack pre-installed; ScalaCube describes a one-click installation through its control panel. The exact button names and available regions can change, so verify the pack name and Minecraft version in the panel before paying or uploading a world.

How much RAM to allocate

No official memory requirement has been published for this pack. The following figures are vendor guidance, not a benchmark and not a Mojang specification:

Source Published guidance How to interpret it
BisectHosting 2 GB recommended to run the pack smoothly A starting point for a small, lightly loaded instance according to that provider; not a guarantee for every world or player count.
Stickypiston 4 GB minimum plan; 5 GB or more for friends or public servers A more conservative baseline when several people connect or the world is public.
ScalaCube About 7 GB recommended minimum for comfortable play The most generous of the cited figures; it may reflect that provider’s plan sizing rather than a universal requirement.

A sensible first allocation for a small private group is 4 GB, provided the host machine has additional memory for the operating system and other services. Start lower only when you have a very small group and can monitor logs. Increase the allocation when the server reports out-of-memory errors, repeatedly pauses during world generation, or becomes unstable as more players explore. More RAM cannot fix every lag problem: a slow CPU, excessive entity activity, disk contention, or a misbehaving mod can still cause tick delays.

Leave memory for the operating system

Do not give the Java process all available physical memory. On a self-hosted machine, reserve memory for the operating system, file cache, remote-access tools, and any other services. For example, a machine with 8 GB total should not normally run a 7 GB Java heap. On a managed plan, check whether the advertised number is dedicated RAM and whether the control panel counts overhead separately.

Managed hosting: the least-effort installation

Panel labels differ between providers, but the workflow is consistent. The steps below describe what to verify rather than promising a particular provider’s exact interface.

  1. Confirm the listing. In the provider’s Minecraft game selector, search for “Hermitcraft Modsauce 2.” Confirm that the entry identifies Minecraft 1.7.10. Do not select a similarly named server pack or a newer Hermitcraft-themed pack.
  2. Choose a plan with headroom. Use the vendor figures as starting points: about 2 GB for the smallest claimed smooth-play case, 4 GB for a small group, and 5 GB or more when the provider specifically advises it for friends or public use. A plan around 7 GB follows ScalaCube’s more conservative recommendation. Treat these as vendor estimates, not guarantees.
  3. Install the pack from the panel. Use the one-click installer or Minecraft selector. If the panel offers both a client pack and a server pack, choose the server installation for Modsauce 2. Wait for the file operation to finish before starting the instance.
  4. Read the first console output. The initial launch may create configuration files and request acceptance of Minecraft’s EULA. Use the panel’s EULA control, if supplied, or edit the generated EULA file only after reading and accepting its terms.
  5. Start and test privately. Start the server, wait for the console to report that it is ready, and connect with a client that has the identical ATLauncher pack and version. Test movement, block interaction, and saving before inviting others.
  6. Set access and backups. Use the panel’s whitelist, operator, scheduled-backup, and console features where available. Give operator privileges only to trusted people. Download an occasional backup rather than relying solely on a provider’s automatic retention.
  7. Share the connection details. Managed hosts generally provide an address and port. Give players the exact address shown in the panel; do not substitute your home IP unless you are actually self-hosting.

Check the client installation in ATLauncher

  1. Install ATLauncher from its official distribution channel.
  2. Use its pack browser to locate Hermitcraft Modsauce 2.
  3. Install the pack without changing its Minecraft version or mod list.
  4. Launch once and reach the main menu before attempting to connect.
  5. In the multiplayer screen, enter the managed server address exactly as supplied.

The server and client may both show a long list of mods during startup. The important check is not whether the lists look similar, but whether they are the same release and loader configuration. If a host offers an importable instance or a downloadable client pack, prefer that exact artifact over assembling mods manually.

Self-hosting: a cautious 1.7.10 workflow

The pack listings do not document a complete, verified manual server procedure. The sequence below is the conventional approach for old modpacks, but you must confirm the filenames, loader build, and startup instructions against the Modsauce 2 pack files you obtain. Do not treat a generic 1.7.10 server jar as the complete modpack server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Obtain the matching server distribution

Start from the Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 entry in ATLauncher or a server archive explicitly identified for that pack. A client instance alone may not contain the server-side files, scripts, libraries, or configuration required for a dedicated server. Keep the downloaded archive unchanged and record its version. If no server distribution is available, a managed host may be the practical option; guessing at missing files can produce a server that clients cannot join.

2. Prepare a separate server directory

Create a directory used only for this world. Avoid placing it inside the client’s live instance folder, because server-generated files and client configuration can overwrite one another. Copy the server distribution into the directory, and make sure the account running it has permission to read and write the folder. Back up the untouched distribution before the first launch.

3. Install a compatible Java runtime

Minecraft 1.7.10 modpacks conventionally use Java 8. The pack’s own instructions should take precedence if they name a different Java build. On the server machine, verify the runtime with:

java -version

Use a 64-bit Java installation when allocating several gigabytes of memory. If the command reports a modern runtime and the server crashes during startup, test with Java 8 rather than repeatedly changing mod files. Keep the Java executable path handy if more than one runtime is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Run the supplied startup file first

Use the batch or shell script included with the server distribution when one is provided. Such a script may set the required loader, libraries, or JVM options. If the distribution instead documents a jar command, follow that filename exactly. A generic example is:

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui

Here, -Xms2G sets the initial heap and -Xmx4G sets the maximum heap; replace server.jar with the actual file named by the pack. This is an example of memory flags, not confirmation that Modsauce 2 uses that jar name or command. If the loader supplies its own launch script, do not bypass it with this example.

5. Accept the EULA only after reading it

The first start commonly creates eula.txt and stops. Read the agreement, and if you accept it, change the generated line to:

eula=true

Start the server again. If it stops for a missing library, wrong Java version, or an unrecognized argument, fix that error before changing the EULA file again. Never download random libraries from unverified sites to satisfy a missing-file message.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

6. Configure the world and memory

After a successful start, stop the server from its console so files close cleanly. Review the generated configuration and server.properties. Set the world name, maximum players, difficulty, and other options deliberately, then restart. Keep the heap below the machine’s physical capacity; a 4 GB heap requires additional system memory.

7. Test on the local network

First connect from the host computer using its local address or the connection method documented by the server. Then test from another device on the same network using the host’s private IPv4 address. This isolates mod and server problems from router and internet problems. If local clients cannot connect, check that the server reached its ready state, the client pack matches, and the operating-system firewall permits Java.

8. Expose the server to outside players only when ready

For internet players, forward the server’s TCP port in the router to the host computer’s private IP address. Minecraft commonly uses TCP port 25565, but confirm the value in server.properties and forward the configured port instead of assuming the default. Add an operating-system firewall rule for that port, give the host a stable local address, and share your public address only with people who should connect. Some internet providers use carrier-grade NAT, which prevents ordinary inbound forwarding; in that case, use a managed host or another documented access method.

9. Make the address usable

A public IP can change after a router reconnect. If your group needs a stable name, use a dynamic-DNS service you trust and keep its client updated. This is optional; it does not solve blocked inbound connections or an incorrect port-forwarding rule. Test from a network that is not your home Wi-Fi, such as a phone hotspot, because a local test can succeed even when internet access is misconfigured.

Connecting players without version mismatches

Give every player a short checklist before they join:

  • Install Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 through ATLauncher.
  • Use the same Minecraft 1.7.10 pack release as the server.
  • Do not add performance, minimap, or cosmetic mods unless the server owner confirms they are compatible and permitted.
  • Launch the pack successfully to the title screen before entering the server address.
  • Use the exact hostname or IP and port supplied by the owner.

If the server reports a missing mod, compare the client’s mod folder with the server distribution rather than copying arbitrary files from another pack. If it reports a registry or channel mismatch, reinstall the exact pack instance. A clean, separate ATLauncher instance is often faster than trying to repair a heavily modified one.

Performance and administration after launch

Watch the console before adding more memory

Keep an eye on startup warnings, repeated stack traces, and pauses during world saving or exploration. A server that remains online but has severe tick delays may be CPU-bound or waiting on disk, not short of heap. Increase memory only after confirming that the Java process is actually exhausting its allocation.

Control world growth

Exploration generates and saves new chunks. A small group moving in different directions can create more load than the same number of players working in one area. Agree on a reasonable exploration pattern, keep backups before major expeditions, and avoid repeatedly deleting and regenerating the world while troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect accounts and permissions

Use a whitelist for a private server, keep the server software and operating system restricted to necessary services, and avoid granting operator status casually. Do not publish a home IP address in a public forum. If a managed panel offers two-factor authentication, enable it for every administrator.

Back up before changes

Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory, or use a provider’s snapshot feature designed for live servers. Retain more than one backup and keep at least one copy away from the server machine. Test a restore on a separate directory so you know the backup is usable before an actual failure.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The pack is missing from the installer The host does not offer Modsauce 2, or the search term is wrong. Search the full name, confirm the 1.7.10 label, and ask the host whether a manual import is supported. Do not substitute the Modrinth “Hermitcraft Server Pack.”
Server stops during startup Wrong Java generation, incomplete server files, incorrect loader, or an invalid launch command. Read the first error in the console, verify Java with java -version, use the supplied startup script, and restore a clean server directory.
“Missing mods” or registry mismatch Client and server use different pack releases or mod lists. Reinstall the exact ATLauncher instance and compare versions. Remove manually added mods.
Players on the same Wi-Fi cannot join Server is not ready, local firewall blocks Java, or the private address is wrong. Test from the host, confirm the listening port, allow Java through the firewall, and use the host’s private IP.
Local play works but internet play fails Incorrect port forwarding, changing private IP, firewall rules, carrier-grade NAT, or wrong public address. Reserve the host’s local address, forward the configured TCP port, test from an outside network, and check whether the ISP permits inbound connections.
Lag increases with more players Insufficient CPU, memory pressure, disk load, or simultaneous chunk generation. Review logs and resource usage, reduce simultaneous exploration, verify backups are not saturating the disk, and increase RAM only when evidence supports it.

Which route should you use?

Choose managed hosting when you want the server online quickly, players are not all on one LAN, or you do not want to troubleshoot Java, firewall, and router settings. A one-click listing is especially valuable for an old pack because it reduces the chance of combining the wrong loader or libraries.

Choose self-hosting when the group is comfortable maintaining a machine, the world is primarily for LAN use, or avoiding a recurring hosting fee matters more than convenience. Before committing, confirm that you can obtain the actual Modsauce 2 server files. The pack’s 1.7.10 target and the absence of a verified manual procedure make file provenance more important than copying a generic tutorial for another modpack.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Final checklist

  • The server and every client use Hermitcraft Modsauce 2 for Minecraft 1.7.10.
  • The pack came from ATLauncher or a server archive explicitly identified for Modsauce 2.
  • You did not confuse it with Modrinth’s differently named “Hermitcraft Server Pack.”
  • Your starting memory allocation is appropriate for the group, with system headroom.
  • Java and the mod loader match the pack’s own instructions; Java 8 is the conventional starting point for 1.7.10.
  • The EULA was read and accepted before setting eula=true.
  • LAN play was tested before opening the server to the internet.
  • For remote players, the configured TCP port is forwarded to a stable private address and allowed through the firewall.
  • Whitelist, administrator permissions, backups, and restore procedures are in place.
